Hi all!<\/p>\n

What a great weekend last week at the Street Performance World Championship. The weather was perfect and the performances were outstanding as always. I saw 7 out of 16 performances and enjoyed every single one of them. If you were there, you know what I am talking about. If you were not in Merrion Square, I wonder what kept you away. :-)<\/p>\n

For all people attending, you might not have found out yet who won the competition. So here are the details: First Place was won by “Cirque No Problem”, a Juggling, Acrobatics and Trapeze act. Second was “Reuben Dot Dot Dot” on his high pole and third place was secured by “Mario Queen of the Circus”. I had a difference ranking and hadn’t even seen Cirque No Problem because I prefer the more comedic acts to the more traditional Trapez\/Acrobatics acts. But in the end, it doesn’t really matter who won. in third – congrats to them and all the performers on a wonderful festival!<\/p>\n

With about four festivals last weekend, this week can’t keep up, but there is definitely one in Dun Laoghaire to check out and the Bray Summer Festival is continuing. (I always find it impressive that relatively small Bray can run a festival for 4 weeks. Dublin City can’t keep up with them!)<\/p>\n

You can imagine that I get regularly mails from readers of the Dublin Event Guide, but it amuses me when people address it to “Dear Sir” or to “To whom it may concern”. You can all just call me by my name if you wish! :-) And if you have no clue who I am, the name is always at the end of the newsletter, but I will give you a VERY brief outline today: My name is Joerg Steegmueller and I am originally from Germany, but came to Ireland many many years ago and am still here. I have a day-job (in Telecommunications) and the Dublin Event Guide is a spare time activity. I wouldn’t be bored without it, I have LOTS of different interests and hobbies, but I am writing this weekly e-zine for the last 267 weeks and have no plans to give it up!<\/p>\n

It takes a lot of time out of my week, with approx. 20-25 hours every week to write the e-zine, but with at least 10 more hours during the week to answer mails and check up on events etc. All this work I do for free and I don’t earn a cent with the Dublin Event Guide. But it does cost me a good bit. I have a bill of about EUR 170 per month and I am sure you understand that I am happy to give my time, but hope to gather the money from your donations. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down<\/em><\/p>\n

This weekend I plan to go to Dun Laoghaire for dlr Fusion and I was looking at the programme of the Malahide Festival as a further option. On Sunday, the Dublin Flea Market and the Animation Art Show in the Science Gallery sound interesting and also the Big Bang Festival event in Stephen’s Green. The Bray Summerfest continues, but the Food Festival this week is not the most attractive event, especially because only limited places were available. The gigs are continuing on Friday, Sat and Sunday, but I think I will not go to Bray this weekend.<\/p>\n

On Monday the talk about Mariachi’s sounds good, but I am not sure if there will be a translation into English, you might want to check on that. If you have time during the week, try going on a Dail and Seanad tour (see the Dublin News for details). Opera in the Open starts again on Thursday if that is something for you and Shakespeare performance in Iveagh Garden is a must-go event from Friday onwards, but I will tell you more about that next week! ;-)<\/p>\n

Apologies for a mistake and an interesting discovery<\/h2>\n
\n

Since the Dublin Event Guide has the shiny new layout, I am not writing the whole text in Word anymore and then just transfer it into an e-mail, but I have a sophisticated and smart backend system in which I can enter the information and it creates the newsletter with all the fancy formatting for me. The guys in iQ Content who did soooo much work on the layout and the whole workflow system for the Dublin Event Guide, did an amazing job! I can’t thank them enough! Any kind of semi-automated system can, however also make user mistakes worse and last week I copied an old event into the events list because I wanted to use the template. I made a small mistake and by accident the event was posted as a current event. It was a talk in the National Gallery that had taken place in April and the Dublin Event Guide claimed that it was happening last Tuesday again. At 11:00 on Tuesday I got two calls from the National Architecture Archive and from someone from Dublin City expressing that the National Gallery wasn’t happy because people had turned up for the event. It wasn’t the MOST interesting event, so I investigated a little more and to my surprise I found out that Pivot Dublin, a website that has been set up by the Dublin City Council City Architects Department has copied a number of event notices from the Dublin Event Guide word-by-word (unfortunately without any reference to the source!) and because the talk was about architecture and the Pivot Dublin target group is interested in architecture it meant that a wider audience and an audience that had more an interest than the general Dublin Event Guide audience got this wrong information.<\/p>\n

First of all I would like to apologise for the mistake I made, but I know that the Pivot Dublin readers who were affected will NOT see this apology, because the people from Pivot Dublin will most likely not include THIS message verbatim! :-) Secondly, I would like to declare that everyone is very welcome to use the information I provide to let other people know about all these great events in Dublin, but it would be very nice if you included some information as to where you got it from. ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Dail and Seanad Tours available<\/h2>\n

Over the next eight weeks, the period during which our TDs are on holidays, the Dail and Seanad are opened up for free public tours. The guided tour will take place twice from Mon-Fri and will have a duration of approx 50 minutes. The starting times are 10:30 and 14:30 and you have to be at the Kildare Street Gate 15 minutes before the tour starts and bring some ID. I was in the Dail many many many years ago, when it was no problem at all to get in (They didn’t even check your bags or have a metal detector back then. I arrived at the gate, asked if I could get in and they were puzzled about my request. Seemingly that was a rare question they were asked. On the last Sunday of July thousands and thousands of people, year after year make the same journey. Their goal is to reach the top of Croagh Patrick. Right at the top, there is a small church, which opens only once a year – on Reek’s Sunday. Everyone who makes the pilgrimage does it for his or her own reasons – but for all of them – this is a spiritual journey and Sergey Sergeev wanted to share it with them. He has been living in Ireland for the last 10 years and through his pictures Sergey shows that traditions, spirituality and heritage are still kept alive. The Ferocious Mingle Market takes place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Caf\u00e9 and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.<\/p>\n

dlr Fusion, a social inclusion festival, is taking place in Dun Laoghaire this weekend. The weekend provides a vibrant and fun-filled programme for the whole family that promotes diversity and cultural variety. It will showcase a \u2018fusion\u2019 of musicians, local dance groups, ethnic food, colourful street performers, children\u2019s events and all events and workshops are free.<\/p>\n

Because two years ago Dun Laoghaire indicated that there might be a smaller replacement of the much missed “Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures” and with the “cultural diversity” message at dlr Fusion, a natural question is “Is this the replacement for the Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures?”. Dun Laoghaire clearly doesn’t want to link the two events and if you look at the programme, you will see that it has similar aims, but is significantly smaller and won’t come near the outstanding Festival of World Cultures.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless it looks like an interesting event with a set of attractive features. dlr Fusion, a social inclusion festival, is taking place in Dun Laoghaire this weekend. The weekend provides a vibrant and fun-filled programme for the whole family that promotes diversity and cultural variety. It will showcase a \u2018fusion\u2019 of musicians, local dance groups, ethnic food, colourful street performers, children\u2019s events and all events and workshops are free.<\/p>\n

Because two years ago Dun Laoghaire indicated that there might be a smaller replacement of the much missed “Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures” and with the “cultural diversity” message at dlr Fusion, a natural question is “Is this the replacement for the Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures?”. Dun Laoghaire clearly doesn’t want to link the two events and if you look at the programme, you will see that it has similar aims, but is significantly smaller and won’t come near the outstanding Festival of World Cultures.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless it looks like an interesting event with a set of attractive features. The Theatre Company Fortune’s Fool will perform William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” in Iveagh Gardens from Fri 03 Aug – Sun 12 Aug. Admission is free. The performance is unplugged with no lights and effects and microphones, which gives the whole performance a great atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Many of the same people behind The Tempest this year, were involved in the Shakespeare in the park performances of Romeo and Juliet last year in Ranlegh Park and also in Iveagh Gardens and it was a a magical performance. I strongly recommend that you “try out” The Tempest this year.<\/p>\n

Christmas Toys in July?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Argos definitely pushed it a little too far when they got their PR agency to distribute Press Releases during the week announcing the Top 10 Toys for Christmas. Come on people, it is still July! Apart from this being much too early for thought about Christmas or Christmas shopping (Yep, Argos pointed out that “The Top 10 Toys will be available from 21st July 2012 with the exception of Furby, which launches in the Autumn.”!), I even think that Argos has not much clue. They might have identified a few big sellers correctly, but the fact that no Nintendo\/Wii\/other play thing is included makes me wonder if they have done their homework. And selecting 20 Top10, 10 for boys and 10 for girls, doesn’t really show much intuition or smartness. If they had said the 5 Top ones and would not have mentioned anymore than five, I would have paid a little attention, but just rattling the big amount of 20 presents that sell currently or look promising is not too challenging. I am entirely unimpressed. SO much that I won’t even list the Top 10. But if you absolutely want to know, you can get some information about some of the Top 10 here:
