———————————————————————

Hi all!

As Cliodhna D. put it last weekend: You/We all must have done a LOT of “backward raindancing” (as suggested last week to stop the rain) to get such a gorgeous Sunday. I hope many of you went to Dun Laoghaire because it was a super Sunday! The Saturday was a bit wetter, but hey, if you let the rain stop you in Dublin, then you are doomed! ;-) Thousands of people thought the same and Saturday was therefore quite busy as well at the festival. I entirely enjoyed the two days at my most favourite festival of the year (closely followed by the Street Performance World Championship and the Dublin City Soul Festival! ;-) )

Last year, when I wrote this Event Guide for the first year, I thought that probably with the end of August the free events will disappear for the autumn and winter and won’t be back until St. Patrick’s Day. But, with a bit more research, I was still able to report about a surprisingly large number of events, so don’t despair! Keep reading the weekly newsletter and I will make sure that you will find out about (nearly) everything that will be on.

Coming up are the September Fest, the Fringe Festival, the Opera Festival, the Theatre Festival, the Festival of World Food, Culture Night, Open House Dublin and then we are already quite close to the Christmas Markets. Not all are free (e.g. Theatre Festival, Fringe Festival and Opera Festival), but in previous years there have been free events as part of these festivals and I expect (and hope) the same will happen this year.

This weekend MANY of you will be in Stradbally at the Electric Picnic, so many might not even look at this Event Guide this week. But if you get a chance and even if you are away over the weekend, have a quick browse through the sections that are not for Fri/Sat/Sun, I am sure you will find some interesting stuff to read. :-)

And now to some “internal” things: My mail backlog is growing! If you have sent me a mail recently and I haven’t replied yet, please be patient. I am trying to reply to as many mails as possible, but my hours are limited and it takes a while to get through the many mails I get. Still, keep sending your comments and opinions, EVERYTHING will be read and all suggestions will be considered.

Hey, did you see the subscriber number at the top of this mail? And did you know that a Ryanair flight has typically 185 passengers? We can now fill more than 10 planes with the members of the Dublin Event Guide Community! Cool! :-P

At the Festival of World Cultures in Jef B. surprised me with a donation for the running of this Event Guide! Thanks Jef! I like surprises. :-)

Please note: This Event Guide is sponsored by Esme E., Cliodhna D., Brian L., Padraig S., Kathie S., Orla niF and Jef B. Thanks for the support! If you too want to provide some financial help and want to see your name in this list, you can donate here: tinyurl.com/68dmlq or contact me to arrange another route for your donation (Remember this Event Guide is a hobby project and NOT a commercial enterprise…and there is NO minimum amount for donations! ;-) )

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges or at least appear to be free. I try to find confirmation in all cases, however, there are occasionally events that did appear to be free while writing this newsletter but later it turns out that some admission is charged. Apologies in that case! All information about events is checked as much as possible, however since I mostly relay information from other people or from websites etc, errors can happen and no guarantee for correctness can be given. (What a nuisance to have to add disclaimers like that!)

______Competition______________

ENSEMBLE ICC – TICKET COMPETITION
Ensemble ICC is a new music band that consists of hugely talented and very accomplished young musicians who are focused on performing new works (they have premiered over 35 new works in just a few months) from composers of the Irish Composers’ Collective. The Irish Composers’ Collective (formerly the Young Composers’ Collective) was founded in 2003 and is committed to producing high-quality performances of music by its composer-members. An entirely democratic group, the ICC has over 35 members from backgrounds as diverse as jazz, electronica and traditional music. The ICC is a true community, providing support structures for composers and is, in particular, devoted to the professional development of those composers at the earlier stages in their careers. www.irishcomposerscollective.org
The Ensemble ICC is the performing wing of the Irish Composer’s Collective and with such a wide range of musical styles among the composers, you can imagine that the Ensemble ICC has to be incredibly flexible and adaptable. So from the sophisticated elegance of a classical chamber orchestra to the energetic and driven style of a rock band, the Ensemble is well able to impress across musical boundaries. The Ensemble consists of Cora Venus Lunny (Viola), Kate Ellis(Cello & Musical Director), Daniel Bodwell (Bass), Karl Rooney (Saxophone), Roger Moffat (Percussion).
On Thur 04 Sept the Ensemble ICC is performing from 20:00 in the Unitarian Church, 112 St. Stephen’s Green West, Dublin 2 (www.unitarianchurchdublin.org). The Esnemble will perform compositions from Amanda Feery, Scott McLaughlin, Benedict Schlepper-Connolly, Francis Heery, Laura Kilty, Simon O’Connor, Dónal Adams & Brian Bolger on the evening. Tickets are EUR 12/8 and can be bought on www.tickets.ie.
As a member of the Dublin Event Guide community you are privileged and have the opportunity to win a pair of tickets. Benedict Schlepper-Connolly was so nice and made two pairs of tickets available for a competition. Thanks, Benedict!
If you want to win and attend this impressive sounding event, you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject “Ensemble”. The body of your mail has to contain your mobile phone number and your name. Your mail has to be with me by 13:00 on Tuesday 02 Sept already so, don’t delay!! Out of all entries two winners will be drawn randomly and will be notified by phone.

UNSTOPPABLE BRILLIANCE – BOOK COMPETITION
Liberties Press offered two copies of the book “Unstoppable Brilliance – Irish Geniuses and Asperger’s Syndrome” by Antoinette Walker and Prof. Michael Fitzgerald for a competition. The book suggests that many of the most notable people in Irish politics, the arts and sciences may have exhibited traits of Asperger’s syndrome (a variant of autism) – and that much of their drive and success may in some way be connected to this condition. The competition is now closed and the winners of the books are Sara Gonzalez and Paul Allen. Congratulations!
If you want to find out more about it, you can look it up (and buy it) here:
www.libertiespress.com/index.php?option=com_cartage&main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=25 or in your local book store.
More information about all Liberties Press Books on www.libertiespress.com.

All events in this Competition section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I get often lots of entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, but you should consider going anyway! :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________

Not really “Dublin News”, but it does fit in this newsletter and better than under the headline of a day of the week, it fits here:

IMPROVE THE TV PROGRAMME + WIN SOME MONEY
Have you ever wondered how you could tell a TV station if you liked a programme or if not without sending letters about everything you saw? In order to provide feed back you need to be on a viewer/media panel and such a viewer panel is a group of people who regularly (ideally on a near daily basis) tell a research organisation what they watched or listened to and what they thought of it. The research organisation makes this information available to TV or Radio stations and they can then use that as intelligence about viewer/listener preferences etc. With the Internet such feedback is relatively easily possible and for a number of months I am part of such a media panel. If you want to voice your opinions AND have a chance to win some money? Keep reading! :-)
In September 2007 I came across the Irish Media Survey, a media panel which is not only interested in TV viewers’, but as well in radio listeners’ opinion. The “Irish Media Survey” is run by the market research company GfK and the survey helps media organisations to understand how much people like the programmes that are shown on TV and played on Radio. As a member of this media panel, your opinion is heard AND you have the chance to win some prizes. Every day you can (but are not obliged to!) voice your opinion and I have it set so that I get a daily reminder mail. (It takes about 3 – 5 minutes per day to complete the survey.) Every month GfK does a draw for one prize of EUR 1000 and 400 prizes of EUR 5. Every time you fill in the information on their website you will get one point and when you have gathered a minimum of 10 points you will automatically take part in the draw. For every point after that you will get an additional entry into the prize draw. So the more often you do take part in the survey, the higher your chances are to win a price. I have won three times 5 Euro in the last few months. :-) It is not a huge amount, but the chances are significantly higher than for the lotto AND I feel that it gives me a chance to let TV and Radio Stations know my positive or negative opinion about programmes. :-P If you are interested in joining this media panel, you can do so by following this link:
www.surveyireland.net/sign.php?Sr=30&Subsid=30 and by registering online. Oh, and when you win the EUR 1000, I hope you will buy me a pint! ;-)

WESTLINK TOLL BRIDGE
Last week I mentioned the new barrier-free tolling system for the Westlink M50 Toll Bridge. I mentioned some of the payment options, but Colm S. found more very interesting information for infrequent but regular users of the toll bridge and I would like to share this and his summary with you:
Colm explained to me that for infrequent M50 users (less than 5 trips a month) the cheapest option is to register for a “pay as you toll plus” tag at www.tolltag.ie (bookings.parkmagic.net/tolltag/#3). This is a free tag with a 10% admin fee and a cost of EUR 2 per bridge crossing. For people using the M50 once a week – the admin fee would work out at just EUR 0.80 a month. But if you are going to use the M50 more than 5 times a month – the 10% admin fee will come to more than the other provider’s EUR 1 fee. The initial top up on www.tolltag.ie is, however, EUR 40.
The eflow.ie video recognition account is next best for low volume users. This account has no admin fee but the toll fee is EUR 2.50 per journey. The slight advantage of this is you can pay after you use it – you don’t have to pre load a balance into the account. You can pay monthly by Credit Card, Laser or Direct Debit. Register at eflow.ie: 1890 50 10 50
If you are going to use the M50 more than five times a month – the cheapest option is to register for a free tag with a EUR 1 a month fee and a cost of EUR 2 per bridge crossing. Eflow.ie, Eazypass.ie, Directroute.ie and Etrip.ie all offer free tags and a EUR 1/month admin fee.
If you don’t register for a tag or a video recognition account – you will be charged EUR 3 per trip. Beware – you will have to pay by 20:00 the next day or you will incur hefty penalties of up to EUR 143. Payments can be made via credit card or laser over the phone or online. Also payments are accepted at Payzone outlets in many shops.
See the following link tagcompare.ie/t_and_c_account_charges.html for a full brake down on tags.
I still think it is outrageous that we taxpayers have to pay twice for this bridge, but that is a different story!

______Exhibitions_______________

There are surprisingly few exhibition launches this week and I am not sure if this is just a coincidence or if I was not smart enough finding them while writing this Event Guide? If I missed something, I will tell you next week and you will probably still have a chance to visit the exhibitions that slipped through my fingers today.

FIONA MURRAY – MERMAID ARTS CENTRE
“Night Ward” is the exhibition of paintings by Fionna Murray. Using photographs, film stills and memories as source material, her drawings and paintings are an accumulation of small truths that negotiate borders between separated realities. The exhibition runs from 29 Aug-27 Sept. The Mermaid Arts Centre is in Main Street, Bray, Co. Wicklow (www.mermaidartscentre.ie) and the Mermaid Gallery is open Monday – Saturday 10:00 – 18:00. Admission is free.

RUBY & PIN AND DAVID MCGLYNN – DAME STREET GALLERY
“Photo-art meets Bronze Sculptures” is the underlying theme for this joint exhibition.
Ruby & Pin and David McGlynn will jointly exhibit a collection of their work from the 25-31 August in the Dame Street Gallery. Ruby & Pin, a photographic & pop-art combo, will display colourful and moody images to create something altogether new, exciting and different for your wall. Complementing this, Dublin-born sculptor David McGlynn presents a new work captured beautifully in bronze. The inspiration for these pieces is varied yet connected by the coastal environment where he lives.
(Gallery Details: Dame Street Gallery, 36 Dame Street, Dublin 2, www.damestreetgallery.com, Open: 11:00-20:00??)

HERITAGE WEEK
Heritage Week will run in Ireland from 24-31 Aug 2008. It’s a week long celebration of who we are and where we’ve come from. Heritage Week is part of European Heritage Days, a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union. In Ireland Heritage Week is co-ordinated by the Heritage Council with support from the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government.
There is something taking place in every county and most activities are free of charge or offer great value for money. Everyone is encouraged to get involved and activities range from fairs, night-time bat walks, wildlife tours and lectures to music recitals, historical re-enactments, and outdoor activities. Many heritage sites and stately homes will offer free admission or special concessions. You can contact the Heritage Council on 1850 200 878 or via mail to events@heritagecouncil.com. Further information can be found as well on www.heritageweek.ie.
In the Dublin Area alone there are more than 200 (!!!!!!) events during that week and unfortunately it is not easy to gather them so that I can list them here in this Event Guide.
Last week I had planned to “build” my agenda for the weekend and to pack it full of Heritage Week events and I had intended to share this list of MY plans with you. However, the week was too busy on the day-job front and I didn’t get a chance yet to work out my weekend schedule. For this reason I unfortunately will have to leave you do your own research. Have a look at the website and choose at least ONE of the many events! :-)

Have a look at the website and see if there is anything that interests you. I am sure you find something!!!

The Children’s Relief Fund (www.crfinternational.org) is organising a charity car boot sale. On Sun 31 Aug in St- Joseph’s on Tivoli Road in Dun Laoghaire you can sell what ever you want to get rid off and all profit will go to the street children of Manila. Alternatively you can buy plentifully and help that way.
If you have things to sell, just contact Genny (gennycarraro@crfinternational.org or genny.carraro@gmail.com or 086-3383828) and the items possibly can be collected from you. Now, a car boot sales is not much use if there are no people interested in buying the goods. So if you have nothing to sell, come along and have a look if you need something. The event starts at 07:00 (!!) and runs until the early afternoon.
Thanks to Niamh N, for telling me about this event!

FAMILY EVENTS – NATIONAL MUSEUM
The national Museum has a brand new website and it is much improved in comparison to the old website. BUT many areas don’t work (yet) properly, so it is a bit of a pain to navigate it. For the moment I will therefore only provide LINKS to the Family events provided by the museum:
www.museum.ie/en/list/calendar-of-events.aspx?eventID=81 www.museum.ie/en/list/calendar-of-events.aspx?eventID=117

www.museum.ie/en/list/calendar-of-events.aspx?eventID=116

www.museum.ie/en/list/calendar-of-events.aspx?eventID=118

REGULAR SUNDAY EVENTS
There are a number of regular live events every week and over the coming weeks I will try to gather more of them and include them as a regular feature:
*The Mary Stokes Band (Blues) from 18:30 in Bruxelles near Grafton Street and near the Westbury Hotel. I listened to them last Sunday and they are brilliant!
*Sunday Jazz in The Globe in George’s Street every Sunday from 17:30-19:30.
*Jazz in The George in George’s Street from 16:30-18:00: Jazz Band Zrazy.
*Sunday Roast is the event in Thomas Reads The Oak in Dame Street/Parliament Street every Sunday from 19:00. Provided are free live music, games & roast potatoes.

WEEKEND EVENTS
If you are just looking for Sunday events, please check the event list for Saturday as well. A good few events are taking place on Saturday AND Sunday, but it wouldn’t make sense to list them twice.

PINT AND PICTURE FILM CLUB
Howard Linnane (086 3614787) is running a film club, in co-operation with the pub “Russells of Ranelagh”. The film club screens Irish short films at the beginning of the evening and usually a feature film after the short films. The event takes place upstairs in “Russells” in Ranelagh and is free.
The next screening will be on Mon 01 Sept. Howard hasn’t fully decided on a starting time yet and I know that this makes it difficult to arrive on time. ;-) But I suggest that you go there for a 19:15 or 19:30 start and I am sure you won’t miss too much. The main film on the 01 Sept are actually TWO films, or rather two documentaries:
The first one is ‘Yellow Gate Women’ (dir Margaretta D’Arcy (2006)), an hour-long documentary on the Greenham Common Women and their protest against the siting of Cruise missiles at USAF Greenham Common in England from the early 1980s on to very recent times. The second documentary is ‘Happiness’ (dir Conor Horgan (2005)), a 27-minutes-long documentary short, in which the director travelled around Ireland asking a wide variety of people for their definitions of the word “Happiness” which they all give to camera.
(Russells of Ranelagh is on the main street, just down from the Luas station and across from the Triangle, it is the pub with the nice balcony at the front).

FILM SCREENING – INSTITUTO CERVANTES
The Spanish Cultural Institute “Instituto Cervantes” is showing a series of films exploring the notions of documentary, video-art and avant-garde cinema. The films do look interesting, but the translation from Spanish is not very helpful! So, you have to take a bit of a gamble if you don’t understand the Spanish description here

dublin.cervantes.es/es/cultura_espanol/proximas_actividades_cultura.shtm

The English translation is a little too literal in some aspects and I find it hard to understand: dublin.cervantes.es/en/culture_spanish/upcoming_activities_culture_spanish.shtm. The films will be shown on 02, 10, 11, 17, 18 + 24 Sept at 18:30 in the Instituto Cervantes in Lincoln House, Lincoln Place, Dublin 2 (just opposite the Dental Clinic at the back of TCD). HURLING CUBED
Do you play Hurling or are fascinated about it? Then this is event is for you. If you have never heard about Hurling, then you should check this out first: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurling. Guinness is the Hurling sponsor in Ireland and they have invented the “Hurling Cubed” tournament, which is totally different than a normal hurling game but promises to be interesting: In a plexiglas “cage”, 3 players per team play for a total of 3 minutes. They use a shorter than normal hurley (hurling stick/club) and a soft sliotar (hurling ball) and have to achieve three goals to win. Hurling is an amazingly fast game with impressive playing and ball control skills and I am sure that it will be interesting to watch the tournament, which will take place in Dublin Castle from Thurs until Sat.
Originally it was planned that the Dublin tournament will take place from Wednesday until Friday, but for some reasons all events on Wednesday have been cancelled, so that only Thursday + Friday are left for the Dublin tournament.
The schedule for Thursday (04 Sept) is:
17:00-19:00 Come and try (all four courts are open to try it out)
19:00-19:30 Administration and registration of teams
19:30-21:30 Hurling Cubed Round 1 (League Format)
22:00-23:00 Hurling Cubed Round 2 (Knockout Format)
On Friday (05 Sept) this will take place:
17:00-18:00 Come and try
18:00-18:30 Administration and registration of teams
18:30-20:30 Hurling Cubed Round 1 (League Format)
20:30-21:00 Celebrity / Expert exhibition match
21:00-22:00 Hurling Cubed Round 2 (Knockout Format)
22:00-23:00 Dublin Final
Galway, Cork, Limerick, Kilkenny, Waterford had already their tournaments and therefore the Irish Hurling Cubed final will take place on Saturday (06 Sept) in Dublin Castle as well. The schedule is:
16:00-17:00 Come and try
17:00-17:30 Administration and registration of teams
17:30-18:30 Hurling Cubed Round 1 (League Format)
18:30-20:00 Celebrity / Expert exhibition match
20:00-21:00 Hurling Cubed Round 2 (Knockout Format)
21:00-22:00 Grand Final
Please note that unfortunately even as a spectator you must at least be 18 years of age. Pity! It would have been a great way of promoting Hurling to young people.

LATIN AMERICA – PUBLIC LECTURE
“A new wave of reform in Latin America…From Allende to Morales and Lugo.” is the title of a talk by Hugh O’Shaugnessy, who is a reporter with four decades of experience covering Latin American issues. He has corresponded regularly to The Observer and the Financial Times. The event will take place on Thurs 04 Sept in Wynn’s Hotel, 35/39 Lwr. Abbey Street, Dublin 1 and it will start at 19:00. And some more detail: “After the bloody US-sponsored crush of democratic alternatives of social reform in Latin America during the ’70s and the following decades of dictatorship and military rule, a new wave of reform has swept the continent in the wake of the 21st Century challenging Neoliberal orthodoxy and the so-called “End of History”. How much room for social reform have the Latin American “progressive” regimes? What are the continuities of social reform for the last half a century? What is the novelty if there is any- on the new wave of reform?” www.lasc.ie/activities/publicDebates.html

I hope that the weekend weather won’t turn the Electric Picnic visitors into Bog Snorkeler (www.youtube.com/watch?v=k19QGds3-KA) but that hopefully we all will have nice weather. I will indulge this weekend in the Heritage Week and will go to the Peoples Photography Exhibition. So, it won’t be a boring weekend, but, hey, it has been a LOOONG time since the last time that I was bored. :-)

Enjoy the weekend!

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent to anybody who is interested for free and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby. However, I won’t say No to donations ;-) just follow this link to PayPal: tinyurl.com/68dmlq. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you find in pubs and other venues.

Event Guide 62: Festival of World Culture, Heritage Week, Northside Music Festival, Print Museum Family Day

August 22nd, 2008

| 22 Aug 2008 ……………Subscribers: 1765
———————————————————————

Hi all!

What have we done wrong???? Why are the weather gods soooo angry with us? Do we not deserve at least a couple of rays of sun. I like living in Ireland, but summers like that make me wonder how much longer I can stand it. It nearly makes you hope for Global Warming IF that results in a dryer climate! :-O Last week I asked for suggestions to improve the weather and I received an interesting suggestion. I mentioned rain dances and somebody suggested doing a rain dance backwards! Do we have any experienced rain dancers among us? We should definitely try it to stop the Monsoon!;-) Some older Irish people still talk about the summer of 1995 as the one summer when the weather was really good. That is 13 (!!!) years ago! It is about time that there will be another one to talk about!

This weekend, the most important Festival of the year (in my calendar!) will take place and I soooo hope for at least some dry hours (How modest the wishes get!).

The Festival of World Culture in 2002 was where the idea to this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) was originally born (the trigger to turn the idea into reality was the Street Performance World Championship 2006 and the Dublin City Soul Festival 2007) and this year sees the 8th Festival of World Culture. From initially a few hundred people, the festival now attracts more than 200,000 people (according to the organisers) and it is definitely my favourite event every year. Unless you have really important plans already OR planned your holidays badly and are away ;-), you should definitely try to come to Dun Laoghaire either on Saturday or on Sunday OR – even better – on both days. I will be there both days and if you want to meet up contact me on 087-2931571. I will be most of the time at or near Newtownsmith Green, where the main stage is.

Thanks to everyone who contacts me expressing their thanks and appreciation for getting the Event Guide. I am glad that you enjoy the Event Guide! If you too want to send me a mail with positive comments or with suggestions for improvements, feel free to send it to dublineventguide@gmail.com. I can’t always reply to all mails, but always TRY to!

By the way, the work on renaming the Event Guide (due to the objections to the name of another publication ;-) ) is still ongoing. In addition I am working on getting more sponsorship for this Event Guide and on the possibility of including a small amount of advertisement in order to finance the outlays I have, but as well – let me be totally honest – to generate some money that allows me to invest more of my time (or to justify the investment of even more time) to expand and improve this Event Guide further. I have a number of ideas and will share them with you over time.

If you have an opinion (pro or con) about the inclusion of a limited amount of advertisement OR if you are interested in sponsoring or in advertising here, please let me know (dublineventguide@gmail.com).

The Facebook Group for this Dublin Event Guide has grown to more than 1900 members (www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=7276986445) and you can see from that figure and the current newsletter subscriber number, that a lot of people who join the facebook group, do not subscribe to the newsletter. This week I will send a mail to all facebook group members to remind them that they have to subscribe to get all benefits of this Event Guide. If you are already a subscriber to the newsletter and are a member of the facebook group as well, you will get this reminder mail as well. It obviously is not relevant to you, but unfortunately I can’t select to send the mail only to the non-subscribers. So forgive me for sending that reminder mail to you as well.

Please note: This Event Guide is sponsored by Esme E., Cliodhna D., Brian L., Padraig S., Kathie S. and Orla niF.

UNSTOPPABLE BRILLIANCE – BOOK COMPETITION
Going by the number of entries I get, it seems that you all really like book competitions and we are lucky to have such a great supporter in Liberties Press who regularly make books available. I did get a chance this week to read some parts of “Unstoppable Brilliance” and it is a really interesting book. If you haven’t entered the competition yet, you have another few days! Alternatively you can buy the book straight away here for EUR 25 or you can get it in your local bookshop. www.libertiespress.com/index.php?option=com_cartage&main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=25
Here is what I wrote last week about the book and the competition: Liberties Press, the independent Irish publisher, who has an impressive catalogue of good books, has launched a new book. The book is called “Unstoppable Brilliance – Irish Geniuses and Asperger’s Syndrome” by Antoinette Walker and Prof. Michael Fitzgerald and is hugely interesting and controversial at the same time.
The book is described as “This fascinating and controversial book suggests that many of the most notable people in Irish politics, the arts and sciences may have exhibited traits of Asperger’s syndrome (a variant of autism) – and asserts that much of their drive and success may in some way be connected to this condition. The book is aimed at the general reader and features an introduction by MEP and rights activist Kathy Sinnott. Figures covered in the book include Robert Emmet, Pádraig Pearse, Éamon de Valera, Robert Boyle: scientist, William Rowan Hamilton: mathematician, Daisy Bates: ethnographer, WB Yeats, James Joyce and Samuel Beckett.
Very often people who are affected by Asperger’s exhibit high-level abilities in certain areas, other physical or behavioural traits may also be apparent. In Unstoppable Brilliance, the authors seek to demonstrate the particular facts, foibles and attributes of many well-known Irish historical figures, and show that in many ways their drive, focus and considerable achievements were almost inevitable given their high-level aptitude in particular fields – an aptitude not entirely of their own making or volition.” Michael Fitzgerald is a Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Trinity College, Dublin and is the leading expert on Asperger’s and autism in Ireland today. Antoinette Walker is a freelance editor and writer.
The nice and generous people from Liberties Press have made two books available for a competition and if you want to win a book, you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the word “Brilliance” in the subject line and your name, address and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. The mail has to be with me by 13:00 on 27 August 2008.
More information about the book on www.libertiespress.com.

Thanks!

DUBLIN MOVIE CLUB
Barry Hand has founded the Dublin Movie Club and describes it here:
“For those who love to go to the cinema, but don’t always have a buddy to go along with. The aim of the group is to meet up during the week and go see a movie together in one of Dublin’s central cinemas (Cineworld, Savoy & Screen – for now) The group meet a few minutes before screening and then after the film have a bit of a chinwag over a drink/coffee.” Joining the club is free (but when you go to the cinema you obviously have to pay for the ticket). To find out more go to www.dublinmovieclub.com/

WESTLINK TOLL BRIDGE
For some of you the 30 Aug will bring a simplification of your daily trip to work, but it is not all rosy. From that day the Westlink M50 Toll Bridge will use a barrier-free tolling system and the aim is to eliminate the daily traffic jams at the toll bridge (it is doubtful that that will be achieved until the M50 upgrade is completed in 2010, though). The toll should – in my opinion – be removed totally since our taxes already paid for the bridge and for the purchase of the tolling rights from the private company NTR. However, the government has not only decided to keep the toll system in place, but as well decided to increase the charges again.
In order to pay your toll you need to buy and attach a tag to the inside of your windscreen if you use the bridge regularly. If you are an infrequent user, you have two options: You can either register using “video registration” or you can “pay as you go”. For the eflow tag you pay an administration fee of EUR 1 per month and you pay EUR 2 every time you cross the bridge. If you use video registration you pay EUR 2.50 for crossing the bridge and no administration charge. If you use the “pay as you go” method you need to pay before 20:00 on the day after you crossed the bridge otherwise penalties will be added to your bill. You can pay online www.eflow.ie or through their call centre. The “pay as you go” price is EUR 3 per bridge crossing. A LOT of money if you are forced to use the bridge.
Only one group of drivers seems to potentially benefit substantially and probably will get a “free ride”. If your car is registered abroad and therefore doesn’t have an Irish number plate, it seems that you can’t be forced to pay because there are no agreements with foreign authorities to get the money from you. The eflow website says differently in the FAQ section, but there are grounds to speculate that the information given there is currently not fully based on facts. Officially you are NOT exempt from having to pay and it is an offence not to pay. But in reality it seems that the toll payment can not be enforced outside Ireland. (I read that in some newspaper and it is your responsibility to make sure that this information is correct! I won’t take any responsibility and am not suggesting that you should break the law. I am only relaying information from a newspaper article.)

SOLOMON GALLERY
The Solomon Gallery which for 27 years (!!) was on the top floor of the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre will cease operation on 01 October. The newly formed “Solomon Fine Art” will continue providing services to customers, but there won’t be a Gallery anymore.

FESTIVAL OF WORLD CULTURES – DUN LAOGHAIRE
I really find it difficult to write about this festival, because I just don’t know where to start and where to stop. It is the most varied festival in Ireland, I think. Music, Dance, Markets, Art and 250,000 people! How can I capture that in a few paragraphs? Well, I guess the ONLY way you can find out what the Festival of World Culture is, is by going there. Words don’t do it justice. When you go, make sure that you visit the Fairs and Markets (International & Gourmet Food Traders, Oxfam Global Village, Cool Earth Environmental Market). Then visit the People’s Park (Solo Flamenco will perform there on Sat 13:45-14:25) and after that go to the main stage at Newtownsmith Green (picking up some food on the way). In the evening go to one of the pubs in buzzing Dun Laoghaire where you will hear more brilliant bands! There are a number of non-free events, but you will be able to have a brilliant day, hearing loads of good music, without having to pay for anything. The main stage programme is here:
Sat 23 August
13:30 Samba de Rua & O’Neill Pipe Band
14:15 Bridgy
15:15 Liam O’Maonlai
16:15 Senses
17:45 Tiken Jah Fakoly (until 19:15)

Sun 24 August
13:30 Samba de Rua & O’Neill Pipe Band
14:15 Motema
15:15 Norh Strand Klezmer Band
16:15 DakhaBrakha
17:45 Sergent Garcia
And a few more things you must not miss: Dun Laoghaire South Asian Mela in the Pavillion Theatre (Sat 10:30-16:00), Carnival of Colour Parade (Sun 16:45 along Coast Road) and DEFINITELY have a look at the 3D Pavement Art on the East Pier and at the Sand Sculptures on Newtown Smith Green.
Do you wonder if I gave you a good overview? No, I didn’t really, I just skimmed the surface. But what I explained is what I will do and if you want to join me, just ring me (087-2931571). I will be in Dun Laoghaire from around 12:00 until late on both days. Programmes will be available in Dun Laoghaire, but if you want to have a more detailed look at the line-up and the many aspects of the festival go to www.festivalofworldculture.com
By the way: Dublin Bus has an extended service for the festival, there will be additional DARTs including late services and Pay and Display Parking will not be enforced over the weekend in Dun Laoghaire (but expect that all parking spaces are gone by mid afternoon). In the Blackrock area this exemption does not apply!
I think I will leave it at that! Just make sure that you go to Dun Laoghaire, ESPECIALLY if this is the first time you have the chance! :-)

The site www.skatetraindublin.blogspot.com is unfortunately no reliable source of information anymore and unfortunately Frances went missing. :-)

REGULAR SUNDAY EVENTS
There are a number of regular live events every week and over the coming weeks I will try to gather more of them and include them as a regular feature:

_______________________________

At this time of the year, the outdoor events start disappearing from the calendar bit by bit. The Fringe Festival and Culture Night in September will be some of the final outdoor events for the year. So if you get a chance, then use the opportunity to go to the Festival of World Culture or to the Northside Music Festival this weekend or to one of the brilliant events in the context of the Heritage Week.
Remember: Try to do every week at least ONE thing that is out of your normal behaviour patterns (doesn’t have to be in the context of events!). That way you expand your horizon, you might experience something really great that you otherwise would have never given a chance and you stay young – at least in your mind.
