Hi all!<\/p>\n

It seems not everybody is completely clear about the events in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). As the name suggests every single event – this week there are more than 130 – is free. So if you see something here, you know that you won’t have to pay for it. Sometimes donations are very much appreciated or even suggested and if you have money, feel free to help but if you don’t have money, then the entertainment was provided to you for no charge.<\/p>\n

No matter what your financial situation is, there is no justification to stay at home and to fell down. Get out, enjoy the things that others provide for you for free and mix with people. Talk to others, tell them what you can do or want to do, take the initiative and look for opportunities and the chnaces of you getting out of your current situation is significantly higher than if you stay at home and fell bad about the cards life dealt you.<\/p>\n

Did I say EVERY event is free? Hmmm, I am making an exception this week because it is an event I am very much involved with. Tickets sale are going strong and it could get tight, so don’t wait any longer if you want to hear me (and 20 other musicians and singers) supporting Kevin Doyle, Ireland’s best Elvit Presley Tribute Performer. On 17 August we will be in the Olympia Theatre for a gig to celebrate Elvis Presley’s 35th Anniversary and if you are interested or know somebody who might be interested tell them they can get tickets from ticketmaster or at the Olympia Box Office. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down<\/em><\/p>\n

This week is not overly busy, sure there are more than 130 free events, but in comparison to other weekends, there is less happening. The seconf week in August is still a traditional holiday week in people’s mind. Next weekend will be really busy and the weekend after that the Tall Ship Race will be in Dublin, so two big weekends ahead, I guess, this makes the slightly weaker weekend more stomachable. ;-)<\/p>\n

My suggestions for this weekend and week are:
\nDefinitely go to the Sand Sculpture exhibition in Dublin Castle when you are in town between now and the beginning of September. And definitely go to the Shakespeare in Iveagh Gardens performance of “The Tempest”, it will all be over on Sunday and you will regret it if you didn’t go. The weather is fine tonight (19:00) and might be ok tomorrow also (15:00).<\/p>\n

On Saturday you might want to have a look at the Nigerian Carnival in Phoenix Park as well. It sounds interesting and will be a relatively big and very different event. For Arts lovers, check out the Art for Art’s Sake Walking Tour, sounds interesting and I will try it out at some stage. If your interested in the zine-scene, then the 2nd Dublin Zine Fair is for you (Sat + Sun).<\/p>\n

The Northside Music Festival is in Ballymun on Saturday and in Finglas on Sunday and the Sunday event is a Family Day. And if Southside is more your thing, then go to the Movies in the Park in Marlay Park, especially if you have kids. Grown-ups, the Workman’s Summer Block Party is for you with music and markets on Sat+Sun.<\/p>\n

The Fusion Sunday market and the Port Tunnel Run with entertainment are two other interesting events.<\/p>\n

Did I say it is a quiet weekend? I am not sure anymore after putting this list together! :-)<\/p>\n

Shakespeare in Iveagh Gardens – Last Chance!<\/h2>\n

Free Shakespeare in Iveagh Gardens is continuing for just three more performances. Don’t miss out. Friday (tonight) at 19:00 and then Sat and Sun at 15:00 will be the last chance to see the Tempest. I will definitely be there on Saturday and hope the weather will be great and the crowds will be massive.
\nThe performances of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” take place on the big green in Iveagh Gardens (access from Harcourt Street) and are all unplugged and without lighting. Bring your blanket (and umbrella) and enjoy culture in its purest form.

Asgard sailing ship now in National Museum<\/h2>\n
\n

During the week the Asgard sailing ship was revealed as a new exhibition in the National Museum in Collins Barracks. The Asgard was built 1905 as a wedding gift for Irish writer Erskine Childers wife and in 1914 was used to bring guns (900 rifles and 29,000 rounds of ammunition) from Germany into Ireland for the Irish Volunteers. It was later turned into a training sailing ship and after 20 years (!!) of restoration and cost of EUR 1.3, it now can be viewed in the museum. Some of you might remember that the Asgard sunk, but that was the Asgard II, the replacement as the Irish sail training vessel. The exhibition in the National Museum is a permanent exhibition. http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/newspaper\/breaking\/2012\/0808\/breaking25.html<\/a> Maybe a reason to go to the National Museum again? Admission is free, so spend the next rainy day there! :-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Luas to be extended<\/h2>\n
\n

The oddity of two separate and non interconnected Luas lines will finally be removed when a complex link up will extend the Green Line from St. Stephen’s Green through the City Centre and then onwards to Broombridge near Cabra, where it will link up with the Maynooth commuter rail line. The extension will span over a distance of 6km and will cost EUR 370 mio. Unfortunately it will run not underground but through the streets of Dublin, which will impact bus, taxi and private car travel not only in the long and painful build period, but also after it has been built. All in all the development is a positive one, but Dawson Street, College Green, Marlborough Street and parts of O’Connell Street, Westmoreland Street and D’Olier Street will probably get blocked for all other traffic as a result. And can you imagine the mess for the next four years or so during the build? I would have preferred the underground option, but it definitely was too expensive. RDS National Crafts Competition & Student Art Awards Exhibition<\/h2>\n

The Ferocious Mingle Market takes place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Caf\u00e9 and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.<\/p>\n

The location of the new indoor market is 72 Thomas Street (between the Vicar St venue & Cafe Notto) an opening hours are 11:00-18:00. There is also a Caf\u00e9, the Oscar Verne Caf\u00e9, open for business at the market.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Every year since 2002, the Irish Sand Scultping Team “Duthain Dealbh” is creating a sand sculpture exhibition in the courtyard of Dublin Castle. The sand sculpting team has 7 days to create the sculptures out of 80 tonnes of sand and after that the sculptures will be on show for another month. The carving takes place from 30 July – 05 Aug and the exhibition runs from 06 Aug-02 Sept. The sculptures are truly impressive and I strongly recommend that you have a look when you are in town. This will be the third year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From June until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com invites to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based. All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. \nThe Theatre Company Fortune’s Fool will perform William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” in Iveagh Gardens from Fri 03 Aug – Sun 12 Aug. Admission is free. The performance is unplugged with no lights and effects and microphones, which gives the whole performance a great atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Bright Sparks – Sand Sculptures<\/h2>\n

Every year since 2002, the Irish Sand Scultping Team “Duthain Dealbh” is creating a sand sculpture exhibition in the courtyard of Dublin Castle. The sand sculpting team has 7 days to create the sculptures out of 80 tonnes of sand and after that the sculptures will be on show for another month. The carving takes place from 30 July – 05 Aug and the exhibition runs from 06 Aug-02 Sept. The sculptures are truly impressive and I strongly recommend that you have a look when you are in town. If my memory is right, in previous years four sculptures were created, but this year the team seems to have lost a member and will create therfore three sculptures. “Bright Spark” is the title of the exhibition and it is inspired by the innovations of Irish scientists<\/span>. http:\/\/www.irish-sand.com<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dublin Port Tunnel Run 2012 will take place on Sunday. It will start at 10:00 at the Point Village. Participation is not free (EUR 30 fee plus a suggested donation of EUR 25 to Focus Ireland). The event is organised by Focus Ireland and the free element is the event programme around the run. There will be magicians, cheerleaders, ballon modelling, face painting and there will be music acts (including the Dublin Gospel Choir). The run is a 10km run and runners, walkers and joggers are welcome. On 16 Aug the Dublin says Hello! initiative wants you to be a little nicer, a little friendlier and a little more social when you are out in town. This three-day jazz festival, called “Down with Jazz”, has picked the name in memory of an anti-jazz campaign in 1934 in Ireland and they describe the events from back then on their website. But it is anything else but Anti-Jazz, instead you have an opportunity to listen to great Jazz music for three days and all is absolutely free. The line up is on Friday: Swooh Beh, Phisqa, 3G, Jaime Nancy & The Blue Boys and Oko. On Saturday you will hear Leafzang, Freefall, Chrstine Tobin, Umbra, Mixtapes from the Underground. Olympic Racism!?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I know, I know, Olympia is an all-happy get together of lots of gifted and well trained athletes who are all best friends and don’t have any ill feelings towards each other. And racism has no place at the Olympic Games. Yes. that is true…in theory! But in reality it looks interestingly different. Oddly, though, it seems that the bigger problem is on the outside not in the Olympic Village.<\/p>\n

“Racism” is an odd thing. It is defined “as actions, practices, or beliefs that reflect the racial worldview: the ideology that humans are divided into separate and exclusive biological entities called “races<\/span>“. This ideology entails the belief that members of a race share a set of characteristic traits, abilities, or qualities, that traits of personality, intellect, morality, and other cultural behavioral characteristics are inherited, and that this inheritance means that races can be ranked as innately superior or inferior to others.” (Wikipedia). Now, what does “race” really mean. Actually I would expand the term and would include discriminatory behaviors and beliefs based on cultural, national or religious stereotypes.<\/p>\n

Does that mean someobody is possibly racist if he\/she supports their Olympic Team and is of the opinion that they are superior than an Olympic Team (or even an individual athlete) other countries. Yep! A belief that this is the case is enough! How odd is that? Does that mean we are all incurable racists? Well, some belief that is the case and that we therefore should look at the whole discrimination\/racism debate. Interesting that the nationalisitic emotions that sports events (Euro 2012, Olympia 2012, etc) create are in total contradiction to the goal of the events. And when people think tunr out their national pride in a discriminatory (“We are superior!”) type of way, have they thought about how we all became nationals of a certain country? By TOTAL coincidence without ANY interaction or influence on your part? An interesting topic when you start thinking about it. http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Racism<\/a><\/p>\n

Public support for Sean Quinn – How odd is that?<\/strong><\/p>\n
