This weekend is Electric Picnic weekend and it seems that Event Organisers are totally afraid of that festival. I don’t know why, because there are not THAT many people going. I don’t know how many will be there, but let’s assume it is around 35,000 from all over Ireland. Is that really enough of a reason to squeze all events in the two weekends before? Well, it doesn’t really matter. If you are at the Electric Picnic, I hope you have a great time and if you are not there, then just check out the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and you will find enough to fill your day! :-)

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down<\/em><\/p>\n

Last weekend was perfect. Great weather and lots of good events and I loved it. This weekend is significantly quieter, but nevertheless there are a good few things to do and also it gives you a chance to go back to the old reliables like the markets in Temple Bar on Saturday and Dun Laoghair eon Saturday and Sunday and to remember parks and museums.<\/p>\n

But you don’t HAVE to! Instead you could go to the 5000 people mass in Dublin Castle tomorrow morning and afterwards enjoy the Tailgate party in Temple Bar. In the afternoon you can either watch the American Football game (I hope some pubs will be able to show it.) But be prepared for a duration of around 3.5 hours! Or you could go to Phibsborough for the Phizzfest. The current Science Gallery exhibition will close next Friday, so this is your last chance this weekend. And the Merrion Square 250th anniversary comes with a numer of events this weekend and during the week that also can keep you busy.<\/p>\n

I might go to Temple Bar tomorrow, then to the Science Gallery and in the evening, if I manage , to the Mint Bar for the Ratzingers gig. On Sunday, Merion Square is on my list, the last chance to see the sand sculptured (if they weren’t destroyed by the 5000 people at the mass on Sunday) and maybe the Phizzfest. Druing the week I will be busy, but will not miss the City Vineyard, it sounds good!<\/p>\n

Who needs the Electric Picnic to be kept busy! ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Emerald Isle Classic: Notre Dame vs Navy<\/h2>\n

The two College Teams Notre Dame and US Naval Academy (“Navy”) will open the College Football Season with the first game this week. It is unusual that the game takes place abroad and this seemingly caused some challenges (http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/newspaper\/ireland\/2012\/0828\/1224323097374.html<\/a>) but with an estimated visitor number of to 35,000, the event will be a nice little earner for hotels, pubs and restaurants in Dublin. I dare to doubt the claim that it will bring EUR 100 mio to Ireland. but. hey, even if it was only 1 mio that otherwise wouldn’t have been left here, it is worth it.<\/p>\n

Expect Dublin to be Americanised with flags and “welcomes” everywhere and expect the City Centre to be flooded by supporters and their families over the weekend.<\/p>\n

If you have been anywhere near Dublin Port you probably saw the USS Fort McHenry which has arrived in Dublin for the Emerald Classic with 350 sailors and 400 Marines. Unfortunately you won’t be able to visit the ship if you don’t have a ticket. Tickets were given out through a lottery by the US Embassy. (But they didn’t tell me about it, so I couldn’t tell you! :-) ).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Vodafone upsets Webtext customers<\/h2>\n
\n

Vodafone provides their customers with 600 free “Webtext” text messages (national and international) every month and never stipulated any usage limitations. Clever programmers had written applications (e.g. Jelly SMS, Eirtext and Cabbage) that were able to make use of these free SMS when sending text messages from your phone. A very handy feature that I myself used quite a bit. However in a surprise move Vodafone has now introduced a further “security check”. After username and password users now have to enter another 4-letter code in the from of a captcha (a picture that shows four letters which you will have to type into a password field). This new hurdle has rendered all 3rd party applications that can make use of the 600 Webtexts completely useless and the Vodafone user community has no doubt that Vodafone only introduced it to stop the use of these applications. Many webtext users are seriously upset and the Vodafone user forums are spilling over with complaints. http:\/\/forum.vodafone.ie\/index.php?\/topic\/12719-apps-using-web-text-disabled\/<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

National Museum Events<\/h2>\n

The National Museum is doing a really great job in running lots of free events in their three Dublin branches for children and adults and I regularly list them here individually. Due to the large amount of other events, I won’t be able to list them one by one as there are even more events on in the museums for Heritage Week. Pure Vintage Market discontinued<\/h2>\n

The Pure Vintage Market in the Dublin Food Co-op has been discontinued. It did take place on the first Sunday in the month for a while, but will not take place this weekend or in the following months. However, there are other Vintage free markets available that mightbe of interest to you: The Brocante Market, also in the Food Co-op on the 3rd Sunday of every month and the Ferocious Mingle Market in Thomas Street four days a week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The Ferocious Mingle Market<\/h2>\n

The Ferocious Mingle Market takes place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Caf\u00e9 and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.<\/p>\n

The Emerald Isle Classic American Football Team of the Navy will have their Pep-Rally on Friday at 17:30 next to the bandstand in St. Stephens Green with Band and Cheerleaders. Expect a huge amount of people trying to squeeze in the relatively small area near the bandstand. Access is free and on a first come first served basis.<\/p>\n

The Navy team doesn’t have any other public events planned. Their supporters will, however, participate in the Tailgate on Saturday morning in Temple Bar and you will find out the details about that event in the event listing “Emerald Isle Classic: Notre Dame” at 09:00 on Sat.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Emerald Isle Classic, the American Football Game between Notre Dame (the Fighting Irish) and the Navy will be a a big part of this weekend. There won’t be too many events, but with up to 35,000 American visitors for the game and a sold out Aviva\/Lansdowne Road Stadium with more than 50,000 people, you can imagine that you will see and hear a lot about it.<\/p>\n

While we might think this is a happy get together planned as a show match, this is absolutely not the case, this Football Game is SERIOUS business for the two teams and they have hired separate PR agencies and run their own events.<\/p>\n

The Notre Dame team has a Pep-Rally on Friday evening in the O2\/Point Theatre, but this event is private\/sold out and as a charity event wasn’t free anyway. However, there are two events on Saturday that might interest you.<\/p>\n

The first event is at 09:00 a mass with more than 5000 people in the Upper Court Yard of Dublin Castle. Access to the mass is on a first come first served basis, but you can also watch it on RTE Player or on RTE on Sunday morning. After the match the Notre Dame band will march the short distance to Temple Bar where a “Tailgate” will take place.<\/p>\n

A TailgateParty at an American Football match is a Party that takes place on a big parking lot with open boots\/tailgates of trucks and cars where the supporters have BBQs and eat and drink before the match. We don’t have a big parking lot in the City Centre, and the thousands of visitors didn’t bring their trucks, so instead the pubs, bars and restaurants are the “trucks” and the food is not taking out of the own truck but bought in Temple Bar.<\/p>\n

At 11:00 the Notre Dame band will perform on the Central Bank Plaza.<\/p>\n

At 14:00 the game will kick off in the Aviva\/Lansdowne Road stadium, so between 11:00 and 14:00 the masses will make their way to the stadium. After the game (possibly around 17:00) you can expect the City Centre getting flooded again with fans and supporters to continue their parties.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Phibsborough Community Arts Festival “Phizzfest” is a vibrant community arts festival which brings the little urban village of Phibsborough alive in the first week of September each year. It was established to develop an annual celebration of artistic life around Phibsborough, to highlight the rich diversity of culture and to provide a showcase for the local talent.<\/p>\n

The week long festival will offer a wide variety of events. It could be a play in the Pillar Room at the Mater Hospital, an arts exhibition at the Fire Station, a concert in All Saints Church, a tribal belly dancing workshop in the Scout Hall. It could be canoe polo on the Royal Canal, a classical recital at the library. It could be comedy, trad, rock, poetry and literature in the many pubs and cafes. It could be the Community Day with festival stage. Or it could be just the the Visual Arts trail.<\/p>\n

Phizzfest is run entirely by volunteers with support from grant authorities, the generous sponsorship of local businesses, and a wealth of artistic contributions. Impressively and unlike other similar festivals, they have a nice and usable website and even a downloadable PDF programme at http:\/\/www.phizzfest.ie\/2012\/guide\/phizzfest_programme_2012.pdf<\/a> Every year the festival gets better and I w ould say it is one of the best if not even THE best urban village\/suburb festivals in Dublin.<\/p>\n

There is a mix of free and non-free festivals (with a (perceived) majority of non-free events) and I recommend that you check the programme and select the events that interest you. Some events require the booking of tickets. From now until Friday there are 68 events, so I will let you select yourself from that wide selection. (Just to repeat: Many events are not free.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nEvery year since 2002, the Irish Sand Sculpting Team “Duthain Dealbh” is creating a sand sculpture exhibition in the courtyard of Dublin Castle. The sand sculpting team has 7 days to create the sculptures out of 80 tonnes of sand and after that the sculptures will be on show for another month. The carving took place from 30 July – 05 Aug and the exhibition runs from 06 Aug-02 Sept. The sculptures are truly impressive and I strongly recommend that you have a look when you are in town. In its fifth year, Summer of Heritage (Wed 17 June – Sun 02 Sept). will again attract thousands of visitors to many of the top heritage sites in the county. This year the programme has been further expanded and features tours of the Seapoint Martello tower (a stunningly restored example of these 19th century defensive forts, built during the Napoleonic wars) and tours of the Celtic Oratory in D\u00fan Laoghaire. There will also be tours of Kill Abbey (one of the oldest churches in Dublin, dating back to the 10th century), walking tours of old Dundrum, taking in the Castle and St. Nahi\u2019s church; walking tours along \u2018The Metals\u2019 (a historic pathway that linked the quarry in Dalkey to the harbour in D\u00fan Laoghaire). The Phibsborough Community Arts Festival “Phizzfest” is a vibrant community arts festival which brings the little urban village of Phibsborough alive in the first week of September each year. It was established to develop an annual celebration of artistic life around Phibsborough, to highlight the rich diversity of culture and to provide a showcase for the local talent.<\/p>\n

The week long festival will offer a wide variety of events. It could be a play in the Pillar Room at the Mater Hospital, an arts exhibition at the Fire Station, a concert in All Saints Church, a tribal belly dancing workshop in the Scout Hall. It could be canoe polo on the Royal Canal, a classical recital at the library. It could be comedy, trad, rock, poetry and literature in the many pubs and cafes. It could be the Community Day with festival stage. Or it could be just the the Visual Arts trail.<\/p>\n

Phizzfest is run entirely by volunteers with support from grant authorities, the generous sponsorship of local businesses, and a wealth of artistic contributions. Impressively and unlike other similar festivals, they have a nice and usable website and even a downloadable PDF programme at http:\/\/www.phizzfest.ie\/2012\/guide\/phizzfest_programme_2012.pdf<\/a> Every year the festival gets better and I w ould say it is one of the best if not even THE best urban village\/suburb festivals in Dublin.<\/p>\n

There is a mix of free and non-free festivals (with a (perceived) majority of non-free events) and I recommend that you check the programme and select the events that interest you. Some events require the booking of tickets. From now until Friday there are 68 events, so I will let you select yourself from that wide selection. (Just to repeat: Many events are not free.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This is your last chance to the Sand Sculptures:
\nEvery year since 2002, the Irish Sand Sculpting Team “Duthain Dealbh” is creating a sand sculpture exhibition in the courtyard of Dublin Castle. The sand sculpting team has 7 days to create the sculptures out of 80 tonnes of sand and after that the sculptures will be on show for another month. The carving took place from 30 July – 05 Aug and the exhibition runs from 06 Aug-02 Sept. The sculptures are truly impressive and I strongly recommend that you have a look when you are in town. If my memory is right, in previous years four sculptures were created, but this year the team seems to have lost a member and will create therefore three sculptures. “Bright Spark” is the title of the exhibition and it is inspired by the innovations of Irish scientists<\/span>. http:\/\/www.irish-sand.com<\/a><\/p>\n

D\u00fan Laoghaire Rathdown County Council will run their \u2018Summer of Heritage\u2019 programme again this year throughout the summer. In its fifth year, Summer of Heritage (Wed 17 June – Sun 02 Sept). will again attract thousands of visitors to many of the top heritage sites in the county. This year the programme has been further expanded and features tours of the Seapoint Martello tower (a stunningly restored example of these 19th century defensive forts, built during the Napoleonic wars) and tours of the Celtic Oratory in D\u00fan Laoghaire. There will also be tours of Kill Abbey (one of the oldest churches in Dublin, dating back to the 10th century), walking tours of old Dundrum, taking in the Castle and St. Nahi\u2019s church; walking tours along \u2018The Metals\u2019 (a historic pathway that linked the quarry in Dalkey to the harbour in D\u00fan Laoghaire). Carrickbrennan graveyard (resting place of many sailors lost in maritime disasters since the 17th century). features and so does the D\u00fan Laoghaire Memorials Tour, tours of the Obelisk in Stillorgan and Deansgrange Cemetry. All of the tours will be conducted by qualified guides and admission is free. Tours will take place from 27 June – 02 September on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The Dun Laoghaire Harbour Swim, which is part of the Open Sea Race series, will take place this weekend. The distance is 1800m and the water temperature is a COLD 10-15 degrees. The Phibsborough Community Arts Festival “Phizzfest” is a vibrant community arts festival which brings the little urban village of Phibsborough alive in the first week of September each year. It was established to develop an annual celebration of artistic life around Phibsborough, to highlight the rich diversity of culture and to provide a showcase for the local talent.<\/p>\n

The week long festival will offer a wide variety of events. It could be a play in the Pillar Room at the Mater Hospital, an arts exhibition at the Fire Station, a concert in All Saints Church, a tribal belly dancing workshop in the Scout Hall. It could be canoe polo on the Royal Canal, a classical recital at the library. It could be comedy, trad, rock, poetry and literature in the many pubs and cafes. It could be the Community Day with festival stage. Or it could be just the the Visual Arts trail.<\/p>\n

Phizzfest is run entirely by volunteers with support from grant authorities, the generous sponsorship of local businesses, and a wealth of artistic contributions. Impressively and unlike other similar festivals, they have a nice and usable website and even a downloadable PDF programme at http:\/\/www.phizzfest.ie\/2012\/guide\/phizzfest_programme_2012.pdf<\/a> Every year the festival gets better and I w ould say it is one of the best if not even THE best urban village\/suburb festivals in Dublin.<\/p>\n

There is a mix of free and non-free festivals (with a (perceived) majority of non-free events) and I recommend that you check the programme and select the events that interest you. Some events require the booking of tickets. From now until Friday there are 68 events, so I will let you select yourself from that wide selection. (Just to repeat: Many events are not free.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This regular open-mic literary event is held on the first Monday of every month and anyone can come along to read aloud one or more of your favourite pieces from literature at the event or you can even request that someone else reads your favourite piece, if you don\u2019t want to. The literary pieces don\u2019t have to be in English or in Irish. Recently an extract from Dante\u2019s \u2018Inferno\u2019 was read in the original Italian and some piece from Lorca was first read in Spanish and then translated into English. The Phibsborough Community Arts Festival “Phizzfest” is a vibrant community arts festival which brings the little urban village of Phibsborough alive in the first week of September each year. It was established to develop an annual celebration of artistic life around Phibsborough, to highlight the rich diversity of culture and to provide a showcase for the local talent.<\/p>\n

The week long festival will offer a wide variety of events. It could be a play in the Pillar Room at the Mater Hospital, an arts exhibition at the Fire Station, a concert in All Saints Church, a tribal belly dancing workshop in the Scout Hall. It could be canoe polo on the Royal Canal, a classical recital at the library. It could be comedy, trad, rock, poetry and literature in the many pubs and cafes. It could be the Community Day with festival stage. Or it could be just the the Visual Arts trail.<\/p>\n

Phizzfest is run entirely by volunteers with support from grant authorities, the generous sponsorship of local businesses, and a wealth of artistic contributions. Impressively and unlike other similar festivals, they have a nice and usable website and even a downloadable PDF programme at http:\/\/www.phizzfest.ie\/2012\/guide\/phizzfest_programme_2012.pdf<\/a> Every year the festival gets better and I w ould say it is one of the best if not even THE best urban village\/suburb festivals in Dublin.<\/p>\n

There is a mix of free and non-free festivals (with a (perceived) majority of non-free events) and I recommend that you check the programme and select the events that interest you. Some events require the booking of tickets. From now until Friday there are 68 events, so I will let you select yourself from that wide selection. Come to the talk by Professor Paul Chaikin, New York University on “Experimental Geometry: Experiments with Candies, Dice and Colloids.” in teh Science Gallery.<\/p>\n

Packing problems (how densely objects can fill a volume) are among the most ancient and persistent problems in mathematics and science. The oldest of these is the Kepler (1611) conjecture, which states that the most efficient way to pack spheres, leaving as few gaps as possible, happens to be the way that greengrocers stack oranges. More recently there has been intense interest in the packing of non-spherical shapes such as ellipsoids. By pouring M&M\u2019s(c) Candies into a container, Professor Chaikin and his team have shown that randomly packed ellipsoids can pack more efficiently than spheres.<\/p>\n

This talk is part of the International Workshop on Packing Problems that takes place in the School of Physics, Trinity College, from 02-05 September (www.packingproblems.com).<\/p>\n

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Dublin Fashion Festival (06-09 Sept) is part of the programme of events organized by Dublin Business Improvement District (BID) and is there to highlight the fashion and style available in stores, hotels, restaurants and bars throughout Dublin city centre. The job o f the Dublin Business Improvement District is to help increasing the business for shops in Dublin, so it is in their interest ot get people to come tot the city and then to go into shops and buy there.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, you will see that the Dublin Fashion Festival is not a festival in the typical sense with lots of festival events throughout the day and night in one or a few central locations. Instead it is a number of events that are just meant to give you an added reason to come to town. Nothing wrong with that, but don’t expect too much from the “Dublin Fashion Festival”.<\/p>\n

The Phibsborough Community Arts Festival “Phizzfest” is a vibrant community arts festival which brings the little urban village of Phibsborough alive in the first week of September each year. It was established to develop an annual celebration of artistic life around Phibsborough, to highlight the rich diversity of culture and to provide a showcase for the local talent.<\/p>\n

The week long festival will offer a wide variety of events. It could be a play in the Pillar Room at the Mater Hospital, an arts exhibition at the Fire Station, a concert in All Saints Church, a tribal belly dancing workshop in the Scout Hall. It could be canoe polo on the Royal Canal, a classical recital at the library. It could be comedy, trad, rock, poetry and literature in the many pubs and cafes. It could be the Community Day with festival stage. Or it could be just the the Visual Arts trail.<\/p>\n

Phizzfest is run entirely by volunteers with support from grant authorities, the generous sponsorship of local businesses, and a wealth of artistic contributions. Impressively and unlike other similar festivals, they have a nice and usable website and even a downloadable PDF programme at http:\/\/www.phizzfest.ie\/2012\/guide\/phizzfest_programme_2012.pdf<\/a> Every year the festival gets better and I w ould say it is one of the best if not even THE best urban village\/suburb festivals in Dublin.<\/p>\n

There is a mix of free and non-free festivals (with a (perceived) majority of non-free events) and I recommend that you check the programme and select the events that interest you. Some events require the booking of tickets. From now until Friday there are 68 events, so I will let you select yourself from that wide selection. (Just to repeat: Many events are not free.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Dublin Fashion Festival (06-09 Sept) is part of the programme of events organized by Dublin Business Improvement District (BID) and is there to highlight the fashion and style available in stores, hotels, restaurants and bars throughout Dublin city centre. The job o f the Dublin Business Improvement District is to help increasing the business for shops in Dublin, so it is in their interest ot get people to come tot the city and then to go into shops and buy there.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, you will see that the Dublin Fashion Festival is not a festival in the typical sense with lots of festival events throughout the day and night in one or a few central locations. Instead it is a number of events that are just meant to give you an added reason to come to town. Nothing wrong with that, but don’t expect too much from the “Dublin Fashion Festival”.<\/p>\n

A number of fashion related events will take place in shops and pubs\/bars and there will be a few central fashion shows.<\/p>\n

The Phibsborough Community Arts Festival “Phizzfest” is a vibrant community arts festival which brings the little urban village of Phibsborough alive in the first week of September each year. It was established to develop an annual celebration of artistic life around Phibsborough, to highlight the rich diversity of culture and to provide a showcase for the local talent.<\/p>\n

The week long festival will offer a wide variety of events. It could be a play in the Pillar Room at the Mater Hospital, an arts exhibition at the Fire Station, a concert in All Saints Church, a tribal belly dancing workshop in the Scout Hall. It could be canoe polo on the Royal Canal, a classical recital at the library. It could be comedy, trad, rock, poetry and literature in the many pubs and cafes. It could be the Community Day with festival stage. Or it could be just the the Visual Arts trail.<\/p>\n

Phizzfest is run entirely by volunteers with support from grant authorities, the generous sponsorship of local businesses, and a wealth of artistic contributions. Impressively and unlike other similar festivals, they have a nice and usable website and even a downloadable PDF programme at http:\/\/www.phizzfest.ie\/2012\/guide\/phizzfest_programme_2012.pdf<\/a> Every year the festival gets better and I w ould say it is one of the best if not even THE best urban village\/suburb festivals in Dublin.<\/p>\n

There is a mix of free and non-free festivals (with a (perceived) majority of non-free events) and I recommend that you check the programme and select the events that interest you. Some events require the booking of tickets. From now until Friday there are 68 events, so I will let you select yourself from that wide selection. (Just to repeat: Many events are not free.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Hack The City exhibition in the Science Gallery is coming to an end and as the final event, a Closing Feast will take place on Grand Canal Square in cooperation with Street Feast, a not-for-profit organisation that runs a yearly Street Feast event to get neighbours to share lunch at a type of street party and as a platform for communities to share experiences and enhance the social bonds necessary for community cohesion and resilience.<\/p>\n

Government will upgrade EVERY street to motorway<\/strong><\/p>\n

After reading that headline, I am sure you think I lost it, because no government could be so idotic to come up with the idea to turn every street into a motorway, right? Well, you are right, it is a stupid idea. But imagine if you wanted to run a haulage company and you lived on Valentia Island in Co. Kerry. You would probably expect that a motorway would be built to your front door. No? You would still think that is nonsensical? Hmmm, but then WHY would anyone pbuild high-bandwidth broadband links to the most remote places of Ireland. Isn’t that the same as building motorways to Valentia Island?<\/p>\n

On Thursda, the Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte said the Government is committed to providing broadband speeds of at least 30 Megabit\/s to every citizen in the State by 2015. And YOU will pay EUR 175mio for that! I am sure you agree that this plan is as nonsensical as upgrading all streets in Ireland to motorways! Ireland is basically a rural country where even in large population centres you have worse infrastructure than in many other European countries. And this “broadband for all” plan does not make sense in the slightest.<\/p>\n

I could also mention that there is currently NO legal or lawful use for a bandwidth of 30 Megabit\/s for the majority of users. Companies often have less than 30 Megabit\/s but the remote farmer who lives on his own behind a hill somewhere and hardly ever uses the Internet, he now has to get 30 Megabit\/s too! And you and I are paying! What a stupid idea!<\/p>\n

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement.
