Hi all!<\/p>\n

Did you follow my advise last Friday and went out to enjoy Culture Night? Like every year, Culture Night was a HUGE success. Thousands of people were out in Dublin to see venues and enjoy events that they normally wouldn’t go to. The City Centre was buzzing and I have not found a single person that didn’t have a good time. The venues that during the year charge a (often quite high) admission charge had VERY long queues (e.g. Trinity College Library\/Book of Kells, Wax Museum, Dublinia, etc.). Other venues were once insider tips and are now so popular that there were also massive queues outside (the Freemason’s Hall is the perfect example for that). And many other locations just had a steady and never-ending stream of interested visitors throughout the night. It was just great! So great, that the question HAS to be asked again if it was possible to have two (or even more) Culture Nights per year. I know it was once considered to have another Culture Night at the St. Patrick’s Weekend, but that idea seemingly hasn’t made it out of the idea stage yet. What do you think? I asked the question on the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Group ( http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DublinEventGuide<\/a> ) and a number of people added their opinions. You can still do that too or send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with your thoughts about having more than one Culture Night. I will gather the information and will let the people who are in charge of Culture Night know about the result.<\/p>\n

And I have another suggestion: If there is one building, venue that you really would like to visit, send me mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com) and let me know what building\/venue that is. If we have a critical mass of people who would like to see a specific place that is normally not available or where a (relatively high) admission charge is required, it might be possible to organise a special visit for Dublin Event Guide members. No promises! Just an idea. Get back to me with your suggestions.<\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. After Culture Night, the “Guinness-causes-mayhem” day on Thursday and ahead of Open House next week, it is definitely a little quieter this weekend and in the following week. But there are a few things you should check out.<\/p>\n

Have a look at the Rainforest Tour by Sky at the Point Village, pay some attention to the Harvest Festival on Saturday and the Vegetarian Day (maybe even if you are not Vegetarian) on Sunday. The Oktoberfest is continuing also and there you can get the meat you will not get at the Vegetarian Day.<\/p>\n

The Starling Market on Saturday and the Dublin Flea Market on Sunday both look interesting and I might go to both. If you are interested in the slightest in Opera, you HAVE to check out the story about Tristan & Isolde on Sunday afternoon. Women’s Self Defence Course for Charity<\/h2>\n

Allow me to include this once more! A good few people already have signed up, but the charity needs a lot more money, so we have moved the course now to a bigger venue and if you could tell your friends and family I would appreciate it:<\/p>\n

Some of you know that I teach self-defence classes at http:\/\/www.kravmagaireland.com<\/a> , one of my other hobbies. ;-) Patrick Cumiskey, who runs Krav Maga Ireland is also the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide and these two things together is reason enough for me to tell you about a great thing Patrick is doing. He will go to Haiti to help re-build houses because a huge amount of people there are still homeless more than 2.5 years after the devastating earthquake.<\/p>\n

To raise money for building materials for Haiti, Patrick is running a 1-day Self-Defence Course exclusively for women. It will take place on 06 Oct and will teach how to defend against the specific types of assault that can happen to women. This course is suitable for people who have never taken a self defence course before, but even if you have trained with us previously or have done some other course, you will benefit hugely and will learn new things. First you will learn how to avoid being a victim and how to stay safe. Then you will practice the relevant types of escapes. Krav Maga is an extremely effective and easy to learn self-defence system and no matter what your level of fitness is, you will be able to do that course. The fee for the whole day is just EUR 65 and you get a further reduction when you come with your friends. The Children’s Book Festival will take place from 01-31 October. Throughout the whole month, activities will be running in libraries, schools and arts centres. Boards.ie Deals have closed shop<\/h2>\n

Do you, like me, get mails from a whole range of “deals” companies? It started with CityDeals (Groupon) for many and then the “me too” deals providers just appeared everywhere. There must be at least 7 providing their services in Ireland and many wonder how this is sustainable. Well, one of them – and it was one of the best, I am told – has now decided that the crowded field is no fun anymore and they have closed their shop. Boards Deals, which is aligned to the discussion platform Boards.ie has with immediate effect stopped to provide new deals, however all exisiting vouchers etc are still honoured. http:\/\/businessetc.thejournal.ie\/boardsdeals-winds-down-613697-Sep2012\/<\/a> Is that a terrible thing? Well, it is a pity that not one of these small, semi-dodgy deals providers closed down first, but in the end some normalisation in that market will require a good few to close down, merge or (unlikely!) be bought. Thanks Boards Deals for providign a good service and for not leaving people in the lurch. Goodl uck with all other new ventures. (Nobody gor fired, but all employees were redeployed in Distilled Media who owned Boards Deals.)<\/p>\n

People hardly send or receive postcards nowadays. Emails and text messages have substituted them and have made them fall into oblivion. At the beginning of the previous century postcards were used to send brief messages to friends or family. In this case, .<\/p>\n

In the first half of the 20th Century the family of Spanish poet Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca and the De los R\u00edos family sent each other postcards almost daily. “The People’s Rainforest” – Tour<\/h2>\n

Sky has built a rainforest in the Point Village, Dublin for a special Sky 1 HD show THE PEOPLE\u2019S RAINFOREST. Part of Sky\u2019s ongoing commitment to protecting the rainforest through its Sky Rainforest Rescue campaign with WWF, the structure will be open to everybody to experience the rainforest for themselves.<\/p>\n

Expert \u2018Rainforest Rangers\u2019 will guide people into the forest via the Sky Rainforest Rescue \u2018Canopy Walkway\u2019 to learn about the people of the Amazon, their culture and livelihoods, and the threat that deforestation poses for current and future generations. The tour will also explore how the preservation of the rainforest is essential to life around the world and the effect that deforestation has on climate change. Next stop is the rainforest, where participants will get to experience first-hand a real life rainforest with trees and fauna!<\/p>\n

Expert \u2018Rainforest Rangers\u2019 will guide people into the forest via the Sky Rainforest Rescue \u2018Canopy Walkway\u2019 to learn about the people of the Amazon, their culture and livelihoods, and the threat that deforestation poses for current and future generations. The tour will also explore how the preservation of the rainforest is essential to life around the world and the effect that deforestation has on climate change. The Dublin Harvest Festival is being organised by the Dublin Community Growers, a voluntary non-profit organisation which was set up to support existing community gardens and promote the development of new ones.<\/p>\n

During the Harvest Festival organically grown produce from Dublin\u2019s Community Gardens will be exchanged for free with any individuals who want to join in the fun by pledging to help out with their local community garden. This could be with specific projects, or with the general maintenance and gardening. This is the third year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From June until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com invites to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based. All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sky has built a rainforest in the Point Village, Dublin for a special Sky 1 HD show THE PEOPLE\u2019S RAINFOREST. Part of Sky\u2019s ongoing commitment to protecting the rainforest through its Sky Rainforest Rescue campaign with WWF, the structure will be open to everybody to experience the rainforest for themselves.<\/p>\n

Expert \u2018Rainforest Rangers\u2019 will guide people into the forest via the Sky Rainforest Rescue \u2018Canopy Walkway\u2019 to learn about the people of the Amazon, their culture and livelihoods, and the threat that deforestation poses for current and future generations. The tour will also explore how the preservation of the rainforest is essential to life around the world and the effect that deforestation has on climate change. Next stop is the rainforest, where participants will get to experience first-hand a real life rainforest with trees and fauna!<\/p>\n

Her music has taken her to many parts of the world, both as solo artist and with different groups, of which “Man\u00e1” especially stands out. She was a backing singer with famous Mexican rock band Man\u00e1 from 1992-2003. Now she is working with new material where she interprets her own compositions. The most recent one, “Trozos de Luna”, was produced by Fher, the leader and singer of “Man\u00e1”, along with Fernando Quintana, who is accompanying her during the visit to her roots in Ireland.<\/p>\n

This year staff from the National Botanic Gardens visited the brand new Aegean Botanic Gardens on the island. The garden features the native flora of the region along with demonstrating a most unique traditional crop known as \u201cMastic\u201d, which is a special cultivar of Pistachia lentiscus. Thinking outside the Square(s), an evening of short but powerful presentations asking why we too often approach the north and south Georgian quarters in isolation from each other and, taking Mountjoy and Merrion Squares as the key examples, what can be gained from imagining a joined-up future for Dublin\u2019s historic core.<\/p>\n

Chaired by Fintan O\u2019Toole, Irish Times columnist, speakers include Nicki Matthews, Dublin City Council\u2019s Conservation Officer, Ciaran O\u2019Gaora, director of Zero-G design, brand and communications studio; Mary King, Policy & Planning Officer with F\u00e1ilte Ireland, Ciaran Cuffe, Lecturer in Planning at DIT and Karin O’Flanagan, Secretary of the Mountjoy Square Society. This Open House event is organised in partnership with DCC City Architects Division, this promises to be a mind-expanding evening in an incredible venue.<\/p>\n

I won’t be able to make it, but it sounds interesting. The only thing I don’t get is why the question even came up! WHY should two squares that are in completely different parts of the city not be treated in isolation? Just because they were built around the same time? That is a very weak link!<\/p>\n

Places are very limited, so you have to come early to get in. Doors open at 18:30.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Opoen House 2012 will run from Saturday until Sunday and extends to a long list of venues again (almost 100!). The event is organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation and the intention is to bring architecture closer to the people. At all tours in different buildings throughout Dublin, you will learn about the architecture of the specific building and about the intentions behind building it in a certain way. All guided tours are easy to understand and suitable for everyone, you don’t have to have a any engineering or architectural background.<\/p>\n

Culture Night looks at what happens IN the buildings, Open House looks at the buildings themselves. I love Open House because it allows people to see buildings they don’t normally can’t get into. In previous years I went to the Department of Foreign Affairs, Liberty Hall, the new Court of Crminal Justice, Mansion House and Custom House. This year I will go to Leinster House (Dail) and the Central Bank. Some buildings did require pre-booking, but many are accessible on a first come, first serve basis (expect queues!). This week there were soooo many things odd, that I had to drop most of them. I “only” selected three:<\/p>\n

Massive Dublin City FAIL – Car Free Day<\/strong><\/p>\n

You might remember that I wrote about the European Mobility Week and the Car Free Day, which is now called “In Town without my Car Day”. Dublin City had organised sizeable events a few years ago, but lately their enthusiasm for the week\/day seemed to have disappeared. In their own Events Calendar NO event for “In Town without my Car Day” was listed. The Press Release didn’t include anything of substance, but then to my surprise I found an event notification on dublintown.ie ( http:\/\/dublintown.ie\/whatson\/dame-district-street-show\/<\/a> ) It said that Exchequer Street and Fade Street would be closed, live music on a stage was allegedly entertaining in Exchequer Street and a family programme was promised for Fade Street. I checked on Saturday and it was odd to see that Exchequer Street was NOT closed and there was NO stage and NO live music. Fade Street was closed and when I walked by at 13:30 (the event had started at 12:30), there was a clown on stilts and not a single visitor and at 14:40 one or two families with children had made it.
\nWe are used to Dublin City’s usual approach: Relatively good events are being miserably advertised. But this one was in a different league. Total failure in all aspects!? Odd!!<\/p>\n

Incredible: Milli ons of donations to Quinn family<\/strong><\/p>\n

Human beings are very very strange “animals”, but I was speechless when I heard about this: The Quinn family, which is undoubtedly one of the most dodgiest families in the Irish rich list. A family that from bankrupting their own huge insurance company while loaning money from that company, via loaning money from a bank to buy shares in the same bank – with disastrous results, to interfering with clear instructions from a court to the degree that the son and the nephew already got prison sentences and the father has ONE foot in prison with the second foot being close by. This dodgy family incredibly got EUR 2mio in donations from 50 donors (individuals and businesses). It was highlighted by Fergus Finlay, the CEO of the children’s charity Barnardos. How dodgy do the 50 have to be to be prepared to donate soo much money? http:\/\/www.breakingnews.ie\/ireland\/finlay-quinns-dont-deserve-donations-to-fight-fraud-case-568064.html<\/a><\/p>\n

Elections on a Saturday?<\/strong><\/p>\n

For years people complain about the fact that elections\/national votes are always on a Thursday or Friday. A strategy that – combined with the undemocratic fact that you can’t vote by letter ballot – makes it impossible for many to cast their vote if they work or go to university in another part of the country than where they declare their home. The government was never prepared to move the voting to a weekend. Strangely and surprisingly, now it is suddenly possible! The Children’s referendum will take place on Sat 10 Nov! What did suddenly change that makes the move to a weekend possible? http:\/\/www.merrionstreet.ie\/index.php\/2012\/09\/taoiseach-daenda-kenny-announces-polling-date-of-november-10th-for-childrens-referendum\/?cat=3<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
