The school holidays have started and somehow that makes me wonder where the year has gone. In a way, it feels as if Christmas was only a few weeks ago. Yet here we are, with summer underway since last week and June marching forward.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

May certainly did a good job. It was the warmest May on record and gave us plenty of sunshine to enjoy. June, on the other hand, seems to have looked at its predecessor and decided not to compete. Looking at the forecast, rain is expected every single day of the coming week. Not exactly the start to summer that many of us had in mind.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Still, this is Ireland, and if we waited for perfect weather before doing anything, we’d spend most of our lives looking out the window. The good thing about Dublin’s event scene is that it adapts well. Outdoor events may require a rain jacket and a bit of determination, while indoor events continue to be attractive.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

?+++ Bloomsday Festival<\/strong>
\nFrom 11-16 June, the Bloomsday Festival takes place in Dublin. The festival is based on an imagined day in James Joyce’s Ulysses. So unlike most commemorations, it is not celebrating a historic event, but a fictional one: 16 June 1904, the day on which Leopold Bloom wanders through Dublin in Joyce’s famous novel.
\nEvery year, fans of Joyce and lovers of Dublin’s literary heritage dress in Edwardian clothes, retrace Bloom’s route, attend readings and enjoy music and performances inspired by the period. To outsiders, this can seem a little odd. After all, people are re-enacting a day that never actually happened.
\nThen again, how different is that from Star Wars fans dressing up as Darth Vader or Han Solo? Both groups are celebrating imaginary stories and get great enjoyment out of it. One group uses lightsabres, the other straw hats and waistcoats. Both passions are a little unusual or odd, but are completely harmless.
\nOver the years, I have found that people tend to fall into one of two camps: either you love Bloomsday and look forward to it every year, or you don’t really understand what all the fuss is about. Both positions are perfectly valid.
\nBut one thing is certain: Bloomsday has become a big cultural festivals and there are dozens of events taking place across the city, many of them free. So if Bloomsday is your thing, enjoy every minute of it. And if it isn’t, enjoy watching one of Dublin’s yearly oddities. ;-)
