\nThe gallery is filled with a collection of identical plinths \u2013 a wonderful white, endless sculpture. These structures are commonly used for the display of objects and items, things that demand our attention on top of their isolated, white pillars. But Ceal Floyer\u2019s plinths stand empty, starkly white in a starkly white room, and the objects and items are replaced by a beguilingly simple aural representation of their mass: by isolating one single item from a range of pop songs \u2013 the word thing \u2013 Floyer has assembled a multi-channel playback of dissonant edits, pinging and chiming all over the room. DUBLIN BOOK FESTIVAL 2011

\nThe Dublin Book Festival will take place from Wed-Sun with the weekend full of events in City Hall. Over 60 of Ireland\u2019s leading authors, poets and journalists will gather in Dublin and the festival has been extended this year from three to five days. The core events will be in City Hall in Dame Street, with other events taking place in many other venues, including the National Library of Ireland and the Project Arts Centre in Temple Bar. The programme will feature over 50 readings, debates, book launches, workshops and events for children. GRAVITATION 2011 – MONKSTOWN
\nOn 05+06 March from 11:00-16:00, the Skate Park at the swimming pool in Monkstown (dlr Leisure Services Monkstown) will be home to boards, bikes, blades and beats for Gravitation 2011. Watch the power and skill of skateboarding and BMX displays and marvel at the speed and agility of expert bladers with cool hip hop beats. Internationally recognised names representing Indy, Unabomber and Boarderco, including Al Hooi, Conor Manweiler, Mark Dolan, John Kelly and Mark (Snowy) Brew will test their skills. \nGravitation 2011 is an initiative by D\u00fan Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and will feature demonstrations by experts over the 2 days at the state of the art Skate Park at dlr Leisure Services Monkstown. \nThe first World Book Night will take place on Sat. It is based on a collaboration between publishers, authors, librarians and booksellers and will see one million books distributed to 25,000 givers in the UK and Ireland who in turn will be handing them out to their friends, relatives and complete strangers on the night. Each giver has selected a book from a list of 25 that they really love and strongly recommend \u2013 and think everyone should read.
\nMany of the staff of Dubray Books are among this army of givers and will be leaving their shops at 16:00 to hand out free copies of these wonderful books. HORSE MARKET – SMITHFIELD PLAZA
\nAnd another month over: Every first Sunday of the month, the horse traders from Dublin and surrounding areas come together and sell and buy horses on Smithfield Plaza. This tradition is in place for many many years and after the modernisation of Smithfield Plaza, Dublin City tried to move the market to another location. This has not been successful yet and consequently the horse market is still a monthly feature in the City Centre. Now Smightfield Plaza is to be modernised again and only hald the Plaza is available, which caused some stir since the market on Sunday is meant to be the biggest: http:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/2011\/0303\/smithfield.html
\nThe market starts relatively early in the morning and goes on until all traders have left, which is around 13:00. If you want to experience this somewhat anachronistic event, you should consider coming early (maybe around 09:00-10:00). \nI know that there are concerns about the welfare of the animals and I do know that ISPCA representatives are supervising the horse market and are not happy about its existence. Please note as well that I am NOT suggesting that you buy a horse there or that you support the horse traders in any inappropriate acts. Instead I am only reporting that this event is taking place and that it might interest some of you to watch the trading or the horses. Your presence there or watching the event will not change anything good or bad and does not support the event. In fact, I think that if Dublin City didn’t allow this open and somewhat controllable market, the traders would sell their horses elsewhere where the ISPCA and the police could not be present. So leaving that market in place is probably a good idea and better for the animals than driving the trading into the underground.<\/p>\n

FEMINIST WALKING TOUR
\nSun 06 Mar: 13:00 – Meet at Fusileers Arch, St Stephens Green (followed by a walk through Dublin city) – For the past three years hundreds of people have taken to the streets to take part in the Feminist Walking Tour of Dublin, marking International Women’s Day. Following the enormous success of previous years, this event is taking place again to tell the often forgotten stories of the Dublin women who have shaped the world we live in.
\nAs always the Feminist Walking Tour will follow a new route this year and will incorporate different aspects of women’s history in Dublin and Ireland. \nThe Ink Slingers Creative Writing Hour takes place every Friday at the Irish Writers’ Centre. It is a free creative writing session that is organised and led by the Centre’s voluntary arts administrators. The hour includes writing exercises and prompts to get ideas flowing. “OFF THE STREET” – EXHIBITION CLOSING – DIT LIBRARY

FINNISH CHAMBER CHOIR – UNITARIAN CHURCH + ST. PATRICK’S
\nThe Vir gin Mary Project is a cross-cultural project, in which the Finnish chamber choir Novena and mosaic artist Minna Floman combine music and mosaic art in a unique way. The project culminates in spring 2011 in the publishing of a CD of A
\nCappella choir music, choir concerts and a mosaic art exhibition \u2013 all around the theme Vir gin Mary. The Novena choir will present the Maria repertoire in a concert in the Unitarian Church in Dublin on Sat 12 Mar at 19:00. Novena is the chamber choir of the Swedish Lutheran parish in Espoo, close to capital Helsinki in
\nFinland. During a visit to Dublin, the choir will perform on Friday and on Saturday:

PERSIAN COOKING DEMONSTRATION – SILK ROAD CAFE
\nSat 12 Mar: 11:00 – Silk Road Caf\u00e9 in Chester Beatty Library, Gardens of Dublin Castle, Dublin 2. – A Persian cooking demonstration will take place in the Silk Road Caf\u00e9 as part of the Shahnama exhibition in the Chester Beatty Library. The demonstration is limited to 15 places. It is free and you have to book online from Mon 07 March at 09:30 on www.cbl.ie (see online booking). A limited number of places for people with no computers are available by phone. EQUALITY? WE ARE NOT EQUAL!!
\nDid you hear about the decision of the European Court of Justice regarding car insurances? The court has decided that it is not fair and against the principle of equality to charge difference car insurance rates for men and women. Currently women pay a good bit less than men based on the insurance’s calculation that men are a higher risk than women, but that is now not allowed anymore. The consequence is that the car insurance cost for women will rise. But do you really thing the cost for men will drop? I would bet that the insurances might give a tiny decrease to men, but will charge a massive increase to women and in the end the insurance will pocket a bigger chunk.
\nApart from that, it is ridiculous for a court to decide that men and women are the same. And NO, I don\u2019t intend to discuss the behaviour patterns of male versus female drivers. Instead I find the whole equality idea ridiculous. As a man, I will THANKFULLY never have monthly pains and will never get pregnant and there are many other things that I will be able or not be able to do in comparison to women. As long as these definite differences are there, why does this absurd political correctness that our society has adopted result in us thinking that all should be equal? Sure in many areas women are outright discriminated against and that has to change, but thinking that all people are equal no matter what gender, age, size, cultural or racial background they have is just ridiculous.
\nOh, and you probably know that young men pay significantly more than older men. Will that be the next court case? http:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/2011\/0301\/insurance-business.html<\/p>\n
