There is an interesting weekend! Not only are there lots of events, but as well the Euro 2008 final where Germany will meet Spain. A difficult one for me. I will certainly support Germany, but for a number of reasons, the team I would have supported most amongst the other participants is Spain, so my preference would be a friendly draw between the two teams. Strangely I can’t see that happening! :-)

One of many events this weekend is the new (and potentially once-off) Viking Festival on Saturday and Sunday. The “Sea Stallion of Glendalough” the replica of a Viking boat that was on display in the National Museum since July 2007 is leaving Ireland again to sail back to Denmark and I will be at the farewell party because the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, who I work with, will sing there. The event already starts at 09:30 on Sunday morning and we need your support. So please come out to help us a bit at that early hour, it would be a pity if we sang for the sea gulls only. Does this tempt you even more: Unconfirmed rumours have it that there will be free coffee and Danishes. :-)
I got a HUGE amount of mails this week with event information. Thanks a lot to everyone who contacted me. I try replying to everyone, but it doesn’t work always. I hope you won’t get upset or feel under-appreciated if you don’t get a reply. The amount of mails is just to high at times to reply to each and everyone. With all that interesting information coming in, this Event Guide might get longer and longer, but I hope you are used to the pages and pages by now and have developed your own personal strategy to work your way through the information.
This week, I can’t tell you much about the past weekend, not because it disappeared in a party-filled haze, but because I was helping Patrick Cumiskey – together with Michal, Rachel, Ray and Edsko – to teach 51 people how to defend themselves if they need to, using Krav Maga, an Israelian self-defence system. If you want to find out more about this one, of my many hobbies, drop me a mail and if there is enough interest, I will try to negotiate an Event Guide discount for you for the training course.
And another event that I want to mention specifically: It is not free, but I am involved, so bear with me and please endure this little plug. ;-) On Wednesday 02 July, Kevin Doyle, The Way it Was Orchestra and the Graceland Gospel Choir (which includes me) perform in the Sugar Club supporting Colette Henry’s fund raising event for the Temple Street Children’s Hospital. TANGO CLASSES
Mary O’Brien, who won tickets for the Tango class last week had a great evening and praised John and Erika. So even if it is only the little toe in your body that would like to try out tango once, give it a go. :-) The guys really come recommended by now three Event Guide readers.

But just for your information (give in to that itching little toe!!): Natural Tango (naturaltango.blogspot.com) are running Tango classes every Monday in Turk’s Head in Parliament Street, near Temple Bar. The classes are 19:30-20:30 Beginners, 20:30-21:30 Intermediate-Advanced, from 21:30 Tango Club to practise what you have learned. The classes are drop-in classes and you don’t need a partner to participate. The cost for a class (Beginners or Intermediate/Advanced) PLUS entry to the Tango Club is EUR 10 and you don’t need to pre-book.

CULTURE BUS
From this week a free shuttle bus service will be provided linking some of Dublin’s main cultural attractions. The service is called “Cultúr Bus” and it will be available on Sundays from 12:00-17:00 until the end of September. It is funded by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism.
The bus will serve Merrion Square (National Gallery of Ireland); Dame Street (Chester Beatty Library and Temple Bar); Market Street off Thomas Street (Guinness Storehouse); Military Road (Irish Museum of Modern Art); Wolfe Tone Quay (National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks); Parnell Square (Dublin City Gallery, the Hugh Lane; Dublin Writers’ Museum and the James Joyce Centre); Nassau Street (National Museum of Ireland); Trinity College (The Book of Kells and the new Science Gallery).
The service runs every 30 minutes and the first bus departs from the Merrion Square entrance of the National Gallery at 12:00.

FARMLEIGH SUMMER SEASON – PHOENIX PARK
The nice state-owned Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park has already impressed with great advent and easter events and will provide more to enrich the cultural landscape in Dublin. This summer, Farmleigh House will be the venue for drive-in movies, a beer festival, live music and a book fair – and all for free.
The events will take place from the beginning of July and you will be able to enjoy a series of classic movies on a huge outdoor screen as well as see horror films and musicals.
A series of salon music concerts will take place which includes musicians such as Muzsikas from Hungary and Mali’s Ballake Cissokho. In addition experts from RTÉ’s The Dealers show will offer advice at an antique and rare book fair in July.
Athletics Ireland is organising a Family Fitness Festival, which includes a 5km open road race; the Farmleigh Affair Festival August offers two days of free music from both national and international artists and a two-day SeptemberFest 2008, loosely based on Munich’s Oktoberfest, will feature Ireland’s craft brewers showcasing traditional ales, beers and ciders as well as speciality food.

I will try to keep track of all the events and will notify you of everything as much as possible. Please note that some of the events are free but ticketed and the ticket application deadline is VERY early. (Example: The deadline for ticketed event in July – even at the end of July – was 23 June and we have obviously missed that.) I will try to keep an eye on the ticket application deadlines as well, but I strongly suggest you have a look through the brochure to identify what event interest you and check the requirement for tickets.
SUBURB CULTURAL FESTIVALS
It is a disappointing development that the suburbs of Dublin organise brilliant events, but don’t want to tell anybody about them. By coincidence I got in contact with the main organiser in Chapelizod and he provided a lot of information so that I could publicise their events. The Tallaght-Rathfarnham Arts Trail, was something I only found on a single website. The Dundrum Arts and Cultural Festival with a great list of really interesting events slipped totally through my fingers (it started on 22 June) and only through an AA Roadwatch notice I found out about it. It shows as well a serious weakness of all the event listing websites in Dublin. It seems that Dublin is limited to the area within the canal as far as they are concerned. I don’t have a solution to that problem (unfortunately I can’t chase events and search for festivals even more), but it would be great if there was a central point where all suburbs and towns and villages outside the canals would provide their information to. UNDERGROUND – ROAD RECORDS
As part of the Darklight Festival “Underground” is an exhibition featuring 10 artists, 3 music documentaries and an accompanying publication, all dealing with the changes in independent music culture over the last fifteen years, tracking the relationship between the local and the global, society and technology and charting the erasure of the boundary between the public and the private. The exhibition will take place in the basement of Road Records, an independent record shop on Fade Street in Dublin 2 and will be on show from Fri 27 June – Sun 6 July 2008. On Fri 27 June from 18:30 there will be a Launch Street Party at Road Records in Fade Street.

SONIC YOUTH – GREEN ON RED
From 27 June – 26 July Green On Red Gallery presents “Sonic Youth” an exhibition of 7 international video artists whose work offers an extensive and in-depth exploration of the various possibilities of the crossover between popular culture and video art. ÁBHAR AGUS MEON EXHIBITION SERIES
This is an exhibition series celebrating Art and Archaeology. In June/July 2008, 23 international contemporary artists will take part in the Ábhar agus Meon exhibition series in Dublin as part of Ireland’s hosting of the Sixth World Archaeological Congress (29 June – 4 July 2008). Directed by Dr Ian Russell of the Humanities Institute of Ireland, UCD, exhibitions will occur at four venues throughout the city involving installations and interventions by artists exploring the themes, processes and practices of art and archaeology.

The Irish Museum of Modern Art will host a new commission by Fiona Hallinan with sound designer Caoimhin O’Ragallaigh. Titled “The You That Is In It”, the audio installation will guide visitors through an intervention into the spaces of the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) and the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. The installation will be open 30 June – 16 November 2008.

JANAINA TSCHÄPE – IRISH MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
The German/Brazilian artist Janaina Tschäpe exhibits at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) from 25 June-28 Sept . POSTERS OF THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR – INSTITUTO CERVANTES
The exhibition features the Spanish Civil War posters selected from the Pablo Iglesias Foundation, whose collection currently exceeds some 2000 copies. It is regarded an extraordinary testimony of republican poster–making, mostly for its scope and variety of themes, authors, institutions and the publishing organizations. The republican model followed the pattern of the First World War’s posters, reinforcing the effectiveness of the message and resorting to imagination through the common motives of isolation, political symbols, but also education, hygiene and warnings against abuse that may lead to war. The exhibition is on show from 26 June – 29 August and it can be visited Mon-Thurs 14:00-19:00, Fri 11:00-14:00. It is on show in the Instituto Cervantes, Lincoln House, Lincoln Place, 2 Dublin.

SUMMER PRINTFEST – GRAPHIC STUDIO GALLERY
From 19 June – 09 August 2008 the Graphic Studio Gallery’s exhibition “Summer Printfest” is taking place. DUNDRUM ARTS AND CULTURAL FESTIVAL
A well kept secret was this festival in Dundrum, by coincidence I found out about it when reading a road closure notice from the AA. Then I searched further and found am extensive list of great events that took place from 22 June and will go on until 29 June. Unfortunately the website (www.freewebtown.com/dundrumfestival/events.htm) doesn’t specify if the events are free or not, but I would expect that many of them are. Music Workshops, Dance evenings, German-Irish Night, Polish-Irish Night, Street Theatre, Clowns and Jugglers, Fireworks Displays and a Ceili Mor were the events on the list. Some are still about to take place on Fri, Sat or Sun. Have a look at the website if you live near or in Dundrum and if you hear about any other events during the year, please tell me about them.
YOGA – TEMPLE BAR
Every Friday free Sahaja Yogais taught and practised for free in Temple Bar. A free Sahaja Yoga Meditation program is available to members of the public every Friday at 19:30 at 4/5 Eustace Street (bell 3, next to the IFI), Temple Bar.
Sahaja Yoga is a unique method of meditation based on an experience called Self Realization that can occur within each human being. The process is described as ‘an inner transformation takes place by which one becomes moral, integrated and balanced’. The meeting organisers welcome newcomers. VIKING FESTIVAL – WOOD QUAY AMPHITHEATRE
On the actual site of Dublin’s first Viking settlement at Wood Quay behind or in between the Dublin City Council Buildings the Viking Festival will take place on Sat 28 June and Sun 29 June.
Watch Viking battle re-enactments and interact with Vikings. Listen to music performances and watch live animal displays. Browse an extensive market in Essex street West that includes a Hog Roast, Celtic Handmade jewellery, fresh Strawberries, Traditional Homemade Jam, Homemade breads, and wrought Iron work.
The Wood Quay Amphitheatre is behind Christ Church and between the City Council buildings and the event will take place on both days from 12:00-18:00.
On Sunday the 29 June The Sea Stallion Viking Ship will depart from Dublin’s Docklands. Entertainment and Music is provided from 09:30-12:00.
The event organisers, Dublin City Council, describe these activities:
Mingle with authentically dressed Viking re-enactors displaying a variety of crafts including, a Blacksmith, Silversmith, Leather Worker, Textiles Worker, Cook, boat-builder and woodworker all in an area with authentic tents and exhibitions.

The Market will consist of traders in organic and whole food produce as well as meats and cheese. It will lead the public up Essex Street to the Amphitheatre where the Viking village will be placed.
The Viking Village and Living History displays will consist of
- Living History Encampment: an area with authentic tents and exhibitions. Considering the theme of the event, crafts displays based around boat building and woodwork should be a principle feature. Other crafts would include a Blacksmith, Silversmith, Leather Worker, Textiles Worker and Cook. A display of Falconry is also planned. All of the Living History People will be wear authentic Viking dress and use authentic replica tools. Members of the public will be able to walk around this area and interact with the different Characters.
- Military Display: At the appointed times choreographed fight scenes and weapon displays will take place. After each skirmish a short presentation on the weapons and their uses and history will be given. Members of the public will be given the opportunity to ask questions and hold the weapons and armour.
It sounds very very interesting and I suggest that you go to this event. It will probably never happen again if it is directly linked to the Viking ship departure, so use your chance to experience it.
PIPEWORKS FESTIVAL
From its beginnings in 1980 as the Dublin International Organ & Choral Festival, Pipeworks has brought to Irish audiences a diverse programme of music-making with the organ at its centre. Every three years, pipeworks organises a ten-day festival and the next one will take place from 20-29 June 2008.

The Tallaght-Rathfarnham Arts Trail is coming to an end (a little more information in the SUNDAY section) and the final events on Saturday are:

DOCKLANDS LIFFEY SWIM
The organisers say “The Docklands Liffey Swim is an enjoyable but challenging 1.5 km swim organised by the NAC Masters Swimming Club. It’s a challenging and rewarding swim in the River Liffey and upwards of 200 swimmers are expected to participate.” Not my preferred type of enjoyment, but watching the swimmers is good fun. :-) The Men’s event starts at 17:30 and the Women’s race at 18:00. The race will start at Customs House Quay. For more detail about registration, visit the NAC Masters website. Please note, this is not THE Liffey Swim. The main Liffey Swim will take place in September and will go over 3km with over 300 participants. The event on this Saturday is the DOCKLANDS Liffey Swim. Nevertheless, it is interesting to watch

Do you remember that I in April I told you about the Technothreads exhibition in the Science Gallery. This exhibition is still ongoing and there are a good view ticketed but free additional events. I was wondering if I should list this event because it is unfortunately unavailable to you. :-( Only 8000 tickets were available in total, the website for requesting tickets was most of the time unavailable, the advertisement seemed to only kick in AFTER the tickets were gone and all in all, it is a good idea, but a disappointing result. However, it could be that you were lucky and got tickets OR your friends tell you about the event and if you had never heard about it you would wonder why I didn’t list it, so here is the information:

FOOTBALL WORLD CUP 2008 IN DUBLIN
No, no, don’t worry, it is not that the sleepless night drove me totally mad! This is an event organised by Gil Berkovich and it is indeed an international football competition. Gil writes: “I would like to invite you to the World Cup tournament 2008. This will be the third year that we are running this event. This will be the BIGGEST sport event of the summer! The 28th of June has been chosen as this is not only well into the Irish summer, but also one day only before the Final of the Euro 2008 football championship. Our aim is to ensure that we attract as many spectators and immigrants as we can for this event. The event will run from 11:00 – 18:00. Additional attractions planned for the day are: Music from around the world, Break-dance Show, Big Raffle draw, Bouncing Castles, Clowns, Mimic, Stilt Walking, Balloon Modelling, Face painting, and much more… One of the highlights of the event will be the BIG PARADE half way through the tournament. The BIG parade will feature all the participating countries with their flags – in the same manner of the Olympics- in front of an applauding crowd.
We want to maximize the number of people who attend the event and for the benefit of the general public and players there will be FREE transport from Connolly Train Station. It is a little late for you to register to participate in the football games, but you can still watch and enjoy all the other events during the day.
Here are Gil’s explanations regarding the football tournament:
“World Cup Tournament: Teams will take part in a 7-a-Side Soccer Tournament on the 28th June 2008 and will be held at the AUL Sports Grounds in Clonshaugh.
Teams will be placed into EIGHT GROUPS of FOUR TEAMS. Each team will play all the other 3 teams in their group. The Tournament will consist of 32 teams of 7-a-side from 32 countries around the world. This will be in the same manner like the real World Cup that is playing every 4 years. The 32 teams will be divided into 8 groups of 4 and will play in their respective groups each team 3 matches of 10 minutes each half. Then the TOP two teams from each group will qualify to the TOP 16.
The top 16 will then play for the CUP. This will be a knock out stages until the final of the Cup. The Bottom two teams in each group will qualify for the BOTTOM 16.
The bottom 16 will play for the Plate. This will also be a knock out stages until the final of the Plate. The matches will be played from 11:00am until 18:00pm where the finals will be played.
The main goal is to gather as many Immigrants from all around the world that are living in Ireland – to interact & cohabit together for a fun day, at the AUL Complex

SEA STALLION FAREWELL – DOCKLANDS
As part of the Viking Festival, the Viking replica ship “Sea Stallion” which was on display in an exhibition in the National Museum (Collins Barracks) since June 2007, will go back to where it was built in Denmark. 60 people will sail the boat from Ireland via Scotland and Norway back to Denmark.
A celebration will be held to send the ship back in style and this celebration will start already at 09:30 with the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir (until 10:15). Later Irish and Danish Shanty Singers and Danish Fiddlers will perform before the ship will leave at 11:45. The festivities will take place on Customs House Quay (north side) at the Sean O’Casey Bridge (Pedestrian Bridge near the IFSC).

WE ARE HERE for ROLLER BLADERS – GRAND CANAL SQUARE
The above event is for “footed” people but has a component for roller bladders as well. Roller bladders and Skaters are welcome to take part in the Mr Whippy Event on Grand Canal Square. The bladders and skaters meet at 12:00 for some skating to the music. A slalom session will be set up and you will be invited to try slaloms and tricks if you wish and the event will finish with a “speed slalom competition” for the people that need a challenge. Beginners, don’t have to worry, Grand Canal Square is completely car free so you can skate safely there and since we are bringing the Meet&Train Skate group from Phoenix Park to Grand Canal Square, we are more than happy to help and advise beginners as well on their first “steps” on roller blades.

In the fantastical world of Medieval Knights, join a company of travelling players as they tell the heroic deeds of perhaps the greatest King of any time or place. Join Arthur on his journey as his tale unfolds with sword, sorcery and song.

NATIONAL PLAY DAY 2008 – CABINTEELY
Sun 29 June is the National Play Day 2008 and led by the National Play Resource Centre, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council will organise a Play Day for the County in Cabinteely Park on Sunday June 29 from 14:00-17:00. Young residents in the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown area will get to enjoy a play day full of street games, storytelling and getting messy this weekend. Participation is free, but tickets are required and are available from Cabinteely Libray.
CAPOEIRA DEMONSTRATION
I am not 100% sure if this event is demonstration is taking place again this week in Grafton Street, but keep your eyes peeled for it! ;-) If it will take place, it will be on 29 June at 13:00: A Capoeira Street Roda is taking place in Grafton Street. This will be a great demonstration of Capoeira, the Brazilian blend of dance, martial art and game, with the real music and instruments from Brazil. Participants form a roda (circle) and take turns playing instruments, singing, and sparring in pairs in the center of the circle. The dance/game/martial art is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, and extensive use of groundwork, as well as sweeps, kicks, and headbutts.
These Street rodas are going to take place most Sundays during Summer time. Mundo Capoeira also organises workshops and performances regularly and you can find information about their events on www.capoeiraireland.com.

While working together on a film they are constantly confronted with pictures from their own histories, which they use to shape the film. BRAY SUMMER FESTIVAL
The Bray Summer Festival will kick-off with the first event on Fri 04 July: “Yurodny” will perform on the Mermaid Civic Plaza from 13:00-14:00.
