LIGHTHOUSE CINEMA (SMITHFIELD) IN SERIOUS TROUBLE
\nThe landlord of the Lighthouse Cinema is trying to close down the company it seems. He has applied to the courts to terminate the company that runs the Lighthouse Cinema and on Monday it will be decided if the cinema has to close. The cinema is at Smithfield and not in a perfect location to attract lots of customers. When it opened the re-juvenation and modernisation of Smithfield Square was something that must have given the company behind the cinema enough hope to sign a contract that allows the increase of the rent from EUR 100,000 to EUR 200,000. But Smithfield Square never became the cultural centre it was meant to become. Restaurants, Hotels and shops around it closed over the last years and even the events that Dublin City ran on the Square were first scaled down and then stopped. http:\/\/www.rte.ie\/ten\/2011\/0322\/lighthousecinema.html – Landlords are damaging the cultural life in Dublin and more and more rip the heart out of the city. POINT VILLAGE MARKET TERMINATED
\nSome of you might remember that I speculated that the end of the Point Village Market came just before Christmas when in a surprise move the Christmas Market was cancelled and on top of that the complete Point Village Market was sent into hibernation for the winter. At the time the official line was that it would be back in Spring, but I expected that it might never be back since it wasn’t really a blow-away success. It now has been confirmed that there will be NO Point Village Market for the whole summer of 2011. http:\/\/www.pointvillagemarket.ie\/ The official reason is “major construction work on the Point Village Plaza” but I wonder if an alternative solution would have been found had the market been REALLY successful.<\/p>\n
HIDDEN WICKLOW – NEW SHORT FILM SERIES
\nFor the last 10 years, Sheila Keegan lives in Wicklow Town and she is very passionate about her home. So passionate that Sheila plans a series of short films about Wicklow and has completed the first one. The film doesn’t show the standard sights of a town, but, true to the name of her new blog, it shows the hidden or less obvious aspects of Wicklow. FINDINGS AT MEETING HOUSE SQUARE
\nMeeting House Square in Temple Bar closed on 24 Jan 2011 and it was planned that in June of this year it would be re-opened again. The closure was to facilitate the construction of a retractable canopy (more or less a set up BIG umbrellas that will be able to cover the Square in bad weather and will fold away of the weather is good.
\nI had a look at the site a number of times and was surprised how deep the builders were digging. The area there is very close to the old city wall and the deeper you dig, the more likely it is that you will find “stuff”. And in early March it did happen: As part of the construction processs, an archaelogical examination was carried out and a significant archaelogical find has been made. Now further excavations have to take place and the re-opening of the Square will have to be postponed. The Temple Bar Cultural Trust currently thinks that the summer programme which was planned to start on 15 July will still go ahead as planned. \nBy the way, I have to admit that I am caught between two positions\/opinions. On one hand we should be excited about the find because it might reveal even more facts and maybe secrets about our city. On the other hand a compromise between LIVING in the city and digging it up for archaeological reasons, with the consequence of putting life on hold, is essential.<\/p>\n
DIY EXPERTS WANTED FOR TV
\nVision Independent Productions are working on a TV project for which they want ultimate DIY experts to be the faces of their TV and Web Instructional Series. They are looking for real characters who know what they’re talking about and who can tackle any home improvement job big or small. Kevin Bohan worked in printing for 11 years before dropping out to study Graphic design and illustration. \nOn Sat 26 Mar from 20:30-21:30 this year’s Earth Hour will take place all over the world. During that hour you are asked to switch off any electric light to remind yourself and others about the need to conserve energy and protect our planet. With time zones the light will obviously not be switched all over the world at the same time, instead the Earth Hour is moving around the planet. PROTOTYPE EXTRAVAGANZA – DESIGNING DUBLIN
\nAs spring appears in the City, so too do our prototypes!
\nSince last September “Designing Dublin” has worked on a project called Love the City, focused on Dublin\u2019s City Centre. The team of volunteers has created ideas, invited influencers and opinion leaders, have analysed ideas and suggestions and have used mountains of sticky notes to capture all the ideas on big sticky-note-wallpapered panels. ;-) And now it is time to turn the best ideas into reality. Ideas remain ideas, unless they are tested and applied. So for the past month the team has engaged with residents, stakeholders, workers and visitors to the Markets Area in order to understand their many needs. As an outcome, they have prototyped eight ideas that could bring new love into the Markets Area. (The Markets Area is the area where the Fruit and Vegetable Market is situated on Mary’s Lane and extends to an area on the Northside somewhere between Church Street and Capel Street and between Liffey and Mary’s Lane. IRELAND’S FIRST AERONAUT “RICHARD CROSBY” – LECTURE
\nWed 30 Mar: 18:00 – Minerva Suite, RDS Members Club, RDS, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4. Bryan McMahon will talk about Richard Crosby. The event is free and open to everybody, but advance booking is essential on http:\/\/www.rds.ie\/cat_event_detail.jsp?itemID=959934 Richard Crosbie (1756-1824) is rightly celebrated as Ireland\u2019s first aeronaut. Inspired by balloon experiments in France, he constructed a hydrogen balloon with the aim of flying across the Irish Sea. A crowd of over 20,000 witnessed his first flight from Ranelagh Gardens, Dublin, in January 1785. He organised two further flights in Dublin, from Royal Barracks and from Leinster Lawn, and made a final flight from Limerick in 1786. Crosbie\u2019s adventures enthralled the public and he won the support of influential figures, but he never achieved his goal of crossing the Irish Sea.<\/p>\n
NIGHTS OF NEW MUSIC – NATIONAL CONCERT HALL
\nThe Contemporary Music Centre and the Irish Composers\u2019 Collective have joined forces again to present a second Nights of New Music in the Kevin Barry Room of the National Concert Hall on 30 March. Each night begins with The Contemporary Music Centre\u2019s new music::new Ireland salon series, followed by the Irish Composers\u2019 Collective monthly concert, with a special offer on wine and tapas in the National Concert Hall during the break. The new music::new Ireland salon (18:00-19:00) on 30 March is a feast of contemporary piano works presented by Therese Fahy in advance of a US tour in April\/May of this year. This event is free, but booking is required.
\nThe Irish Composers\u2019 Collective concert, later on the same evening (20:30-21:30) begins with a pre-concert talk at 20:15. It features Manuela Meier, Accordion and Nick Roth, Saxophone performing works by Irish composers Amanda Feery, Piaras Hoban, Donal Mac Erlaine, Emma O Halloran and Matthew Whiteside. \nThe Five Lamps Arts Festival, an initiative of Marino College of Further Education, will take place from 31st March 2011. This festival, which is in its fourth year, is run by volunteers who want to promote the arts in this area of the city. The festival will run until 09 April and most music and community events are free (not the theatre events!). \nThe Ideal Home Exhibition takes place twice a year and the spring exhibition will take place in the RDS from 15-17 April. The exhibition is targeting “home owners and home lovers”, so you don’t have to have your own home to find something interesting there, but the exhibitors are definitely more interesting to people that can make alterations and improvements in their own home than to people renting an apartment. The organisers describe “We have everything you need for your home improvements, extensions, home energy, interior design, room make-overs, gardens, patios, lifestyle and so much more.” The attractive aspect about the show is that you can get free tickets for admission on Friday or Saturday. DEATH OF RESTAURANTS, PUBS, SHOPS AND EVEN CINEMAS
\nYou might be disappointed that your most favourite restaurant or pub or shop closed recently and in the Dublin News this week you can see that even cinemas are affected and in danger. When we hear that another place closed, then everyone immediately thinks of the economic difficulties and blames them. But when you look into it further, you find out that this is only part of the truth.
\nIreland has a very strange rent legislation for commercial properties. Until about 2 years ago, all rental properties had a clause in their contract that gave the landlord the right to increase the rent, but he never had to decrease it. This strange and nonsensical rule is called “upwards only rent”. It was abolished in 2010 for NEW rental contracts, but old contracts are not affected by this change. So, restaurants like the Mermaid caf\u00e9, which closed a few months ago or pubs that were rented for many years already pay in a lot of cases horrendous rental prices because the rent was continually increased. When the Mermaid Caf\u00e9 opened in 1996, the rent was 15,000 Irish Pound (approx. EUR 19,000). At the time only one of the two building parts was used, but even if both had been used, it would have been well below EUR 40,000. When they closed at Christmas last year (2010), the rent was EUR 190,000. The restaurant didn’t get bigger, but the rental price was nearly 5 times as high as in 1996. And since salaries and raw materials increased in price as well, it explains why eating out is so expensive in Dublin. If a main course in 1996 would have been EUR 5, in 2010 that same should have been EUR 25 if we just consider the factor of the rental increase. A main course was not as cheap as EUR 5 and charging anywhere near EUR 25 in 2010 would have been outrageous for most place. So you can see where the problem in this country lies. Restaurants, Pubs, Shops and even Cinemas will close until landlords will be stopped from greedily charging rents that bankrupt their customers. And everyone who is in favour of keeping the “upwards only” legislation should be ashamed! And who is in favour? \nWhat absolutely makes no sense is that the landlord of the Lighthouse Cinema is trying to shut down the Lighthouse Cinema company. Either he has another tenant waiting OR he wants to put all his property into NAMA. Otherwise you would think that he rather takes 100,000 than nothing and gives up on the claim to get 200,000. VERY odd!<\/p>\n
