URINATION IN DUBLIN
\nIn their wisdom, Dublin City Council has decided to spend EUR 50,000 on public toilets FOR MEN ONLY! At two locations in the City Centre (Camden Street and Westmoreland Street). I agree that urination on the street is a (smelly) problem, but I don’t really see why the pubs should not be responsible to provide sufficient toilets AND I don’t understand why toilets are only provided for men. The Irish Times writes “Dublin City Council said it had no plans to provide toilets for women, as it did not experience problems with women urinating on the city streets.” Well there is a surprise! Imagine! Luckily women are a bit more sophisticated then men. :-o
\nI recently heard a taxi driver talking about another solution that SOME women find to the problem, but I will leave that for another discussion.

FESTIVAL DES BATEAUX – DUN LAOGHAIRE
\nFri-Sun 12-14 Aug: 14:00-22:00\/10:00-20:00 – Dun Laoghaire Harbour & Town Centre. From 12-14 August, the “Festival des Bateaux” in Dun Laoghaire will celebrate the only international stop on French “Solitaire du Figaro” yacht race, a race over 3,390 km. Dun Laoghaire will celebrate with fireworks, music, sights, sounds, foods and joie de vivre of France. The festival features a wide variety of French themed events and attractions. Highlights will include a grand opening ceremony, fireworks on Friday, a festival village with public access to visiting boats, a colourful festival market, a festival stage at Harbour Plaza and a closing ceremony as boats depart on Sunday 14 August. Admission is free. – The Solitaire du Figaro is a solo multi-stage yacht race created in 1970. The unique character of the race, the presence of great solo sailors and it being open to amateurs, has made it one of the most cherished races in French sailing. For 2011, the single-handed sailors will face a 1,695 nautical mile race in four legs. Starting on 31st July the race will set off from Perros-Guirec in France , further stops are Caen, Dun Laoghaire, the harbour of Les Sables d\u2019Olonne and the race will end on 24 Aug in Dieppe.

\nThe Dublin Latin American Festival will take place from Fri 11 Aug until Sun 21 Aug. The festival will bring some Latin American magic to Dublin offers film screenings, a food and craft market, music and dance.
\nIn essence the festival consists of two weekends with Friday-Sunday activities and events. Some events are free, others are not and for some events it is not totally clear if they are free or not. Have a look at the website http:\/\/www.lancifestival.com for some further information. The organisers have a nicer looking brochure put together, but surprisingly you can’t get it from the website. BRAY BETTER THAN DUBLIN?
\nThe Bray Summer Fest is over and it was great! For four weeks, Bray really put on a super festival with lots of bands on the band stand at the sea front every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Not just one, but TWO really impressive fireworks. A Family Day, an Africa Day, a fun fair, some sports events, workshops and a whole afternoon of airshow (plus a day of rehearsal for the airshow). Sounds like a lot, doesn’t it?
\nBray must be BIG!? Or Rich? Well, actually neither! Bray has just about 32,000 inhabitants and while not poor, is definitely less affluent than some parts of Dublin. So, Dublin is about 46 times bigger than Bray and the big industry and shops are in Dublin, not in Bray. But do we have free festivals\/culture\/entertainment in Dublin that are 46 times more than in Bray? Surprisingly not!
\nThere has not been a firework in Dublin for FIVE years. Airshow? Never! Regular free gigs outdoors provided by Dublin City? If we consider the factor 46, then Dublin would have to provide 46×3 days with 3 bands every evening. That would be 138 days of gigs and 414 band slots.
\nSo does that mean Bray is better than Dublin when it comes to festivals and entertainment? It seems so! What do you think about that? Why can Bray do it, but Dublin can’t?
