Hi all!<\/p>\n

I love bank holiday weekends! An extra day of the day job that can be used to enjoy events, how great is that! :-)
\nThe weekend is busy and I think I found an event for virtually everybody. Now it is up to you to make use of all the offers that are out there. I will have a busy weekend, but that is not a complaint at all. Instead it is the great sign that the outdoor season is starting. Next week there will be the Gospel Rising Festival in Bray (http:\/\/www.gospelrising.com<\/a>) and on 24-27 May the Dublin City Soul Festival (http:\/\/soul.ie\/<\/a>), one of my most favourite festivals, will be back.<\/p>\n

With soo much happening in the coming weeks, I will keep my eye on all these free events, but that means I can not focus on spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide much. That’s where you come in! I need you to helpor help a bit more if you already told a number of people.<\/p>\n

The Dublin Event Guide Community is growing every week, but lately there are 5-10 unsubscribes because people are moving away from Ireland. I sometimes get the most heart wrenching mails where a number of times people told me “Please don’t send me the Dublin Event Guide anymore, I love it, but I had to leave Ireland and everytime I get the newsletter, I get homesick.” Tough times for some! But all in all it is a worthwhile experience to work abroad for a while if you grew up in Ireland and for people from other countries, it sometimes just brings forward some plans about going back that were there anyway.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will\/might or would do. This is not a “best of\u2026” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.<\/p>\n

Because a lot of people leave Dublin either to go home elsewhere in Ireland or to leave the country for holidays, bank holiday weekends are often not very busy with regards to events. This weekend is different and you should definitely be able to easily find something to do.<\/p>\n

I will have some Krav Maga (self-defence) training this Saturday (http:\/\/www.kravmagaireland.com<\/a>), so I won’t get a chance to do much then, but if I had time, I would go to the “Physics High Flyer” event and to the Crypt Craft Market. In the evening I might go to the Bray Jazz Festival, but unfortunately I will miss the Mexican Cinco the Mayo Fiesta in Dun Laoghaire.<\/p>\n

On Sunday I plan to go to the Vintage Fair in the Food Co-op and to Art in Action in Phoenix Park. If you want to go to a gig, check out the Workman’s Club gig and the Independent Rock film screening plus live music in the Button Factory.<\/p>\n

On Monday Art in Action is on the plan if I don’t make it on Sunday and I haven’t been in Ikea for a while, so you might find me there.<\/p>\n

Tuesday is the day for the Milk & Cookies Stories in the Exchange, an event that is already popular and is attracting even more and more people.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday the Temple Bar Cultural Trust is inviting to a whole variety of events Europe Day and some are really interesting and finally on Thursday, I would love to go to the TCD discussion about “Greed and the Crisis”. But next week I will be at Gospel Rising in Bray, so I probably need to start the Event Guide a bit earlier.<\/p>\n

SUNDAY TIMES OUTDOOR FILM FESTIVAL – TEMPLE BAR<\/h2>\n

The Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT) in co-operation with the Sunday Times have put together a great Outdoor Film Festival on Meeting House Square in Temple Bar. It will run from 10 May until 14 June and will see a popular movie being screened every Thursday night (Gates 21:45, Film Starts: 22:15). All tickets are free and can be booked online, but you can imagine that they are hot! ;-) As soon as they become available, they are snapped up and once booked out, you will neither get to enjoy the screening nor the complimentary hot chocolate and popcorn which you get on arrival. So, note the list for the upcoming screenings below and put the relevant dates in your calendar!
\nThe first movie on 10 May is “The Wizard of Oz”. It is completely booked out, but the nice people from the Temple Bar Cultural Trust kept one pair of the very much in demand tickets for a competition in the Dublin Event Guide.

GOSPEL RISING MUSIC FESTIVAL – BRAY<\/h2>\n

If you are interested in Gospel Music and especially if you are or would like to get involved actively, this is a Must Go event! The Gospel Rising Music Festival (http:\/\/www.gospelrising.com<\/a>) is taking place for the third years and after Ennis and Portlaoise where the festival towns. This year it is taking place in our neighbourhood in Bray. From Fri 11 – Sun 13 May, Bray is the Gospel Capital of Ireland and Gospel Rising is one of the first music festivals of the season.
\n“Gospel Rising” is a combination of free gospel choir gigs and non-free high quality workshops, giving everyone the chance to experience gospel choir singing.
\nThis years workshops are all listed on http:\/\/www.gospelrising.com\/workshop-details.html<\/a> and even if you have never sung before or are not in a Gospel Choir you can take part and enjoy. Topics and areas that are covered are to improve your soloist skills and styles, join in with large group workshops, experience gospel styles like Contemporary Gospel or Barbershop, and the choreography style this year will be based on the TV show, Glee. You can choose the workshops you like.

The Bealtaine Festival continues. It is a full month of events for the older age group and uses the theme “celebrating creativity as we age” this year. Estimates are that over 120,000 people will take part in Bealtaine. “From dance to cinema, painting to theatre, Bealtaine showcases the talents and creativity of both first-time and professional older artists. \u2026” There is a vast amount of events and the big contribution of the Public Libraries makes this event even a bigger success.

This is unfortunately not an event in Dublin, but this week the Bray Jazz Festival with a whole range of free events will take place and for the people that want even more Jazz, you can directly be part of the “New Orleans Jazz Fest”. Cian O’S. tells me that 40 Sculpture and Media students in NCAD are inviting to a sculpture exhibition “Us and them”. It will take place in the Dlight Studios, 46 North Clarence St, Dublin 1. It will run from 10-13 May with an opening event on 10 may at 18:00 and a closing event on 13 May at 18:00. \n<\/strong>SEAN QUINN – BANKRUPT DUE TO IGNORANCE!?
\n<\/strong>Sean Quinn was one of Ireland’s most successful business people\u2026until he went bankrupt. In 2008 he was the ri chest person in Ireland with an estimated EUR 4.7 bn, 2011 he was bankrupt. He once owned the Quinn Group, which offered Financial Services, Insurances for Car, Home and Health and himself and his family owned at some stage 15% or even 25% of the Anglo Irish Bank. \nThe odd thing is that he now said he was unaware of the corporate structures set up to hold international property assets for his children despite the fact that he swore a document during his bankruptcy proceedings in Northern Ireland outlining those structures. If you read about his conduct and his statements in front of the High Court, you wonder he was just a lucky “wheeler and dealer” and was successful despite his ignorance or if he is just trying to outsmart the court with a performance that is more like acting dumb to get away with dodgy stuff to avoid a possible jail sentence. It seems he had not much clue about what was happening in his company:

Can someone please tell the weather gods that May is meant to be one of the warmest and best-weather months in Ireland!? With night temperatures forecasted to be 2 degrees on Saturday, it seems that the winter-ish climate continues for another while. Irish weather is something I will NEVER get used to, but after living here for a long time, you find ways (mainly warm clothes and umbrellas all year through!) to enjoy the outdoor events anyway! :-)<\/p>\n
