\nFor many years (and by now: many year ago) it was discussed if a free Wifi service should be installed in Dublin. Allegedly Dublin City even tendered for a Wifi solution in 2007: http:\/\/www.mulley.net\/2007\/01\/30\/city-wide-free-wifi-for-dublin\/
\nBut in the end it turned into nothing because Dublin City decided that free Wifi was illegal (based on EU law) \u2026and to expensive: http:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/2008\/0109\/wifi.html
\nNone of these concerns apply to London where a “Landmark deal creates Europe\u2019s largest free wifi zone”. O2 will provide a free Wifi service in Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea. The roll-out will start this month and will be finished by early summer. Maybe Dublin City should talk to the mobile phone companies in Ireland?

BAD NEWS FOR BURGLARS
\nMany of you know that I teach Self-Defence at http:\/\/www.KravMagaIreland.com\/ and in the context of defending yourself and your property, a new law is a welcome clarification:
\nThe Criminal Law, Defence and Dwelling Act 2011 says that residents in a house or apartment are allowed to use reasonable force to protect people in the residence from assault, to prevent the commission of a crime and to protect the property. A person who uses reasonable force cannot be sued for damages by a burglar and will not be guilty of an offence.
\nBy the way: This only applies when you are in a house or apartment, not if an attack happens on the street. On the street a court still would have to assess if the force was used in self-defence or not.
\nImportantly, I am not reporting this here to invite people to defend themselves with force. The reason why I include it is because during our training at Krav Maga Ireland (http:\/\/www.KravMagaIreland.com), we regularly encounter lots of questions about the legal status of self-defence and this new law brings clarity at least in one aspect.

CHRIST CHURCH RESTORED – EXHIBITION – ARCHITECTURAL ARCHIVE
\n11 Jan – 29 Feb: 12:00-17:00 – Irish Architectural Archive, 45 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. – “Christ Church Restored: An exhibition marking the 1870s restoration of Christ Church Cathedral” is taking place in the Irish Architectural Archive.
\nCathedral restorations are often an outcome of concerns for the state of the fabric and this has certainly been the case at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin. The collapse of Christ Church’s nave vault in 1562 required some remedial work and then sometime in the 18th century a long nave-length buttress was added to support the north nave wall and arcade. But in 1829 a sudden alarm during a mass forced the authorities to close the cathedral and to undertake extensive repairs from 1871 to 1878. FIRST FORTNIGHT FESTIVAL
\nFirst Fortnight is a sequence of events and you might wonder why I don’t include the First Fortnight events in the normal day-by-day section of the Event Guide. Well, the reason is because the website is unfortunately quite confusing and anything but clear, so it took me ages to get my head around what they are doing. And then I found out that many of the events are not free, but the event is definitely worth a mentioning and some events are free, so for that reason, I decided to put it in the Dublin News.
\nFirst Fortnight is running from 04-14 Jan and is an arts festival dedicated to promoting mental-health awareness. It offers music, film, theatre and exhibitions and festival is being staged in association with See Change, an organisation that fights against discrimination due to mental health issues. First Fortnight is so named because the first two weeks of the year is a period that is generally perceived to be a particularly difficult time for people who suffer from depression or suicidal thoughts.
\nThe festival is intended to create awareness and to get people to accept mental health issues as normal issues.
\nThe main event will be a concert with Cashier No 9, Le Galaxie and Royseven on Sat 14 Jan in the Button Factory. Tickets are EUR 10.
\nIn addition there are a number of “Therapy Sessions” which take place in the Workman’s Club on 04, 06 and 11 Jan. The sessions feature a mix of poetry and spoken word performances accompanied by live music. Tickets are EUR 5.
\nThen there is theatre in the Project Arts Centre and finally there are some free events.
\nThe free events are a number of exhibitions in the Exchange Dublin in Temple Bar and a “Soapbox Session”. The exhibitions are visual art and photography exhibitions from Sinead McDonald, Lemah42, William Hamilton and Mary A Kelly from 04-14 Jan. The Soapbox Sessions is an afternoon of talks on Sat 14 Jan from 14:30 in the Button Factory. Claire Byrne will host a gathering of well-known voices from Irish cultural and political life to share their ideas and bring their personal interpretation of the subject to life through performance, prose, music and all important debate. The Soapbox Session is also a free event. Seemingly you don’t need to get tickets for the free events.

IRISH PASSPORT CONTROL
\nBefore Christmas I went to Germany for a long weekend and on arrival in Germany experienced the quite normal procedure at the passport control that most passports will get scanned and the result of a search in the passport database determines if you can go on or not. Strangely it always feels uncomfortable even if you know that there are NO problems with your passport.
\nA few days later I arrived back in Dublin and experienced a completely different procedure. Passport scanners don’t seem to be available and for many years the gardai at the passport control in Dublin Airport waved nearly everyone through as long as you could at least show a (closed) passport.
\nHowever, for the last two or three year EVERY single passport is looked at. But what for? Will the garda recognise the name of the arriving criminal when taking a brief look at the passport? Or is he\/she just checking the validity date? In that case maybe somebody should point out to them that most criminals with fake passport would make sure their fake document is not yet expired. So what is it the passport controllers really check at this odd and anything but thorough check?
\nWell, the whole “checking of passports” by looking at them for about 1 second or less, started in 2009 when the gardai of the National Immigration Bureau were protesting against a salary cut. So it is a kind of go-slow protest that has not changed since January 2009! I wouldn’t complain! :-) ) or just give up this nonsensical sub-second “check”.<\/p>\n
