We had good weather for nearly a WHOLE week! Wow! The kids must be back in school! In most years it seems to be the first week of September that pretends to give us a bit of a summer. And I can tell you, I am grateful for every ray of sun. :-)<\/p>\n

A whole series of festivals will start in the coming weeks with the Fringe Festival, Theatre Festival and Opera Festival being the three biggies. Unfortunately, though , they are not free and have very few free events. But Culture Night on 21 Sept will make up for it, I’d say. A whole evening of free culture.<\/p>\n

There are again about 140 free event this week, so I hope you find something that you like. But I made a little mistake this week! I forgot to include the events in the National Gallery and in the National Museum. Now I have two options. I can either spend another half an hour (or more) and add these events, but then you will get the Event Guide again quite late. Or I can give you the links and ask you for your help in checking the events in this two museums yourself. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. This weekend I plan to start with the City Vineyard in Temple Bar and continue with some Dublin Fashion Festival events (out of curiosity :-) ). Then Phizzfest is on the plan and maybe the Family Fitness Weekend in Farmleigh House. The Printfest in the Print Museum is also very interesting, but I can’t do everything. ;-)<\/p>\n

There is a Swing Picnic on Sunday and the SARI Soccerfest is still on and also the Sunday at Noon Concerts in the Hugh Lane Gallery are back. Busy week.<\/p>\n

The competition this week is somewhat unusual but it comes with two bonuses. You can help some DCU research and also can win a prize. The prizes are TWO organic fruit boxes from Home Organics (delivered to your home or place of work if it is within the M50, or it can be collected in the City Centre). To enter the competition you have to ring a Skype Line between Monday and Friday (from 10:00-17:00). and ask a question about something that you need to know. It will take you about two minutes. The question is completely up to you and can be an invented question or can be a real question. So, instead of searching on Google, you can phone this Skype Helpline. The agent might ask a few questions to clarify and will ask you for your e-mail address so that your will be added to the draw for the two fruit boxes.<\/p>\n

You probably wonder what it is for and it is an interesting project done by CLARITY , the Centre for Sensor Web Technologies at DCU (http:\/\/www.clarity-centre.org<\/a>). The research is on memorability and is to develop a product aimed at call centre agents to improve the customer service a call centre can provide.<\/p>\n

www.festivals.ie is a relatively new and upcoming website that provides key information about festivals in Ireland<\/a>, UK and the rest of Europe and I am happy to announce that festivals.ie have joined the distinguished list of Dublin Event Guide sponsors. You will find information about all types of festivals on their website. Music, Comedy, Sports, Art, Film everything is or will be listed there and as you can imagine, there are lots more non-free festivals, than free festivals. A neat feature is a search for artists at festivals, so if you type in the artist you like, the site tells you at which festivals this artist\/band was or will be. Exchange Dublin gets better and better<\/h2>\n

If you are a longterm reader of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), you undoubtedly have ssen a large number of events taking place in the Exchange Dublin in Upper Exchange Street, the Old Town part of Temple Bar. The Exchange is a brilliant space that is available for all sorts of events and because nearly all events are free we have to be grateful to the wonderful people (all volunteers!) who run it and who give their time and energy to keep it going.
\nThe events were always great, but it was at times difficult to find out more details about them and – for the purpose of this e-zine – to confirm that they are free. Now, the people in the Exchange have added lots more information to their Event Calender on their website and consequently have opened their programme to an even wider audience! Great stuff! Dublin Duck Race<\/h2>\n

Duck Races are the latest fad! There have been at least three Duck Races already this year. At a Duck Race lots of sponsored rubber ducks will be put in the water (Liffey or Grand Canal Dock) and the duck that swims over the finish line first is the winner. The sponsor of that duck (they have numbers) will win a price.The money that people paid for the sponsored ducks will go to a charity.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Duck Race for Niall Mellon Township Trust will take place on Sun 16 Sept at 14:15. And you have still time to buy\/sponsor one or more ducks for EUR 5. The race will start at the Millenium Bridge and will Finish at O’Connell Bridge. Have you ever seen the “Doors of Dublin” postcard? It is a postcard with lots of small pictures of the colourful doors of Georgian Dublin on it. If you can’t remember it, cehck it out here http:\/\/followalena.com\/zp1\/albums\/Dublin\/Dublin-Postcard.jpg<\/a> I don’t know if there was a “Shops of Dublin” postcard, but based on the “Doors of Dublin” concept a new postcard reflecting todays “Shops of Dublin” has been created. On some websites I found that DC2 is already taking place, but then I couldn’t find any events for now. So what’s going on? DC2: Gentrify THIS! is as the organisers describe “a celebration of creativity taking place at the heart of Dublin\u2019s emergent creative quarter. It showcases the work of over 30 high-profile creatives based in Dublin and across the Island of Ireland. DC2: Gentrify THIS! is a free indoors and outdoors festival for all.” Sounds interesting! Dublin Fashion Festival<\/h2>\n

The Dublin Fashion Festival (06-09 Sept) is part of the programme of events organized by Dublin Business Improvement District (BID) and is there to highlight the fashion and style available in stores, hotels, restaurants and bars throughout Dublin city centre. The job o f the Dublin Business Improvement District is to help increasing the business for shops in Dublin, so it is in their interest ot get people to come tot the city and then to go into shops and buy there.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, you will see that the Dublin Fashion Festival is not a festival in the typical sense with lots of festival events throughout the day and night in one or a few central locations. The Phibsborough Community Arts Festival “Phizzfest” is a vibrant community arts festival which brings the little urban village of Phibsborough alive in the first week of September each year. It was established to develop an annual celebration of artistic life around Phibsborough, to highlight the rich diversity of culture and to provide a showcase for the local talent.<\/p>\n

The week long festival will go into the second and therefore last weekend and there still about 20 events in the programme.<\/p>\n

Phizzfest is run entirely by volunteers with support from grant authorities, the generous sponsorship of local businesses, and a wealth of artistic contributions. Impressively and unlike other similar festivals, they have a nice and usable website and even a downloadable PDF programme at http:\/\/www.phizzfest.ie\/2012\/guide\/phizzfest_programme_2012.pdf<\/a> Every year the festival gets better and I w ould say it is one of the best if not even THE best urban village\/suburb festivals in Dublin.<\/p>\n

SARI (Sport against Racism Ireland) are inviting to a weekend of soccer on the Garda and Camogie Sports Grounds in Phoenix Park (near Dublin Zoo).<\/p>\n

“Over 50 7-a-side soccer teams will compete in the largest intercultural 7-a-side soccer tournament in Europe. Sport Against Racism Ireland (SARI) aims to combat racism and discrimination in sport, while promoting dignity and respect for all. There will be 40 men’s teams, 8 women’s teams and 8 Under13 teams.<\/p>\n

On Saturday afternoon a SARI ‘All Stars’ soccer game will take place at 14:00 featuring Olympic silver medallist John Joe Nevin, boxing hero Darren O’Neill along with a host of celebrated sportsmen and women.<\/p>\n

From June until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com invites to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based. All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The Dublin Fashion Festival (06-09 Sept) is part of the programme of events organized by Dublin Business Improvement District (BID) and is there to highlight the fashion and style available in stores, hotels, restaurants and bars throughout Dublin city centre. The job o f the Dublin Business Improvement District is to help increasing the business for shops in Dublin, so it is in their interest ot get people to come tot the city and then to go into shops and buy there.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, you will see that the Dublin Fashion Festival is not a festival in the typical sense with lots of festival events throughout the day and night in one or a few central locations. Instead it is a number of events that are just meant to give you an added reason to come to town. Nothing wrong with that, but don’t expect too much from the “Dublin Fashion Festival”.<\/p>\n

A number of fashion related events will take place in shops and pubs\/bars and there will be a few central fashion shows.<\/p>\n

The central and free events are:
\n+ Barnardos Vintage Pop-Up Store in the GPO Arcade (off Henry Street) from Thurs 06 – Sun 09 Sept (09:00-18:30)
\n+ Fabulous Food Event (15:00-17:00) in Ilac Shopping Centre: Sample food from the places to eat in the Ilac Centre.<\/p>\n

The Phibsborough Community Arts Festival “Phizzfest” is a vibrant community arts festival which brings the little urban village of Phibsborough alive in the first week of September each year. It was established to develop an annual celebration of artistic life around Phibsborough, to highlight the rich diversity of culture and to provide a showcase for the local talent.<\/p>\n

The week long festival will go into the second and therefore last weekend and there still about 20 events in the programme.<\/p>\n

Phizzfest is run entirely by volunteers with support from grant authorities, the generous sponsorship of local businesses, and a wealth of artistic contributions. Impressively and unlike other similar festivals, they have a nice and usable website and even a downloadable PDF programme at http:\/\/www.phizzfest.ie\/2012\/guide\/phizzfest_programme_2012.pdf<\/a> Every year the festival gets better and I w ould say it is one of the best if not even THE best urban village\/suburb festivals in Dublin.<\/p>\n

There is a mix of free and non-free festivals (with a (perceived) majority of non-free events) and I recommend that you check the programme and select the events that interest you. Just to repeat: Many events are not free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Over 50 7-a-side soccer teams will compete in the largest intercultural 7-a-side soccer tournament in Europe. Sport Against Racism Ireland (SARI) aims to combat racism and discrimination in sport, while promoting dignity and respect for all. There will be 40 men’s teams, 8 women’s teams and 8 Under13 teams.<\/p>\n

On Saturday afternoon a SARI ‘All Stars’ soccer game will take place at 14:00 featuring Olympic silver medallist John Joe Nevin, boxing hero Darren O’Neill along with a host of celebrated sportsmen and women.<\/p>\n

This year Dublin will experience not just one, but two “German” Oktoberfests. Some seem to think that the Oktoberfest moved from the George’s Dock to the Round Room, but that is incorrect. Instead, the Paulaner Oktoberfest will take place from 13-16 Sept in the Round Room and then from 27 Sept – 07 Oct the Erdinger Oktoberfest will take place in George’s Dock as in previous years.<\/p>\n

In my opinion, both venues are entirely unsuitable for a festival of this type, but I guess they are the best we have in Dublin. The Oktoberfest is an extremely popular event and attracts LOADS of people every year. The small number of people that are allowed on the platform in George’s Dock means that there are huge queues every year.<\/p>\n

The Round Room is also much too small with a capacity of only somewhere around 500 people. So be prepared that you have to queue for a long while or might not even get in. If you definitely want to go either come extra early or – if you are a large group – consider booking a table (not cheap, but beer and food is included in the price). Admission is free to the event.<\/p>\n

If you do get in, I am sure you will have a great time. There will be a awful (…and I am German! :-) ) German music, good food and good beer.<\/p>\n

The Underground Cinema Film Festival is particularly supporting emerging filmmakers and the organisers have the belief that no matter what the film\u2019s budget or the director\u2019s vision it\u2019s the filmmakers passion that drives a film. Jamie Murphy will present a talk on his limited edition letterpress book \u2018Albert, Ernest & The Titanic\u2019, which he has completed over the last two years for his MA in Visual Communication at NCAD. The book tells the story of the ship\u2019s ill-fated on board printers, Abraham \u2018Albert\u2019 Mishellany and Ernest Corbin, as they travel on the ship\u2019s doomed maiden voyage. All the illustrations within the book were cut by hand. All the type was hand set in a mix of early and mid-twentieth century Grotesque typefaces and newly mono-cast Garamond and one of the inks used was specially created from coal retrieved from the ship’s wreck site. Cannonball Run was the title of a comedy movie with Burt Reynolds and Roger Moore. It was an illegal race across the USA with lots of cars and trucks. Since then Cannonball Runs have appeared in a number of countries and Ireland has its own Cannonball Run as well. The Irish version will take place from Fri 14 – Sun 16 Sept will run over 1000 km and about 150 cars and 400 participants will be part of the run. It is not a race, but a gentle drive. Participants pay quite a lot of money and some of the money will go to the charity “Children\u2019s Sunshine Home” in Dublin who are caring for chronically ill children and their families.
\nBut if you would love to see 150 nice cars and some of them will be supercars, then you have to be at Merrion Square at or before 10:00, where the Cannonball Run will take off at 10:00. https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cannonball.ie<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Underground Cinema Film Festival is particularly supporting emerging filmmakers and the organisers have the belief that no matter what the film\u2019s budget or the director\u2019s vision it\u2019s the filmmakers passion that drives a film. From underground cult films to more traditional family fare, the festival has a very diverse program, offering something for film fans of all ages.<\/p>\n

Film Festivals are usually not free and the same applies to the Underground Film Festival. This year Dublin will experience not just one, but two “German” Oktoberfests. Some seem to think that the Oktoberfest moved from the George’s Dock to the Round Room, but that is incorrect. Instead, the Paulaner Oktoberfest will take place from 13-16 Sept in the Round Room and then from 27 Sept – 07 Oct the Erdinger Oktoberfest will take place in George’s Dock as in previous years.<\/p>\n

In my opinion, both venues are entirely unsuitable for a festival of this type, but I guess they are the best we have in Dublin. The Oktoberfest is an extremely popular event and attracts LOADS of people every year. The small number of people that are allowed on the platform in George’s Dock means that there are huge queues every year.<\/p>\n

The Round Room is also much too small with a capacity of only somewhere around 500 people. So be prepared that you have to queue for a long while or might not even get in. If you definitely want to go either come extra early or – if you are a large group – consider booking a table (not cheap, but beer and food is included in the price). Admission is free to the event.<\/p>\n

If you do get in, I am sure you will have a great time. There will be a awful (…and I am German! :-) ) German music, good food and good beer.<\/p>\n

Opening times are on Thurs, Fri and Sat from 17:00-00:00 and on Sunday from 15:00-22:00.<\/p>\n

World Peace Weekend Festival – Dublin Events<\/h2>\n

The World Peace Weekend Festival in Dublin will take place around the International Day of Peace, from Fri 21 – Sun 23 Sept. “Instruments of Peace” is the charity foundation that will organise and run the events in Dublin. In 2010, they had a very successful event at The Helix, the \u201cFour Seasons of Peace\u201d Concert and last year they had two impactful events at The Convention Centre Dublin reaching 2,000 people.<\/p>\n

This year they are celebrating a \u201cWorld Peace Weekend Festival\u201d which starts with the observance of the U.N. One Minute of Silence at 12:00 on Fri 21 Sept. Ireland\u2019s observance will be televised live by the U.N. through the UN PEACE DAY LIVE.TV.<\/p>\n

+ The Opening Ceremony (11:30-12:30) in Dublin at Trinity College will be “A Minute of Silence, A Moment of Peace” and students and everybody else is invited to participate in a World Record attempt of 1,000 people to hold hands for One Minute of Silence. (Guinness Book of Records will adjudicate this event. Currently the record holder is Hiroshima in Japan, with 600 people holding hands for one minute in silence for Peace in May 2012.)<\/p>\n

+ On Saturday 22 Sept, a Peace Conference will take place in the Mansion House from 11:00-15:30<\/p>\n

The Cabinet is back and the mayhem continues<\/strong><\/p>\n

We had a number of quiet weeks. No massive political disasters, no embarrassing U-Turns and no horror messages about the economy. Were you surprised? Well, the reason why all went smooth is because the politicians were on holidays. Unfortunately it doesn’t mean that when they are gone all is better, otherwise we should send them away all the time. But it is interesting that no screw-ups happen and nobody is busy telling us how bad the state of the country is and still things function. However, the good times are over.
\nAfter a very long and most likely very undeserved extended holiday period, the cabinet has returned and is continuing where they have left it. The parliament will be back as well and expect all the old news to come back and haunt us again.
\nThe first major issue was caused by the Department of Health, or maybe not?! Well, we all know that money needs to be saved and cutting it in the Department of Health is probably the easiest way to get savings, because we wouldn’t want to cut it from overpaid government advisors or from all the civil service benefits (Imagine there is indeed money paid to some civial servants if they have their lunch at their desk! Incredible! http:\/\/www.independent.ie\/opinion\/analysis\/eamon-delaney-abolishing-benefits-is-beyond-this-coalition-3161480.html<\/a>) So instead, the Health Minister seemed to have decided to take money away from disabled and less-abled people. Maybe not the smartest move, but I don’t even want assess that because enough has been written about that. What I find, however very interesting is that when the Health Minister announced that he will reverse the disability cut, his boss, the Taoiseach said to the media that he should be admired for doing so. WAIT!
\nHow can it happen that your boss tells you you did well undoing something really big. Did he not know that you were going to do it in the first place? And he didn’t stop you? Who is in charge in this government? Do the ministers not have to report to the Taoiseach before they make massive decisions? In any normal company, your boss would want to know before you make a massive change that affects thousands of your “customers”. Why is that not done in this government? What an incompetent bunch! Not more incompetent than the previous government, but unfortunately not less incompetent either. Sigh!
