It’s the beginning of May and by now the outdoor event season in Dublin should really be in full swing. And to be fair, we had a few promising days that suggested exactly that. But just as quickly, things have cooled down again and the rain is making a return this weekend. So maybe we are not quite there yet!?<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

I\u2019m still away for a little while and not fully plugged into EVERYTHING that is happening on the ground in Dublin, but I still know where to find all the free events and therefore the Dublin Event Guide is back to normal again. Even if I am a few thousand kilometres away while putting this together.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The weather might not be playing along perfectly, but that has never really stopped Dublin before. Outdoor plans might need a bit of flexibility and indoor options suddenly look a lot more attractive again, but there is still plenty happening across the city.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

So May has started, the season is trying to get going and the events are there either way. Let\u2019s see what Dublin has to offer this week.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

?+++ Dublin City Half Marathon<\/strong>
\nThe Dublin City Half Marathon will take place on Sunday 03 May. The run will start at 08:30 in O’Connell Street at the Gresham Hotel and will finish after 21.1km in Guild Street in the IFSC. The route map can be downloaded on this page https:\/\/dublincityhalfmarathon.ie\/course\/<\/a> The run will finish at 12:00, but expect rolling road closures along the race route until 14:30. Exact locations and times are one the website above. There will be 13,200 participants, so expect a very busy city centre. The event is not free and it is fully sold out, but you are invited to cheer on the runners. Good luck to all participants!<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n<\/strong>The 2026 edition of Phizzfest in Phibsborough will run from Friday 08 May until Sunday 10 May. ?+++ Wilde Stages Festival<\/strong>
\nThe International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival is now called “Wilde Stages” or “Wilde Stages, Dublin\u2019s Queer Theatre Festival”. I am not so sure about the new name. The old name was a mouth full, but the new name is not much better and the short form doesn’t get the message across. To add to the confusion, the website is https:\/\/gaytheatre.ie<\/a>
\nThe festival will have lots of shows, but I only found one free event on 15 May. It is a panel discussion “Queer Theatre: Is there any need for it?” https:\/\/gaytheatre.ticketsolve.com\/ticketbooth\/shows\/873685079<\/a> (Booking required)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

?<\/strong> +++ Bealtaine Festival – The awkward art of naming age<\/strong>
\nEvery May, Age & Opportunity runs the “Bealtaine Festival, Ireland\u2019s national festival celebrating the arts and ageing” as it is called this year. And if you are interested in events for a while you might have seen other tag lines: “celebrating creativity in older age”, “celebrating creativity as we age” or “celebrating arts and creativity as we age” and now “celebrating the arts and ageing”.
\n–
\nAt first glance, this constant re-naming looks odd. As if they don’t know what they want to be. But Bealtaine has a genuinely difficult job.
\nThe festival is aimed at older people, with recent material referring to those aged 50+. But how many 50 or 55 year olds would happily describe themselves as “old” or even “seniors”? Even “older people” feels wrong when applied to someone who is still in the middle of life, working, running a business, raising teenagers, playing sport or starting new projects.
\n–
\nThat is the trap! Say “seniors” and you risk making half your audience feel twenty years older. Say “older people” and some will quietly decide it is not for them. Say “as we age” and it sounds warmer, but also pretty vague. Say “arts and ageing” and it becomes policy-friendly, but less human.
\n–
\nSo yes, the constant renaming is slightly ridiculous. But it also reveals something real: once age is involved, language becomes a minefield. We want to acknowledge later life without reducing people to it. We want to celebrate ageing without making it sound like a condition. And we want to invite people in without first putting a label on their forehead.
\nSo, I have a suggestion! Let’s call it “Bealtaine – Arts, Creativity and Life Experience Festival … for people who are not done yet”. ;-)
\nWhat do you think? Does this new name “have legs”? Is it a runner?

\nThe Festival runs all May, but for the first year with a stronger focus on the last weekend of May. Another change is that for the first year it seems that there are a LOT less free events than in previous years. So I will let you look for the events. +++ Dublin Castle Closed until January<\/strong>
\nFrom 05 May, Dublin Castle, Ireland’s most popular tourist attraction will be closed because of the EU Presidency until 31 December 2026. Since Dublin Castle is an active government site\/venue, it is sort of understandable that they close the doors. But for 8 months? :-o https:\/\/dublincastle.ie\/<\/a><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

?+++ Government Digital Wallet: Share your Views<\/strong>
\nThe Irish Government is currently exploring the idea of introducing a “Government Digital Wallet”, a system\/app that could allow people to store official documents like ID, licences and possibly other credentials on their phone.
\nOn the surface, this sounds convenient. Many countries are moving in this direction and having your documents available digitally could make everyday interactions a little bit smoother, from dealing with public services to verifying your identity when needed.
\nHowever, given Ireland\u2019s mixed track record with digital identity systems, caution is required.

\nIkea in Ballymun runs a variety of crafting, music and cooking workshops it is always worh checking out. The workshops are free and usually go for 45 minutes. They are always for children, but the age is often not fixed. There are specific Toddler and baby workshops at times as well.
