If your inbox looks anything like mine this week, you could think that Black Friday had turned into a national holiday. Every shop seems convinced that we were just waiting for their amazing offer to grab a bargain and the emails arrive with the urgency of a breaking news alert.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The odd thing is that here in Ireland we get all the sales hype but none of the celebration that triggered Black Friday. You probably know that it got its name from shopping streets in the USA being so full on this shopping day after Thanksgiving that they were black with people.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

But we don’t have Thanksgiving to ease us in. We jump straight from Halloween decorations to Black Friday offers and then then tumble headfirst toward Christmas.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Christmas lights are on in the streets, food shops are full of turkeys, Christmas trees are sold in some supermarkets and one of the bigger supermarkets in Dublin was so full and so manic last weekend that you could have thought it is the weekend before Christmas.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n

Last week added another layer to the confusion. Temperatures dropped to an unseasonably cold one degree and suddenly it felt as if winter had arrived all at once. Winter officially starts in a week and we already had to scratch frost from car windscreens. If this is the “warm-up” for winter, we are in for an interesting season.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

But despite the rush, the noise and the early winter chill, there is still plenty happening in Dublin that has nothing to do with sales or shopping. If anything, this is the perfect time to step away from the inbox, wrap up warm and enjoy what the city offers for free.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

+++ TWINKLETOWN – CHRISTMAS VENUE<\/strong>
\nTwinkletown is not brand new, but it is a different from last year. You might remember that last year there was an ice rink and an ice museum and a ferris wheel.
\nWe are told that Twinkletown 2025 will be very different. The ice museum is gone, the Christmas Market is much bigger and there will be the Spiegeltent for shows and gigs and a “Santo Panto” live show.
\n“Twinkletown” will officially open on Friday 28 November and will run until Sunday 04 January. Weekday opening hours will be 11:00-21:00 and at weekends the event is open from 10:00-21:00.
\nThe Christmas Market is free and no tickets are required, all other features are not free. Last year people complained about the high prices of food and drink, but that is unfortunately an issue at every festival an event nowadays.
\nThe other complaints were about the ice skating prices. The prices are EUR 20.16 for adults and EUR 16 for children (12 and younger) for 45 minutes. Twinkletown will be on Smithfield Plaza.

+++ DUBLIN LOVES CHRISTMAS AT RDS<\/strong>
\nAnother one of this year’s Christmas Markets and Christmas Event venues with a a Bavarian Market, a Spiegeltent, ice rink and fun fair rides is “Dublin Loves Christmas” at the RDS in Ballsbridge. And it will run from Saturday 15 Nov until 23 Dec. The “Bavarian Market” opens at 12:00 each day. https:\/\/www.dublinloveschristmas.ie\/<\/a><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

+++ HUGH LANE GALLERY CLOSED – for 3 years!!<\/strong>
\nIf you enjoy art in Dublin, take note! The Hugh Lane Gallery on Parnell Square has closed its doors on 28 September 2025 for a major refurbishment. And the closure is expected to last a crazily long three years.
\nDuring the works, the historic 1930s wing of Charlemont House, the home of the Hugh Lane Gallery, will be upgraded to full modern museum standards, with improved environmental controls and security and the building will be connected to the new city library that is planned for Parnell Square.
\nThe collection \u2014 including the always-fascinating Francis Bacon studio \u2014 will be packed and protected during the closure and the gallery plans to continue some outreach and off-site programming while the building is being transformed.
\nThree years without the Hugh Lane will be a huge cultural gap and the surprising thing is that the gallery has been closed despite the fact that the tender for the building works has not even been issued.
\nThis is unfortunately another long-term closure of a museum in Dublin since the National History Museum closed on 01 September 2024 and will be closed for “several years” without an indication for a re-opening date.

\nIkea in Ballymun runs a variety of crafting, music and cooking workshops it is always worh checking out. The workshops are free and usually go for 45 minutes. They are always for children, but the age is often not fixed. There are specific Toddler and baby workshops at times as well.
