Dublin Event Guide

Hi all!

Last week was filled with slightly annoying battles with the spam classification of this Event Guide. The popularity is growing and so is the probability of spam filters to stop it. For this reason I will repeat again what I explained last week: If around lunchtime on a Friday you still haven’t received the Event Guide, please check your Spam-Folder and if you find the Event Guide in there, make sure that you tag it as “NO Spam”. In the unlikely ;-) event that you don’t want to receive this mail any more, PLEASE don’t tag it as Spam or Junk, but just drop me a mail with “Unsubscribe” in the Subject line or the body of the mail. If you tag it as Spam or Junk, your service provider might declare all mails coming from me (even to other people who still want it) as Spam. Thanks for your help! Once the mails leave me, I have no way of controlling if they arrive or not, so feel free to let me know if things go well but even more so if there are problems.

Maybe it would be great if we each wore some kind of pin badge so that we’d recognise each other and be able to talk to each other.” Let me know what you think about that idea! Thinks like that always cost money as well, but if enough people are interested, maybe we can sort something out.

ELVIS CONCERT
There is still another chance to enter the competition for tickets to the concert organised by the Elvis Social Club during which you will be able to see myself and about 20 others on stage.
From Fri 02 May-Sun 04 May, the Elvis Social Club is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Elvis’ 68 Special, one of the first “unplugged” TV concerts and one of Elvis Presley’s most important gigs because it was the start of his comeback in 1968.
The Elvis Social Club has an interesting programme put together and as part of this programme we will perform twice. Kevin Doyle, The Way it Was Orchestra and the Graceland Gospel Choir will perform “Elvis – If I Can Dream” on Friday 02 May and on Sunday 04 May in the Red Cow Complex on the Naas Road (near the Luas Line). Both evenings will start at 19:00 and tickets are EUR 30.

Performing with us is Ray Walker from Nashville who is and was a member of The Jordanaires and who sang with Elvis for 13 years. Ray was in Ireland before and performed with us last year in the Olympia in front of 800 people. He is great guy, an amazing singer, the same age as Elvis (73!) and full of hugely interesting stories.. In addition Jerry Schilling, a close friend of Elvis’ for 20 years and the former manager of The Beach Boys and Jerry Lee Lewis will be part of the event.

FESTIVAL OF PERCUSSION
“but what about the noise of crumpling paper…” is the title of the Festival of Percussion in Liberty Hall (Eden Quay) on Sat 26 April. Chris Stynes who is involved with the Royal Irish Academy of Music Rush Hour Recitals (great free events organised by the students of the academy) told me about this event and in the end managed to get two pairs of tickets for the event. Unfortunately it was a little late for last week’s Event Guide and with the event taking place already on Saturday any kind of competition would have been tight for this week, but then I dropped the ball and forgot to get back to Chris. So, unfortunately we won’t do a competition on this, BUT because Chris has put so much work in and because I messed it up in the end, I decided to include this non-free event anyway. It certainly does sound interesting!
The events during the festival are
– Latin Percussion Workshop with Fernando Hashimoto (Brazil) and Roberto Oliviera (Spain), 11:00-12:00, 6 Euro
– Jazz Impov for Drum Set Masterclass with Brian Wilson (New York), 12:00-13:00, 6 Euro
– 17:00-18:00 and 20:00-22:00 Concerts of contrasting programs featuring Lehman College Percussion Ensemble, Directed by Morris Lang (New York Philharmonic) and Royal Irish Academy of Music Percussion Ensemble, Directed by Richard O Donnell (RTE National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland), 9 Euro per concert, 6 Euro for Students and OAP.
The concert programme includes:
- “Ionisation” by Varese (for 13 Solo Percussionists), which is the piece that famously inspired Frank Zappa to pursue a career in music.
-”Third Construction in Metal” By John Adams
plus music from young Irish composer Aengus Ó Maoláin and upcoming English composer James Else.

CHESTER BEATTY LIBRARY – FILM SCREENING
The Chester Beatty Library at the back of Dublin Castle (www.cbl.ie) is one of Dublin’s great museums (and a library!). Admission is free and in addition to great exhibitions on show, there are regularly many free events. Rie Mishima is part of the Dublin Event Guide community, does work in the library and she will keep us informed about their events from now on. This week the information comes with a very short notice, but maybe some of you will be able to make this: On Fri 25 April at 13:00 Dr Benoy Behl will present a short talk followed by the film “The Dance of Shiva, temples and sculptures of the Chola period (c.10 century AD) of Tamil Nadu, in South India”.

POLISH STRONGHOLDS – EXHIBITION
The Paul Kane Gallery (6 Merrion Square) is showing “Polish Strongholds” an exhibition of new works by Matthew O’Kane from Friday 25 April until Saturday 17 May. Gallery opening hours are Tues to Fri, 11:00 to 18:00, Saturday 12:00 to 17:00. The gallery is closed Sunday+Monday.
Since his experiences as an Erasmus exchange student in Krakow, Poland, Matthew O’Kane he has become interested in recording the situational aspects of travel and home through the media of Video, Charcoal drawings and painting.

ED CHAPLIN – EXHIBITION
New York based visual artist Ed Chaplin makes his Irish debut at thisisnotashop with a selection of drawings from a lifetime of work. Born in 1932, Chaplin has pursued a life in art and architecture outside the traditional gallery system. His meditative drawings combine blurred geometry and multiplex colours to form an exploration of total abstraction. Thisisnotashop is an alternative not for profit gallery space in 26 Benburb Street, Dublin 7. The exhibition is on show from 25 – 27 April only, so you have to be fast if you want to see it. Opening hours are 14:00 – 19:00

SONNY CONDELL – PHOTOGRAPH ON CANVAS
The Alliance Française in 1 Kildare Street, Dublin 2 is showing “Photograph on Canvas” by Sonny Condell from 22 April – 27 May 2008. Sonny Condell, founder member of the famous musical innovators, Tir na nOg and Scullion is perhaps better known as a performer and songwriter, than that of a graphic artist. However this new exhibition of his digital photographic collages will be his fourth in as many years. The work comprises a montage of digital photography, drawing and painting.
The official opening is on 01 May at 18:00. Yes, it is a little unusual to have the official opening a week after the exhibition is on show. BLOCK PARTY – DANCE PERFORMANCE
As part of the Dublin Dance Festival, Dance Theatre of Ireland will be performing in Grand Canal Square (on the south side of the Liffey, between Sir John Rogerson’s Quay and Pearse Street) on April 25+26 (Fri and Sat) at 12:00 and 13:00. The performance lasts 30 minutes and is an outdoor event. Tickets are not required and the event is free.
“Roving dancers and musicians, flying blocks, vanishing structures, instant architecture – it’s a BLOCK PARTY! This colourful outdoor spectacle unfolds at Grand Canal Dock – a movable feast for the eyes and senses, for the adult and the child (in you). Merging the worlds of dance, music and architecture, BLOCK PARTY will immerse you in a vibrant world of colour and play. Set to explosive percussion by Robbie Harris and Friends, Dance Theatre of Ireland perform within a design more clever than a Rubik’s cube on pointe.”

AIRFIELD HOUSE – EXHIBITION
Have you ever heard of Airfield in Dundrum? It is an old 35 acre estate/farm in the middle of greater Dublin, just off Upper Kilmacud Road between Dundrum and Stillorgan. (Balally is the nearest Luas stop). Airfield (www.airfield.ie) describes ” Enjoy the changing seasons as you walk around the old estate, taking in the wonderful selection of farm animals, our ornamental walled garden and the car museum which houses Letitia’s 1927 Rolls Royce, Naomi’s 1936 Austin Tickford and Lily’s 1920′s Peugeot.”
The sisters Letitia and Naomi Overend mentioned here were the last members of the Overened family who owned Airfield and an exhibition about them is on show until 04 May with the title “Letitia and Naomi: Independent Spirits”. The description says: “It is thanks to the generosity of Letitia and Naomi that we can enjoy the wonderful estate that is Airfield. They were strong independent women that were way ahead of their times, travelling internationally, giving huge amounts of time to various charitable organisations, and tending the gardens and farm at Airfield. Their records from their lives give us a unique insight into life from 1800’s up to the 1970’s. This exhibition takes photographs and information from our archives and brings to life the interesting lives of the Overend family and their contribution to our society.”
Unfortunately hardly any events at Airfield are free, but the exhibition is “free to the public”. Opening hours are Tues-Sat 10:00-17:00, Sun 11:00-17:00

BRENDAN KEELEY AND PAUL SKELTON – CONCERT
The Gasworks Bar (former Kitty O’Shea’s) is continuing their Friday’s of live music.
Tonight (Fri) Brendan Keeley and Paul Skelton will perform in The Gasworks at 22:00. (The Gasworks Bar, Upper Grand Canal Street, Dublin 4 on 01 230 9628). www.brendankeeley.com. Paul Skelton probably has a similar website, but unfortunately I couldn’t find it.

TAIZE PRAYER
Many of you have probably heard of the Taize Community, an ecumenical Christian monastic community in France. Because it reaches across all Christian religions and due to its international nature it is well known and seems quite popular.

PIPEWORKS ORGAN MARATHON
Michael Quinn told me about a fund-raising event organised by Pipeworks (formerly Dublin International Organ & Choral Festival) in Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday 26th April, from 10:00 to 16:00. Admission is free; tea and coffee will be available in the crypt. A team of organists will be playing short 15-minute programmes in succession during this time (Michael is playing at 10:30). Each player has arranged sponsors for their programme, so for you it is free, but I am sure if you want to contribute, your offer won’t be rejected. The event is to support the Pipeworks festival, which will be taking place 20-29 June in a number of venues in Dublin, Kilkenny and Dundalk. The Marathon day on 26th April will conclude with a recital (admission EUR 10/EUR8) at 18:00, given by Irish organist Simon Harden (who’s currently based in Germany). He has won a number of prizes, including the Alkmaar organ competition, The Netherlands. Anybody who comes along to listen to some of the Marathon is as well welcome to become a Friend of Pipeworks Festival – details will be available at a stand in the Cathedral. Michael also pointed out that if anybody with corporate connections is interested in becoming a sponsor of Pipeworks they can contact him via mppquinn [AT] eircom.net. Any support is very welcome.

The Science Gallery in the Naughton Building at the back of Trinity College (near Pearse Street DART Station) is opening with a new exhibition this weekend: “Shirts that send hugs from a loved one, spray-on dresses and semi-living clothes. This is not a scene from a science fiction movie, but from the new exhibition TechnoThreads, starting this Saturday, 26th April. TechnoThreads is all about the creative sparks that fly when the worlds of fashion and science collide. The exhibition, running from 26th April – 26th July 2008, offers you a glimpse into the future of fashion in a world where Biotech and Nanotech are combined with traditional craft and Haute Couture skills. Technothreads is more than an exhibition. You can take part in a range of thought-provoking workshops, talks and debates, and watch films. FURRY MAMMALS – FAMILY PROGRAM, NATIONAL GALLERY
The National Gallery offers a regular Saturday Family Program. This Sat 26April from 15:00-16:00 the theme is “Furry Mammals”. The programme is free and is suitable for children from 4 -10 working together with the accompanying adult. VIKINGS – NATIONAL MUSEUM FAMILY EVENT
The National Museum of Ireland – Archaeology & History in Kildare Street in Dublin 2 is running a Family Event on Sat 26 April for all ages from 11:00-12:00 with the title “Vikings”. “Get your hands on Viking artefacts. Come and discover our Viking collection and then handle artefacts from the Viking chest.” Admission is free.

SUNDAY AT NOON – CLASSICAL MUSIC AT HUGH LANE
The Hugh Lane Gallery is continuing their Sunday at Noon series concerts. This week Concorde, the contemporary music ensemble, will perform “European Connections: Ireland/Slovenia (Part I)”. The concert in the Hugh Lane Gallery (Parnell Square North) starts at 12:00 and goes on for one hour. Admission is free. www.concorde.ie

SPEAKERS SQUARE
I have never experienced it and I need you to tell me if it is still on: In 2004 the Speaker’s Square project was launched and I read that every Sunday from 14:00-18:00 “ranters, ravers, poets and debaters” are still welcome to speak up on Temple Bar Square. The website speakerssquare.org is unfortunately defunct and I have never seen anybody there ranting and raving (apart from drunks on a Saturday night), but I have a flyer in front of me that I picked up just last week in the Temple Bar Information Centre! So is it still taking place or not? Does anybody know?

IRISH JEWISH MUSEUM
It might surprise you, but Ireland had a vibrant and active Jewish community in the area around Portobello and there is still a Jewish bakery (“Bretzel”) there that bakes kosher food. The Jewish community is in decline since the 1950s, but the “Irish Jewish Museum and Heritage Centre” in 3 Walworth Road (off Victoria Street), near South Circular Road in Dublin 8 is telling their history. Admission to the museum is free (donations are accepted) and opening times are until 30 April on Sundays 10:30-14:00 and from 01 May-30 Sept on Sun, Tues+Thurs from 11:00-15:30. If you have a bit of time on a Sunday, have a look at this historic aspect of Dublin.

CHILDHOOD OBESITY – TALK
The Royal College of Physicians is inviting to a free talk “Childhood Obesity-A Sizeable Problem”. The sixth in the RCPI Public Meeting Series ‘Promoting a Healthy Nation’ takes place on Tues 29 April at RCPI, No. 6 Kildare Street, Dublin 2, at 18:00-20:00. “Chaired by Ray D’Arcy, the meeting will address important issues concerning the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity and discuss the roles of physical activity and nutrition. With families and health services working together we hope to have Ireland leading the way in the fight against this sizeable problem.

DUBLIN ART AND TECHNOLOGY ASSOC – MEETING
The Dublin Art and Technology Association (D.A.T.A) is inviting to “DATA:EVENT:30 – Special 30th Event Anniversary” in the Science Gallery at the back of TCD on Tues 29 April at 20:00. DATA was formed in March 2002 with the intention of promoting, exploring, discussing, and exhibiting art and technology in Ireland and the world. Based in Dublin, DATA is built on the idea that collaboration between artists, musicians, technologists, and academia is the key element in creating a cultural environment for the dialogue and conception of technological art practices.
Speakers at the next event are Alessandro Ludovico (Italia), a media critic and the editor in chief of the magazine Neural, Jaime Villarreal (Mexico), an artist, technologist and researcher whose work explores the use of emerging technologies and electronic media as tools for creative expression, and Ivan Twohig (Ireland), an artist and student of the NCAD.

BECKETT BEFORE BECKETT – BOOK LAUNCH
A book launch is taking place in the Alliance Française in 1 Kildare Street, Dublin 2 on Wed 30 April at 18:00. “Samuel Beckett taught French literature in Trinity College, Dublin, in 1930-31. Among the relatively rare documents relating to these lectures, the most complete are contained in the notebook left to Trinity College in 1977 by one of Beckett’s students, Rachel Burrows.
This document, which has never been published before, nor even studied in full, represents the main focus of Beckett before Beckett. Its contents allow us to better understand Beckett’s ideas about literature. Brigitte Le Juez’s study of Rachel Burrows’ notes explores the early articulations of artistic principles that would inform the work of one of the greatest writers. Brigitte Le Juez is Head of the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies in DCU. Dr Phyllis Gaffney, School of Languages and Literatures UCD, will launch the book.”

ZODIAC SESSIONS
A regular event, that deserves to be mentioned again: Every Wednesday Bruxelles in Harry Street (just off Grafton Street near the Westbury Hotel) has an Open Mic Session called “The Zodiac Session”. Eight or so musicians go up, play a few tunes and express their musical talents. The event starts at 20:30 and finishes at about 01:00 and admission is free. Closer to the Wednesday the band list is usually on www.thezodiacsessions.com. The line up has a nice mix, so there should be something for everyone.

START YOUR OWN BUSINESS – LECTURES
The Start Your Own Business! series of free lectures called “ILAC Library Talks” in the Central Library, Ilac Centre, Henry Street, Dublin 1 is continuing. The lectures take place between 18:30 and 19:45 and admission is free, but booking is essential. SPANISH FILM SCREENING – EL ANGEL EXTERMINADOR
The Instituto Cervantes (Spanish Cultural Institute) will show the Mexican film “El Angel Exterminador” on Wed 30 Apr at 18:30. The film screening is free and the film will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles.

PARENT AND TODDLER WORKSHOP – NCH
The National Concert Hall does offer Parent & Toddler Workshops. These workshops are not free, but since I know that a good few of you currently have or will soon have children that are either in the right age group or are getting there faster than you think, I mention this one again and despite the price. I think it is a great idea to teach a child languages and music etc from an early age and the National Concert Hall is helping with these workshops for children of 6 months to 3 years: www.nch.ie/Learn—Explore/Parent-and-Toddlers.aspx

Hi all!

I had a good, busy weekend and I hope – with or without the help of this Event Guide – you had a great time as well. :-) I helped training Krav Maga (a self-defense type) to a big group of people and will tell you more about that hobby of mine next week or so. In addition I was at the Messiah on the Street performance in Fishamble Street on Sunday and while the weather gods were not hugely co-operative, it was a very interesting event. – Did any of you go to the Budrising event in the Docklands? If you did, I am keen to find out more about it, especially about the venue.

A little problem hit me this week, not really bad news, but maybe you can help with it. I haven’t found a good solution to solve it yet. Since January, when I started the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” group on facebook, loads of you found out about this Event Guide via facebook and joined the Event Guide community. There was always a discrepancy between the facebook members and the people on the distribution list. More people join the facebook group than subscribe to this weekly newsletter and the consequence is that many of the facebook group members don’t ever get to see this e-mail. In the past I did send a few reminder mails to the whole facebook group and every time after sending such a mail, I “woke up” at least 30-40 people who then subscribed to the e-mail. Since last weekend, the facebook group has grown to more than 1200 members and while this is a good thing. Facebook doesn’t allow any group mails in groups with more than 1200 members. So, that means that I can’t “wake up” non subscribing group members (at least 300!!) anymore. Now, where can you help with that? If you talk to family, friends and colleagues and the topic of the Event Guide comes up, tell them that they HAVE to send a mail to me (dublineventguide@gmail.com) to be added to the list. Joining the facebook group is not sufficient.

And two more little notes: Last week I was informed by one of our Community Members that the Event Guide in his Gmail Inbox was flagged as “spam”. This seems to be the first time that happened, but it means that you might have to watch out for it. If one week you didn’t receive the Event Guide by mid morning on a Friday, check your Spam-Folder and if you find the Event Guide in there, make sure that you tag it as “NOT Spam”. Oh and if any of you don’t want to receive it any more, PLEASE don’t tag it as Spam or Junk, but just drop me a mail with “Unsubscribe” in the Subject line or the body of the mail. If you tag it as Spam or Junk, your service provider might declare all mails coming from me (even to other people who still want it) as Spam.

And the final “organisational” message before we come to a LONG list of events this week: You might remember that I mentioned recently that I am looking for ideas for sponsorship and for raising some funds to cover the cost of this Event Guide. I got a number of interesting ideas and am working on some of them. One suggestion was that I would look for an easy way so that you can contribute a bit IF YOU WANT. Most of you know by now that I sing in the backing choir of the best ;-) Elvis Tribute Band and that we recently filled the National Concert Hall. For our next concerts I was able to get free tickets for a competition and after talking to John Kavanagh from the Elvis Social Club again during the week when I asked him for which day the free tickets were for, he was so kind to add another pair of tickets. The Elvis Social Club has an interesting programme put together and as part of this programme we will perform twice. Kevin Doyle, The Way it Was Orchestra and the Graceland Gospel Choir will perform “Elvis – If I Can Dream” on Friday 02 May and on Sunday 04 May in the Red Cow Complex on the Naas Road (on the Luas Line). Both evenings will start at 19:00 and tickets are EUR 30.
This weekend Elvis Charity Spectacular will benefit “Cinemagic – World Screen Festival for Young People”. Cinemagic is a Belfast charity that embraces the magic of film, television and digital technologies to educate, motivate and inspire young people through the medium of workshops. Cinemagic caters for young people (from 4 to 25) with just about every level of interest in film – whether they want to watch and enjoy, create their own work or take things one stage further and find out more about a possible career in the film or television industry. The Cinemagic – World Screen Festival is taking place from the 23 April in Dublin.
As I said last week: If you thought that an Elvis Tribute Concert with a brilliant Elvis performer and an amazing band and choir is already a good thing, it gets better! Performing with us is Ray Walker from Nashville who is and was a member of The Jordanaires and who sang with Elvis for 13 years. Ray is a lovely guy, the same age as Elvis, full of hugely interesting stories and a great singer. In addition Jerry Schilling, a close friend of Elvis’ for 20 years and the former manager of The Beach Boys and Jerry Lee Lewis will be part of the event.
So it promises to be an unforgettable event and you can be part of it. MANDSCAPE – EXHIBITION
The Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray is showing “Mandscape” from 11 April – 10 May. Mandscape is an exhibition of landscapes where mankind is present, or where mankind has left a trace. Curated by Martin Drury, founding director of The Ark, A Cultural Centre for Children, from The Ark’s visual art collection, this exhibition offers children and their families an opportunity to form and explore ideas about urban and rural landscapes through art of different media.
Mandscape features works by contemporary artists Brian Bourke, Oliver Comerford, Daniel de Chenu, Michael Durand, Martin Gale, Joy Gerrard, Nickie Hayden, Clare Langan, Brendan Neiland and Barbara Rae.
The exhibition is free, but the workshop for children on 10 May does cost EUR 8: Children can take part in the Mandscape Drawing Workshop with artist Liz Smith on Saturday 10 May at 14:30. Children aged 10 and upwards will be given the chance to use their local environment as a catalyst to designing a futuristic building that will continue to grow and change. The workshop will develop skills in observation, perspective and spatial awareness, through drawing. The workshop will take place in the Mermaid gallery and encourages children to respond to the exhibition.

TEMPLE BAR GALLERY – GERRARD EXHIBITION
The Temple Bar Gallery shows a joint exhibition of siblings John Gerrard and Joy Gerrard from 11 April – 24 May. Gallery Opening Hours: Tuesday to Saturday: 11:00-18:00, Thursday: 11:00-19:00. FROZEN IN TIME – PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
Frozen in Time, Photographs of Dance is a world-wide touring exhibition presented by the Goethe-Institut in collaboration with Dublin Dance Festival and DanceHouse. This stunning exhibition features a series of images that set out to preserve the fleeting fragments of movement that become lost amidst a sequence of dance, offering a unique opportunity to view dance devoid of motion. Frozen in Time includes work by Peter Welz, Gert Weigelt and features images of The Forsythe Company, who are performing in this year’s festival. Frozen in Time is on show from 01 April – 20 April in the Dance House, Foley Street, Dublin 1. Admission is free and the opening hours are Mon-Thurs 10:00 – 22:00, Fri+Sat: 10:00 – 18:00, Son 12:00-17:00.

I am not sure if the organisers wanted to keep the festival local and therefore didn’t tell anybody or if they just didn’t know who to tell. In the context of the Franco Irish Literary Festival, the Alliance Francaise is instigating a Bookcrossing: “Everyone knows the feeling, when you close a book that you liked, which affected you, to want to share it with someone else. Since the minstrels of the Middle Ages to today’s city dwellers, books have been shared and travel at the whim of their owner. Bookcrossing offers a simple way to share books with strangers, and follow their trail. Bookcrossing began in April 2001 in the United States. It now has just over 350,000 members in more than 90 countries. This treasure hunt of a new sort consists of leaving a book with an identifier in the open enabling its journey to be tracked as it is found, then left down again in a different place. An Internet site, bookcrossing.com, acts as a base for records and follow up. To date, over 2 million books have been left and recorded.
There are three simple rules:

WORLDVIEW FILM CLUB – SCREENINGS
Like with regular live events in pubs, I won’t list these film screenings every week, but I will mention them every now and then only. However, this week I received a mail with the new website address for the The Worldview Film Club and so I will mention it again this week. As I had explained last week, the film club is a project by a group of young Bahá’ís that believe that arts can advance the affairs of mankind. The presentation of the movies is followed by discussion on various topics by the participants.
The movies are presented in the National Bahá’í Centre in Dublin in 24 Burlington Road, Dublin 4 (near the former Burlington Hotel) and all screenings are free of charge. Worldview Club events are on every Friday starting at 18:50. The next event is today (Fri 18 April). The theme is “Faith” and the film shown is the 1976 film with Anthony Quinn “The Message – The story of Islam”. IRISH TIMES: PAST AND PRESENT – BOOK LAUNCH
“The Irish Times: Past and Present” is a new book by John Martin and it will be launched on Fri 18 April at 19:30 in Liberty Hall. The main speaker at the launch is Conor Lenihan T.D., Junior Minister for Integration.
The book description says: “This book is a comprehensive review of the history of The Irish Times since its foundation in 1859, drawing on archival records, interviews and other primary sources – including the British Public Record Office. It covers the early development of the newspaper as the organ of Anglo-Ireland, and examines the positions it adopted throughout the turbulent century and a half that followed. It reveals for the first time the strange legal and financial structures of the newspaper and examines conflicts involving some of its leading personalities.”

WORLD HERITAGE DAY – FORUM
The Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Trinity College Dublin will mark ‘World Heritage Day’, Friday, 18 April 2008, with a World Heritage forum.
The event will take place in the Swift Theatre from 16:00-18:00 and admission is free. ICOMOS – The International Council on Monuments and Sites, is hosting this International Day for Monuments and Sites 2008. The theme for this year is “Religious Heritage and Sacred Places” – which is particularly appropriate for the Hill of Tara. The purpose of the TCD event is to launch a fresh international appeal, calling on ICOMOS International to insist that the M3 motorway be rerouted away from the Hill of Tara complex, before it is nominated to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Legal issues relating to the M3 motorway at Tara will be outlined by Frank Callanan, SC, at the World Heritage Day forum, Trinity College Dublin (TCD), on Friday 18th April.
Speakers at the TCD event will include:

ZIMBABWE INDEPENDENCE DAY – AMNESTY CELEBRATION
Amnesty International, Trócaire, Christian Aid and the Association of European Parliamentarians for Africa have come together in organizing an ecumenical prayer service for peace and justice in Zimbabwe. The service will be followed by an event to mark Zimbabwean independence with food, music and guest speakers, including from the Zimbabwean community in Ireland. Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin the Most Revd Dr John Neill will officiate at the service. Barry Andrews TD will be speaking at the Independence Day celebration along with other guest speakers

VISIT2008 – VISIT ARTS STUDIOS
Have you ever wondered what an artist’s studio looks like? Are you curious to find out? On Saturday & Sunday 19th & 20th April, fifteen artists’ studio organisations in Dublin will open their doors and invite you to visit their workplaces. Over 150 visual artists are participating in VISIT 2008. Offering a snapshot of artists working across a wide range of media including printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture, glassmaking, ceramics, video, film, photography, installation and conceptual art, VISIT 2008 celebrates the vibrancy of Dublin’s visual art scene. Throughout the city, artists’ studios are dotted and clustered in unusual settings: faded Georgian buildings, renovated stables, urban warehouses, an old mill, a hidden gem above a car salesroom, dormant council flats, an old firestation and a state of the art studio complex.
There are six studios open on Saturday 19 April. The studios are Black Church Print Studio (4 Temple Bar, 12:00-17:00), Broadstone Studios (36-40 Upper Dominick Street, 11:00-18:00), CommonPlace Studios (10 Burgh Quay, 11:00-18:00), Independent Studio Artists (11&16 Eustace Street, 14:00-18:00), The Market Studios (Corner Halston Street & Mary’s Lane, 12:00-18:00) and Temple Bar Gallery & Studios (5-9 Temple Bar, 12:00-18:00). All studios are located within a reasonable walking distance. And you can visit them individually or you can take part in one of two walking tours departing from Temple Bar Gallery at 14:00 and 15:00.

Again you can visit the studios individually but in addition there will be a full bus tour which will bring you to the venues. The free bus (first come first serve!) will leave at 13:00 at 59 Upper O’Connell Street and will bring you back to there at the end of the tour. It is a great opportunity to look behind the scenes of the Dublin artists world, if arts is your thing, you should at least visit some of the studios!

On the Global Day of Action to Ban Cluster Bombs on Saturday 19 April, people all over the world will be taking action in support of a ban on cluster bombs. Cluster bombs have killed and injured thousands of civilians during the last 40 years and continue to do so today. NEW NOISE – NEW MUSIC CONCERT
This event is stretching the “in the Greater Dublin area” concept for events in this Event Guide a little, but since there are some readers of the Event Guide who live in that area and who are very much interested in music AND because the nice people from the Royal Irish Academy of Music are involved, I will mention it.
The Contemporary Music Centre presents a marathon of new music by student composers from around Ireland at Riverstown Hall, NUI Maynooth, Kildare, 14:00-18:00, Sat 19 April. A number of performances of new music by student composers, programmed by Dr Martin O’Leary, composer and music lecturer at NUI Maynooth, will take place throughout the day.
Composition and performance students from University College Cork (UCC,) Trinity College Dublin (TCD), University of Limerick (UL), Queen’s University Belfast (QUB), Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT), Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) and the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) are all participating.
The programme for the day promises to be a diverse assortment of new instrumental, electro-acoustic and electronic music. There will also be an opportunity for discussion and interaction throughout the day. The forum provides students with a valuable opportunity to have their work performed, as well as the chance to meet their peers and discover the trends in new music in different institutions around the country.

Monkey Music is a training concept (and a company) that introduces music to very young children in a way they can easily understand and enjoy. The company was founded in London in 1993 by Angie Davies, who developed the classes for her first newborn baby daughter. As a trained classical musician and experienced teacher, Angie was aware that all babies have an innate love of music and as a keen new mum she looked for local music classes to attend. Finding a lack of classes in the appropriate age group, she decided to write an original music curriculum that was fun and interactive for everyone!

The Hugh Lane Gallery is continuing their Sunday at Noon series of Classical Concerts. This week the Seoirse Bodley (piano) will perform his song cycles to the poetry of Micheal O’Siadhail with Sylvia O’Brien (soprano). The concert in the Hugh Lane Gallery (Parnell Square North) starts at 12:00 and goes on for one hour. Admission is free.

BAROCK – MASTERCLASS
A workshop from 17-21 April about “Masters of the German Baroque” culminates in a Master Class on Sun 20 April from 14:30 at the Goethe Institut (37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2) and a Concert on Mon 21 April from 19:30 in the Katherine Brennan Hall, Royal Irish Academy of Music (Westland Row, Dublin 2). TRIATHLON – TRAINING & INFORMATION
Triathlon Ireland is organising a training event on Sun 20 April for all new tri-athletes. What will be trained is the transition between the disciplines and if you are new to Triathlons or if you would like to train for triathlons, but were always puzzled about the transition have a look or participate on Sunday. It is a “Coached cycle / run / transition training” in Furze Road, Phoenix Park. The training is free. From 09:00-10:30 roads in Phoenix Park will be closed. 08:30 registration for 09:00 start – 10:30.

ASTRONOMY – LECTURE
The Irish Astronomy Society (www.irishastrosoc.org) is inviting to the lecture “Carbon Stars: Cool Stellar Dudes” by Tony O’Hanlon (S.A.C.). The lecture takes place on Mon 21 April from 20:00 in the Dunsink Observatory in Castleknock. All are welcome and admission is free. HOW CAN I TAKE CARE OF THE EARTH – SLI EILE DEBATE
The Jesuit Youth Organisation Slí Eile is running their 7th Slí Eile Debate on Tues 22 April from 19:30-21:30 in the Sli Eile building (20 Upper Gardiner Street). The topic is “How can I take care of the Earth? and the guest speaker is Catherine Devitt. Catherine is a social scientist and recently participated in the ten week residential programme on ecology in the Dominican Ecology Centre in Wicklow. She was also in Korea in July 2004 to represent Ireland at a UNESCO/IYHF Peace Festival in Seoul, where issues such as sustainable development, conflict resolution, human rights, impact of climate change, as well as visiting the Demilitarized Zone at the North/South Border were covered.
Fernando Galligo who organises these Sli Eile debates explains the topic further: “We must care about environmental and climate issues because we are called to love our neighbors and to protect and care for the “least of these”. The consequences of these problems will most likely hit the poor the hardest, in part because those areas likely to be significantly affected are in the world’s poorest regions. Poor nations and individuals have fewer resources available to cope with major challenges and threats. Therefore, we should work to provide for the orphaned, the needy and the helpless through proper stewardship.”

CINEMAGIC – FILM FESTIVAL
The Cinemagic World Screen Festival for Young People is starting on 23 April and will run until 01 May. Cinemagic is Film Festival for children and young people that use the magic of film, television and all forms of moving image to entertain, educate and inspire. The festival caters for all young people (aged between 4 and 25) with any range of film and television interest – whether they want to watch and enjoy, create their own work or take things a stage further and find out more about a possible career in the film or television industries. This years festival is taking place in a number of venues in Dublin. In addition to film screenings (not free), there are a number of workshops for young people to the age of 18 and others to the age of 25 and it might be something for you if you are in the lucky position to be young enough or maybe there is a movie and cinema fan in your family that would enjoy it. Because there are only a few free workshops and because the majority of the Dublin Event Guide Community has matured already too much, I won’t list individual events. :-) But here you can find all the details www.cinemagic.org.uk/

PHILOSOPHIES OF EAST AND WEST – INTRODUCTORY TALK
New Acropolis (www.newacropolis-ireland.org) was founded in 1957. Since then, its aim is to help people by providing them the best kind of philosophical education – one that is adaptable, independent and unrestricted by any religions, political or socio-economic influences. In April they are starting a new course “Foundation Course in the Philosophies of East and West”. The course is an introduction to the main currents of thoughts from the East and West, discovering the relevance of these traditional teachings today. Wednesday 23rd & Thursday 24th April at 19:30, Saturday 26th April at 11.30. The full course costs EUR 160, though.

WHAT’S A PLAY FOR? – ABBEY TALKS

CUBA 2008 – PHOTO EXHIBITION
“Series 1 Cuba 2008 – Images of the people” is the exhibition of photographs by Dublin Photographer Patrick Donald that will take place in the Monster Truck Gallery on Francis Street, Dublin from 24 April (Launch: 18:00-20:00) until 29 April. It is open daily from 13:00-19:00 and on Sunday from 13:00-16:00.
This collection of black and white photographs is social documentary of the Cuban people through the eyes of the photographer at this particular time just one month before Fidel Castro steps down having lead Cuba for almost 50 years. He focused on people on the street, going about their daily business. This is the first in a series of three exhibitions on Cuba. The next one is planned for 2018 and then the last one in 2028. Hmmmm, watch that space! The lectures are a primer that will whet the appetite of new entrepreneurs who want to go further and engage in training before setting up their own businesses.

TRIBUTE TO ANTONIO MACHADO – POETRY READING
April 23 is a symbolic date for world literature. On this date, in 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died. The World Book Day (also known as the International Day of the Book) is a yearly event on April 23, organised by UNESCO to promote reading and publishing. The Day was first celebrated in 1995. To commemorate this day the Instituto Cervantes is organising a recital and translation contest. Participants are Philip Johnston, Miguel Ángel, Miguel Julia Piera, Anastasio Sánchez. The event takes place in the Instituto Cervantes (Lincoln House, Lincoln Place) on 23 April at 18:30.

SPANISH FILM SCREENING – ANTONIO MACHADO
The Instituto Cervantes (Spanish Cultural Institute) will show the film “Antonio: Machado: A lomos de la Quimera” on Wed 24 Apr at 18:30. The film screening is free and the film will be shown in Spanish with NO English subtitles.
