Happy New Year!! May 2009 be better than 2008 despite all the current and upcoming challenges. And hopefully we will all see opportunities in these challenges instead of disaster and bad luck!
\nI read recently that an economic crisis is the time when INNOVATION and INITIATIVE are required. Governments can’t help with this, because they are trying to fire-fight and usually the talents of innovation and initiative are not the strongest talents of a political system anyway. As a result we all are required to become innovative and to take action and to stop waiting for our governments to “sort out” the problems. So don’t allow “bad” news about the economy or about jobs and redundancy to paralyse you, but think about how the news can be turned into something positive. Maybe it is the opportunity to realise a dream, to try a new professional avenue or to do something completely different that you always had in the back of your head!?<\/p>\n
I know that many of you didn’t get a chance to read last week’s Event Guide because you were on holidays etc. I hope you had a good time! ;-) If you did read last week’s issue, forgive me for repeating myself this week. I want to include another time the appeal regarding the New Years Resolution, so that most of you have a chance to read about it even if you were on holidays:<\/p>\n
Now that 2009 has arrived it is time to think of New Years Resolutions and while I am not the biggest fans of New Years Resolutions I would like to exchange some with you! \nI was quite disappointed to see a maximum of 75% discounts in the Sales after Christmas. Since we had seen 20% discount in most shops BEFORE Christmas, I was at least hoping for SOME 100%, or maybe even 120% discounts! ;-)

\nTwo of the current exhibitions, ‘In Praise of Shadows’ and ‘William McKeown’, will close on 4 Jan. \nThe Irish President (Mary McAleese) lives with her family in “\u00c1ras an Uachtar\u00e1in” in Phoenix Park and – many don’t know this – a part of this residence can be viewed during a free guided tour every Saturday. Since there are not too many other events taking place this week, you could visit the residence of the Irish President.
\n\u00c1ras an Uachtar\u00e1in is open Saturdays only. Free admission tickets are issued at The Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day. Group and\/or advance booking is not possible. The Phoenix Park Visitor Centre is just North of the entrance gate to Aras an Uachtarain. Guided Tours are taking place between 10:30-15:30 in Winter and will be for a duration of 60 minutes. \nThe Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign has called a National Demonstration in solidarity with Gaza for this Sat 03 January. The protest will begin with speeches at 13:00 at the Central Bank Plaza, a march to the Dail (Kildare Street), the EU Offices (Molesworth Street), and a rally at the Spire on O’Connell Street will follow. The slogan we will be “Free Gaza: Stop the Slaughter! End the Siege!” http:\/\/www.ipsc.ie\/<\/a>
\nI know that the Gaza situation is hugely complex and some of you might be confused about who is right and who is wrong. On one hand the Hamas has attacked Israelian housing areas with rockets and it is no surprise that Israel is not just sitting there doing nothing. However, the international community is in agreement that Israel’s response to the Hamas attacks is not justified and that the killing of hundreds and injuring of thousands of Palestinian civilians through attacks by air and a possible ground invasion are not the appropriate means to deal with the rockets the Hamas has fired into Israel. For every Palestinian Israel is killing, I would expect that 10 other Palestinians are prepared to give their life to hurt Israel and that is certainly not a good start for de-escalation. In my opinion it is not acceptable that Palestinians continue to shoot rockets into Israelian housing areas, BUT there has to be another way to deal with that. So, I think the Palestinians in the Gaza strip do need our support!<\/p>\n
\nThis is not a free event, but at a price of EUR 3 at a weekend when not too many other things are taking place, I think it is ok to mention this event.

\nFrom the end of December 2008 until December 2009 an impressive programme of workshops for children will be provided in Phoenix Park. Every Sunday Morning from 10:30-12:30 the workshops will take place and participation is free. However, the max number is 20 and the workshops are suitable for ages 5+ (Parental supervision required.) Phoenix Park is a prime example of a seventeenth-century deer-park and was established within its present boundaries between 1662 and 1680. The park landscape is dominated by grassland separated by clumps of trees, which may appear to be haphazardly grown; but which were planted to complement other aspects of the park. The children’s workshops combine art, nature awareness, history and heritage and are taking place at the Visitor Centre.

\nToday is the fest of “Reyes Magos” in Spain and the children got their presents last night. But not only Spain gives this day a special meaning, in Ireland it has an important role as well. Here it is called “Little Christmas” or “Women’s Christmas”. It is so called because of the tradition in some parts of Ireland of Irish men taking on all the household duties for the day and giving their spouses a day off. The topic is “How fast can climate change? Evidence from the past.” – And the description is “The world’s climate is entering into a period of change described as abrupt (Intergovernmental panel on climate change, 2007). Unfortunately, we have very few ways of measuring what kind of abrupt change might occur. One source of evidence is past (also called palaeo) climate, covering a period of time long before weather stations were used, or even invented. The reason we can study this period is because plants, animals, and all sorts of chemicals have recorded the climate for us. When we dig up these so-called climate proxies to look back, we see horrifying jumps in climate well beyond that predicted by the most advanced computer models currently used. This talk will look at how we reconstruct past climate from proxies and how we try and make honest judgements about climate change taking account of the uncertainty in the measurements we have. \n‘Sketchcrawl’ is an international event, which sees artists all over the world gathering in their respective cities on one specific day and ‘crawling’ around, drawing\/painting whatever they see. The results are then posted on the internet, with the result being that we have a ‘snapshot’ of the world on one specific day through the eyes of the artistic natives! Therese Ryan informed me about this event and about the fact that there is an Irish offspring of it in Dublin too:
\nAll artists, whether pro or amateur, are invited to meet at the Spire in O’Connell Street on Sat 10 Jan at 11:00. The crawl will take the participants from the Spire to the Liffey, then into Trinity College, then St. Stephen’s Green, down Dame St and around Temple Bar. Crossing Ha’penny Bridge, the Italian quarter will be visited, before heading to Phoenix Park. Then the crawl goes back to O’Connell Bridge and it will finish at around 15:00 with a pint in Messrs Maguire (near O’Connell Bridge).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ANYONE is invited, regardless of talent and all is free (but you have to bring your own material).\u00a0 Just be sure to have your sketchbooks out so that you can be recognised.

\nMaths is a nuisance, isn’t it? Especially solving complicated equations can do your head in, don’t you think? Luckily, for the REALLY complicated stuff, we have our fancy mobile phones with their calculators.
\nI witnessed such a head-wrecking situation in BT2 during the Sales last week. A (physically) VERY well trained guy was standing next to me, holding some Jeans up. The original price was EUR 100 and the discount was 40%. Complicated stuff, I know!!
\nWell, the guy was definitely smart, because he remembered that for situations like that you bring your mobile phone (and you don’t always have to “phone a friend” or “ask the audience”). He whipped the phone out of his pocket, typed swiftly in “100-40%=\u2026” and the day was saved.:-) Thank god for mobile phones!!
