\nSo no more complaints, the time has come now when Christmas lights can be switched on – even in my books! :-)
\nBUT there IS something that surprised me during the week: I saw the switched-on Christmas tree in O’Connell Street! To me Christmas is green (tree) and red (candles) and maybe a bit yellow (stars and lights). I LOVED the old (until 2006) decoration in Grafton Street http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/irisheyes\/320818005<\/a> and don’t really like the non-Christmassy chandelier look since last year, despite the outrageous cost http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/irisheyes\/2093048486<\/a>. But O’Connell Street in 2008 tops this – unfortunately in my eyes on the negative scale – and again is the same company involved that made the lights for the chandelier look in Grafton Street. :-( The rather ugly white plastic monster of a tree in O’Connell Street, which flashes blue, green and red, and seems to have some cancerous growth on it, just doesn’t do it for me. http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/infomatique\/3014520506<\/a>. It has a pyramid form (with warts) and that is the ONLY thing that resembles it slightly to a Christmas tree. Apart from that it has not much to do with Christmas atmosphere!
\nNow, there is another aspect to that: Christmas decoration in Ireland got a lot more sophisticated and less garish in the last 10 years in Ireland. But to me this tree is a step back. I wonder if the same tree would have been put up in Grafton Street or if it just and only fits into the Henry Street\/Talbot Street area, an area which – for decades – gets the somewhat cheaper look in Dublin.<\/p>\n

\nArtPolonia, the Lab for intercultural cooperation and exchange is having the last event in this year on Sun 30 Nov at 20:00 in the Liberty Hall Theatre. ArtPolonia is delighted to present for the fist time in Ireland the Leszek Mozdzer Trio with their improv jazz concert “Between Us and the Light”. “Between Us and the Light” is the latest sparkling gem in Leszek Mozdzer’s rich catalogue. The Polish piano genius performs in a jazz trio context, alongside Swedish bassist and cellist Lars Danielsson and Israeli percussionist Zohar Fresco. Like the previous album of the trio (The Time, 2005), “Between Us and the Light” has garnered double platinum award in Poland only two weeks after it’s premiere. \nOn 02 December Eugene McCabe, who wrote “Death and Nightingales”, which has been described as “a deeply moving, powerful, and unforgettable book” and as “clearly one of the great Irish masterpieces of the century”, will read and discuss his work as part of the Writers Centre “Hourglass Readings”. \nFrom 21-23 November 2008 the Festival of Polish Cinema is taking place in Dublin. KINOPOLIS is a project organised by the Pomeranian Film Foundation and the Polish Embassy in Dublin. This year a further co-operation partner is the Dublin Cinema Group. The Festival comprises of a 3-day exposition of Polish feature films and animated films as well as Polish silent cinema accompanied by live jazz music. The festival guests will lend weight to the whole event: The outstanding Polish film and theatre actor Zbigniew Zamachowski as well as Marek Skrobecki, co-creator of Peter and the Wolf \u2013 an animated film awarded an Oscar in 2007, will be in Dublin.

\nDecember is fast approaching and with Christmas Lights being switched on left, right and centre it is about time to mention some of the main events this year. The main and – as far as I know – only every day Christmas Market in Dublin is the 12 Day of Christmas Market in the Docklands (at George’s Dock). This year is the fourth year (I think!) and over the last 3 years the Docklands Christmas market grew into a quite good Christmas market (I am comparing with the best ;-) ). Ok, it is still not comparable to a German or Austrian Christmas Market, but it is getting better and hopefully this year will be another step in the right direction. The Docklands Christmas Market starts on the 12 Dec and runs every day (12:00-20:00) until the 23 Dec. http:\/\/www.ddda.ie\/12daysofchristmas\/<\/a>

\nI seem to remember that there were two weekends of Christmas Market in Temple Bar last year, but unfortunately this year this will not be the case any more. Nevertheless the Temple Bar Christmas Programme contains a good few interesting events on the 6, 13 and 20 Dec in addition to the normal weekend events in Temple Bar. (http:\/\/www.templebar.ie\/home_nav_2_t_17.html<\/a>). All events are free, but some require booking, so please check as soon as possible!

\nDuring the last 1-2 years Farmleigh House kept impressing with brilliant cultural events and Christmas 2008 is no different. The Farmleigh House Christmas Programme contains a long list of activities on 6\/7, 13\/14 and 20\/21 December and you should go to their website to checkout the programme (http:\/\/www.farmleigh.ie\/culturalevents\/currentevents\/christmas2008<\/a>) and to plan your own activities. Children and adults will be entertained over the 3 weekends and there should be something for you too!

\nAnother HUGELY popular event in Phoenix Park is the guided walk (Saturdays & Sundays in December) with Deer Keepers in Phoenix Park to meet Rudolph’s cousins, the Fallow Deer, in the surroundings of one of the largest enclosed city parks in Europe. However, pre-booking is essential and this event is soo popular that it could be booked out already. Call the Phoenix Park Visitors Centre as soon as possible on 01 677 0095 if you want to surprise your children with this visit to the “reindeer”.

\nIn addition to the free events, there are the non-free ice skating events at the RDS (19 Nov-11 Jan), Liffey Valley (19 Nov-04 Jan) and Smithfield Plaza (21 Nov-11 Jan). At the RDS and Liffey Valley there are Peak and Off-Peak prices. Smithfield only has one price. Off-peak prices at the RDS and Liffey Valley are cheaper than at Smithfield, but the peak prices are more expensive than at Smithfield.
\nI will include all the free Christmas events at the Docklands, Temple Bar and Farmleigh House here and if I come across any other markets etc, I will tell you about them as well, but in order to plan ahead, it would make sense if you checked out the websites I listed above.<\/p>\n

\n*Saturday: Kathie Stamou’s International Jewellery Exhibition, the 178th Royal Hibernian Academy Exhibition, and the Video Installation at Red Stables Studio. And for children the BIDs for KIDs Storytelling.
\n*Sunday: On Sunday I will go to the new Flea Market in the Dublin Food Co-op Building off Cork Street. And in the evening I will be at the Gardiner Street Gospel Mass again.
\n* During the week: I would go to some of the lectures, but because I am training and teaching Krav Maga this week, I won’t be able to go. However, on Thursday I will try to make it to the Temple Bar Event for a little while before I start writing next week’s Event Guide.<\/p>\n

\nThe Czech photographer Miroslav Tich\u00fd is exhibiting in Gallery 1. This is accompanied by a video about Tich\u00fd\u2019s work by Annelies \u0160trba and a series of her own images, “From My Life Dreams”. The exhibition will run from 20 Nov-22 Jan.
\nBarry White and Sheena Malone will give talks on the exhibitions on Wed 10 Dec 2008 and Wed 14 Jan 2009. \u2018K\u00e1rhozat\u2019 (Damnation) by B\u00e9la Tarr will be screened on Thursday 4 December 2008 at 17:00. \nHugh Douglas Hamilton (1740-1808) is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished Irish portraitists of the 18th century. His “A Life in Pictures” is an exhibition of oils, pastels and drawings marking the bi-centenary of his death. The exhibition will be on show from 22 Nov-15 Feb in the Beit Wing of the National Gallery of Ireland.
\nA special series of talks relating to the Hamilton exhibition will take place in the Lecture Theatre over the period 23 November to 9 December 2008. Admission free. Further details are available from the National Gallery website.

\nMike Hands from the Inga Foundation will speak at an event of Tai Chi Ireland, 90 Lower Baggot Street on Fri 21 Nov at 20:00.
\nMike has developed a way to stop slash-and-burn agriculture in the rainforest by giving the landless farmers a way to grow crops in alleys of a particular species of tree, called the INGA. By allowing the trees to grow, all weeds are smothered (a big problem) and then by carefully pruning the trees, mulch is obtained to give the soil its much needed phosphorous fertility, as well as supplying the farmer with months of fuel wood. It\u2019s been up and running in Honduras for about 10 years, but funds are needed to grow demo and Inga seed farms, because the demand is phenomenal. Inga Alley Cropping, as it\u2019s known, is a way to halt the rainforest destruction by slash-and-burn farmers, who are mainly responsible for its destruction. The Inga Foundation offers them a way to feed their family sustainably, give them a cash crop, and preserve their forest heritage, whose destruction contributes a massive 20% to

\nOn Sun 23 Nov at 11:00 the Pepper Canister Church on Mount Street Crescent is the venue for a Christmas Thanksgiving service on aid of Guide Dogs.
\nOne of the assistance dogs owners will speak at it about their experience of having an assistance dog. Guide dogs are used for the blind, for autistic children and as assistance dogs for the disabled. The talk last year from the mother of an autistic child and I am told, it was hugely inspiring, and this years service promises to be nice and interesting as well. Working dogs are welcome to the mass, so there will be guide dogs, assistance dogs, Peata dogs (pet therapy www.peata.org<\/a>) and puppies in training. There will be a collection for Guide Dogs and Christmas Cards etc are on sale. There is no admission fee (it is an ecumenical church service), but donations are very welcome. There will be tea and coffee after the service.
\nMargaret G tells me that this is a really nice event to support and a lovely opportunity to see the wonderful work Guide Dogs do in opening up people’s lives. \nThere was once a flea market where the Stephens Green Shopping Centre now stands and there and in other places Dublin used to have quite a few flea markets to rummage through on any given weekend until Grafton St and Henry St took over as shopping promenades. But it is time to go back to the roots! Making its first appearance on 23 Nov from 11:00-17:00 a new Dublin Flea Market will take place in the Dublin Food Coop Building, Newmarket (off Cork Street). After the first date it will take place either fortnightly or monthly from then on.

\nNow, in this context, I came across one rather odd thing: When a bomb has been found and the Army Bomb Disposal Unit have done their work, then certain media outlets always report the “bomb was made safe”. It seems that this is the official line from the Army Bomb Disposal Unit. But if you investigate a bit further then you find other media reports that explain in nearly all such cases that a “controlled explosion” solved the problem. Isn’t “bomb was made safe” the best euphemism in the world for blowing the whole damn thing up? I thought – as learned from all James Bond films – “that making safe” is more like cutting the red (or was it the blue?) wire! If only George Bush had known this term! He would have told us that “we made the ammunition factory in Baghdad safe!”<\/p>\n
