Hi all!<\/p>\n

12,000!!! Our Dublin Event Guide Community has grown to 12,000 people! I know, I shouldn’t be that surprised. ;-) But when I first sent a very short mail to 10 of my friends about one<\/span> event that took place on the following weekend, I had not anticipated that 5 years later I would still be writing mails about events and that these mails would reach more than 1,200 times that number of people. However, it is interesting how the perspective changes: Now I have a goal of 20,000 firmly in my sight. ;-) And I know we will reach it! I say “we” because without you it won’t happen. The reason that our community has grown to 12,000 is because you<\/span> like the Dublin Event Guide and then you tell your friends, family and colleagues about it. Without your recommendations, the number of readers wouldn’t be much higher than a few hundred. So, please keep telling everybody about the Dublin Event Guide. Your friends, family and colleagues will love you<\/span> for it!! :-)<\/p>\n

During the week Tanya B, alerted me to the fact that something was wrong with Gmail and because many of you use Gmail, here is the story: Google broke Gmail! On Monday or Tuesday the first problems were reported. Normally when you get the Dublin Event Guide, it is clipped and you have to click on “View entire message” to see the whole mail. Not the best solution, but it works and we get used to little issues like that. However from Tuesday the link “View entire message” started to disappear. This means that you will not be able to read the Dublin Event Guide past the Saturday. :-\/ Google is working on it, but they have no idea yet when it will be fixed. In the meantime I suggest you go to http:\/\/www.dublineventguide.com<\/a> where you will find the complete Dublin Event Guide. I will let you know on Facebook at http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DublinEventGuide<\/a> as soon as I hear something new about the issue.<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. Open House is the BIG event this weekend, around 100 buildings can be visited and you should check out the website or get a programme in the Toursit Office if you didn’t get it before. I will got to a number of buildings and will plan my weekend around that. In addition there is the last chance to go to the Oktoberfest for this year and the Pure Vitnage Fair is on again. On Sunday afternoon; I might also go to the Harvest Festival in the German Embassy<\/p>\n

Yes, there are another 120 other events, but I will probably not get a chance to go to anything else this weekend or during the week. Maybe the Milk & Cookies Stories is for you (on Tuesday). I never made it to it unfortunately, but I have ONLY heard good things about it! Alternatively the Dublintellectual event on the same night sounds interesting!<\/p>\n

Quieter week? Yes, after the Open House Sat+Sun, but that is not a bad thing either. And we all know that the next months will be a little quieter than the “summer” months. So it’s all ok! :-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Night Joe Dolans Car Broke Down<\/h2>\n

Imagine being stranded with the legendary Joe Dolan in a rural pub in Cavan on the night his car breaks down. That\u2019s just the sort of fantasy scenario that\u2019s imagined in \u201cThe Night Joe Dolan\u2019s Car Broke Down\u201d a new play written and directed by Padraic McIntyre.<\/p>\n

The play is set on a stormy St. Stephen\u2019s night as people gather to celebrate the 60th birthday party of the The Horse Munley. As the storm worsens and people head home, a knock to the door brings the night\u2019s entertainment to a new level. As the play unfolds so too does personal secrets, the music and the craic.<\/p>\n

What’s new and interesting in Dublin<\/h2>\n

There are a good few little pieces of news today, so I will summarise a few here instead of giving them all a separate section here.<\/p>\n

+ Little Museum offer free visits!
\nThe Little Museum of Dublin at 15 St Stephen’s Green will from now on offer free visits on Wednesdays from 13:00-18:00. This is courtesy of Johnston Mooney and O’Brien and is great news. The museum shows social, cultural and political history of modern 20th century Dublin with the help of more than 400 exhibits that were donated by the public. http:\/\/www.littlemuseum.ie\/<\/a><\/p>\n

+ Innovation Dublin
\nInnovation Dublin will take place again towards the end of the month, a really interesting programme of events is coming together and while a good few events are not free, there will be plenty of free events as well. Please check the Upcoming Events Section because for a good few events you need to request tickets and some will book out rapidly.<\/p>\n

+ Chaos Looms around Stephen’s Green!
\nWith the work for the new Luas interconnect beginning next year, the traffic plan for that part of the city has been revealed and it will change a HUGE amount. Dawson Street, for example will be completely blocked for cars and busses and Kildare Street will become a two-way street again. And if you have a car and sometimes bring it into the City Centre, forget it! If you have a shop and rely on customer that can come to you in the general Stephen’s Green area, then MOVE! + Chesterfield Avenue in Phoenix Park open again
\nChesterfield Avenue was closed for traffic from Friday evening until Sunday evening over the summer. From this weekend, the street will be open again until further notice. Children’s Book Festival<\/h2>\n

I will leave this notice up because I unfortuantely can’t check all the Children’s Book Events, there are too many! In addition the main age group of the Dublin Event Guide is not really the right target group for the Children’s Book Festival. So if you have kids, I hope you don’t mind checking through the events programme yourself. Thanks!<\/p>\n

The Children’s Book Festival will take place from 01-31 October. Throughout the whole month, activities will be running in libraries, schools and arts centres. From readings by popular authors, to writing and illustration workshops, plus storytelling, quizzes and competitions \u2013 there will be countless opportunities to enjoy children’s books. http:\/\/www.childrensbooksireland.ie<\/a><\/p>\n

YAM.ie – Putting Dublin\u2019s young creative community on the map!<\/h2>\n

YAM.ie (Your Arts Map) is a new website mapping out all arts and cultural events across Dublin created for and by 13 \u2013 25 year olds, along with interactive public transportation information on how to get to events. It has been developed through partnership between South Dublin County Council, Dublin City Council, Temple Bar Cultural Trust and the National Youth Council of Ireland.<\/p>\n

To me the website looks amazingly “unhip”, but I guess it is the content that counts…I hope. Considering that 13-25 year olds (isn’t that a VERY wide bracket?) often don’t have tooo much money available, I would have suggested they should just use the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” but maybe I am a tiny little bid biased! ;-)<\/p>\n

Seriously, though, with Culturefox, Dublintown, Dublin.ie and Yam, there are now four websites that all have been funded by tax payers money and who all – in a way – compete with each other. Something seems wrong there!!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

Drawings, models, photography and film explore the different scales and mediums that architects use to think, design and create. The Ferocious Mingle Market<\/h2>\n

The Ferocious Mingle Market takes place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Caf\u00e9 and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.<\/p>\n

Opoen House 2012 will run from Saturday until Sunday and extends to a long list of venues again (almost 100!). The event is organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation and the intention is to bring architecture closer to the people. At all tours in different buildings throughout Dublin, you will learn about the architecture of the specific building and about the intentions behind building it in a certain way. All guided tours are easy to understand and suitable for everyone, you don’t have to have a any engineering or architectural background.<\/p>\n

Culture Night looks at what happens IN the buildings, Open House looks at the buildings themselves. I love Open House because it allows people to see buildings they don’t normally can’t get into. In previous years I went to the Department of Foreign Affairs, Liberty Hall, the new Court of Crminal Justice, Mansion House and Custom House. This year I will go to Leinster House (Dail) and the Central Bank. Some buildings did require pre-booking, but many are accessible on a first come, first serve basis (expect queues!). Check the list of buildings on the website or pick up a programme in the Tourist Office in Suffolk Street (the former church), where I saw a few hundred brochures earlier in the week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Opoen House 2012 will run from Saturday until Sunday and extends to a long list of venues again (almost 100!). The event is organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation and the intention is to bring architecture closer to the people. At all tours in different buildings throughout Dublin, you will learn about the architecture of the specific building and about the intentions behind building it in a certain way. All guided tours are easy to understand and suitable for everyone, you don’t have to have a any engineering or architectural background.<\/p>\n

Culture Night looks at what happens IN the buildings, Open House looks at the buildings themselves. I love Open House because it allows people to see buildings they don’t normally can’t get into. In previous years I went to the Department of Foreign Affairs, Liberty Hall, the new Court of Crminal Justice, Mansion House and Custom House. This year I will go to Leinster House (Dail) and the Central Bank. Some buildings did require pre-booking, but many are accessible on a first come, first serve basis (expect queues!). Check the list of buildings on the website or pick up a programme in the Tourist Office in Suffolk Street (the former church), where I saw a few hundred brochures earlier in the week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The free Build Your Own Monster workshops are brought you free courtesy of Disney to celebrate the launch of their new animated movie Frankenweenie, a film about a young boy who conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog back to life with interesting consequences.
\nAt this workshop, construct your own crazy monster using some batteries, a motor, some wire and watch them race across the ground and spin in circles. This is a fun and exciting way to learn how to use hand tools and find out about how electricity works to create movement.<\/p>\n

A series of four screenings of Argentinian Films will take place on the next four Wednesdays. The launch event will be on Wed 10 Oct and will start at 18:00. This will be followed by the screening of the first film. All films are in Spanish with English subtitles and admission is free.

In politics, sortition (also known as allotment or the drawing of lots) is the selection of decision makers by lottery. The decision-makers are chosen as a random sample from a larger pool of candidates. In ancient Athenian democracy, sortition was the primary method for appointing officials, and its use was widely regarded as a principal characteristic of democracy. The randomly-selected jury remains widely regarded as a model of bringing ordinary people together to make vital public decisions; as a result, there are now many proposals to use the lottery as a democratic institution more expansively.<\/p>\n

This 1.5-day workshop will consider the lottery as a democratic institution.<\/p>\n

Coming Out Day is an international event which gives LGBT people the opportunity to be themselves. It also raises awareness of the LGBT community and LGBT rights movement.<\/p>\n

To mark Coming Out Day, the NLGF and Rainbow Europe will screen “Trans-Action” – a documentary movie about Anna Grodzka, who was born in a male body and decided to finally begin her life as a woman only in her 50s. Currently Anna Grodzka is the only transgender MP in the world. The screening will be in Polish with English subtitles.<\/p>\n

Dalkey Oil Field will make us rich – NOT!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Have you heard of the Dalkey Oil field that could make us rich? Or at least sort some of the financial problems Ireland has? Or at LEAST will provide us with cheaper or a secure source of oil for years to come? ALL wrong!!!
\nWhat is correct is that Providence Resources got a permission to drill 10km from Dalkey Island. http:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/2012\/1003\/providence-granted-licence-to-drill-off-dalkey-business.html<\/a> And what is also correct is that if they find the oil that they expect there, somebody is getting a LOT of money, but it won’t be you, me or the Irish state, it will only be Providence Resources because our incompetent government is giving the oil away for free! There will be no jobs onshore and all the oil will be immediately transported by ship to other countries. Read this assessment here http:\/\/www.broadsheet.ie\/2012\/10\/04\/dalkey-and-oil\/<\/a> and weep! Nothing<\/span> can justify giving the sparce natural resources Ireland has away to a private company like that!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
