Hi all!<\/a><\/p>\n

The quiet first two weekends in August are over and what a cracking two weekends to follow! This weekend will be massive and next weekend will be big as well and inbetween we have the Heritage Week, which is full of events. The headline events (that’s what I call the events that easily make the headlines ;-) ) are really big and the great thing is that there is something for everybody: Arts, Music, Outdoors, Indoors and even Motor Racing in our lovely Phoenix Park. Some events are relatively well advertised, but many are lesser known. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) gets them all out in the open and EVERYONE benefits from it! :-)<\/a> [ad] <\/p>\n

Since April I try to capture one or two events every weekend and if you like the pictures, feel free to share them with your Facebook friends.<\/p>\n

This week I had to work extra hard on this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). not only because there are soo many free events taking place, but also because I will have to send it out earlier this week because we (Kevin Doyle + The Elvis The Way It Was Orchestra + Valley Gospel Singers) will perform in the Olympia this evening. I am not a mad Elvis fan, but by a pure coincidence I got a present of an Elvis tape when I was 9 years of age and I always liked the music. When a few years ago I had the chance to sing in the Gospel Backing choir of Ireland’s best Elvis Tribute Artist, Kevin Doyle, I said yes without hesitation and tonight we will be about 20 people on stage performing in front of around 1,000 people in the Olympia. The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.<\/a><\/p>\n

Searching for a fitting or interesting quote or – even better – video clip is sometimes quite time consuming and after years of including the “Feel Good Slot” in the weekly Dublin Event Guide, the really good video clips are at times getting scarce. If you come across something that is in the spirit of this section, I invite you to send it to me!<\/a><\/p>\n

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down<\/em><\/p>\n

I guess the weekend couldn’t be much busier. ;-) With the last two weekends relatively quiet, the flood gates have opened and now we have to juggle the events if we want to go to as many as possible. I like music and art and culture and motor racing and if you only had a quick look further down you see my problem! …all these events are on offer this weekend.<\/a><\/p>\n

So I need to make decisions or cut the visits short. Not sure yet how it will turn out, but I will definitely try to catch a bit of the Jack of Diamond Rhythm & Roots Festival on Saturday and of the Ukulele Hooley in Dun Laoghaire on Sunday. In addition I would like to fit a bit of Phoenix Park Motor Racing in, maybe on Sunday morning. And want to go to the People’s Art event, the art exhibition around St. Stephen’s Green. Anything else? Oh, yes, the Fireworks in Dun Laoghaire on Saturday evening. Hmmm, I have doubts that without being able to bi-locate all this works, but I will try!<\/a><\/p>\n

Next week is Heritage Week and there are hundreds of events taking place. I will not select some for you because there are just too many to choose from. Have a look through this Event Guide where I have included some of the Heritage Week events and then check the website and make your choice from that. In the Dublin News I am listing my three favourites, maybe that will help you!?<\/a><\/p>\n

Down with Jazz Festival<\/h2>\n

Just before sending this week’s Dublin Event Guide, I found out that Down with Jazz is booked out for all three days. I am not surprised because it sounds like a great event. The festival is free, but because space on Meeting House Square is limited, it was necessary to give out tickets.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1934 a campaign against Jazz music in Ireland was busy fighting against this terrible foreign noise and the organisers of this event, the Improvised Music Company, cleverly picked it up as a theme for their festival. “Down with Jazz” is a 3-day Jazz Festival on Meeting House Square in Temple Bar and lots of well known Jazz bands and performers will be there.<\/a><\/p>\n

The line-up on Friday is The Swoo-Beh Project, Freefall, 3G, Jaime Nancy & The Blue Boys, Oko
On Sat (from 19:30) the performers are Leafzang, Phisqa, Freefall, Christine Tobin, Umbra, Mixtapes from the Underground.
And on Sun (14:00-20:00): Rhombus, Redivider, Buckley Standard Time, Sweeney’s Jazzmen, Max Zazka’s Groove, Hot House Big Band.<\/p>\n

Heritage Week<\/h2>\n
\n

Heritage Week takes place from 18-26 Aug and it comes with a HUGE amount of interesting events. If I counted right, then the Dublin City events alone reach the mad number of 400! And that doesn’t include South Dublin, North Dublin, Dun Laoghaire etc. Nearly all events are free, but you can imagine that it is impossible to include them all here in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). I included some interesting ones, but you will have to spend a bit of time on the Heritage Week website at http:\/\/www.heritageweek.ie<\/a> to check the events.<\/p>\n

As always the Libraries are great contributors to events like this and have an extensive programme with a good few events on http:\/\/www.dublincity.ie\/RecreationandCulture\/libraries\/Events\/Pages\/heritage_2012_main_page.aspx<\/a> When you search through the events, watch out for the day\/time. There are many weekday & middle of the day events, which are great for parents with kids but not that suitable for people with jobs. If you asked me to recommend a small number of events, then I would suggest that you go the Guided Tour in the Freemason’s Hall (midday during week and weekend), the Cemetery Tour in Glasnevin (Sat) and the Royal College of Physicians Open Day (Tuesday). Ah, now I have seen everything! What a mad idea! The journal.ie has reported that Linge rie Football will come to Dublin and I have no idea why anybody would find that more attractive than fully dressed American Football. Maybe people need to get out a bit more? Ohh AND I have no idea why women would be interested in playing it, unless it pays really really well. Pub Closing problem in Galway<\/h2>\n

It seems that new rules either have been implemented in Galway or are now enforced. After having been ignored previously. In the past the pub and club closing time was 02:00 and now it has been brought forward to 01:00. One hour less going out time is not the biggest problem, people could possibly go out earlier to compensate for it, but the aspect that I find worrying is how the authorities constantly want to interfere. Let’s face it one hour more or less will not make a significant difference in the amount of alcohol that is consumed or in the amount of problem people will cause when they go home. If the authorites were consequent, they would have to make alcohol illegal, but we know that that will a) not happen and b) would never work. Let’s hope this doesn’t spread to Dublin. A petition is underway in Galway to reverse the earlier closing. http:\/\/www.petitionbuzz.com\/petitions\/closeearlylosejobs<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The National Museum is doing a really great job in running lots of free events in their three Dublin branches for children and adults and I regularly list them here individually. Due to the large amount of other events, I won’t be able to list them one by one as there are even more events on in the museums for Heritage Week. During this year\u2019s National Heritage Week the RCPI is hosting this award-winning exhibition exploring historical depictions of disabilities in medical literature and contemporary responses from disabled people, to look at society\u2019s changing attitudes to disability.
The exhibition explores a group of rare portraits from the 17th to the 19th centuries, held by the Royal College of Physicians in London. The portraits depict disabled men and women of all ages and walks of life, many of whom earned a living exhibiting themselves to the public.
The exhibition uncovers the extraordinary hidden histories behind the portraits and looks at their impact today through contemporary responses from disabled people. 27 disabled participants from across the UK were invited to have their photographic portraits taken and be filmed. Their responses form an important part of the exhibition.<\/p>\n

Art at The Ivy House is presenting “Scraping off the Past”, the first Dublin solo exhibition by Polish artist Ewa Fornal. Ewa works in Ireland and explores in her work weather, location and time through responding directly to her environment.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is about exploring how the past has left its mark, smoke stained walls, blistered paint, the cardboard box in the doorway, the phone number on a toilet wall – all about the trace, the marks that still exist beneath the past onion-like layers. The materials she works with have been exposed to many years of wind, sunlight, extreme cold and rain.<\/a><\/p>\n

People’s Art Exhibition<\/h2>\n

Four times this year the \u201cPeople\u2019s Art 2012″ exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails\/fence of St. Stephen\u2019s Green. If you want to exhibit at one of the events in the future, check the website for cost and conditions. Visiting the People\u2019s Art Exhibition is free. Specific start and end times are not defined, but exhibition space has to be occupied by 11:00, so 11:00 is the latest start time. The event runs from Friday until Sunday, but Sat+Sun will most likely be the main days. The June exhibition is the second this year and you see a wide range of paintings and other \u201changable\u201d art for sale.<\/a><\/p>\n

People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art\/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen\u2019s Green. Definitely recommended!<\/a><\/div>\n

The Ferocious Mingle Market takes place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Caf\u00e9 and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.<\/a><\/p>\n

This workshop connects us to our own unique voice and reminds us of how it feels to express ourselves through singing. The National Heritage Week is full of amazing and interesting events. There are medieval fairs, night time bat walks, classical music, poetry, theatre, traditional music, storytelling, historical re-enactments, local history walks and talks, maritime and coastal events, food fairs, traditional skills workshops and archaeological digs. There\u2019s something for everyone and most events are free.<\/a><\/p>\n

Whether it is nature and wildlife, folklore, or built heritage, National Heritage Week aims to deliver messages and events that are positive, engaging and relevant in people\u2019s day to day lives. Any person or organisation can actively take part in the Week and organise an event which educates people and promotes an aspect of Ireland’s Heritage.<\/a><\/p>\n

Many attractions across Dublin are hosting Heritage Week events across the National Heritage Week such as National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts and History, National Museum of Ireland – Natural History, Natural Museum of Ireland – Archeology, Chester Beatty Library, National Botanic Gardens.<\/a><\/p>\n

The National Heritage Weeks will run from Sat 18 Aug until Sun 26 Aug. I will include a number of events here, but it is just not possible to include all events. There are about 400 (!!) events in the Dublin City area only! So you have to check the website for all details. <\/a><\/div>\n

Phoenix Park Motor Races<\/h2>\n

A fascinating event is taking place this weekend. On Sat and Sun the Phoenix Park Motor Races take place and celebrate their 110 years of history. If you have never heard of the Phoenix Park Motor Races, this might be because it has been a bit of an unreliable event in recent years, with the races having been cancelled in 2010 and 2011. But this year they are back for definite to celebrate also the 350th anniversary of Phoenix Park. In the 1990s around 100,000 people attended and tens of thousands are expected again this year.
I was at the races in 2009 and it was odd to see historic and modern racing cars race in a park like Phoenix Park, but it was a good event with lots of cars taking part and a buzzing paddock in the car park of Farmleigh House.<\/p>\n

The racing car classes competing in the Park this year are:
Formula Ford F2000, Formula Libre, Formula Vee, Formula Sheane, Historic Racing Cars, Fiat Abarth, Fiat Punto & Uno Strykers, Irish Touring Cars, GT racing class and FF1600. There will also be a sprint for Pre \u201955 racing cars.<\/p>\n

In addition to the races, there will be demonstration runs for Irish Kit Cars, AC Cobras, Ferraris. The Ginetta Junior Ireland racing class (a racing class for 14-17 year old competitors) will also be there. The RSA Shuttle and Roll-over Simulator will be at the event as well.<\/a><\/p>\n

The “main” event will be the Dublin Grand Prix, featuring Historic Formula Ford 2000 cars. It will take place from 14:05 or from 14:30 on Sunday. The timetable is not entirely clear on that. I did put the word “main” in ” ” because all events\/races\/parades are scheduled to run for the same amount of time as the “main” event. Every sub-event will run for a duration of just 30 minutes. So in essence they are all more or less equal events. Admission to the event is free and you have full and free access to the paddock in Farmleigh House, so you can get very close to the cars and drivers. The race course is a triangle close to the Castleknock end of the park, so it is a long distance (i.e. long walk!) from the City side entrance of the park.<\/a><\/p>\n

Because of the recent heavy rain, there will be no official visitor parking facilities in Phoenix Park and many streets and park gates will be closed, so expect a bit of mayhem if you come by car. There will, however, be a free shuttle bus from Heuston station for everyone with a valid Luas ticket. I checked with the nice people at Luas and they stressed that all they need to see is a valid Luas ticket. So I guess you can buy a ticket on the day, but don’t need to use the Luas \u2026and the ticket doesn’t have to have a certain minimum value. The shuttle bus will be available from 11:00-18:00 on Sat+Sun. It will leave at Parkgate Street every 15 minutes. (http:\/\/www.luas.ie\/phoenix-park-races.html<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Every year since 2002, the Irish Sand Sculpting Team “Duthain Dealbh” is creating a sand sculpture exhibition in the courtyard of Dublin Castle. The sand sculpting team has 7 days to create the sculptures out of 80 tonnes of sand and after that the sculptures will be on show for another month. The carving took place from 30 July – 05 Aug and the exhibition runs from 06 Aug-02 Sept. The sculptures are truly impressive and I strongly recommend that you have a look when you are in town. If my memory is right, in previous years four sculptures were created, but this year the team seems to have lost a member and will create therefore three sculptures. “Bright Spark” is the title of the exhibition and it is inspired by the innovations of Irish scientists<\/span>. http:\/\/www.irish-sand.com<\/a><\/p>\n

Four times this year the \u201cPeople\u2019s Art 2012″ exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails\/fence of St. Stephen\u2019s Green. If you want to exhibit at one of the events in the future, check the website for cost and conditions. Visiting the People\u2019s Art Exhibition is free. Specific start and end times are not defined, but exhibition space has to be occupied by 11:00, so 11:00 is the latest start time. The event runs from Friday until Sunday, but Sat+Sun will most likely be the main days. The June exhibition is the second this year and you see a wide range of paintings and other \u201changable\u201d art for sale.<\/a><\/p>\n

People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art\/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen\u2019s Green. Definitely recommended!<\/a><\/div>\n

This will be the third year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From June until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com invites to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based. All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. Bad news from the Dublin City Liffey Swim: The 92nd Liffey Swim will take this weekend, but the route has changed and will turn the Liffey Swim into a less attractive event with less historic significance.
The First Liffey swim took place in 1920 and 1923 Jack B. Yeats painted the well known picture (http:\/\/www.bertc.com\/subtwo\/g108\/yeats18.htm<\/a>) of the Liffey Swim, which is now in the National Gallery. But imagine if not lots of people and the nice facades of the City Quays would line the Liffey, but hardly anybody would watch it and the skyline left and right is sterile office blocks!?
For 92 years the Liffey Swim started at Watling Bridge (near the Guinness Brewery) and went to Customs House. This year, however, the start is at Customs House and the finish is far out at the East Link Bridge. (Watch out for wrong information in other publications! The start is at Customs House NOT at Watling Bridge.)<\/p>\n

The Men’s Race will start at 11:15 and the Ladies’ Race will start at 12:15. The distance is shorter this year with approx. 1,500m.<\/a><\/div>\n

A fascinating event is taking place this weekend. On Sat and Sun the Phoenix Park Motor Races take place and celebrate their 110 years of history. If you have never heard of the Phoenix Park Motor Races, this might be because it has been a bit of an unreliable event in recent years, with the races having been cancelled in 2010 and 2011. But this year they are back for definite to celebrate also the 350th anniversary of Phoenix Park. In the 1990s around 100,000 people attended and tens of thousands are expected again this year.
I was at the races in 2009 and it was odd to see historic and modern racing cars race in a park like Phoenix Park, but it was a good event with lots of cars taking part and a buzzing paddock in the car park of Farmleigh House.<\/p>\n

The racing car classes competing in the Park this year are:
Formula Ford F2000, Formula Libre, Formula Vee, Formula Sheane, Historic Racing Cars, Fiat Abarth, Fiat Punto & Uno Strykers, Irish Touring Cars, GT racing class and FF1600. There will also be a sprint for Pre \u201955 racing cars.<\/p>\n

In addition to the races, there will be demonstration runs for Irish Kit Cars, AC Cobras, Ferraris. The Ginetta Junior Ireland racing class (a racing class for 14-17 year old competitors) will also be there. The RSA Shuttle and Roll-over Simulator will be at the event as well.<\/a><\/p>\n

The “main” event will be the Dublin Grand Prix, featuring Historic Formula Ford 2000 cars. It will take place from 14:05 or from 14:30 on Sunday. The timetable is not entirely clear on that. I did put the word “main” in ” ” because all events\/races\/parades are scheduled to run for the same amount of time as the “main” event. Every sub-event will run for a duration of just 30 minutes. So in essence they are all more or less equal events. Admission to the event is free and you have full and free access to the paddock in Farmleigh House, so you can get very close to the cars and drivers. The race course is a triangle close to the Castleknock end of the park, so it is a long distance (i.e. long walk!) from the City side entrance of the park.<\/a><\/p>\n

Because of the recent heavy rain, there will be no official visitor parking facilities in Phoenix Park and many streets and park gates will be closed, so expect a bit of mayhem if you come by car. There will, however, be a free shuttle bus from Heuston station for everyone with a valid Luas ticket. I checked with the nice people at Luas and they stressed that all they need to see is a valid Luas ticket. So I guess you can buy a ticket on the day, but don’t need to use the Luas \u2026and the ticket doesn’t have to have a certain minimum value. The shuttle bus will be available from 11:00-18:00 on Sat+Sun. It will leave at Parkgate Street every 15 minutes. (http:\/\/www.luas.ie\/phoenix-park-races.html<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Every year since 2002, the Irish Sand Sculpting Team “Duthain Dealbh” is creating a sand sculpture exhibition in the courtyard of Dublin Castle. The sand sculpting team has 7 days to create the sculptures out of 80 tonnes of sand and after that the sculptures will be on show for another month. The carving took place from 30 July – 05 Aug and the exhibition runs from 06 Aug-02 Sept. The sculptures are truly impressive and I strongly recommend that you have a look when you are in town. If my memory is right, in previous years four sculptures were created, but this year the team seems to have lost a member and will create therefore three sculptures. “Bright Spark” is the title of the exhibition and it is inspired by the innovations of Irish scientists<\/span>. http:\/\/www.irish-sand.com<\/a><\/p>\n

People’s Art Exhibition<\/h2>\n

Four times this year the \u201cPeople\u2019s Art 2012″ exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails\/fence of St. Stephen\u2019s Green. If you want to exhibit at one of the events in the future, check the website for cost and conditions. Visiting the People\u2019s Art Exhibition is free. Specific start and end times are not defined, but exhibition space has to be occupied by 11:00, so 11:00 is the latest start time. The event runs from Friday until Sunday, but Sat+Sun will most likely be the main days. The June exhibition is the second this year and you see a wide range of paintings and other \u201changable\u201d art for sale.<\/a><\/p>\n

People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching\/drawing yourself. As part of National Heritage Week, there will be a “Fairytale Day at the Enchanted Wood” event for children at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre. The Chairman of Friends of the Earth International, Nnimmo Bassey, will be in Dublin on Monday to talk about “keeping the oil in the soil and the coal in the hole” and about Community Rights. He is an environmental activist and is best known for his organisation’s work to prevent and reverse the negative impacts of Shell’s activities in Nigeria. In Dublin he will be joined on the panel by activists Pat O’Donnell from Shell to Sea and Leah Doherty from No Fracking Ireland. The evening will be chaired by Ois\u00edn Coghlan and the activists on the panel will share their experiences and reflections of protecting their communities from destruction by multinational energy corporations.

Film Maker Jake Murray and Maths Teacher Sean O’Brien will produce a series of video tutorials for LEaving Cert Maths students to help them through their exams and on Tuesday they are doing a first road test and provide in return for your particiaption a film and maths seminar. “At MathsHub we hope to provide an easily accessible, friendly and fun way of beginning to engage with mathematics. Rather than looking upon a lack of precedent as something scary, we should be encouraged to grow into the space afforded by these changes. There is a world of imagination, discipline, personal satisfaction and social interactions that can flourish from a genuine engagement with mathematics.
To this end we are creating a comprehensive set of video tutorials to help secondary school students through their exams. This night at the Exchange is our first recording session and we encourage members of the public to come down and engage with us and offer feedback and opinions. Dublin will be the final host port for the 2012 Tall Ships Races, an event that will see over 42 Tall Ships sail into the capital for a four day festival and celebration from 23-26th August 2012. Ships from Chile, Mexico, Argentina, the US, Italy and Norway will be here and will bring over 5000 participants.<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be lots of activities with free street entertainment, live music, parades, funfairs, treasure hunts, water sport activities, viewing opportunities on board of ships and lots more.<\/a><\/p>\n

A free family programme with nautical-themed workshops, an interactive sea orchestra, an open-air trapeze and circus sideshow and an amazing watersports programme in Grand Canal Dock will take place from 13:00-18:00.

Family History Workshops<\/h2>\n

A long list of Family History workshops will take place at the National Library in August. The workshops start at 13:00 and will last approximately 20 minutes. No booking required. Seats are on a first come, first served basis. Because there are so many and because they are soo short, you might have to plan well ahead, for that reason I list them all here, but won’t list them on every day they take place but only on Monday and Friday.<\/a><\/p>\n

Last minute update: <\/strong>Just before sending this Dublin Event Guide, I found out that this great event is booked out! No wonder. However I was able to get some tickets for the Friday night for a competition. So check the competition section!!<\/p>\n

In 1934 a campaign against Jazz music in Ireland was busy fighting against this terrible foreign noise and the organisers of this event<\/span>, the Improvised Music Company, cleverly picked it up as a theme for their festival. Down with Jazz” is a 3-day Jazz Festival on Meeting House Square in Temple Bar and it is all free (but ticketed).
The line-up on Friday is The Swoo<\/span><\/span>–Beh<\/span><\/span> Project, Freefall<\/span><\/span>, 3G, Jaime Nancy & The Blue Boys, Oko<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On Saturday (from 19:30) the performers are Leafzang<\/span><\/span>, Phisqa<\/span><\/span>, Freefall<\/span><\/span>, Christine Tobin, Umbra, Mixtapes<\/span><\/span> from the Underground.

A pleasant walk with moderate difficulty from Tibradden car park up onto DMW trail to summit of Fairy Castle passing a prehistoric tomb on the way. The walk continues up to summit of Fairy Castle at 537 Mtrs where you will get panoramic views of Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow, (bring your camera) The walk then descends down northwards to DMP viewing point before it continues on forest road toward Kilmashogue wood. Then ascend via Wicklow Way trail to join the Tibradden DMW again. The walk finishes back down to the car park. Distance: 11.5 km

Rose of Tralee<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes it is odd that the Rose of Tralee, the oh so outdated Irish “talent” and beauty show is on TV again in 2012. But don’t worry, I am not criticising anybody who likes it, but I guess it is a programme that holds a lot of nostalgia for many that grew up in Ireland, but if you didn’t grow up with it and are just a blow-in, then it is one of the oddest programmes you could imagine. Cultural disconnect maybe? Or maybe we blow-ins just don’t get it. :-) If you have never ever seen it, watch the Savage Eye version of the Rose of Tralee at http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=J4o99f2ErLo<\/a> and you will get in 1 minutes and 17 second a perfect and accurate condensed version of a TV programme that lasts for hours and hours over two nights on Monday and Tuesday evening. Ohh, and before you send me a mail complaining that I dare criticising Irish “culture” maybe ask yourself what it is that makes you defend the Rose of Tralee. Is it the event itself or is it the great memories you have when you think about your childhood when you were allowed to stay up late, maybe got some red lemonade and some other special treats? And another “Ohhh”: I grew up in a country where we have TV programmes where oddly dressed people “sing” lip synced to awful brass music, so I am NOT a good judge of good culture! ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Phew!! I got it completed! More than 170 events and that only includes a very very small number of the more than 400 Heritage Week events in the City Centre.
