Hi all!
As Cliodhna D. put it last weekend: You/We all must have done a LOT of “backward raindancing” (as suggested last week to stop the rain) to get such a gorgeous Sunday. I hope many of you went to Dun Laoghaire because it was a super Sunday! The Saturday was a bit wetter, but hey, if you let the rain stop you in Dublin, then you are doomed! ;-) Thousands of people thought the same and Saturday was therefore quite busy as well at the festival. I entirely enjoyed the two days at my most favourite festival of the year (closely followed by the Street Performance World Championship and the Dublin City Soul Festival! ;-) )
Last year, when I wrote this Event Guide for the first year, I thought that probably with the end of August the free events will disappear for the autumn and winter and won’t be back until St. Patrick’s Day. But, with a bit more research, I was still able to report about a surprisingly large number of events, so don’t despair! Keep reading the weekly newsletter and I will make sure that you will find out about (nearly) everything that will be on.
Coming up are the September Fest, the Fringe Festival, the Opera Festival, the Theatre Festival, the Festival of World Food, Culture Night, Open House Dublin and then we are already quite close to the Christmas Markets. Not all are free (e.g. Theatre Festival, Fringe Festival and Opera Festival), but in previous years there have been free events as part of these festivals and I expect (and hope) the same will happen this year.
This weekend MANY of you will be in Stradbally at the Electric Picnic, so many might not even look at this Event Guide this week. But if you get a chance and even if you are away over the weekend, have a quick browse through the sections that are not for Fri/Sat/Sun, I am sure you will find some interesting stuff to read. :-)
And now to some “internal” things: My mail backlog is growing! If you have sent me a mail recently and I haven’t replied yet, please be patient. I am trying to reply to as many mails as possible, but my hours are limited and it takes a while to get through the many mails I get. Still, keep sending your comments and opinions, EVERYTHING will be read and all suggestions will be considered.

ENSEMBLE ICC – TICKET COMPETITION
Ensemble ICC is a new music band that consists of hugely talented and very accomplished young musicians who are focused on performing new works (they have premiered over 35 new works in just a few months) from composers of the Irish Composers’ Collective. The Irish Composers’ Collective (formerly the Young Composers’ Collective) was founded in 2003 and is committed to producing high-quality performances of music by its composer-members. An entirely democratic group, the ICC has over 35 members from backgrounds as diverse as jazz, electronica and traditional music. The ICC is a true community, providing support structures for composers and is, in particular, devoted to the professional development of those composers at the earlier stages in their careers. www.irishcomposerscollective.org
The Ensemble ICC is the performing wing of the Irish Composer’s Collective and with such a wide range of musical styles among the composers, you can imagine that the Ensemble ICC has to be incredibly flexible and adaptable. So from the sophisticated elegance of a classical chamber orchestra to the energetic and driven style of a rock band, the Ensemble is well able to impress across musical boundaries. The Ensemble consists of Cora Venus Lunny (Viola), Kate Ellis(Cello & Musical Director), Daniel Bodwell (Bass), Karl Rooney (Saxophone), Roger Moffat (Percussion).
On Thur 04 Sept the Ensemble ICC is performing from 20:00 in the Unitarian Church, 112 St. Stephen’s Green West, Dublin 2 (www.unitarianchurchdublin.org). The Esnemble will perform compositions from Amanda Feery, Scott McLaughlin, Benedict Schlepper-Connolly, Francis Heery, Laura Kilty, Simon O’Connor, Dónal Adams & Brian Bolger on the evening. UNSTOPPABLE BRILLIANCE – BOOK COMPETITION
Liberties Press offered two copies of the book “Unstoppable Brilliance – Irish Geniuses and Asperger’s Syndrome” by Antoinette Walker and Prof. Michael Fitzgerald for a competition. The book suggests that many of the most notable people in Irish politics, the arts and sciences may have exhibited traits of Asperger’s syndrome (a variant of autism) – and that much of their drive and success may in some way be connected to this condition. The competition is now closed and the winners of the books are Sara Gonzalez and Paul Allen. Congratulations!

IMPROVE THE TV PROGRAMME + WIN SOME MONEY
Have you ever wondered how you could tell a TV station if you liked a programme or if not without sending letters about everything you saw? In order to provide feed back you need to be on a viewer/media panel and such a viewer panel is a group of people who regularly (ideally on a near daily basis) tell a research organisation what they watched or listened to and what they thought of it. The research organisation makes this information available to TV or Radio stations and they can then use that as intelligence about viewer/listener preferences etc. With the Internet such feedback is relatively easily possible and for a number of months I am part of such a media panel. If you want to voice your opinions AND have a chance to win some money? Keep reading! :-)
In September 2007 I came across the Irish Media Survey, a media panel which is not only interested in TV viewers’, but as well in radio listeners’ opinion. The “Irish Media Survey” is run by the market research company GfK and the survey helps media organisations to understand how much people like the programmes that are shown on TV and played on Radio. As a member of this media panel, your opinion is heard AND you have the chance to win some prizes. Every day you can (but are not obliged to!) voice your opinion and I have it set so that I get a daily reminder mail. (It takes about 3 – 5 minutes per day to complete the survey.) Every month GfK does a draw for one prize of EUR 1000 and 400 prizes of EUR 5. Every time you fill in the information on their website you will get one point and when you have gathered a minimum of 10 points you will automatically take part in the draw. For every point after that you will get an additional entry into the prize draw. So the more often you do take part in the survey, the higher your chances are to win a price. I have won three times 5 Euro in the last few months. :-) It is not a huge amount, but the chances are significantly higher than for the lotto AND I feel that it gives me a chance to let TV and Radio Stations know my positive or negative opinion about programmes. :-P If you are interested in joining this media panel, you can do so by following this link:

WESTLINK TOLL BRIDGE
Last week I mentioned the new barrier-free tolling system for the Westlink M50 Toll Bridge. I mentioned some of the payment options, but Colm S. found more very interesting information for infrequent but regular users of the toll bridge and I would like to share this and his summary with you:
Colm explained to me that for infrequent M50 users (less than 5 trips a month) the cheapest option is to register for a “pay as you toll plus” tag at www.tolltag.ie (bookings.parkmagic.net/tolltag/#3). This is a free tag with a 10% admin fee and a cost of EUR 2 per bridge crossing. For people using the M50 once a week – the admin fee would work out at just EUR 0.80 a month. But if you are going to use the M50 more than 5 times a month – the 10% admin fee will come to more than the other provider’s EUR 1 fee. The initial top up on www.tolltag.ie is, however, EUR 40.
The eflow.ie video recognition account is next best for low volume users. This account has no admin fee but the toll fee is EUR 2.50 per journey. The slight advantage of this is you can pay after you use it – you don’t have to pre load a balance into the account. You can pay monthly by Credit Card, Laser or Direct Debit. If you are going to use the M50 more than five times a month – the cheapest option is to register for a free tag with a EUR 1 a month fee and a cost of EUR 2 per bridge crossing. Eflow.ie, Eazypass.ie, Directroute.ie and Etrip.ie all offer free tags and a EUR 1/month admin fee.
If you don’t register for a tag or a video recognition account – you will be charged EUR 3 per trip. Beware – you will have to pay by 20:00 the next day or you will incur hefty penalties of up to EUR 143. Payments can be made via credit card or laser over the phone or online. Also payments are accepted at Payzone outlets in many shops.

I still think it is outrageous that we taxpayers have to pay twice for this bridge, but that is a different story!

FIONA MURRAY – MERMAID ARTS CENTRE
“Night Ward” is the exhibition of paintings by Fionna Murray. Using photographs, film stills and memories as source material, her drawings and paintings are an accumulation of small truths that negotiate borders between separated realities. The exhibition runs from 29 Aug-27 Sept. The Mermaid Arts Centre is in Main Street, Bray, Co. Wicklow (www.mermaidartscentre.ie) and the Mermaid Gallery is open Monday – Saturday 10:00 – 18:00. RUBY & PIN AND DAVID MCGLYNN – DAME STREET GALLERY
“Photo-art meets Bronze Sculptures” is the underlying theme for this joint exhibition.
Ruby & Pin and David McGlynn will jointly exhibit a collection of their work from the 25-31 August in the Dame Street Gallery. Ruby & Pin, a photographic & pop-art combo, will display colourful and moody images to create something altogether new, exciting and different for your wall. Complementing this, Dublin-born sculptor David McGlynn presents a new work captured beautifully in bronze. The inspiration for these pieces is varied yet connected by the coastal environment where he lives.

PEOPLES PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION 2008
The 21st Annual Peoples Photography photographic exhibition will take place this year on 30 and 31 August 2008 from 10:00-18:00 each day. The exhibition is open to all photographers, professional, amateur, groups etc. The event is run on a non profit making basis with a charge of EUR15 being levied for each exhibitor to cover insurance and other expenses. Naturally the open-air exhibition is free for all visitors. The professional and amateur photographers will show their works on the railings of the North, East and South sides of St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2. You can see a huge amount of very varied types of photos and you have a chance to talk to the photographers directly about their work. In 2007 the impressive amount of 200 photographers took part and if you have ANY interest in photography you have to go to this event! KIDS @ DUNDRUM – DUNDRUM TOWN CENTRE
From Sat 30 Aug – Sun 07 Sept the Dundrum Town Centre is inviting children and their parents to “Kids @ Dundrum”. Featuring seminars from experts including child nutritionist and author Annabel Karmel, child psychologist and presenter of ‘Families in Trouble’, David Coleman, and presenter of RTE series ‘Baby on Board’, Grainne Ryan, Dundrum Town Centre is helping parents to prepare the family for the dreaded “Back to School”!
David Coleman, clinical psychologist and presenter of RTE series ‘Families in Trouble’ will host a seminar in Frangos World Cuisine, located on Level 3 on 04 Sept at 11:00 and will help parents devise strategies to deal with problems at home.
On Fri 05 September author and child nutrition expert Annabel Karmel will launch her new book, ‘Baby and Toddler Food Diary’. A busy mum herself, Annabel will then host a seminar in Frangos World Cuisine, located on Level 3 at 12:00, where she will share imaginative and useful tips and tricks to ensure even the fussiest child eats a balanced and healthy diet.
“First Aid for Infants” by Alice Walsh is taking place at 11:00 on Mon 01 Sept; and Leticia Merin’s “Baby Massage” on Wed 03 Sept at 11:00.
Throughout the week ‘Monkey Music’ workshops will introduce music to young children in a way they can understand and enjoy, ‘Clap Handies’ will encourage you and your child to have interactive play and floor-time, while Yoga Bug demonstrations will keep you and your children on your toes!
Children’s entertainment will be provided in the centre every day throughout the week, including learning games such as Leapster; handheld entertainment games including Spiderman, Madagascar; books and colouring materials; facepainters, balloon modellers, Funky Nails and Dundrum Town Centre story time.

The Visual Arts Workshop “Fairy Kingdoms” will take place in the Cowshed Theatre or – if the weather is good – outdoors in Farmleigh House on Sat 30 Aug at 13:30 for 10-12 year olds and at 15:30 for 4-6 year olds. “Create miniature kingdoms for the elves and fairies outdoors amongst the trees and flowers in Farmleigh gardens. HERITAGE WEEK
Heritage Week will run in Ireland from 24-31 Aug 2008. It’s a week long celebration of who we are and where we’ve come from. Heritage Week is part of European Heritage Days, a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union. In Ireland Heritage Week is co-ordinated by the Heritage Council with support from the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government.
There is something taking place in every county and most activities are free of charge or offer great value for money. Everyone is encouraged to get involved and activities range from fairs, night-time bat walks, wildlife tours and lectures to music recitals, historical re-enactments, and outdoor activities. Many heritage sites and stately homes will offer free admission or special concessions. You can contact the Heritage Council on 1850 200 878 or via mail to events@heritagecouncil.com. In the Dublin Area alone there are more than 200 (!!!!!!) events during that week and unfortunately it is not easy to gather them so that I can list them here in this Event Guide.
Last week I had planned to “build” my agenda for the weekend and to pack it full of Heritage Week events and I had intended to share this list of MY plans with you. However, the week was too busy on the day-job front and I didn’t get a chance yet to work out my weekend schedule. For this reason I unfortunately will have to leave you do your own research. FARMLEIGH PLANT FAIR – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
On Sun 31 Aug from 10:00-17:15 the Farmleigh Plant Fair is taking place in Farmleigh House at the northern end of Phoenix Park. The description of the event goes like that: “Farmleigh are delighted to host their late summer plant fair as part of the gardening programme for 2008. In an outdoor designed gardening village 35 of the most prominent plant exhibitors from all over Ireland will have a potpourri of rare and unusual plants for sale. This is an unique opportunity for seasoned and fledgling gardeners to get expert advice on all types of plants and shrubs. An expert gardening panel has been assembled to advise and answer any queries that you might have about plants or gardening. The panel includes celebrity television gardener John Cushnie regular panellist on BBC 4 Gardeners Question Time and presenter of BBC 1 The Greenmount Garden, Carmel Duighnam gardening writer and lecturer, Elizabeth Morgan landscape conservationist within the OPW and a selection of tree experts from the Tree Council of Ireland. FAMILY SUNDAY – NATIONAL PRINT MUSEUM
On Sun 17, 24 and 31 Aug the National Print Museum is inviting to workshops and training and – rather unusual for the National Print Museum – all is free. The Museum is in Haddington Road in Dublin 4 and the entrance is to the left from the Beggar’s Bush pub. The museum is open from 11:00-17:00.
On arrival at the museum you will receive an Action Pack filled with activity sheets to keep you busy as you look around the Museum. Throughout the museum there are Action stations where you can try your hand at a traditional method of printing or make your very own printer’s hat.

Illustration Session from 12:00-13:00: Join our expert Illustrators including P.J. Lynch, Adrienne Geoghegan & Orla Roche.

ART WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN – NATIONAL GALLERY
On Sunday 31 Aug from 15:00 an Arts Workshop for children from 4-10 years will take place at the National Gallery on Merrion Square West. The Kids Sunday Art Workshop is entitled “Peasant Wedding” by Pieter Brueghel the Younger and with Mary Broderick. PINT AND PICTURE FILM CLUB
Howard Linnane (086 3614787) is running a film club, in co-operation with the pub “Russells of Ranelagh”. The film club screens Irish short films at the beginning of the evening and usually a feature film after the short films. The event takes place upstairs in “Russells” in Ranelagh and is free.
The next screening will be on Mon 01 Sept. Howard hasn’t fully decided on a starting time yet and I know that this makes it difficult to arrive on time. ;-) But I suggest that you go there for a 19:15 or 19:30 start and I am sure you won’t miss too much. The main film on the 01 Sept are actually TWO films, or rather two documentaries:
The first one is ‘Yellow Gate Women’ (dir Margaretta D’Arcy (2006)), an hour-long documentary on the Greenham Common Women and their protest against the siting of Cruise missiles at USAF Greenham Common in England from the early 1980s on to very recent times. The second documentary is ‘Happiness’ (dir Conor Horgan (2005)), a 27-minutes-long documentary short, in which the director travelled around Ireland asking a wide variety of people for their definitions of the word “Happiness” which they all give to camera.
(Russells of Ranelagh is on the main street, just down from the Luas station and across from the Triangle, it is the pub with the nice balcony at the front).

A FRENCH GLANCE AT EUROPE – PHOTO EXHIBITION
Following the July exhibition “A European Glance at France”, the Cultural Service of the Embassy of France in Ireland now presents an exhibition entitled “A French Glance at Europe”. For the first exhibition 27 photographers from the 27 EU countries photographed France, now 27 French photographers took pictures of the EU countries to show us the cultural diversity and richness of today’s Europe. The exhibition will run from 02-17 Sept in the European Union House in 18 Dawson Street, Dublin 2. Admission is free and the opening times are Mon-Fri: 09:30 – 17:00 (Closed on Saturday and Sunday). GROUP SHOW – GALLERY OF PHOTOGRAPHY
“Based on our Current Science…” is a group show in the Gallery of Photography with works from the artists Ulrika Ferm, Martin Healy, Seán Hillen, Paul Murnaghan, Lee Welch, a television interview between JZ Knight and Merv Griffin and Wright & Griffiths.The show will run from 14 Aug – 21 Sept. and I have listed this show before. However this week a further component will take place: The exhibition will be accompanied by three September video screenings in Temple Bar in the first week of September. The screened videos/films are ‘Latoon’ by Sean Lynch, ‘Explaining Magic to Mercer’ by Susan MacWilliam and ‘The Carriage’ by Diego Guiterrez. The screening will take place after dark on Meeting House Square on Wed, Thurs and Fri 4, 5 and 6 September 2008. The opening reception and in parallel the launch of a limited edition catalogue will take place on Wed 13 September 2008 at 18:30. FILM SCREENING – INSTITUTO CERVANTES
The Spanish Cultural Institute “Instituto Cervantes” is showing a series of films exploring the notions of documentary, video-art and avant-garde cinema. The films do look interesting, but the translation from Spanish is not very helpful! So, you have to take a bit of a gamble if you don’t understand the Spanish description here

The English translation is a little too literal in some aspects and I find it hard to understand: dublin.cervantes.es/en/culture_spanish/upcoming_activities_culture_spanish.shtm. The films will be shown on 02, 10, 11, 17, 18 + 24 Sept at 18:30 in the Instituto Cervantes in Lincoln House, Lincoln Place, Dublin 2 (just opposite the Dental Clinic at the back of TCD). All films are in Spanish with English subtitle. The films are presented by Esperanza Collado, the director of the contemporary art and cinema publication “Spectrum”.

HURLING CUBED
Do you play Hurling or are fascinated about it? Then this is event is for you. If you have never heard about Hurling, then you should check this out first: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurling. Guinness is the Hurling sponsor in Ireland and they have invented the “Hurling Cubed” tournament, which is totally different than a normal hurling game but promises to be interesting: In a plexiglas “cage”, 3 players per team play for a total of 3 minutes. They use a shorter than normal hurley (hurling stick/club) and a soft sliotar (hurling ball) and have to achieve three goals to win. Hurling is an amazingly fast game with impressive playing and ball control skills and I am sure that it will be interesting to watch the tournament, which will take place in Dublin Castle from Thurs until Sat.
Originally it was planned that the Dublin tournament will take place from Wednesday until Friday, but for some reasons all events on Wednesday have been cancelled, so that only Thursday + Friday are left for the Dublin tournament.
The schedule for Thursday (04 Sept) is:

LATIN AMERICA – PUBLIC LECTURE
“A new wave of reform in Latin America…From Allende to Morales and Lugo.” is the title of a talk by Hugh O’Shaugnessy, who is a reporter with four decades of experience covering Latin American issues. PHANTOM FIRST FRIDAY
Since July, Phantom 105.2 have been running the “Phantom First Friday” event at ALT (Andrews Lane Theatre) on the first Friday of the month. The next event is on Fri 05 Sep. The event consists of live performances from two up-and-coming Irish bands, with a headline set by a more established Irish band. At the next “Phantom First Friday” Autamata, New Amusement and guests will perform followed by a DJ set with Sinister Pete. Doors are at 20:00 and admission is free before 22:30 (EUR 7 after 22:30). I will indulge this weekend in the Heritage Week and will go to the Peoples Photography Exhibition. So, it won’t be a boring weekend, but, hey, it has been a LOOONG time since the last time that I was bored. :-)
