August has arrived already, but this week the passing of time feels a little more significant than just turning another page on the calendar.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n

On Wednesday, Glen Hansard died unexpectedly at only 56 in a motorbike crash. He was known and loved as the frontman of The Frames, played Outspan Foster in The Commitments and starred in Once. Together with Mark\u00e9ta Irglov\u00e1, he wrote \u201cFalling Slowly\u201d, which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2008. People gathered in Dublin to sing his songs, share memories and celebrate someone who had become an important part of the city\u2019s cultural life. (His public wake will take place on Monday and his funeral on Tuesday.) Glen Hansard’s death shocked many who encountered his music and experienced his friendly and open personality.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

On the same day, my friend and neighbour Brian Hamilton died at the age of 88. Brian was not famous and he was not always the easiest of characters. He had no family, but he did have a small number of friends friends. There was no gathering in the city centre, no book of condolences in the Mansion House and no national news coverage. His funeral is tomorrow and the people whose lives he touched will be there.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n

Fame determines how publicly someone is remembered, but it does not determine the value of a life. Glen leaves behind music that reached millions of people around the world. Brian leaves behind stories and memories held by a much much smaller circle. Both lives mattered albeit in very different ways and both departures remind us that our time is limited.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n

That may sound like a sad way to begin a Bank Holiday weekend, but perhaps it is also a reason to make good use of this weekend and every other day and to live life as much as we can every single day. Meet people, experience something new and enjoy the music, culture and community that other people have worked hard to create. Dublin and the surrounding area are busy with events this weekend and every weekend. The Bray Air Display today and the Rush Air Display are two standout events, but there is soo much more. Check it out and celebrate life.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

+++ BRAY AIR DISPLAY<\/strong>
\nThe air show in Bray this Saturday is a regular component of the Bray Summerfest. There are some acrobatics and some fly bys and occasionally there are some international air show top act. The latter are missing this year, but if you are interested in a great summer day out and some entertainment in the sky, then this is still a good destination to go to. Parking is pretty expensive and requires pre-booking, so if there is an option to use public transport, definitely go for that.
\nGround entertainment starts at 12:00 and the entertainment in the sky starts at 15:00 and continues until 18:00. \nThe Fireworks on Monday (03 Aug) will also draw a lot of people and you need to plan to arrive early, but it never disappoints and is one of the best fireworks displays in Ireland every year. Sponsored by the Martello Hotel, the first rocket launches at 22:00, but entertainment will already be on site from 20:00<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

+++ RUSH AIR DISPLAY<\/strong>
\nWith nearly the same lineup as Bray, the Rush Air Display on Sunday is a good alternative to the Bray Ais Display on Saturday. However, Rush still have a lot to learn. There is NO information about the start time on the website and NO details about suggested travel arrangements or parking. It might be a lot easier to get parking there than in Bray, but we don’t know for certain. (Last year there was free parking and a free shuttle bus Service.) I would assume a start time of 15:00, like in Bray, but possibly with a slightly shorter runtime.\u00a0https:\/\/www.eventsinfingal.ie\/events\/rush-harbour-festival-fingal-rush-air-display<\/a><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

+++ The Day The World Rocked: Live Aid – Guided Tour <\/strong>
\nEvery Friday at 14:00 and every Saturday at 11:00 a guided tour of the National Photographic Archive Exhibition “The Day The World Rocked: Live Aid” will take place. Live Aid was a world wide event in 1985 when two concerts took place simultaneously in London and Philadelphia with the intention to collect money to feed the world. Many of the greatest Pop and Rock performers of the time took part, from Status Quo to Joan Baez, Queen to Phil Collins and U2 to Madonna. Discover images and stories from Live Aid donated by Bob Geldof to the National Library of Ireland.

\nCheck out the brand new “Humanarium” at RCSI, 118 St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2 It is an exhibition space that will make health sciences and medical research more accessible and will help us to learn how to live longer, healthier and happier lives.

\nEvery week, the Dublin City Council Culture Company organises cultural events in venues in Dublin. They are events in addition to the normal events in museums, galleries and other venues. \nIkea in Ballymun runs a variety of crafting, music and cooking workshops it is always worh checking out. The workshops are free and usually go for 45 minutes. They are always for children, but the age is often not fixed. There are specific Toddler and baby workshops at times as well.
