I hope the arrival of this week’s Event Guide won’t cause, shock, panic and confusion along the lines “Oh my god, is it already Friday?” :-) No, relax, it is just Thursday morning. But I will be away for the weekend and because I can’t deprive you of your – hopefully – much awaited fix of event news I am sending this mail one day earlier this week.
Hey, did you realise that this Event Guide is a “golden anniversary” Event Guide? FIFTY issues!! If you want to find out my address to send presents, just let me know. :-)))) And in two weeks time with Issue 52 we can celebrate the first birthday, so if anyone wants to plan a 1st Birthday Party, I am happy to come. Hehehe.
Last weekend was mad busy because both Soul Festival and Africa Day were on and I know from a good few of you that you made it to both or to one or the other. I seriously hope that the two festivals will not happen on the same weekend next year because I could have stayed at either of them for the whole day, instead of dividing my time. Oh and I HOPE you had a chance to see the “Secret Garden” exhibition in Iveagh Gardens. It was really great and I found the Iveagh Gardens to be absolutely magical.
The coming weekend is a bank holiday weekend and the Maritime Festival is on over three days. Then in two weeks time the Street performance World Championship will take place. Make sure you can go to both!

FLAMENCO – WORKSHOP
Sólo Flamenco, the Irish based international Flamenco group is holding another workshop in Dublin with acclaimed Spanish flamenco dancer, choreographer and teacher Felipe de Algeciras. The competition last week for two tickets got a great response and following that Solo Flamenco has made another pair of tickets available. ZAMBIA IMMERSION FUNDRAISING CONCERT
The academic year is coming to an end and the great “Rush Hour Recital” concerts organised by the Student’s Union of the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) will take a break. To leave with a band, the RIAM Student’s Union has organised another concert that will feature a variety of classical music performed by some of the talented students and staff of the Academy. The concert will take place in the Katherine Brennan Hall, Royal Irish Academy of Music, Westland Row at 19:00 on Thursday 05 June and the proceeds will go to the Zambia Immersion Project. Tickets are EUR 15/10, however Christopher Rooney, who is the performance officer of the Student’s Union has made a pair of tickets available for the readers of the Dublin Event Guide. LIGHTS, CAMERY, DYNAMITE – BOOK COMPETITION
The Liberties Press book launch is over, but you can still win the book they launched on Wednesday. “Lights, Camera, Dynamite: The Adventures of a Special Effects Director” is a book by Gerry Johnston, who has worked in special effects for the last forty years, and established Ireland’s first special effects company – Special Effects Ireland. His memoir tells his life in special effects and many stories about working with David Lean, John Boorman, Stanley Kubrick, Sergio Leone, Neil Jordan, Steven Spielberg and Jim Sheridan, as well as some of the world’s most respected actors such as Sharon Stone, Pierce Brosnan, Tom Hanks, Daniel Day Lewis, Ursula Andress, Julie Andrews, Colin Farrell, Sean Connery, and James Mason. I read some excerpts and it seems to be a really interesting book.

BALLYMUN GOSPEL CHOIR CONCERT
The Ballymun Gospel Choir and Band, a sister choir to the Gardiner Street Choir with which I am involved, will perform a fundraiser concert for the Simon Community, where they will sing a variety of contemporary uplifting songs and well-known Gospel songs that have been arranged specially for them. The concert will take place in St. Ann’s Church in Dawson Street, Dublin 2 on Sat 14 June at 20:00.
This concert wants to highlight the ongoing plight of homeless people and the vital work of the Dublin Simon Community. The Dublin Simon Community offers people a “continuum of care” throughout the stages of homelessness. It includes contacting rough sleepers on the streets through its rough sleeper team and soup run; emergency shelter; supported and transitional housing; resettlement; learning and development; alcohol and detox services; and the tenancy sustainment service.
The tickets for the concert are sold at the door (I don’t know yet for what price, but I will find out.) and you are more than welcome to pay for it :-) , but the Ballymun Choir have made a pair of tickets available for you to win. Lilian Lau made me aware of “Metroblogs” and suggested that I would include it in this section. Metroblogs initially started off in LA as an alternative news source but has since expanded into other cities as information points, mostly on a rather casual basis. Herself and a few others are writing the “Dublin Metroblogs” and are currently working on improving the readership to this blog and to encourage participation from a wider group of people. If you are in Dublin for less than a year and were wondering why suddenly and without warning over the last 3-4 weeks a HUGE amount of women (only women!) were seen running in the streets, then the mystery can be solved now: The June bank holiday is traditionally the date for the Woman’s Mini Marathon. Where lots and lots of women run or walk 10km for different charities. If the running women worried you in recent weeks and made you wonder it they know something you don’t and maybe you should run as well and what do you do if you are a man and where do you run to and …. HELP!! ;-) Then chill out and look forward to Tuesday when all will become normal again and you will NOT see lots of women running anymore…until next year. :-P

CHRISTOPHER HARRINGTON & JOHN TRAVERS – THISISNOTASHOP
“Placeways” is a video installation that explores the consequences of personal displacement. The exhibition is a collaborative art project involving asylum seekers, refugees and migrants and engages with ideas of place, safety, home, transition, departure and arrival. “Placeways” runs from 29 May – 01 June and has been designed by Christopher Harrington and John Travers. The launch is on Thurs 29 May at 18:00 with Guest Speaker George Seremba (Ugandan Playwright). It will take place in Thisisnotashop and is supported by SPIRASI, a a humanitarian, intercultural, non-governmental organisation that works with asylum seekers, refugees and other disadvantaged migrant groups, with special concern for survivors of torture.

“Moving Worlds” is a film series on migration and integration. From May to November 2008 feature films and documentaries from Austria, France, Germany, Israel, Scotland, Spain, United Kingdom and USA will be screened weekly.

The first part of the series will run from 22 May until 10 July 2008 with a screening every Thursday evening at 18:00. Part two will take place from 2 October 2008 until 20 November 2008.

MARITIME FESTIVAL – DUBLIN DOCKLANDS
After the Soul Festival, the Docklands Maritime Festival is the second big event in the Open Air Festival calendar of this year. The Festival starts on Friday (30 May) and goes until Monday. The opening hours are Friday 30 May 12:00-19:00, Saturday 31 May 12:00-19:00, Sunday 01 June 11:00-19:00, Monday 02 June 11:00-18:00.
Tall ships, Street entertainment, Music and a big Outdoor Summer Market are the main attractions of this well organised festival.

Street Theatre and the Concerts on the main stage and the acoustic stage were always the main attractions for me. This year the Volvo Ocean Race Simulator is on site as well and you can experience a few minutes of a high speed sailing ocean race for free. I expect the queue will be long, so consider that in your planning.
The atmosphere at the Maritime Festival is always very relaxed and friendly and if you are in Dublin this weekend, you should definitely make your way to the Docklands. Go towards the IFSC and near the Famine Memorial the festival starts and nearly stretches to the Point Theatre.
CAFE MARKET
I had never before heard about this market, but watch out for it, it could be interesting: The Cafe Market takes place on the last Saturday of every month from 13:00-17:00 in the Curved St Cafe, Temple Bar. Browse the stalls of clothes (a mix of new designs, vintage and second hand), jewellery and art while enjoying the great coffee and relaxed atmosphere of the Curved St Cafe.

DUBLIN SPANISH NIGHT
Are you interested in Spanish music and culture and would you like to get together with people that like the same? The Dublin Spanish Night is your perfect opportunity to experience the fun and excitement of a Spanish party right here, in Dublin.
On Sat 31 May, the new “Dublin Spanish Night” will be launched in Liberty Hall at the Liffey and it planned to have such a Spanish party every Saturday. In the first night the admission is free and this is your chance to try it out and to see if you like what is provided.
Each evening will offer an informal Sevillanas class for all levels, a variety of live performances, including Flamenco guitar and dance performances, and will also feature a Latin music DJ. The bar will be open till 1am.
Dancers from local Flamenco group, Sólo Flamenco, will be there from 20:00 to teach an informal Sevillanas class for all levels. The DJ will then start playing some traditional Flamenco tracks and you will get to try out your new moves on the dance floor. If you are Spanish and know how to dance Sevillanas, come along and help the rest out. ;-) Each evening will also feature some live performances, including but not limited to occasional Flamenco guitar and dance performances. The opening night will see a really special Flamenco show, featuring Sólo Flamenco and a wealth of special guests.
Doors open at 21:00 for the party and admission is free in the launch night. The show will start at 10pm and will be followed by a DJ and a bar till 01:00. BLOOM IN THE PARK
I only mention this event because you might have seen the big tents in Phoenix Park and might have wondered what they are for. This event does absolutely NOT fit in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), but I will still explain what it is: Bord Bia is running “Bloom in the Park”. It has nothing to do with James Joyce and Bloom’s Day, which will take place in just about 2 weeks. Bloom in the Park is instead a gardening exhibition and the admission prices are, in my opinion, EXTREMELY steep with EUR 25 for a day ticket.

The Rollerblading “Meet&Train” is meeting again this Sunday at 13:00 at the Papal Cross. Every Sunday from September to the end of June the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir and the Ballymun Gospel Choir sing at masses in their respective churches. The Gardiner Street Gospel Mass is at 19:30 in Gardiner Street Church at the top of Upper Gardiner Street (near the junction with Dorset Street) and Ballymun Gospel Mass is at 19:00 in Shangan Road Church (turn right before the Ballymun Plaza Hotel/Travellodge and you will find the church after 150 metres on the left). The two choirs are related and you probably know by now that I do the Sound Engineering for the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir. Both choirs take a break over the summer and for the Gardiner Street Choir the last mass before the summer is on the 21 June and I assume in Ballymun it is either the same weekend or the weekend after that.

WOMEN’S MINI MARATHON
The Women’s Mini Marathon will take place on Monday and it will start at 15:00. The Mini Marathon (10 km) is in aid of charities and every runner can choose what charity she is running for. In the past men dressed as women were “endured”, but it seems that the organisers are trying to be strict this year. Still if you are male and you want to run, you might not be able to do that officially (i.e. you won’t get a medal), but unofficially everybody can run. The start is at Fitzwilliam Square and the Finish at St. Stephen’s Green and the course and all other information is provided here www.womensminimarathon.ie. The Mini Marathon takes place in any weather!

RUAILLE BUAILLE – LUCAN CHILDREN’S ARTS FESTIVAL

The leading Israeli human rights activist Jeff Halper is visiting Ireland. For thirty years Jeff Halper has been one of the leading figures in the Israeli peace movement. CONTEMPORARY MUSIC CENTRE – SEMINAR
“AMP – A Meeting Place” is a series of cross-arts interaction seminars for composers, performers, painters, sculptors, animators, filmmakers, dancers and actors. Organised by the Contemporary Music Centre, the series, AMP, is designed to give musicians and artists the chance to interact, discuss, and learn about the ways in which they can impact on each other’s work. The format for each evening will include short
presentations by guest speakers, while also allowing the chance for open discussion.
The fourth and last seminar “AMP 4 – Music & Party” is taking place on Thurs 05 June at 19:30 in the CMC in Fishamble Street. ZAMBIA IMMERSION FUNDRAISING CONCERT
The Students’ Union of the Royal Irish Academy of Music presents one of the highlights in their recently inaugurated ‘Rush Hour Recital’ series. The concert will feature a variety of classical music performed by some of the talented students and staff of the Academy. The concert will take place in the Katherine Brennan Hall, Royal Irish Academy of Music, Westland Row at 19:00 on Thursday 05 June and the proceeds will go to the Zambia Immersion Project. Performing in the concert will be internationally acclaimed soloist, and director of the Academy John O’Conor. This promises to be a most enjoyable evening of superb music as well as raising money for a most worthy cause. This is not a free event, but if you checked the COMPETITION section you saw that the nice people from the RIAM Studen’t Union made a pair of tickets available for you to win. MOVING WORLDS – MOVIE SCREENINGS
“Moving Worlds – Cinemas of Migration” is the topic of a series of Film Screenings, Discussions, Workshops from 22 May -10 July 2008, provided by the Instituto Cervantes Dublin and the Goethe-Institut Dublin. “Moving Worlds” is a film series on migration and integration. From May to November 2008 feature films and documentaries from Austria, France, Germany, Israel, Scotland, Spain, United Kingdom and USA will be screened weekly.
The film screenings will be complemented by discussions and workshops.
The first part of the series will run from 22 May until 10 July 2008 with a screening every Thursday evening at 18:00. Part two will take place from 2 October 2008 until 20 November 2008.
The third film will be screened on 05 June 2008 at 18:00 in the Instituto Cervantes, Lincoln House, Lincoln Place, Dublin 2. The film title is “Trouble Sleeping” (Dir: Robert Rae, UK 2008, 120 min).

DISABILITY AND INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT WEEK
From Thursday 05 June to Wed 11 June, the Disability and International Development Week is taking place at the Irish Aid Information and Volunteering Centre, 27-31 Upper O’Connell Street, Dublin 1. The Centre is open on Thursday from 09:30-20:00, Friday 10:00-17:00, Saturday 10:00-15:00, and 10:00-17:00 the following Monday to Wednesday.
The week is being organised by the DOCHAS Disability and International Development working group – a coalition of national and international NGOs working or interested in the field of disability and development. Working together with a shared mission and common objectives, the group aims to advance the debate around disability and development and to work towards the inclusion of disability as a key component of development planning, funding and delivery.
Member organisations include DOCHAS, Sightsavers International, The Centre for Global Health (CGH-TCD), Christian Blind Mission (CBM), International Service Ireland (ISI), Health Action Overseas (HAO), Comber Romanian Orphanage Appeal, Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO), the Disability Federation of Ireland (DFI), Center for International Rehabilitation (CIR), John Grooms, The Kimmage Development Studies Centre, DTalk and the International Disability Rights Monitor (IDRM).
What’s on during the DID week?
The week will consist of a photographic exhibition, workshops and video screenings that highlight critical issues that affect and address the challenges, needs and priorities of people with disabilities in developing countries. All activities are free of charge.
The week will be officially launched on Thursday 5th June by Maurice Manning, Chairman of the Irish Human Rights Commission, at 09:30 in the Irish Aid Centre on 27-31 Upper O’Connell Street.
Photographic Exhibition: The photographic exhibition will inform people about the reality of living with a disability in the developing world and will also show what people with disabilities can achieve if given legal frameworks, policies and the necessary support. The exhibition depicts progression from harsh realities to success stories and will cover topics ranging from inclusive education, social inclusion and exclusion to community rehabilitation, capacity building, emergencies and sustainable livelihoods. Photographs are provided by Irish NGOs that work with people with disabilities throughout the developing world.
Video screenings: A number of short clips and documentaries will be screened on the afternoon of Monday including a Documentary on the lives and aspirations of persons living with spinal cord injury in Nepal, Creature Discomforts (UK), amongst others.
Workshops: There will be 3 workshops during the DID week. On the opening day there will be a presentation and Q&A by Christian Blind Mission (CBM) highlighting practical ways to integrate disability in development planning. On Friday 6th, a panel discussion led by International Service Ireland (ISI) will take place in Trinity College Dublin on Making Development Inclusive. On Tuesday 10th, John Grooms, the Disability Federation of Ireland (DFI) and Spinal Injuries Ireland will demonstrate and further explore ways that Irish organisations can strengthen links with partners in developing countries through effective networking and collaboration.
