Event Guide: Bray Air Display, Grand Canal Clean, Electric Picnic Job, Norway

August 30th, 2007

Hi All!

This is the 11th (!!!) edition of my Event Guide and I hope you still enjoy it. Past editions are on my “facebook” page, if you are interested.

Tomorrow the Temple Bar Diversions Festival that started in the beginning of June is coming to an end. For three months free events took place every weekend in Temple Bar. Street Theatre, Music, Circus, and Outdoor Cinema was provided for our enjoyment and I think they put together a great program again. We now have to wait until June next year for the next Temple Bar Diversions Festival, but the events in Temple Bar will continue and I will keep you informed.

The “Summer of Dublin” Festival is taking a break this week, but more events will take place next weekend.

If you are interested in Opera, check out www.dublinopera.com. The Dublin Opera Festival will run from this Sunday (2nd of September) until the 9th of September. Nearly all performances require tickets and the prices range from EUR 12 to EUR 75. But I mention it here, because in next weeks Event Guide I will tell you about a free Opera event.

You might remember that a few weeks ago the Bray Summer Fest was in full swing and one of the highlights on the last day was the Bray Airshow. Well, it was meant to be the Bray Airshow! Due to bad weather this show had to be canceled and will now take place this weekend. On Sunday from 3pm, the people in Bray will make another attempt. If you are interested in Air Shows and the display of “flying machines” check out www.braysummerfest.com/index.php?page=bray_air_display and www.brayairdisplay.com/

You are overcome by altruism and don’t know what to do about it? Well, you could help cleaning the banks of the Grand Canal! On Saturday at 10am (until 12am) the Second Spring (!!!) Clean of the Grand Canal will take place. Meeting point for all helpers is at the city side of Leeson Street Bridge and all equipment needed for the clean-up will be provided. DON’T ask me how I found out about this event! ;-)

Did you want to go to the Electric Picnic on Friday and don’t have a ticket? Maybe this is an idea for you: Marvellous Faces is looking for an assistant for this Friday to help out at Electric Picnic! The person is not required to face paint, but to come down and help
set-up, carry gear and provide cover for lunchtime and breaks. It pays €40 for the day and the rest of the time is totally theirs to enjoy the picnic! If you’re interested please email maria_markey@yahoo.com.

And finally a different type of event. It is not this week, but you need to book, so I am listing it already. A friend asked me to include it and as the event is free I will do so:

Hurtigruten is the Norwegian coastal voyage company and as part of their launch programme in Ireland they are hosting two FREE 1-hour long presentations on Thursday 27th September at 2pm and 7pm on their Antarctic and Norwegian holidays. It will take place in the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire.

At the presentations you can hear all about their ships (they are smaller than luxury cruise liners and more informal and relaxed) and the journeys on offer year round along the west coast of Norway. During the winter you get the Northern Lights voyages and in the summer it’s the Land of the Midnight Sun. There are plenty of shore-based excursions too (dog-sledding, snowmobiling, etc) as well as special voyages (i.e. Greenland & Spitsbergen for the polar bears, glaciers and ice hotels and even an Orca whale safari!).

They’ll also talk about their Antarctica trips which vary from 2 – 3 weeks and bring you to the places explored by Amudsen and Shackleton.

You will have to reserve a place if you want to attend and you can do this or request more information on www.hurtigruten.ie

Some weeks ago it looked as if the end of August would mean the end of the Event Guide for this year as the free events kind of die down! But, hey, this weeks Guide seems to be well filled with activities and wait for next weeks guide, it will be close to bursting point! ;-)

Enjoy the weekend!

–Joerg

Disclaimer: This Event Guide is sent to friends and colleagues of mine to let you know about (mainly free) events in the Greater Dublin Area. I started this because some friends asked me to share my weekend plans with them as I went to all types of festivals and searched for more. ;-) If you don’t want to receive this mail, just let me know. If you have feedback, good or bad, PLEASE tell me. BTW: I don’t get any reward from the organisers for advertising their events.
