A major event started this week that has the potential to test relationships, disrupt sleeping patterns and cause otherwise sensible people to make life decisions based on a fixture list. The Football World Cup is underway in the USA, Canada and Mexico.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

To make things even more interesting for European fans, some matches are taking place at rather antisocial hours. Over the coming weeks, many people will spend countless hours watching football and analysing results, tactics and refereeing decisions. Some may even learn the names of towns and cities they had never heard of before. Guadalajara, anyone?<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

And that’s all perfectly fine. Major sporting events can be great fun and bring people together. But while football is taking centre stage, it is worth remembering that the rest of the world hasn’t stopped. Musicians are still performing, artists are still exhibiting, festivals are still taking place and Dublin’s cultural scene is carrying on regardless.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The weather even seems to be making a modest effort to improve again, which should help.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

?+++ Bloomsday Festival<\/strong>
\nFrom 11-16 June, the Bloomsday Festival takes place in Dublin. The festival is based on an imagined day in James Joyce’s Ulysses. So unlike most commemorations, it is not celebrating a historic event, but a fictional one: 16 June 1904, the day on which Leopold Bloom wanders through Dublin in Joyce’s famous novel.
\nEvery year, fans of Joyce and lovers of Dublin’s literary heritage dress in Edwardian clothes, retrace Bloom’s route, attend readings and enjoy music and performances inspired by the period. To outsiders, this can seem a little odd. After all, people are re-enacting a day that never actually happened.
\nThen again, how different is that from Star Wars fans dressing up as Darth Vader or Han Solo? Both groups are celebrating imaginary stories and get great enjoyment out of it. One group uses lightsabres, the other straw hats and waistcoats. Both passions are a little unusual or odd, but are completely harmless.
\nOver the years, I have found that people tend to fall into one of two camps: either you love Bloomsday and look forward to it every year, or you don’t really understand what all the fuss is about. Both positions are perfectly valid.
\nBut one thing is certain: Bloomsday has become a big cultural festivals and there are dozens of events taking place across the city, many of them free. So if Bloomsday is your thing, enjoy every minute of it. And if it isn’t, enjoy watching one of Dublin’s yearly oddities. ;-)

+++ Humanarium at RCSI<\/strong>
\nThe RCSI regularly runs educational events and these talks are usually free. Now they have started a new initiative that is even better. The brand new “Humanarium” at in the RCSI Buiding at 118 St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2 is an exhibition space and cafe that will make health sciences and medical research more accessible and will help us to learn how to live longer, healthier and happier lives.
\nThe exhibition space and cafe is open from 07:30-16:30 from Monday to Friday and 10:00-15:00 on Saturdays. https:\/\/www.humanarium.ie\/<\/a>
\nThe first exhibition is called “Heart: more than a beat”.
