May is over and Monday brings the June Bank Holiday and the start of a new month. Looking back, May treated us remarkably well. We had sunshine, warmth and more opportunities to be outdoors than we are usually granted in Ireland. Naturally, we are now hoping that June and July got the memo and will continue the trend.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n

One thing has always puzzled me, though. The June Bank Holiday weekend should be perfect for a major free outdoor festival. People are not away on their summer holidays yet, the days are long, the weather can be excellent and we all have a long weekend. If someone designed the ideal festival weekend, it would probably look very much like this.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

However, year after year, event organisers seem reluctant to embrace it. There are events happening, of course, but for such a promising weekend it is surprisingly quiet. Instead of a big city-wide celebration, we mostly get the regular programme of museum tours, talks, exhibitions, walks, markets and community events.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Maybe one day somebody will spot the opportunity. Until then, we’ll make the most of what’s available and, thankfully, there is still plenty to choose from.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

+++ Women\u2019s Mini Marathon<\/strong>
\nThe 44th Women’s Mini Marathon will happen this Sunday from 12:30. Approx. 29,000 women will take part in this 10km race. 29,000!!! :-o We wish everybody a great day no matter if you run or walk or if you you just support the participants from the sidelines.
\nStart is on Fitzwilliam Street and Finish in Baggot Street Lower. There will be road closures from early morning until 19:00 in some areas. And it is probably best to avoid the Dublin 2 and Dublin 4 area if you can.
