CINDY BISSIG – EXCHANGE DUBLIN
\n18-25 Oct: 12:00-23:00 – Exchange Dublin, Exchange Street Upper, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 – “An empty Canvas, what would you draw, or write?” was the straight forward question asked by swiss artist Cindy Bissig, who left empty canvases in the Exchange to see what she would get, to find out what is going on in the minds of the people. The respond was enormous. After two weeks of cutting, glueing, mix`n maching, drawing and simply trying to get some order into the chaos, Cindy returns with a variety of paintings and drawings Various shapes and sizes. \nAuthor and documentary filmmaker David Malone’s BBC documentary High Anxieties – The Mathematics of Chaos (2008) was the first film to be made about the financial crisis, accurately anticipating the problems that were to unfold in the economy. In 2008 Malone began commenting on the financial pages of the Guardian’s website about the credit-crunch and the ensuing financial crisis under the pseudonym Golem XIV, the name of a military supercomputer in a novel by the same name by Polish science-fiction writer Stanislaw Lem. Malone became a fierce critic of the bank bailouts, arguing that they would lead to huge cuts in public spending. In November 2010 his book about the crisis The Debt Generation was published in the UK. On 21 October Malone will be joined by a diverse panel at NCAD, including members from IDIP (Irish Debt Info-graphic Project), to analyse the current economic situation, focussing on the question: what is worth knowing? This discussion is part of the IDIP research programme, which is developing an online graphic history of the debt crisis in Ireland. CHRIS BUDD – MATHS WEEK TALK – SCIENCE GALLERY

\nIs maths a tame animal, confined to the classroom or university, or is it a wild animal, free to roam in the jungles of the worlds problems? Chris Budd talk will try to answer this question by taking maths on a tour around the zoo. You’ll discover the maths of fish, penguins and many other exotic creatures. Maths will be used to peer inside the brain of a bee and also to soar with the starlings. You’ll even see how maths can help at the gift shop and at the turnstiles to get in. There will be a great mix of maths on show, so bring your imagination! Chris Budd is a Professor of Applied Mathematics at University of Bath.

INTERNATIONAL DISABILITY FILM FESTIVAL

\nAb\u00e4ra is Ireland’s first International Disability Film Festival. The aim of the festival is to celebrate progress made by people with disabilities while increasing awareness and understanding of the many challenges still faced by people with disabilities around the world. In recent years, filmmakers globally have highlighted disability issues through documentaries, comedies, dramatic genres, music videos and animation. The films have been chosen to provoke and inspire you. (Ab\u00e4ra means “shine” in Amharic, the main language of Ethiopia. Ab\u00e4ra implies positive energy, optimism and forward thinking \u2013 like this festival, and the people it is about.)
\nNormally a film festival of this type would cost quite a bit of money if you want to see many films, but amazingly the organisers were able to keep the price to an absolute minimum, so low that I will mention them here, even if the event is not completely free: The Ab\u00e4ra Festival Pass costs EUR 2 and allows you free admission to all festival screenings. \nA new exhibition has opened in the Science Gallery last night. The topic is water and the title is “Surface Tension – The Future of Water”.
\n“The future of water is the subject of tension. Water is both disposable and sacred, a muse for artists and a necessity for life \u2013 a source of healing and of conflict. The earth has abundant water, but only a very small proportion is available for human use. How should this be managed and sustained, and what would a water-scarce future look like?
\nSURFACE TENSION brings together work by artists, designers, engineers and scientists to explore the future of water, playing on its physical properties, its role in politics and economics, and ways in which it may be harnessed, cleaned, and distributed.

BRAM STOKER DRACULA HALLOWEEN HORROR FESTIVAL
\nThe Bram Stoker Dracula Halloween Horror Festival will take place in Clontarf on 22 + 28 + 30 October. The information is not totally clear, so I am not sure if the events “Bram Stoker lecture with invited speakers , St Anthony’s Hall Clontarf” and “Bram Stoker Antique and Collectables Sale of Work St Anthony’s Hall Clontarf” are completely free. The interesting sounding “World Championship 5k vampire Cloak Race” is not free (EUR 20 or EUR 5 for kids), but watching it is free and the interesting aspect is that all participants must wear a cloak. This is a World First and the winner will be declared the real and undisputed Cloak Race Champion of the World. The event on the day start at 09:30. \nHelp Break a Guinness World Record and at the same time Rewrite Ireland\u2019s Story on Mental Health! On Wed 26 October, “See Change”, a partnership of 50 organisations that works to change minds about mental health problems and end stigma together with the Trinity College Dublin Students\u2019 Union (TCDSU), Union of Students in Ireland (USI) and Fighting Words will try to break an interesting Guinness World Record and your help is needed!
\nSee Change will be aiming to beat the Guinness World Record for ‘Most People to Write a Story’ on-campus in Trinity College and 900 people are needed to contribute to the story. Apart from breaking the record, the purpose of the event is to raise awareness of mental health and to send the message that each of us has the power re-write the script on how mental health problems are perceived in society. Some of Ireland’s most well known contemporary Irish writers will be there as well and you can become a published author and at the same time a co-author with these well known Irish writers.
\nFrom 08:00 in the morning until 20:00 in the evening the team from See Change will be waiting for you and all you have to do is to turn up (no pre-booking required), you will then be briefed on the plot so far and contribute one line to develop the story on one giant continuous scroll of paper. STRING MACHINE – CONCERT – PROJECT ARTS CENTRE
\nFri 28 Oct: 20:00 – Project Arts Centre, East Essex St., Dublin 2
\nCo-ordinated by Eamonn Doyle & David Donohoe, String Machine is a collaborative music project which focuses on the composition, development and recording of new work. Celebrating 50 years in Ireland, the Goethe Institut in Dublin commissioned an Irish\/German String Machine project. The project entailed the commissioning of new recorded works for solo stringed instruments by Donal Lunny (IRL bouzouki) and Leopold Hurt (GER Zither). These works were then used as sole source material for two recompositions by electronic artists, Eamonn Doyle\/ David Donohoe (IRL) collobarating with Leopold Hurt and Stephan Mathieu (GER) with Donal Lunny.
\nThe four new works are released on CD and form the basis for a night of collaborative improvisations between Lunny, Hurt, Mathieu and Doyle\/Donohoe.

IDEAL HOME SHOW AUTUMN – RDS
\nFri-Mon: 28-31 Oct – RDS Simmonscourt, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
\nTwice yearly the Ideal Home Show takes place. The spring show was – in comparison to previous years – tiny. Many exhibitors seemingly stayed away and if the trend continues, it is possible that the life time of this exhibition comes to an end. The organisers are combining the Autumn show with a new Ideal Woman show and tickets are valid for access to both exhibitions. THRILL THE WORLD – WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT

\nNext Saturday the Careers Association of Ireland needs your help to break the world record for the most people dancing simultaneously to Michael Jackson\u2019s Thriller, being dressed as zombies. “Thrill The World Dublin 2011” is the name of the international event and it celebrates the joy of Michael Jackson\u2019s music and dance while raising money for good causes all around the world. The Careers Association of Ireland hopes to raise money for people who care in the home for loved-ones who are elderly & frail, seriously ill, people with disabilities and children with special needs. Even if dancing like Michael Jackson is not your thing, come along to this event and watch the spectacle! MOLECULES CHANGED THE WORLD – LECTURE – RIA
\nThurs 03 Nov: 18:00 – Royal Irish Academy, Academy House, Dawson Street, Dublin 2. – The Academy Discourse “Molecules that changed the world” by Professor K.C. Nicolaou will take place. This event, at which Professor Nicolaou will outline a brief history of the art and science of synthesis and its impact on society, is part of the International Year of Chemistry 2011. Professor K.C. Nicolaou is a Cypriot-American chemist known for the total synthesis of natural products.
\n“His research is focused on a specialized field of organic chemistry called total synthesis, which involves the creation of organic molecules from scratch in the laboratory. This process allows rare molecules found in nature to be made in great numbers for study or to serve as the basis for drugs. Or, completely new types of complex organic molecules can be made from simpler precursor molecules. PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
\nLast week before the presidential election and no “This is Odd!” about the presidential election? I know you will find that odd!! :-)
\nWell, there is a reason for it. I will in the next few hours post an opinion on my occasional blog at http:\/\/www.joergsteegmueller.com It won’t be there before late tonight, but you will find it after midnight at the latest. The reason why I am not posting it here is a) because it is too big and b) because it doesn’t really fit in this section. It is my opinion about the candidates and the process and the role of the president not JUST oddities. If you are interested, check it out later. If you are not interested that’s fine too! ;-)<\/p>\n
