St Patrick’s Day is just around the corner and Dublin is getting ready for the usual wave of green hats, parades and celebrations. It’s the one day of the year when everyone feels a little bit Irish, including a lot of people who have never set foot on the island before.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n

What many don’t realise is that St Patrick probably wasn\u2019t Irish at all. Most historians believe he was born in Britain, was brought to Ireland as a slave, escaped and later returned as a missionary. Not exactly the simple story that is taught in schools, but in a way that makes it even more interesting. Ireland\u2019s national holiday is named after someone who came here from somewhere else, which actually fits the country quite well.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

St Patrick’s Day has become a huge event, especially in Dublin and not always in the quiet and reflective sense. Between the crowds, the noise and the celebrations, it’s easy to forget that there is more to the city than one big day in green. The good news is though that the festival brings LOTS of cultural events, performances and exhibitions that are worth a look and many of them are free.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

So you can join the madness, avoid it completely or find a middle ground somewhere in between. This week is a good one to explore what else is happening around the city. As always, there is plenty going on if you know where to look.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nThe St. Patrick’s Festival takes place from Sat 14 March until Tuesday 17 March this year. On 17 March is a public holiday, but on Monday (16th) for many it is just a normal working day. \nThere is not only one St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin. Many suburbs have their own parade, but the one in Dublin City is obviously the biggest, most colourful, with many marching bands … and with a huge amount of spectators. If you want to see the parade fully, you need to arrive early otherwise you stand behind a wall, 4 or 5 or more people deep and you will only see the high floats and hear the marching bands. For a front row position, you will probably have to be there at or before 10:00.
\nThe parade will leave Parnell Square at 12:00 and will be in Dame Street up to an hour later.
\nAfter the parade, I suggest that you either go directly to the Ceili More on the street outside the National Gallery (Merrion Square West) or leave the city centre completely. Unfortunately city centre and Grafton Street area often gets quite messy after the parade.

\nEvery week, the Dublin City Council Culture Company organises cultural events in venues in Dublin. They are events in addition to the normal events in museums, galleries and other venues. All events are free, but access is by registration only. And these events are POPULAR!! So when I get to checking them out on the Friday before they take place, the most interesting ones are usually already booked out. \nIkea in Ballymun runs a variety of crafting, music and cooking workshops it is always worh checking out. The workshops are free and usually go for 45 minutes. They are always for children, but the age is often not fixed. There are specific Toddler and baby workshops at times as well.
