Hi all!<\/p>\n

Last week I thought about the type of events I write about every week and when you look at a a cross section of just a bit more than one month, it is really impressive what Dublin has to offer. Let’s face it, Dublin is quite small. Yes it is a capital, but if we keep the famous comparison in mind that Dublin is about the size of Manchester, then Dublin is really tiny in relative terms.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, the city has a really great cultural and event life. Just a few weeks back we had the brilliant Culture Night where the City Centre was buzzing with life and activities and every body had a great time. Last week, we left the Culture aside and enjoyed the architecture of the City at Open House. Next week is Mathsweek and Innovation Dublin starts where another part of your intelligence is challenged and you can learn a HUGE amount of things in these next two weeks. After that we will enjoy the Bram Stoker Festival where literature is the focus. In addition (not free, but still interesting) the last two weeks the Theatre Festival took place and all is accompanied on a continual basis by lots of different sports events and all the music we have in Dublin. For children the Children’s Book Festival is taking place at the moment and then we will have Halloween.<\/p>\n

Could anybody really say that Dublin has nothing to offer?<\/p>\n

If you hear anybody saying that, tell them about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)! And get them to go to some of the events to sample the great offering. After Culture, Music and Art at Culture Night and Architecture at Open House, this week is the one where you can learn and expand your mind and maybe even challenge yourself a little. A HUGE amount of talks take place this week. Give it a go, try something that you might not do tooo often and go to a talk or lecture or seminar. Mathsweek ist taking place and Innovation Dublin<\/p>\n

If that is absolutely not your thing or if you need some retail therapy first, have a look at all the markets. The Exchange Market and the HaPenny Flea Market take place on Saturday and the Fusion World Culture Market on Sunday.<\/p>\n

At this two day workshop\/training course you will learn how create your presence online, be introduced to web design and social media tools and how to successfully use them. The Night Joe Dolans Car Broke Down – Olympia Theatre<\/h2>\n

Innovation Dublin<\/h2>\n

Innovation Dublin celebrates and showcases the Innovation and Crreativity that happens in Dublin. This is a very big umbrella! And consequently the the events are covering lots of aspects and areas of innovation. The Innovation Dublin week can appear a little daunting at first because you might think that only experts and specialists in their fields would be the ones understanding what is happening, but I suggest that you try few of the events and you will be surprised. Most things are a lot more interesting that we give them credit for, even the topics that initially sound complicated. Another interesting event that many wouldn’t consider as attractive initially is the Mathsweek this week. I had a look through the list of events. Many are for students or school kids, but the ones that are for the general public all sound as if you definitely don’t have to be a Maths genius to enjoy it. Science Gallery 2013 Programme Launch<\/h2>\n

Most of you know that I am a big fan of the Science Gallery at Trinity College. I have been at nearly all exhibitions (there are at least four exhibitions per year) and have enjoyed every single one of them. All exhibitions are free and the work the Science Gallery around director Michael John Gorman does is outstanding.<\/p>\n

Recently the Science Gallery added the Make Shop to their offering, a place where you can make, hack and create things for a very small fee and with Christmas coming up, you should have a look at the Science Gallery Shop, THE place to get science related quirky presents.<\/p>\n

During the week I was invited to the launch of the Science Gallery Programme for 2013 and I have great news! Four really promising exhibitions are planned with “Illusion” and “Living Machines” being the two I look most forward to. For the dedicated fans like me ;-), the Science Gallery has also a membership programme, which is EUR 30 per year, but if you are a student you can become a member for just EUR 5 per year at the moment. Starbucks or Bewley’s – Are you confused?<\/h2>\n
\n

Did you see the slight confusion caused by the Starbucks \/Bewley’s “merger” in Westmoreland Street? Where formerly Bewley’s was, not toooo long ago Starbucks moved in. (Oddly directly across another Starbuck on the other side of the street!) However, the building still has lots of Bewley’s signs and a Bewley’s mosaic on the ground and the Starbucks sign is just the round sign with the mermaid in the window. Bewley’s didn’t like that and wanted to remove all Bewley references including the mosaic on the ground, but they were stopped – at least for a little while – because the removal requires planning permission. \u2018CATHAIR\u2019 is more than a word, the poet Ceait\u00ed N\u00ed Bheildi\u00fain finds as she explores the connection between city and ancient sites in Ireland. Using a litany of place names, chanted by the singer R\u00f3n\u00e1n \u00d3 Snodaigh, and the controlled performance of Zoe U\u00ed Fhaol\u00e1in on screen, the poet\u2019s multimedia installation merges visual images with verse to question our sense of place, of time and of belonging.<\/p>\n

CATHAIR\u2019s main exhibition is installed in THE BACK LOFT, an exhibition space on St. Augustine St., just off Cornmarket, in Dublin city centre from 15-21 Oct (12:00-19:00).<\/p>\n

The Ferocious Mingle Market<\/h2>\n

The Ferocious Mingle Market takes place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Caf\u00e9 and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.<\/p>\n

The location of the new indoor market is 72 Thomas Street (between the Vicar St venue & Cafe Notto) an opening hours are 11:00-18:00. There is also a Caf\u00e9, the Oscar Verne Caf\u00e9, open for business at the market.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Orchestra takes its origin from an idea by Mario Tronco and documentary maker Agostino Ferrente. Tronco and Ferrente find in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II (also called Piazza Vittorio) an abundance of sounds and musicians from all over the world. In 2006, Agostino Ferrente premiered the documentary Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio (The Orchestra of Piazza Vittorio), which tells the story of this unusual music ensemble.<\/p>\n

The Director Agostino Ferrente will attend the screening of the documentary. It will be introduced by Prof. Paolo Minuto.<\/p>\n

Las Fallon joined the Dublin Fire Brigade in 1985 and is currently based in Dolphin\u2019s Barn Fire Station. He always had a strong

\nHe recently published a book titled \u2018Dublin Fire Brigade and the Irish Revolution\u2019. What emerges in this book is a picture of a strong republican influence among members of Dublin Fire Brigade at the time. The Codor Dojo is a brilliant event for children and teenagers to introduce them to programming (“Coding”). How late is still on time in Ireland?<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Thursday afternoon I (and approx. 10 other digital media people) was invited to discuss “Digital Dublin” with the current Lord Mayor of Dublin Naoise \u00d3 Muir\u00ed. I had some little challenges to make it there! Apart from my day job during Thursday, there was a problem with a website I look after that kept me awake until around 04:00 in the morning and on top of all that my car tyre had a puncture that needed to get repaired. A slightly chaotic day. And with all that I was hopelessly delayed.
\nThe starting time for the event was 15:00 and I rushed in the door at Mansion House at 15:20 to find an EMPTY room!! I couldn’t believe it. Yes, after soooo many years in Dublin I still get caught out. ;-) But what I don’t get is how people think that through! You get an invitation during the day for a business-like meeting with the mayor and 10 other people. How come everybody was late (including me) and nobody was too late. So, how late is still on time? The mind boggles!
\nSearching for an answer on Google (Where else!?) I find a bible story about Lazarus who had died before Jesus arrived and it says “Four days late and still on time”. Is that maybe where people in Ireland take their inspiration from? http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+11&version=NIV<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
