Are you happy to hear from me again? ;-) I hope so! Another week is over and we are getting closer and closer to Christmas. Christmas?? \u2026 I hear you saying? Well, believe it or not, Christmas is starting THIS weekend if you listen to the Dublin City traders (i.e. shops)! The Christmas lights in Dublin will be switched on this Sunday! In Dundrum Shopping Centre it already started last weekend, but they are a little crazy out there anyway. In my opinion Christmas decoration should not be up until the 1st of December. I LOVE Christmas, but the magic of Christmas is partially based on its “limited availability” and if the “Christmas period” is continually extended it will just not be the same anymore. Luckily there are a few shops and traders that agree with this: The good people in Temple Bar will not switch their Christmas lights on until 27 Nov. This is a lot better than Dublin City (08 Nov) or Dundrum Shopping Centre (02 Nov!!!). The traders in Grafton Street seem to expect additional business from longer burning Christmas lights! Not sure where the connection is there. Do you buy more because Grafton Street is illuminated? I don’t!
\nBy the way, there is ONE aspect that will make me accept a longer “Christmas period” without complaining: If the Christmas decoration and the lights make people friendlier with each other and if it leads to more smiling and happiness, THEN I would even in favour of switching on the lights in October. :-)
\nYou can help! ;-) How about making an effort of saying something nice to a person in the bus, in work, in a shop or restaurant or to your partner, flatmate, parent, brother\/sister or friend? If you try to say ONE unexpected appreciative thing every day until Christmas, you have done so much good, that I will lobby Santa for an extra big Christmas present for you! Give it a try, it is fun to surprise people with good things. ;-) Ohhh, and remember this type of present is recession proof! It doesn’t cost a cent!<\/p>\n

\nThe Event Guide is getting longer and longer and I need your help in deciding how to continue: I have two options. Either I continue to include all events I come across OR I leave out events. _I_ would prefer not to “censor” anything but with more people feeding me information, it will probably grow and grow and once it has the size of the phone book\u2026. ;-).
\nI know that the newsletter is very difficult to read because it is so long and all I can suggest is that you use the section headlines for the day and then the headlines in Capital letters to filter and only read what interests you or when you have time.
\nIt has been suggested to me by a few people that I include my own recommendations in a paragraph here and I might do that to help you pre-select a bit. I tried it this week: Scroll to the very bottom and look for the section “JOERG’S PLANS”. ;-)
\nPlease let me know your opinions (dublineventguide@gmail.com) but PLEASE keep in mind that I write the Event Guide in my spare time and don’t make money with it so I have don’t have an unlimited amount of time and hugely complicated formatting (for example) will UNFORTUNATELY not be do-able.<\/p>\n

IRISH WRITERS’ CENTRE EVENTS – TICKET COMPETITION

\nOn 18 November John Boyne, who wrote “The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas”, which is the basis for the current movie by the same title, will read and discuss his work as part of the Writers Centre “Hourglass Readings”. U2 TOWER DELAYED
\nDid you hear that the Dublin Docklands have informed that the U2 Tower, which is meant to be built in the Docklands not too far from Pearse Street will be delayed by one year? Tourists are ALREADY visiting the site where at some stage (my guess is more in 3-5 years than next year!) the U2 Tower will be built! Not sure what is so exciting about an empty plot, but U2 obviously have a magical effect on some people. Apart from the fact that a few of U2’s millions will be invested in this building (with a healthy return, I am sure), the new U2 recording studio is planned to be at the top floor of the seriously high building.

ALL YOU CAN DRINK FOR EUR 50
\nSin Bar in Temple Bar has announced that it is running an “All you can drink” offer for EUR 50. http:\/\/www.herald.ie\/national-news\/city-news\/bar-pushes-all-you-can-drink-offer-for-euro50-1518900.html With current pub prices it is not surprising that pubs have to start with some innovative ideas to attract people. Lowering some prices INCLUDING soft drink prices would be a better idea! Now EUR 50 is not necessarily a bargain and maybe that will somewhat “filter” the customers going for it, but it is interesting that the Manager, Ciaran Gray, said – according to the newspaper article – that “It will absolutely not encourage excessive drinking because we’ll be as strict on that as ever\u2026”. I wonder if he has ever been at an event in Ireland where there was a free bar provided!? I guess the answer is NO, otherwise he would realise that this statement is MORE than questionable!<\/p>\n
PEADAR KEARNEY – NEW VENUE WITH LOTS OF FREE EVENTS
\nCarlos from GigEvents contacted me today to tell me about a new venue with a brilliant gig line up. Peadar Kearney’s in 64 Dame Street, Dublin 2, is what once was called “Rogue”. But a total refit has turned this new venue in a hugely promising live music venue with an impressive list of free gigs and – in my opinion – THAT is the way to get people back into pubs, not with 50 Euro drinks promotions.

FINNISH ART – NATIONAL GALLERY
\n“Northern Stars and Southern Lights: The Golden Age of Finnish Art 1870-1920” is the title of a new exhibition in the Millennium Wing of the National Gallery of Ireland. The exhibition will feature Finnish painting and printmaking from the turn of the 19th century. The launch is on 7 November 2008 from 18:00-20:00. The exhibition (until 01 Feb 2009) is not free, but costs admission of EUR 7.
\nWhat is free, however is an introductory talk on \u2018The Golden Age of Finnish Art\u2019, by Timo Huusko, Curator, Ateneum Art Museum. This will take place on Sunday 09 November 2008 at 15:00 and is part of the public lectures series in the National Gallery\u2019s lecture theatre. www.nationalgallery.ie

WORLD WAR ONE DAY – NATIONAL MUSEUM COLLINS BARRACKS
\nThe National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts and History, Collins Barracks, is holding a day of talks and activities on Sat 08 Nov to mark the 90th anniversary of the end of World War One.
\nAround 200,000 Irishmen served in the British services in World War One. The workshops, handling sessions and activities at the Museum will explore these Irishman\u2019s experiences in World War One and what it was like to serve in that war.
\n Talks will include stories of Irish soldiers who were in the British Army and P.O.W.s in Germany in the last year of the War, including a story of a great escape from Holzminden prison camp by Irishman Lieutenant Philip Norbert Smith, from Arranmore, Co.Cavan, and also about the experiences of the Irish soldiers during the war.
\nMany of the talks and activities will take place in the exhibition Soldiers and Chiefs: The Irish at War at Home and Abroad from 1550. There will be a demonstration and handling session of the large 18pdr field artillery gun. The more courageous can come along and meet a WWI British Army recruitment re-enactor and discover who and how people joined up to fight in the war.
\nFor those wishing to explore their creative side, there will also be offering workshops to make your own World War One bi-planes (max 15 participants), and create your own ID tags.
\n To bring the war to life there will be a screening of the film: The Battle of the Ancre, a battle that was fought on the Somme from September to November 1916. This propaganda film made by the British War Office was shown in movie theatres in 1917 and intersperses actual film shot at the front and at training grounds in England.

\nOut Of Site presents “Promenade”, a day of live art along the Clontarf walkway to Bull Island on 08 November 2008 from 12:00-18:00. Out Of Site has invited 10 artists to respond to the Clontarf walkway. “Promenade” will use the sheltered bathing and seating areas, the walkway and the sea along the Clontarf seafront to present multiple performances to the public. The name Promenade refers to the walkway, the wandering from work to work and the notion of displaying oneself. As he works the decks, the sound appears to flow from outside the building, through the performance space and back out into the world. \nA figure clings to a metal ladder that rises from the sea. Ascending and descending constantly clinging, holding on, hanging off, gripping, slipping, suspended. The pull of the sea compels her descent: The desire for safety urges her upwards to solid ground. Her only options: up and down or letting go.
\n* Alex Conway – Sonic Glass 1-2pm
\nAlex Conway will present a live improvised sound performance using a bus shelter. He will work with pick ups,water,movement,effects to create a soundscape intertwined with the natural ambient sound of the Clontarf walkway.

\nDominic Thorpe will present a two hour performance where he explores notions of memory. Through multiple tasks of writing and singing the performer challenges himself in his effort to find the place between remembering and forgetting.

OUR WAR – BOOK LAUNCH
\nOn Sun 09 Nov at 13:00 the book “Our War: Ireland and the Great War”, written by historians and edited by John Horne will be launched by Joe Duffy (RTE) in the Royal Irish Academy (19 Dawson Street, Dublin 2). “Our War: Ireland and the Great War” is not only a book but as well a RTE Radio 1 series and the title of a website. The Radio 1 series will be broadcast from 10 Nov on Mondays at 22:00. The website is http:\/\/www.rte.ie\/1918
\nThe book, written by some of our leading historians, tells the story of the Great War in Irish history which saw over 200,000 Irish soldiers fighting It relays the experience of ordinary Irish people during the war and chronicles the effect this war had, and still has, on Irish society. By the way, for all non-Irish people: “Great War” is the name used for the First World War. The Second World War was euphemistically called “Emergency” in Ireland.

CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY – O’CONNELL STREET
\nOn Sunday 09 Nov (This is NOVEMBER!!!) the Christmas Tree lights will be switched on by the Lord Mayor in O’Connell Street. The Festivities will include live music from the St. Andrews Gospel Choir, Ceoltas Ceoltoir\u00ed Eireann, Stone & Jezreel (Rap Artists & Hip Hop Dancers), Marta Natoniewska Burns (Eastern European and Classical Singer & Pianist), Susan Murray (Special Olympians) and Laughter Dance Academy (Special Olympics) There are also strolling costumed characters and lots of family fun. The ceremony will start at 16:00 and will go until 18:00.

PURTY SESSIONS – DUN LAOGHAIRE\/MONKSTOWN
\nJust between Monkstown and Dun Laoghaire the famous Purty Kitchen is located. Since Bad Bobs in Temple Bar was renamed into Purty Kitchen Temple Bar, there is a second pub with the same name, so don’t get confused, I am talking about the one in Dun Laoghaire. \nThe “Big Purty Purty Birthday Party” with special guests is starting on 09 Nov at 20:00 and is free in. PALESTINIAN-ISRAELI HUMAN RIGHTS LAYER – TALK
\nSahar Francis, a Palestinian- Israeli Human Rights lawyer will be in the Irish Aid Centre for a public talk on Mon 10 Nov at 19:30. Amnesty International Ireland invite to this event at the Irish Aid Centre, O’Connell Street, Dublin.
\nSahar is the director of Addameer (Arabic for “conscience”), a human rights organisation based in the Occupied Palestinian Territories who campaign for the rights of prisoners. A Palestinian- Israeli lawyer, Sahar has extensive experience of working directly in support of the victims of human rights abuses in the West Bank. Addameer are currently launching a major campaign on the Israeli policy of administrative detention (internment without charge or trial). Over 800 Palestinians, including children, are currently being held by the Israeli authorities in internment, some since 2002. The talk will be an informative, firsthand account of the key human rights issues in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

CONTROLLING YOUR ASTHMA – PUBLIC MEETING
\nIn partnership with the Asthma Society of Ireland, the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) is pleased announce a public meeting ‘Controlling your Asthma \u2013 Facts to Take your Breath Away’ which will take place on Tuesday, 11 November at 18:30 in RCPI, 6 Kildare Street, Dublin 2. The meeting forms part of the RCPI Public Meeting Series \u2018Promoting a Healthy Nation\u2019, aimed at informing the public on key healthcare issues and to provide an opportunity for the public to communicate their concerns to the College.

‘MANDSCAPE’ PANEL DISCUSSION – THE ARK
\nThe Visual Artist newsletter informs this week about this event: \u2018Mandscape\u2019 is an exhibition of artworks from The Ark’s visual arts collection featuring work by ten leading contemporary artists that was part of the Arts Council Touring Experiment, a groundbreaking project that encouraged children to engage with contemporary art.

THE ARTS AT AIRFIELD HOUSE TRUST
\nThe Airfield House Trust in Dundrum, Co. \nPart II of Moving Worlds: Cinemas of Migration runs from 16 October \u2013 20 November, 2008. \nThe fourth film in this series is “Inch ‘Allah Dimanche \/ Inch ‘Allah Sunday” by Yamina Benguigi (France\/Algeria 2001, 98 min). French-Algerian director Yamina Benguigi brings us a film about “familiy reunion”, the French government’s euphemism for a 1974 law allowing Algerian wives to rejoin their husbands working in France. Zouina leaves her homeland with her three children to join her husband in France, where he has been living for the past 10 years. In a land and culture foreign to her, Zoina struggels against her mother-in-law’s tyrannical hand and her husband’s distrustful bitterness as she adjusts to her life in exile.

MAREK KAMINSKI – POLISH EXPLORER IN DUBLIN
\nIn autumn a number of Polish \u201cva banque talks\u201d will take place in Dublin. They are meetings with influential modern Polish directors, writers, musicians etc. The events are organised with the support of the Consular Section of the Polish Embassy and thanks to Agnieszka and Niamh I found out about them.
\nThe next meeting will be on 14 Nov at 19:00 with Marek Kaminski, Polish explorer. Kaminski is the first man who reached both, North and South Poles in the same year 1995 without external support. In 2004, he completed the same trip with a 17 year old, disabled boy Jasiek Mela. He is the President of the Polish Branch of the Explorer Club. He studied philosophy and physics at Warsaw University. He speaks English, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish and Japanese. Additionally he established a foundation in 1996 to support the exploration of the polar world and other places all over the world. They also encourage people to find out more about ecology and the Polar regions in addition the foundation tries to help young Explorers.

The talk\/meeting is taking place Banker\u2019s Club (IBOA House), Stephen Street Upper, Dublin 8. Admission to all talks is free and there will be a translator so that non-Polish speakers will be able to fully understand the talk as well.

\nThe Spectrums, a great 80s Band that I have heard before and liked will be in The Red Windmill in Phibsboro on Fri 14 Nov at 22:30. Admission is Free! Aoife McNamara is the lead singer in this band and a good few of you know her well. ;-)<\/p>\n

(Hothouse is an Innovation and Technology Transfer Centre at Dublin Institute of Technology. Hothouse draws in entrepreneurial and academic talent, ignites creativity and provides a dynamic environment to fast-track businesses and technologies to commercial success.)
\nThe discussions will be with Brody Sweeney (O’Briens \/ Cafe Bar Deli Franchise Group) on 20 Nov and with Eamonn Fallon (Daft.ie) on 03 Dec. The event is free, but you have to register and it is advisable to do that as soon as possible!

Last week I mentioned that I might give up on the “This is odd!!” category, but then some of you requested to keep it going. Well, we’ll see! :-)<\/p>\n
But I have one for again this week:<\/p>\n
Isn’t it odd, that the people in two countries of the civilised world need to be protected from their inability to keep the hairdryer out of the bathtub, while the rest of the civilised world doesn’t need this level of “care”? Or why is it that only in Ireland and in the UK you can’t have a power socket in the bathroom, but in most other countries you can??<\/p>\n

Not sure if this will work and if it is any use to you, but here is what I intend to do this weekend: On Saturday I plan to go to the National Museum in Collins Barracks for the World War One Day and later to the Out of Site Festival in Clontarf, on Sunday I will probably go to the Lighting of the Christmas Tree in O’Connell Street and after that to the Gardiner Gospel Choir Mass in Gardiner Street. On Monday I will train Krav Maga, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday I will go to the Science Week Lectures and hopefully I will be able to say HI to Ania Witowska at her exhibition launch on Thurs. I would like to go to the Fomacs Film, but can’t do anything. And Thursday is Event Guide night anyway! That’s my plans for the week! Not sure if it helps anybody to navigate easier through this massive list of events (and I even had to leave some out, because after writing on this Event Guide for 12 hours I had to put an end to it!)<\/p>\n

I have to admit that on a scale from 1 to 10 my enthusiasm for writing this Event Guide was this time close to 3. So the writing didn’t flow that easily initially and the excitement wasn’t fully there. BUT it got better when I got into it. So now I hope you enjoy the Event Guide and that my work is of benefit to you. ;-)<\/p>\n
