Hi all!<\/p>\n

This is an interesting weekend and upcoming week. The week is spookily quiet. There are a number of events, but definitely a lot less than normally. However, the weekend is probably one of the busiest of the year. The main event is the Street Performance World Championship in Merrion Square. The most popular event in Ireland behind the much more fragmented St. Patrick’s Day Festival, so as a single event, I would say the Street Performance World Championship is the single most popular festival. And despite that there is still a surprisingly large amount of people that have never heard of it. This is strange and I hope you – as a person “in the know” – will help spreading the word further. Tell your friends about the festival or even better, just bring them with you. Saturday and Sunday in Merrion Square, you will love it! See you there! :-)<\/p>\n

The other festivals, on the same weekend are the Rose Festival (combined with the Viking Festival) in St. Anne’s Park, the Bray Summerfest with the great Bray Air Display and there is also the much smaller, but in its 42nd year very well established Liberties Festival.<\/p>\n

So make the most out of the weekend! It will be a good one – as long as you go to the Street Performance World Chamiponship! :-)<\/p>\n

After nearly finishing the Dublin Event Guide this week, I had an Internet outage for more than an hour, so I am running a little late again, but I will send it out soon, even if one or two (less relevant) events will be missing.<\/p>\n

If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!<\/p>\n

Last week Stephen Covey died. He was an American educator, author, businessman and motivational speaker. His best known book was “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” (http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Seven_Habits_of_Highly_Effective_People<\/a>), which was sold 25 mio times worldwide! Covey was 79 and fell of his bike in April and it seems that his death had to do with the injuries he get when he fell. The Dubliners Dilemma – Play – Ticket Competition<\/h2>\n

The Dubliners Dilemma is a high-energy adaption of James Joyce’s “Dubliners” and is currently running in the City Arts venue at 15 Bachelor’s Walk, Dublin 1 as lunchtime theatre from 13:08 (sharp!) until 14:00. I only found positive reviews and since it is coming to an end soon, you better hurry if you want to see it. Tickets are normally EUR 12, but if you look around a bit on the website (Check out http:\/\/bachelorswalkdublin.com\/tickets-and-booking\/<\/a>) you will find tickets for just EUR 9.<\/p>\n

Four readers of the Dublin Event Guide will do even better and will get tickets for free. I have two pairs, one pair for Tues 24 July and one for Wed 25 July. Free Events in 2012 – More or Less?<\/h2>\n
\n

With 120-160 free events every single week, it is nearly impossible to keep track of everything and to compare the number of events year on year, but half way through the yeart, it seems that there are definitely less headline events this year than in previous years. The bigger events that I am missing are the Maritime Festival along the Liffey, the SOGO Festival in the Soth William Street area, the Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Culture, Urban Garden at Smithfield and the differently named Summer Festivals that Temple Bar held every year. The Viking Festival at Wood Quay was merged with this week’s Rose Festival and Kings of Concrete will be merged with the Tall Ship Festival. There are a few new festivals too: The Ukulele Festival in Dun Laoghaire, DLR Fusion in Dun Laoghaire (a tiny “replacement” of the Festival of World Culture and in Dublin the once-off Tall Ship Festival. So the bottom line shows a loss, but luckily we still have the Street Performance World Championship and the Soul Festival and the Bray Summer Fest and the always busy Dun Laoghaire Events people, but it good amazingly quiet around the Dublin City Events department, in Temple Bar and in the Dublin Docklands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

O2 Closed for a While<\/h2>\n
\n

It really seems that the “summer” affects some of the businesses severely: The O2 (or Point Theatre) will be closed from now until the 19 Sept with one brief interrruption of a single concert (The Black Eyes) on 22 August. Closing for 2 months can’t be a profitable thing for a concert venue. http:\/\/theo2.ie\/<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Let’s Walk & Talk – Weekly Walking Groups<\/h2>\n
\n

In addition to the once-off Let’s Walk & Talk events, there are a number of weekly walks taking place in July (and in most months of the year). This Dublin City Council community initiative, is a great way for people to stay healthy, meet people and learn something new about Dublin. All Let’s Walk & Talk events are free and no advance booking is necessary and the walks last about 90 minutes. The weekly walks are:
\n+ Sun 14:00: Walk in the Phoenix or surrounding areas. Meet at Parkgate Street, entrance to the Phoenix Park, Dublin 7
\n+ Mon 11:00: Walks along the Royal Canal, in the Phoenix Park and many other places. Meet outside the Halfway House Pub, Ashtown, Navan Road, Dublin 7

Textadeal.ie – New Discount Buying website<\/h2>\n

Discount or Group Buying websites are everywhere at the moment. Nearly all of us have heard about Groupon\/City Deals or Living Social. In addition to these two big ones, there are smaller and local sites that offer similar services. Now another new company has entered the very crowded market and they realised that they need to do things differently to be successful.<\/p>\n

The newest Discount Buying Website is Textadeal at http:\/\/www.textadeal.ie\/afflink\/dublineventguide<\/a> and their approach is indeed very interesting. The need to provide BIG discounts and on top of that having to pay from the discounted prize a sizeable commission is the biggest problems for shops, restaurants etc So the discount has to be more realistic and the commission has to be more moderate. Textadeal is doing that by reducing their involvement in the deal somewhat: If you want to buy one of the offers presnted on their website, you just pay 10% to Textadeal, then then send you a text message with a code and with that code you go directly to the shop\/restaurant\/service provider and pay the rest of the money to them when you get your service or product.<\/p>\n

A new approach that provides savings to the customers but leaves a fair amount of money with the service provider and therefore is a lot more sustainable and repeatable. If Textadeal gets interesting enough offers on their site, it could just work! 120,000 football fans visited the Polish city Poznan during Euro 2012 and 70,000 of them were Irish. In order to relive some of those unforgettable memories, the City of Poznan has organised an outdoor exhibition in Dublin consisting of 20 large format images which capture the best moments of the Irish invasion in Poznan during the tournament. The exhibition will also be presented in Rome, Zagreb and Berlin. I don’t know where exactly the boundaries are of the Liberties area in Dublin 8, but you could roughly say it starts a Christchurch and extends nearly to Kilmainham with the main area along Thomas Street, Cork Street and Meath Street. The Liberties Festival is one of the oldest Community festivals in Ireland. It started in 1970 and celebrates its 42nd year this year. The main day is Sunday, but there are two exhibitions in Saturday and some non-free events taking place.
\nThe exhibitions are “Taking Liberties” by Shane McCarthy in The Gallery Zozimus, 56 Francis Street, Dublin 8. McCarthy’s photography exhibition shows the people and places of today’s Liberties. And the second exhibition is by graffiti artist Maser. He created a large scale outdoor portrait of Robert Emmet’s housekeeper, Anne Devlin. The portrait was created duringt he week and is being finished on Fri 20 July. It can be seen on the corner of Meath Street and Carman’s Hall.

This will be the third year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From June until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com invites to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based. All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The Street Performance World Championship (this year sponsored by Laya Healthcare) is – in my opinion – the best festival in Dublin. A full weekend of the best Street Performers from all over the world in Merrion Square with 16 performers doing their 45 minute shows numerous times throughout the day on 8 pitches, you have the opportunity to see 100 shows over two days and there are some AMAZING shows.
\nYou will see Juggling, Sword Swallowing, Acrobatics, Magic, Beat Boxing and even a Human Cannonball. You will be wow-ed, amazed and you will laugh as much as you have never done before! So, whatever your plans were for this weekend, CHANGE THEM and make sure you will go to Merrion Square at least for a little while.<\/p>\n

I have been a fan of the Street Performance World Championship from the first year and every year try to see as many shows as possible, but if you want to see all of them, it is 16 shows and unless you start already on Thursday and Friday, when the “warm-up” round takes place, the Saturday and Sunday will not be enough to see them all. So you have to choose. I can’t tell you who are the best, but I can tell you who I think you should definitely see.
\nIf you only have 45 minutes, see the Space Cowboy. He is an outstanding performer who won the Championship every time he was in Dublin as far as I remember. If you have a bit more time, add Mario, the Queen of the Circus and the Piano Juggler to your plan. Of the performers I know, the fourth one would be the Magician Charlie Caper. But I have never seen the Human Cannonball and hear that Scott Jackson (Beat Box) and The Lizardman are well worth watching as well. This is my (long) shortlist for the moment, but the best is to try it out yourself!<\/p>\n

The event is free, but the performers do this as their job, so they will invite you to reward them after their show when they hold their hat out for you to donate money if you liked the show. So, bring some money with you, they are definitely worth it!

The Street Performance World Championship (this year sponsored by Laya Healthcare) is – in my opinion – the best festival in Dublin. A full weekend of the best Street Performers from all over the world in Merrion Square with 16 performers doing their 45 minute shows numerous times throughout the day on 8 pitches, you have the opportunity to see 100 shows over two days and there are some AMAZING shows.
\nYou will see Juggling, Sword Swallowing, Acrobatics, Magic, Beat Boxing and even a Human Cannonball. You will be wow-ed, amazed and you will laugh as much as you have never done before! So, whatever your plans were for this weekend, CHANGE THEM and make sure you will go to Merrion Square at least for a little while.<\/p>\n

I have been a fan of the Street Performance World Championship from the first year and every year try to see as many shows as possible, but if you want to see all of them, it is 16 shows and unless you start already on Thursday and Friday, when the “warm-up” round takes place, the Saturday and Sunday will not be enough to see them all. So you have to choose. I can’t tell you who are the best, but I can tell you who I think you should definitely see.
\nIf you only have 45 minutes, see the Space Cowboy. He is an outstanding performer who won the Championship every time he was in Dublin as far as I remember. If you have a bit more time, add Mario, the Queen of the Circus and the Piano Juggler to your plan. Of the performers I know, the fourth one would be the Magician Charlie Caper. But I have never seen the Human Cannonball and hear that Scott Jackson (Beat Box) and The Lizardman are well worth watching as well. This is my (long) shortlist for the moment, but the best is to try it out yourself!<\/p>\n

The event is free, but the performers do this as their job, so they will invite you to reward them after their show when they hold their hat out for you to donate money if you liked the show. So, bring some money with you, they are definitely worth it!

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Do not smuggle Kinder Surprise Eggs into the USA!<\/strong><\/p>\n

I picked up a story in The Journal.ie during the week that made me chuckle in disbelief: Two men from Seattle were held in a detention centre for two hours because they tried to smuggled extremely dangerous goods into the USA. It was not drugs or guns, no, it was the highly dangerous Kinder Surprise Eggs that caused the arrest. The two men were in Canada and bought Kinder Surprise Eggs to bring back to their families and friends. Border Agents found them in their car and because they are illegal in the USA, the two men got into trouble. Luckily they were let go with a warning after the two hours, but I am sure they were not too happy when they were detained. Amazingly the US Customs and Border Agency has released information that says that in 2011 the massive number of more than 60,000 Kinder Surprise Eggs was seized from traveller’s baggage and from international shipments. http:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/border-agents-bust-seattle-pair-for-smuggling-kinder-surprise-eggs-525509-Jul2012\/<\/a> Sounds a little over the top, doesn’t it? The fear, by the way, is that young children could choke on the small plastic toys in the Kinder Surprise eggs and therefore it is illegal to import them. Crazy? Definitely from our European point of view! The eggs carry a warning that they are unsuitable (like MANY toys) for children under 3, but they are not illegal.<\/p>\n

Now, can we throw stones or are we sitting in the proverbial glass house? Well, if you look at the once valid EU Quality Standards for Bananas, the rule that allegedly (but this is an incorrect interpretation) made bend bananas illegal ( http:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/LexUriServ\/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:31994R2257:EN:HTML<\/a> ) from 1994-2008 you realise that we do very odd things as well on this side of the Atlantic. But, let’s face it, one oddness doesn’t make another oddness any better! ;-)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
