So, Dublin had a real good thing at Christmas: A proper Christmas market that looked nice, was in a beautiful location, had the amount of food vs stalls that a Christmas market needs (always a lot more food than stalls, even if some don’t like it), was hugely popular and got better from year to year.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

And what happens next? It will be cancelled!<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

You might have heard that the “Christmas at the Castle” market was cancelled by the Office of Public Works (OPW) for 2025 and 2026. Yes, I do get that Dublin Castle is not just a pretty place, but is an active state venue that is needed for official business like the recent inauguration of the Irish President and many events during Ireland’s EU presidency in 2026.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

That presidency runs until 31 Dec 2026 and since Ireland doesn’t (seem to) have any other venues where official events can take place in December 2026. MAYBE there is no way around a cancellation in 2026. But whatabout 2025? Do we have to practise in December 2025 for the EU Presidency in 2026??<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

I know, there will be some other Christmas venues that will have some stalls near the main feature, an ice rink. At the RDS and on Smithfield Plaza will be these two “markets”. But after a pretty bad first year of “Christmas at the Castle” and years where tickets were needed to go to the market (a silly decision that totally failed), we JUST got into a good groove.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Waterford, Belfast, Galway and Cork all do much better than Dublin! I guess we have to suggest to tourists and our friends to go in the pre-Christmas period to the towns that know how to run a Christmas Market and need to do so ourselves too. Embarrassing for Dublin!<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

+++ DUBLIN LOVES CHRISTMAS AT RDS<\/strong>
\nOne of this year’s Christmas Markets and Christmas Event venues with a a Bavarian Market, a Spiegeltent, ice rink and fun fair rides is “Dublin Loves Christmas” at the RDS in Ballsbridge. The event intended to open on Saturday 15 Nov and stay open until 23 Dec. However, the organisers decided to delay the opening due to the storm warning this weekend. The storm warning finishes at 12:00 on Saturday, but for some reason the event website doesn’t suggest when the event might open. So you will have to check at https:\/\/www.dublinloveschristmas.ie\/<\/a> to find out from when the event is open to welcome you. I will add the event (admission is free) to the event listings from next weekend because of that.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

+++ HUGH LANE GALLERY CLOSED – for 3 years!!<\/strong>
\nIf you enjoy art in Dublin, take note! The Hugh Lane Gallery on Parnell Square has closed its doors on 28 September 2025 for a major refurbishment. And the closure is expected to last a crazily long three years.
\nDuring the works, the historic 1930s wing of Charlemont House, the home of the Hugh Lane Gallery, will be upgraded to full modern museum standards, with improved environmental controls and security and the building will be connected to the new city library that is planned for Parnell Square.
\nThe collection \u2014 including the always-fascinating Francis Bacon studio \u2014 will be packed and protected during the closure and the gallery plans to continue some outreach and off-site programming while the building is being transformed.
\nThree years without the Hugh Lane will be a huge cultural gap and the surprising thing is that the gallery has been closed despite the fact that the tender for the building works has not even been issued.
\nThis is unfortunately another long-term closure of a museum in Dublin since the National History Museum closed on 01 September 2024 and will be closed for “several years” without an indication for a re-opening date.
