Hi all!<\/p>\n
This week I am hopelessly delayed with my preparations for writing the Event Guide. Normally I try to do a bit of work on Tuesday evening, another bit on Wednesday evening and then there is the eight hours through the night on Thursday. This week I had to work for my day job on Tuesday evening and on Wednesday evening and now is Thursday late evening and I am just starting. <\/p>\n
Nevertheless, I will try to report on all the things that will be on this coming weekend and I hope you will find something to do again. The weather forecast is promising, so get out and enjoy Dublin! <\/p>\n
I was at Urban Beach last weekend and it was really good. The sound of water, screaming kids, lots of sand and lots of people and sun it nearly felt like a REAL beach! Go over to George’s Dock if you have a bit of time!!
\nApart from Urban Beach I went to the Circus Festival in Temple Bar, but the weather didn’t play ball on Saturday. I saw the show of Mr Toon and liked it (He disappeared into a giant green balloon. :-) Lots of fun.) However, I think that Temple Bar events on Temple Bar Square or in the Temple Bar Old Town area just don’t have the right environment to shine! The Meeting House Square is great, but the rest. Hmmmm. I have to admit as well that I miss what the Temple Bar Diversion Festival was over the last two summers. It was just BRILLIANT and this year is just no comparison. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not ungrateful, the Temple Bar organisation is doing a LOT more than most other trader organisations, but a comparison does come to mind after the previous brilliant Diversion festivals.
\nAnd a final comment: Dublin City Events. What can I say? As always Dublin City is doing a lot and great stuff, but don’t manage to pull the masses. Viking Festival, Hebert Park Day Out, Urban Garden, always the same. Good event, but the visitors are staying away. I have commented before on the marketing and the advertisement of Dublin City Events and I think the Sea Stallion Departure\/Viking Festival on the same weekend was a great example: GOOD marketing by Dublin Docklands, BAD marketing by Dublin City. LOTS of people near the IFSC, not so many people at the Dublin City location of the Viking Festival. Please go to Dublin City Events, because with visitor numbers like for the Urban Garden, I am afraid that the continuation of such events might have to be re-considered.
\nOhh and something that left me speechless – and don’t ask me who is ultimately responsible for this: Urban Garden is promoting nature, planting of plants, having a garden etc. And I would see definite synergies with a (growing and still a bit struggling) farmers market there. However on the day Urban Garden takes place on Smithfield Plaza, the farmers (without any notice or information at their indoor area in Smithfield) stayed at home. Why? I don’t know! Someone was wondering if Dublin City asked them to stay away. :-O But why? And why did the farmers not at least hang up signs telling interested customers that they will be back the next day or next week? :-S<\/p>\n
Enough ranting and enough about last week. Here are some really great news as well:<\/p>\n
I got another very welcome donation, this time from Padraig S. Thanks a lot! With the recent donations, I will embark on a project in the coming weeks, which should simplify the sending of this Event Guide and will hopefully reduce the problems with Spam filters further.

\nYes a S\u00f3lo Flamenco workshop again! Last week I told you that I got again a free pair of tickets and will surprise the winner with the news tomorrow :-) , so I will tell you the name of him or her next week.
\nIf you ever wanted to try out Flamenco, then THIS is your chance! The workshop is with Felipe de Algeciras, an acclaimed Spanish flamenco dancer, choreographer and teacher. CALL CUTTA IN A BOX – PLAY\/PERFORMANCE
\nLast week the Project Arts Centre made two pairs of free tickets available for this event and the winners are Sarah Quinn and Dolores Pias. Congratulations! I plan to go to this intriguing play\/performance before it is over and if you hurry you can still get the discount that the Project Arts Centre is offering us!
\nListen to his scenario: “You are shown to a room into an office building where the telephone is already ringing. You answer the phone, and you are caught up in a conversation with a voice that has a strange accent. You sit down at a table in front of a computer monitor and your telephone partner sits the same way, 10,000 kilometers away from you. The voice belongs to a call centre employee at Descon Ltd. in Kolkata, India.”
\nThis is the story around the play\/performance of “Rimini Protocol” which is taking place at the moment in the Dublin Docklands Development Authority office, Custom House Quay, Dublin 1 (beside Sean O’Casey Bridge).
\nI still can’t imagine what the play is and how it “works”. But I think that is great! So, give it a go!!! :-) The Project Arts Centre (www.project.ie), in cooperation with the Dublin Docklands Development Authority, is presenting this play and says “..an experience you will never forget: Call Cutta In A Box – An International Telephone-Play”.
\nThe play is taking place from 01 July – 26 July from 14:00-19:00 every day (except Sundays). It lasts just about an hour and will start anew every hour.
\nFor all other Dublin Event Guide Community Members or if you don’t want to leave it to luck, the Project Arts Centre is offering a discount. The shows normal price is EUR 10, but if you quote “EUR 5 offer” when you book over the phone on 01-881 9613, you can watch the play for half the normal price. APPROVAL FOR U2’s CLARENCE HOTEL PLANS
\nThe U2 members Bono and The Edge did finally get the ok to re-develop the Clarence Hotel in Temple Bar\/Wellington Quay. The planning inspector in charge had recommended against an approval, but the planning authority (An Bord Plean\u00e1la) ignored his recommendation, when Bono and The Edge threatened that they will have to close the hotel if they don’t get the ok.
\nThe Georgian Society and other heritage groups had opposed the plan as most of the art deco hotel, and several Georgian buildings, will effectively be demolished. Most of the 1930s hotel, four Georgian buildings, and a Victorian building will be “remodelled” and a huge glass atrium will be built over the new structure. The new Clarence Hotel is intended to become one of the top ten hotels in the world.
\nI am not too sure if another outrageously expensive hotel is needed in Dublin and I have my doubts that demolishing these buildings along the Liffey is a good idea. But maybe they won’t be missed too much? I will have a look at them next time I am at that end. The Clarence Hotel is near the corner of Wellington Quay with Parliament Street. The back entrance is on Eustace Street in Temple Bar. <\/p>\n
You might have heard that Ryanair has announced during the week that after years and years of adding new destinations and increasing flights, they will reduce the numbers of flights this winter for the first time and will even stop flying to some destinations. I looked at flight prices recently and have seen a significant increase. (Actually the flight price is still 1 cent, but the luggage charges and credit card fees etc are so expensive now that Ryanair will see me less!) What surprised me is that a route like the one to Warszawa is being cancelled. I remember last year that ALL flights to Poland even in winter and especially around Christmas were totally booked out and that people were prepared to pay massive prices.<\/p>\n
What is the consequence of less flights and higher prices? For some of us it will mean, we will spend more time in Dublin. But no reason to panic! :-) The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will tell you were all the interesting events happen AND by going to free events, you will save money that you then can invest in a few flights. :-P

FARMLEIGH SUMMER SEASON – PHOENIX PARK
\nI told you last week about Farmleigh House and about the “Farmleigh House Summer Season” full of events. All of the events are free, but all concerts and the Drive-in.-Movies are free, but ticketed. The required tickets for the August events can be requested until 25 July, so if you are interested in any of the events in Farmleigh House, I suggest that you check www.farmleigh.ie, decide what events in August and September you would like to go and then request your tickets for the August events (in about 3 weeks you can start requesting tickets for the September events).

FRANCOISE RIO – ALLIANCE FRANCAISE
\nExhibition. Francoise Rio studied painting at the \u00c9cole Sup\u00e9rieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). She also took classes at l\u2019\u00c9cole du Louvre.
\nFrom 1964 onwards, she travelled the world (Europe, North and South America, North Africa, India and Polynesia). All these travels, impressions, atmospheres are largely depicted in her paintings.

\nSahaja Yoga is a unique method of meditation based on an experience called Self Realization that can occur within each human being. THE ROSE FESTIVAL – ST ANNE’S PARK
\nThis yearly festival in St. Anne’s Park in Raheny will take place on Sat 19 and Sun 20 July (10:30-18:00). It is a Dublin City Event, so to find details requires a bit of detective work, but I was successful. And one thing is certain: the event will be well organised and worth a visit. Here is the invitation: “If you want to spend a weekend with the family exploring the variety of attractions or just have some time for yourself then the Rose Festival is the place to be. There’s something for everyone, beautiful walks, good food, lively music and amazing blooms. URBAN BEACH – GEORGE’S DOCK
\n“Life is a Beach!” is the theme for Dublin Dockland’s Urban Beach. George’s Dock (just behind the main IFSC buildings along the Liffey and right beside the chq building) will be transformed into Dublin’s first Urban Beach. The organiser’s description says “This tropical oasis will be the home to sizzling summer activities for the whole family. Complete with beach cabins, showers, lounge chairs, beach umbrellas, and a refreshment beach hut, the beach will have daily activities to suit everyone’s fancy. Kiddies will have their own ‘baby beach’ area for making sandcastles. Spend lunchtime practising yoga or tai chi, play a relaxing game of chess, try your hand at boules or bocce or just soak in the sunshine. Oh the lazy, hazy days of summer, let’s hope we have some!”
\nI had a look at the Urban Beach while it is still “under construction” and I will definitely go there again over the next two weeks. The “beach” is on the platform in George’s Dock and I am interested to see how the finished scene will look like. An interesting idea! Pity that the weather in Ireland is not the most supportive for such good ideas. The Urban Beach will take place from 04 July -20 July from 12:00-20:00 every day.

FRESH FILM FORUM
\nOn Sat 19 July from 11:00-13:00 the Fresh Film Forum takes place. It is part of the Lights Out Festival, a film festival for young people. If you are interested in becoming a successful young filmmaker, you should attend this forum. “The forum will be hosted by former and current winners of the Fresh Film Festival: Donal Foreman, Helena Doyle, Patrick Ryan, Justine Stafford, Bryan O\u2019Sullivan and Santana Hernandez-Power. SUMMER STORIES DAY – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
\nFarmleigh in association with Children’s Books Ireland presents a fun-packed celebration of tall tales, potty poetry and ingenious illustration for all the family to enjoy! The event is taking place on 20 July from 10:00-17:00. Come and join some of Ireland\u2019s most talented children\u2019s authors, poets, illustrators and storytellers for a day of readings, workshops and performances that are sure to entertain and inspire. Brian\u00f3g Brady Dawson will be reading from her wonderful Danny books, Joe O\u2019Brien will be talking to fans of Alfie Green and those who fancy a giggle will be able to hear Gabriel Fitzmaurice perform his Really Rotten Rhymes. Ronke Arogundade will introduce her audience to the magic of African folklore, whilst storytellers Jack Lynch, Len Graham and Eddie Lenihan will be spinning yarns from closer to home. Niamh Sharkey (I’m a Happy Hugglewug) and Adrienne Geoghegan (Fancy That) will also be on hand to pass on some tips to aspiring illustrators. Staged in locations in and around Farmleigh House, events are suitable for a range of ages from 3-12 years. There will also be a Children\u2019s Bookshop in the Conservatory with a vast array of wonderful titles available to choose from. CZECH MOVIES
\nEvery second week a group of volunteers, sponsored by the Czech Embassy, organise the screening of a Czech film in 33 – 35 Upper O\u2019Connell Street, Dublin 1. The screening starts at 16:30 and admission is free. All films are Czech with English subtitles and are all-time classics and new movies from the Czech Republic.

TOYS OF YESTERDAY FAIR – SANDYFORD
\nThe regular “Collector’s Association Toys of Yesterday fair” is taking place again on Sunday 20 July from 11:00-16:00 in the Sandyford Community Centre (Lamb’s Cross, Dublin 18, Tel: 01 2959149). The event is not totally free, but admission is only EUR 1 and all proceeds go to Focus Ireland. From plastic soldiers via doll-houses to railway sets you can find all these toys form your childhood that you long forgot about. FILM SCREENING – HUGH LANE GALLERY
\nFor the summer the “Classic at Noon” Concerts are suspended, but will resume again in September. In the meantime, however, the Hugh Lane Gallery is continuing their commendable range of educational and\/or cultural free events. On Sunday 20 July a film screening will take place. Starting at 13:30 the National Geographic Film “Last Voyage of the Lusitania” will be shown. Narrated by actor Martin Sheen, this documentary goes beneath the surface to try and shed some light on this tragedy that today still sits on a shroud of uncertainty. ANALOG CONCERTS – GRAND CANAL SQUARE
\nAnalog is a new music festival in Dublin based in Grand Canal Square in Dublin’s Docklands (South Side in Pearse Street). The square will be home to Analog’s Main Stage. Other events will take place in the chq Building near George’s Dock and in the Sugar Club. www.analogconcerts.ie provides the full festival information. There is one concert for which free tickets were available. Unfortunately no more tickets are available. However there MIGHT be the possibility that you get access if the ticket holders don’t show up. How high the likelihood of this is, is something I can’t assess, but you could try it. INSPIRED BY CHOCOLATE! – TEMPLE BAR CULTURAL TRUST
\nThe Designer Mart at Cow’ Lane is displaying newly commissioned work as part of Temple Bar’ Chocolate Festival (25 to 27 July 2008). The exhibition includes chocolate jewellery pieces by Jenni Duggan, Raasay Jones and Ann Tyrrell as well as photography, prints, glass sculptures and textile pieces by Carol Eakins, Katharine Quin, Simon Bradley, Naoimh Tuohy, Mark Lynch, Mark Lynch and Fiona Archibald. All items are on display in the Information Centre, Temple Bar Cultural Trust, 12 East Essex Street from 21 to 27 July 2008 and are available for sale.

DAMB\u00c8 (IRISH\/MALIAN CONCERT) – TEMPLE BAR
\nA night of Irish and African musical celebrations is taking place on 23 July as part of the Documentary Film – Damb\u00e9 – The Mali Project. For one night only Malian, Tuareg and nomadic culture and music will be celebrated with a line up of special Irish and Malian musicians from the film. Artists performing on the night include Afel Bocoum and Alkibar, Liam O\u2019Maonla\u00ed, Paddy Keenan and Tinariwen plus special guest Caoimh\u00edn \u00d3 Raghallaigh. This is a free event and all profits will go towards the Tuareg fund for development Taghreft Tinariwen and the hospital in Niafunk\u00e9 (hometown of Afel and Alkibar).
