Hurray, another bank holiday weekend. I love these Mondays off and would take a few more if I could. :-) Traditionally there is not too much happening in Dublin on the August bank holiday, but this year it is busy enough, so have a look through this long newsletter and find a few events that appeal to you. I will be in Co Clare this weekend to celebrate Lindsay and Mary’s YES to each other. Congrats! So you have Dublin to yourself. :-) A number of events are happening that I would definitely go to, like the Zombie walk and the fireworks in Bray and the Americana and Roots Festival in Greystones, but I haven’t found a way to be in two places at the same time, so I will let you explore all these things and maybe tell me about it if you feel like it. Most of you know that I spent many hours writing and researching this weekly newsletter\/e-zine, but I enjoy lots of other things as well and one of them is singing in an Elvis Tribute Band. Not as Elvis, I hasten to add, but just in the backing choir. In two weeks time on 17 August we will be in the Olympia Theatre for a gig and tickets are selling like mad. It is still 2 weeks and more than 400 tickets have been sold, I was told. It is Elvis Presley’s 35th Anniversary and if you are interested or know somebody who might be interested in Elvis Presley tell them about it. By the looks of it, this gig will sell out. Because of the cost we have to pay, it can’t be free, but you will have a 22 people band and choir performing on stage for you and all is fronted by Kevin Doyle, the best Elvis Tribute performer. Shakespeare in Iveagh Gardens<\/h2>\n
\n

Free Shakespeare In The Park will be back! Last year it was Romeo & Juliet and I absolutely loved the performance and this year it is “The Tempest” by Shakespeare. Fortune’s Fool Productions are the production company behind it. This is not the same company as last year, but the key people are still the same. The performances take place on the big green in Iveagh Gardens (access from Harcourt Street) and are all unplugged and without lighting. Bring your blanket (and umbrella) and enjoy culture in its purest form.<\/p>\n

Starring Tim Casey as Prospero, Roisin O\u2019Donovan as Miranda and Val O\u2019Donnell as Alonso and directed by Stephanie Courtney, I am convinced that they will impress again. I will definitely go next week and am already looking forward to it.<\/p>\n

New Guidelines for Street Performers<\/h2>\n
\n

A code for Street performers and Buskers has been compiled for Dublin City with some significant changes to the previous arrangements. The code is not a rule book or a law (most newspapers got that completely wrong!), \u2026but if you break the code, you will be “subjected to legal enforcement”. Not VERY voluntary then!? It (allegedly) has been put together by the Street Performers themselves, but it smells a little emore of traders trying to quiet down\/shut up street performers.<\/p>\n

Some big changes are that there will be quite a lot of amp free zones where amplification is not allowed. Drums are also not allowed anymore! Performers have to keep a distance of 50 metres, which means a max of 8 performers in Grafton Street. And they are not allowed to sell CDs anymore!!<\/p>\n

This will impact a lot of bands and performers. The Riptide Movement, for example, only became so well known because they tirelessly performed in the streets of Dublin and successfully sold their CD. Their music, requires a certain amount of amplification and drums and selling the CD was important to create awareness. Another regular busker in Grafton Street plays electrical guitar and creates amazing pieces of music with a loop machine. He can’t perform anymore in any amp free zone. It will also impact Street Performers of the acrobatic\/juggling type who use an amp to amplify their voice when talking.<\/p>\n

And some nonsense in it: You have to have 20 songs, but you are only allowed to play for 1 hour at a place. So unless your songs are all shorter than 3 minutes you will never get to play all the songs.<\/p>\n

So there are some aspects that make sense, but all in all, I think the new code will do more damage than good. The Appendix of the new Code is here http:\/\/www.dublincity.ie\/RecreationandCulture\/Events\/Documents\/TheStreetPerformersCode.pdf<\/a> but I wasn’t able to find the full document. And I am also curious about who was involved compiling this code. Was it REALLY a group of Street Performers? And what or who made them the representatives of all other Street Performers and Buskers? Dublin Bike Scheme will get significant expansion<\/h2>\n

The Dublin Bike Scheme continues to be successful and break all the records and now Dublin City has committed to expand the scheme significantly. Brilliant news! Over the next three years the number of bikes will grow from 500 to 1,500 and the number of bike stands will be more than doubled from currently 44 spots to 100. The expansion will initially expand to Heuston Station and to the Docklands but there are plans to increase the number of bikes even to 5,000 and thenumber of bike stations to 300 in a 5-year expansion plan. The Ferocious Mingle Market takes place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Caf\u00e9 and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.<\/p>\n

The 3rd Greystones Americana & Roots Festival will take place from 03-06 Aug. With a big line-up of Irish and international musicians this Music festival is getting better year after year.<\/p>\n

It starts on Friday evening at the Harbour at 19:00 and then continues from 22:00 in a variety of pubs in Greystones.<\/p>\n

On Saturday a family entertainment day, a helicopter display and a rowing regatta are all added to the music in numerous pubs from afternoon until night.<\/p>\n

On Sunday a Dog Show, a French Market and an all-day BBQ are additional features. The festival ends on Monday with Bluegrass on the live stage and more family entertainment. Nearly all events are free. All details are on the website.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Shakespeare in the Park – The Tempest<\/h2>\n

The Theatre Company Fortune’s Fool will perform William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” in Iveagh Gardens from Fri 03 Aug – Sun 12 Aug. Admission is free. The times are 19:00 on 03, 07, 08, 09 and 10 Aug and 13:00 on 04, 05, 11, 12 August. Bring a blanket, you will sit in the grass. The performance is unplugged with no lights and effects and microphones, which gives the whole performance a great atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Many of the same people behind The Tempest this year, were involved in the Shakespeare in the park performances of Romeo and Juliet last year in Ranlegh Park and also in Iveagh Gardens and it was a a magical performance. I strongly recommend that you “try out” The Tempest this year.<\/p>\n

Entrance is from the Harcourt Street side of the Park through Clonmel Street.<\/p>\n

Every year since 2002, the Irish Sand Scultping Team “Duthain Dealbh” is creating a sand sculpture exhibition in the courtyard of Dublin Castle. The sand sculpting team has 7 days to create the sculptures out of 80 tonnes of sand and after that the sculptures will be on show for another month. The carving takes place from 30 July – 05 Aug and the exhibition runs from 06 Aug-02 Sept. The sculptures are truly impressive and I strongly recommend that you have a look when you are in town. All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. The Theatre Company Fortune’s Fool will perform William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” in Iveagh Gardens from Fri 03 Aug – Sun 12 Aug. Admission is free. The performance is unplugged with no lights and effects and microphones, which gives the whole performance a great atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Many of the same people behind The Tempest this year, were involved in the Shakespeare in the park performances of Romeo and Juliet last year in Ranlegh Park and also in Iveagh Gardens and it was a a magical performance. I strongly recommend that you “try out” The Tempest this year.<\/p>\n

The 3rd Greystones Americana & Roots Festival will take place from 03-06 Aug. With a big line-up of Irish and international musicians this Music festival is getting better year after year.<\/p>\n

It starts on Friday evening at the Harbour at 19:00 and then continues from 22:00 in a variety of pubs in Greystones.<\/p>\n

On Saturday a family entertainment day, a helicopter display and a rowing regatta are all added to the music in numerous pubs from afternoon until night.<\/p>\n

On Sunday a Dog Show, a French Market and an all-day BBQ are additional features. The festival ends on Monday with Bluegrass on the live stage and more family entertainment. Nearly all events are free. All details are on the website.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Every year since 2002, the Irish Sand Scultping Team “Duthain Dealbh” is creating a sand sculpture exhibition in the courtyard of Dublin Castle. The sand sculpting team has 7 days to create the sculptures out of 80 tonnes of sand and after that the sculptures will be on show for another month. The carving takes place from 30 July – 05 Aug and the exhibition runs from 06 Aug-02 Sept. The sculptures are truly impressive and I strongly recommend that you have a look when you are in town. If my memory is right, in previous years four sculptures were created, but this year the team seems to have lost a member and will create therfore three sculptures. “Bright Spark” is the title of the exhibition and it is inspired by the innovations of Irish scientists<\/span>. http:\/\/www.irish-sand.com<\/a><\/p>\n

\nOn Monday morning at 06:31 the landing of the Mars Science Laboratory “Curiosity” on Mars will take place. The descent takes 7 minutes, but interestingly the signal from Mars to Earth takes 14 minutes! The August Bank Holiday is for many an opportunity to leave the country or leave Dublin. I expet it will be one of the busiest weekends at Dublin airport AND on the streets of Ireland. In Dublin nearly all shops will be open and it is business as usual (on a normal Sunday). Usually there are less events taking place than on other weekends because event organisers are afraid they lose too many visitors to the Bank Holiday Exodus. If you drive in Dublin, be aware that Bus Lanes and Loading Bays are in operation (because it is Monday), but Pay & Display Parking is not enforced on a Bank Holiday, so you can park for free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bright Sparks – Sand Sculptures<\/h2>\n

Every year since 2002, the Irish Sand Scultping Team “Duthain Dealbh” is creating a sand sculpture exhibition in the courtyard of Dublin Castle. The sand sculpting team has 7 days to create the sculptures out of 80 tonnes of sand and after that the sculptures will be on show for another month. The carving takes place from 30 July – 05 Aug and the exhibition runs from 06 Aug-02 Sept. The sculptures are truly impressive and I strongly recommend that you have a look when you are in town. If my memory is right, in previous years four sculptures were created, but this year the team seems to have lost a member and will create therfore three sculptures. “Bright Spark” is the title of the exhibition and it is inspired by the innovations of Irish scientists<\/span>. http:\/\/www.irish-sand.com<\/a><\/p>\n

The Theatre Company Fortune’s Fool will perform William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” in Iveagh Gardens from Fri 03 Aug – Sun 12 Aug. Admission is free. The times are 19:00 on 03, 07, 08, 09 and 10 Aug and 13:00 on 04, 05, 11, 12 August. Bring a blanket, you will sit in the grass. The performance is unplugged with no lights and effects and microphones, which gives the whole performance a great atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Many of the same people behind The Tempest this year, were involved in the Shakespeare in the park performances of Romeo and Juliet last year in Ranlegh Park and also in Iveagh Gardens and it was a a magical performance. I strongly recommend that you “try out” The Tempest this year.<\/p>\n

The Theatre Company Fortune’s Fool will perform William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” in Iveagh Gardens from Fri 03 Aug – Sun 12 Aug. Admission is free. The times are 19:00 on 03, 07, 08, 09 and 10 Aug and 13:00 on 04, 05, 11, 12 August. Bring a blanket, you will sit in the grass. The performance is unplugged with no lights and effects and microphones, which gives the whole performance a great atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Many of the same people behind The Tempest this year, were involved in the Shakespeare in the park performances of Romeo and Juliet last year in Ranlegh Park and also in Iveagh Gardens and it was a a magical performance. I strongly recommend that you “try out” The Tempest this year.<\/p>\n

Entrance is from the Harcourt Street side of the Park through Clonmel Street.<\/p>\n

This three-day jazz festival, called “Down with Jazz”, has picked the name in memory of an anti-jazz campaign in 1934 in Ireland and they describe the events from back then on their website. But it is anything else but Anti-Jazz, instead you have an opportunity to listen to great Jazz music for three days and all is absolutely free. The line up is on Friday: Swooh Beh, Phisqa, 3G, Jaime Nancy & The Blue Boys and Oko. On Saturday you will hear Leafzang, Freefall, Chrstine Tobin, Umbra, Mixtapes from the Underground. And on Sunday there performers are Redivider, Buckley Standard Time, Sweeney’s Jazzmen, Max Zazka’s Groove.<\/p>\n

A challenging 15km (5hrs) mountain walk, lead by the Dublin Mountains Partnership will take place on Sun 12 Aug. It is\u2026 “A challenging walk from Tibradden through Cruagh wood to summit of Cruagh with views south over Wicklow mountains. The walk then descends into Massy’s wood and up onto Hell Fire where you will have splendid views over Dublin. Back into Massy’s and return through Cruagh to car park.” Information will be given on different DMPW walks and equipment that you should bring to enjoy the walks. Meeting point is Tibradden car park at 11:00 sharp. It will be a strenuous walk and walkers should have previous walking experience.<\/p>\n

Public support for Sean Quinn – How odd is that?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sean Quinn was born into a simple and not at all rich family. He then worked hard in the quarry and cement business and made money. The insurance business and property investment turned him into one of the or even THE richest man in Ireland \u2026 and then all collapsed. Now he owes around EUR 2.5bn and the bank wants their money back. Sounds familiar? Well, maybe the “size” of the problem is different, but many people in Ireland invested and lost and now owe lots of money to a bank. The difference to Sean Quinn, apart from the amount? He destroyed his company by taking questionable loans from that company. He took a super dodgy loan from a bank to buy shares of this bank. He tried to make the rules instead of living by the rules by buying 25% of that bank. He managed to get property to the value of mill ions in safety so that the same bank can’t get their hands on it, when the tower of Babylon came tumbling down. And now he gets 30,000 per MONTH for himself and his family for their living expenses. Poor guy!
\nHe tried, did well, then turned dodgy and now feels cheated out of wealth and luxury because the debts are called back. The courts decided that he and his deals were SOOO dodgy that his son and his nephew were sent to prison for contempt of court (the nephew ran away and is in Northern Ireland and can’t be put behind bars, but that’s another juicy story).
\nThat’s a very high level overview and you probably read\/heard about it. The odd thing about all that is that about 4000 people went on the street in Cavan to support him. (http:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/2012\/0729\/sean-quinn-anglo.html<\/a>) – and that Michael O’Leary from Ryanair wrote a letter of support.
\nYou can be super dodgy and the country folk in your home county will still support you!? How odd is that? What strange and twisted logic drives people to support a dodgy speculator who does everything to interfere with the law, but when it comes to real injustice they stay at home? Or has anybody experienced any other protest marchin Cavan recently?
\nOr is it only GAA supporters that are that strange as this article suggests:

\nBy the way, I don’t think people should be happy about his misfortune or should throw stones at him. He did the best he could (must do better next time!) and then turned desperate and now deserves the appropriate treatment the law has planned for him. But I totally don’t get why 4000 people would support him publicly. Oh, and in case you thought it doesn’t affect you, or if you think the poor guy who created so many jobs in his insurance out of the goodness of his heart deserves all the support, read this: http:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/2012\/0731\/quinn-insurance-administration-could-cost-1-6bn.html<\/a> If you have a home or car insurance, YOU will pay for him screwing up and taking money from his company to cover his debts for the next 12, maybe even 20 years!!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
