Hi all!
Did you have a good long weekend? I know it is a distant memory, but I could get used to bank holiday Mondays! I went to the Dundrum Shopping Centre on Monday and the amount of people there made you believe that Christmas was next week! Recession? Well, it certainly hasn’t arrived in Dundrum yet!
The current Doom & Gloom in the media about the end of the world (or worse!!) reminds me of someone I met a few years ago and who told me that he refuses to read a newspaper or watch the news. He said that he is happy, enjoys life, has no serious debts and enjoys a stable job and all the media wants to make him belief is that he should be worried stiff. While I don’t agree with him fully, I can see where he is coming from! For most of us not much has changed since the “global economic crisis” has hit “us” and (hopefully) most of us won’t be directly affected. The people that will be affected are not hit by the global crisis, but by redundancies etc which are a lot more immediate. So the dooms day panic is seriously counterproductive? “Fear” debilitates, lames and STOPS you from being creative, positive…and from enjoying life! I am not suggesting we should hide our heads in the sand, but maybe, just maybe we shouldn’t endorse the panic we taught constantly by TV, newspapers and radio
either!?
This Event Guide can’t solve any problems for you or for the world ;-) but hopefully it will help you to distract yourself from negativity at times and to enjoy some aspects of life by going to events, by enjoying talks, exhibitions, music. And since all this is available for free you can’t really go wrong! Oh, and do something nice for your friends and colleagues and give them a chance to enjoy the free events too! IRISH WRITERS’ CENTRE EVENTS – TICKET COMPETITION

a) The Hourglass Readings are fortnightly readings by leading contemporary authors at the Irish Writers’ Centre, 19 Parnell Square, Dublin 1. This unique and intimate series of hour-long public readings has been curated by leading novelist and poet Dermot Bolger. In conversation with Bolger, writers will read from and discuss their work. Starting in October, leading literary agent Jonathan Williams presents an exciting new monthly series of talks aimed specifically at aspiring writers. Each month he will provide indispensable advice and information to those who are looking to see their work into print. From choosing and dealing with agents, editors and publishing houses through to issues of presentation, publicity, and marketing one’s work, these unique presentations in the Irish Writers’ Centre will provide aspiring writers with expert insights into the world of letters and how to negotiate one’s way within it.

AMERICAN ELECTION
Last week I mentioned that Nancy asked if there are any get-togethers in Dublin to watch the TV coverage for the US Presidential Election together. I did investigate and got help from Maureen G., Dan B., Jim H. and Kate F. and this is the story: There will be an official invite-only event organised by the US Embassy. In addition the “Democrats Abroad” have a members-only event in Café en Seine (5 Euro). However this event is already oversubscribed from the members alone and therefore non-members unfortunately can’t get in. However, since Café en Seine (Dawson Street) is open for other business as well that evening, there is a good chance that they show the election coverage on their TV screens throughout the pub. In that case you could meet there as well and have a separate get-together. Unfortunately all pub based events are subject to pub closing times, so just when the election reports get really interesting, you will be kicked out of Café en Seine. Maybe it would make more sense
to meet at home? If there are a number of people interested I am happy to make contact. Send me a mail /dublineventguide@gmail.com) if you want to meet people that evening with the Subject “Election” and I will pass on your e-mail address to the others who want to meet up as well.
A completely different type of event is the “Leviathan: Political Cabaret – US Presidential Election Special” which involves David McWilliams and takes place in the Button Factory in Temple Bar (former Temple Bar Music Centre) on Tue 04 Nov 2008 from 20:00. “IN PRAISE OF SHADOW” GROUP SHOW – IMMA
‘In Praise of Shadows’ is a large exhibition presenting more than 90 in the form of shadows, shadow theatres and silhouettes. The pieces of art are inspired by the shadow theatre in Turkey, folk tales and simple contemporary narratives. Through the work of Haluk Akakçe, Nathalie Djurberg, William Kentridge, Katariina Lillqvist, Jockum Nordström, Christiana Soulou, Andrew Vickery and Kara Walker the exhibition explores the parallels between the traditions of shadow theatre and the new narrative spirit in contemporary art. Work by these contemporary artists will be shown alongside early silhouettes and stop motion films by Lotte Reiniger and Ladislas Starewitch, pioneers of animated films in the 1920s and 1930s. ‘In Praise of Shadows’ will open on Wed 05 November 2008 at the Irish Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition continues until 04 January 2009.
An accompanying discussion will take place at IMMA on Tuesday 4 November 2008 at 17:00. KENNETH LAMBERT – BACK LOFT
‘Hard Boiled’ by Kenneth Lambert is the installation of the aftermath of a crime scene and pays homage to the visual composition of film noir, psychological thrillers of the forties and the visual literacy of detective fiction writers such as Raymond Chandler and Ian Fleming. The show will open at the Back Loft on Friday 31 October 2008 from 18:00-20:00 and fancy dress is preferred, though not essential. The crime fiction author Arlene Hunt be officially opening the show. Then there will be lots of Halloween Fun on Friday 31 Oct from 11:00 until 17:00 with spooky story time, face painting and the chance to win some great prizes.

HALLOWEEN CELEBRATIONS
On 31 Oct is Halloween and in addition to illegal bonfires and illegal (private) fireworks, it is the time of the year when there are fancy dress parties, trick-or-treat “campaigns” (children ringing your door asking if they should play you a trick or if you prefer to give them a treat in form of sweets, nuts, fruit or – most preferred – even money). This year Dublin City Council will again strike fear and dread in the population when ghosts, ghouls and all manner of scary creatures take to the highways and byways of the capital in the annual Halloween Festival and Parade. The Parade will commence from Prices Lane off Fleet Street at 19:00 and pass through Temple Bar before crossing the Liffey at the Ormond Bridge to Smithfield for a wonderfully scary pageant of light, sound and spectacular costumes. The event will run from 19:00-20:30.
* Ballymun
This year’s “Otherworld Festival” moves to the new plaza in front of the Civic Centre on Main Street Ballymun and will feature a medieval village with plenty of homegrown talent performing in the festival marquees and tents. The festival is proud to announce the arrival of Circus Gerbola who will be in Ballymun for 5 day from the 01 Nov and will preview their show for us on Halloween night. The festival will also feature the amazing work of “Melimage” who will transform the Axis Centre into a castle with spooky monsters and incredible visual images. The festival will close with a spectacular fireworks display. The “Otherworld Festival Village” will open from 18:00-20:00 with fireworks display at 20:15.

Halloween parade will meet at 17:00 in the Finglas Youth Resource Centre, Mellowes Road Finglas, Dublin 11. The parade will commence at 18:00 taking in the following route Mellowes Road, Finglaswood Road, Cappagh Road, Patrickswell Place, Wellmount Road, and is due to arrive at Farnham Drive at approximately 18:50. The winner of a local battle of the bands competition will play from 18:50-19:15. A Junior Disco will be held in Erin’s Isle G.A.A Club in Farnham Drive starting at 17:00-18:45. The fireworks display will commence 19:15-19:45. The Finglas Concert Band will play from 19:45-20:10.

PINT & PICTURE AND CINE CAFÉ
Howard Linnane (086-3614787) is inviting everybody to his “Pint & Picture Show” and his Cine Café. Both events will take place on Mondays from 19:30 in alternating weeks. Check with Howard to find out which week it is.
Both events are free film screenings in “Toast” in Rathmines (near the clock tower), however the difference between the two events is this:
Pint & Picture consists of a full-length film (feature or documentary) preceded by some Irish short films. When possible there is an informal Q&A session with one of the filmmakers whose work is being screened on the day, immediately after their film is shown.
Cine Café consists of a first half which features a pre-selected set of short films – most of which have been shown at film festivals – and in the second ‘Potluck’ half of the event, short films submitted there and then by members of the audience from their own work may also be screened (DVD only ). No feature-length films will be shown as Cine Café is a ‘shorts-only’ event.

OBESITY – PUBLIC LECTURE
A public lecture on ‘Obesity: Treating the Epidemic, Preventing the Pandemic’ is taking place on Tues 04 Nov from 19:00 in the RDS Merrion Room.
As a growing concern to the population of Ireland, obesity has been linked to serious health problems such as diabetes, cancer and dementia in later life. The third lecture in the RDS Irish Times Ireland in 2030 lecture series will discuss this. Prof. Niall Moyna, School of Health and Performance Science DCU and Dr Donal O’Shea, Associate Professor of Medicine in UCD, and from the Department of Endocrinology, St Vincent’s University Hospital, will share a platform to discuss the medical and social significance obesity will have to the overall future health of Ireland. The lecture is being organized in association with the Institute of Biology of Ireland. Admission to this lecture is free but booking is essential. ENTREPRENEURS LIVE – UCD SEMINAR SERIES

FILM SCREENING – INSTITUTO CERVANTES
The Spanish Cultural Institute in Dublin invites regularly to interesting talks and film screenings. All talks and screenings are usually in Spanish but translation into English or subtitles (for films) will be provided.
On 05 Nov at 18:30 the film “Don Quijote de la Mancha (1)” will be screened.
Animated cinema version of the novel “El ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quijote de La Mancha”, by Miguel de Cervantes with a few extras thrown in for younger viewers. Published in two parts, in the years 1605 and 1615 respectively, this work is considered the epitome of Spanish Literature and has been translated into every learned language in the world. In celebration of the 4th Centenary of the publication of the work, the original series, of 30 chapters of 30 minutes each has been condensed into two parts of 186 minutes. NEW MUSIC SALON SERIES – CONTEMPORARY MUSIC CENTRE
It’s that time of year again when composers and performers come out in strength to bring you the very best in contemporary Irish music. The Contemporary Music Centre is celebrating the fifth anniversary of its New Music Salon Series with a fresh line-up for Autumn 2008. The series continues on 05 November 2008 with pianist Mary Dullea and concludes with Ensemble ICC on 26 November 2008. Once again the series is being held in the Goethe Institut, 37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2.

THE ARTS AT AIRFIELD HOUSE TRUST
The Airfield House Trust in Dundrum, Co. Dublin, is inviting to a series of talks accompanying the residency of Seoidín O’Sullivan at Airfield House from mid-November 2008 to mid-February 2009. O’Sullivan’s practice explores ecological sustainability and encompasses drawing, film and photography, with a particular focus on project based work, including the development of The South Circular Road Community Food Garden Project.
In conjunction with the O’Sullivan’s residency Airfield will host three complimentary talks which will draw on the practice and insights of artists who are responding to the natural world and environmental change through their practice. 2. Beth O’Halloran
On Wed 05 Nov 2008 at 19:30 artist Beth O’Halloran will discuss the context of her current practice. O’Halloran’s source material ranges from atmospheric weather conditions to quantum mechanics and the Japanese aesthetic paradigm, wabi-sabi, which extols the value of natural materials and variegated surfaces over the mass-produced and man-made. She will also discuss her participation in a recent group show in the USA called ‘Green Horizons’ which focused solely on the artist’s role in environmental protection and awareness.
3. Greening the City: Setting up a Community Garden
On Wed 12 Nov 2008 at 19:30 Darren Malone, ecological activist and initiator of a Belfast based community garden and Seoidín O’Sullivan will share their experiences of two community garden projects. They will refer to trends such as guerrilla gardening and seed bombing and will focus on the process of setting up a community garden and the importance of growing your own food.

Part II of Moving Worlds: Cinemas of Migration runs from 16 October – 20 November, 2008. The third film in this series is “It Happened Just Before” by Anja Salomonowitz. Utilising an unusual documentary approach, this Austrian film examines the real stories of women victimised by human trafficking, where ordinary places serve as backdrops for what can be considered modern slavery. First-person narratives are read by a customs officer, a neighbour, a bartender in a brothel, a diplomat, and a taxi driver-people not directly involved in the women’s tragic destinies but, as the film suggests, may have played roles in them. Fredericc Fichefet, Editor and Denise Charlton, Director of Immigrant Council of Ireland will participate in a discussion following the film.

This is just too early and I rather kept it quiet, but I guess it is my duty as a “reporter” to tell you about this as well: Santa Claus got confused and the people In Dundrum Shopping Centre weren’t helpful in clearing up the confusion. As a result, Santa Claus is coming a whole month to early to switch on the Christmas Lights in Dundrum.
On Thurs 06 Nov Santa Claus will arrive in Dundrum Town Centre to switch on the Christmas lights, and open this year’s brand new Christmas grotto! The festivities will begin at 18:00 on Town Square adjacent to the Mill Pond with the Dublin Gospel Choir and hot chocolate and mince pie treats to keep you warm while you wait! MC Lorcan Murray from RTE Radio1 and RTE Lyric FM will make sure Santa arrives safely (they should have told him that he is too early!!!!!). WORLD WAR ONE DAY – NATIONAL MUSEUM COLLINS BARRACKS
The National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts and History, Collins Barracks, is holding a day of talks and activities on Sat 08 Nov to mark the 90th anniversary of the end of World War One.
Around 200,000 Irishmen served in the British services in World War One. The workshops, handling sessions and activities at the Museum will explore these Irishman’s experiences in World War One and what it was like to serve in that war.
Talks will include stories of Irish soldiers who were in the British Army and P.O.W.s in Germany in the last year of the War, including a story of a great escape from Holzminden prison camp by Irishman Lieutenant Philip Norbert Smith, from Arranmore, Co.Cavan, and also about the experiences of the Irish soldiers during the war.
Many of the talks and activities will take place in the exhibition Soldiers and Chiefs: The Irish at War at Home and Abroad from 1550. There will be a demonstration and handling session of the large 18pdr field artillery gun. The more courageous can come along and meet a WWI British Army recruitment re-enactor and discover who and how people joined up to fight in the war.
For those wishing to explore their creative side, there will also be offering workshops to make your own World War One bi-planes (max 15 participants), and create your own ID tags.
To bring the war to life there will be a screening of the film: The Battle of the Ancre, a battle that was fought on the Somme from September to November 1916. This propaganda film made by the British War Office was shown in movie theatres in 1917 and intersperses actual film shot at the front and at training grounds in England.

FREE BUS TO AUSTIN McQUINN – BUTLER GALLERY KILKENNY
The Butler Gallery are providing a free art bus to view the exhibition “Lammermoor” by Austin McQuinn, which is showing at the Butler Gallery in Kilkenny Castle. This multi-media installation is specifically conceived for the gallery and is inspired by the Donizetti opera ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’. The bus will leave Dublin at 11:00 on Saturday 08 Nov and will depart from Kilkenny Castle at 17:00 to return to Dublin.

ABASHED BATHERS WANTED – OUT OF SITE EVENT
During the week I got a mail from Michelle in which she asked for help. She explained: “I am making a new performance called Synchronised Swimmers for this year’s Out of Site (www.outofsite.info/) event called Promenade, which will be held in Clontarf on 08 November. It involves getting as many people as possible to change in and out of their togs on the Clontarf seafront. You are invited to join in this group performance, dubbed ‘the Alternative Spencer Tunick’. Bring your towel and swimsuit and get your limbs tangled as we don our suits as only the Irish know how.

SCIENCE WEEK
The Science Week 2008 runs from 09 – 16 Nov and is packed full of really interesting lectures and talks. Please check the website www.scienceweek.ie as soon as possible! The events and lectures are free, but you need to request tickets and you should do that soon. Demand will be huge. Piaras Kelly, who is organising a free lecture series in the Science Gallery sent me a list of them, but there are many more events, so check the website soon!

CHARLEY BORMANN EVENT – DUNDRUM
To mark the opening of the new Hughes&Hughes Dundrum store, an exclusive event with intrepid traveller Charley Boorman is planned for Mon 10 Nov from 19:00. He will be talking to travel broadcaster Fionn Davenport about his adventures, new book and TV series ‘By Any Means’. ______This is odd!!______________
There are many odd things around us and I guess I only have to mention “Irish politics” to create a Pavlov reflex. ;-) But a lot of the odd things are not worth reporting about in THIS newsletter, so I will turn this category into an irregular feature and will replace it from next week with a “Great Deals” category. “Great Deals” will be good priced or otherwise advantageous solutions for things like international phone calls, bonus schemes etc. I am not sure yet if that will become a permanent feature, but let’s see!

Hurray, I am finished somewhat earlier than usual, that means I will get some sleep tonight (often there is no sleep for me on Thursday nights/mornings because I have a day-job that seamlessly takes over once I have the Event Guide finished). A nice change! :-)
