This week\u2019s Dublin Event Guide (For Free Events) is a small but satisfying milestone: It is edition 950. No fireworks, no special logo and no big retrospective, just another reminder that this guide has been showing up week after week for a long time. Quietly, consistently and still focused on the same idea: That Dublin has plenty to offer without needing any\/lots of money.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Coincidentally, we are also approaching what some marketing departments like to call “Blue Monday”, supposedly the most depressing day of the year. It sounds very scientific until you look a little closer and realise it was invented to sell things. There is no data-backed emotional cliff we all fall off on a Monday in January. Just a clever story that stuck.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

January can be cold, dark and a bit dreary, but turning one specific day into a universal low point doesn\u2019t really help anyone. If anything, it distracts from the fact that how a week feels usually has more to do with sleep, movement, company and small moments of enjoyment than with a label on a calendar.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Which brings us back to why this guide exists. Free talks, walks, exhibitions, music and community events don\u2019t fix everything, but they do offer reasons to leave the house, shift perspective and feel connected to the city you live in. And after 950 editions, that still feels like a worthwhile thing to keep doing.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

+++ TRADFEST 2026<\/strong>
\nEvery January the Tradfest happens in Dublin. This year it will run from Wed 21 to Sun 25 January and there will be Traditional Irish Music events in all four boroughs of Dublin (Dublin City, South County Dublin, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown and Fingal). There will be non-free events, but you will also be able to enjoy the Tradfest for free with gigs at the Dublin City Sessions (https:\/\/tradfest.com\/dublin-city-sessions\/<\/a>), the Smithwick’s Sessions in pubs and hotels in Temple Bar (https:\/\/tradfest.com\/smithwicks-session\/<\/a>) and the Smithwick’s Sessions Fingal in 10 pubs across Fingal (https:\/\/tradfest.com\/smithwicks-session-fingal\/<\/a>).

+++ LIVE AID EXHIBITION<\/strong>
\nLive Aid was a two-venue benefit concert and music-based fundraising initiative held on the same day on Saturday 13 July 1985 in Wembley Stadium in London and in the John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. The event was organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for relief of the devastating 1983\u20131985 famine in Ethiopia. The charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” in December 1984 was the start of the project. Live Aid was HUGE and had an estimated audience of 1.9 billion people in 150 nations.
\nSome of the performers at the concerts were U2, Phil Collins, David Bowie, Queen, Dire Straits, The Who, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Bob Geldof, String, Elvis Costello, Sade, Boomtown Rats, Status Quo, Spandau Ballet.
\nThe National Library of Ireland is showing 70 photos and images from this decade-impacting, momentous event at an exhibition in the National Photographic Archive, Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2, D02 WF85.
\nThe exhibition will be on display at least until March, possibly longer and will be open from 10:00-16:00 every Monday to Sunday (last admission 15:30). Admission is free.

\nEvery week, the Dublin City Council Culture Company organises cultural events in venues in Dublin. They are events in addition to the normal events in museums, galleries and other venues. \nIkea in Ballymun runs a variety of crafting, music and cooking workshops it is always worh checking out. The workshops are free and usually go for 45 minutes. They are always for children, but the age is often not fixed. There are specific Toddler and baby workshops at times as well.
