September is here and with it the temperatures have dropped. We were lucky this year: The summer months were warm and enjoyable without ever really tipping into extremes. But now there’s no mistaking that summer is starting to give way to autumn. This is the time though, were in a last rebellious effort, the sun might gift us a bit of an “Indian Summer” in early September, a few days with untypically warm weather. As legend (and experience) goes, this normally happens when the kids are back in school and therefore can’t enjoy it fully anymore.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

This weekend is the weekend of the exodus to Stradbally for Electric Picnic, the last big outdoor music festival of the summer. Thousands of people will make their way down for three days of music, art and maybe muddy wellies and it always signals the close of the main festival season.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

With so many heading out of town, the number of events in Dublin dips ever so slightly. But don\u2019t worry, I still found a great selection of free cultural happenings to keep you entertained.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

September can be a strange in-between time \u2013 not quite summer, not quite autumn \u2013 but it\u2019s also a great moment to catch your breath and soak up what the city has to offer. The crowds are smaller, the pace is steadier and there\u2019s often a gentle energy to events this time of year. It\u2019s the perfect chance to discover something new or revisit a favourite spot without the bustle of the peak summer rush.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

+++ Sculpture in Context Exhibition<\/strong>
\nThe brilliant “Sculpture in Context” exhibition is returning to the National Botanic Gardens. In its 40th year, the exhibition will run from 04 Sept until 10 Oct.
\nFor this special exhibition, big sculptures will be set up right in the middle of the Botanic Gardens, surrounded by vibrant plants and gorgeous natural views. +++ Not a fan: Dublin City Ceol Country<\/strong>
\nDublin City is running a Irish Country music event in Collins Barracks this weekend. And I am not fa not this event. But not for the reason you might expect. Music taste is very subjective and while Irish Country music is not really my thing, I know that there are plenty of people in Ireland that love it. So I have no problem at all with the music choice at this event. Live and let live!
\nThe aspect that I don’t like is a different one: Before that virus impacted our lives for a number of years, Dublin was FULL of free events. Most pubs organised free events at least on some nights every week. And Dublin City ran or supported a whole range of free events. There once was a Viking Festival and a Skateboard Festival (Street-Culture Festival) and the Kite Festival and many more. But since the lockdown years many more pubs charge admission fees and Dublin City has reduced their large scale events.
\nThe Dublin City Ceol Country event is an event that would be great for everyone. But Dublin City came up with the idea to charge EUR 6 per day and per person (incl. booking fee). EUR 5 is not a huge amount, but it ads up if you go there with a family and then spend money on food and drink etc. And at the same time it doesn’t make a huge dent in the cost of organising the event.
\nMinus cost for ticketing platform and credit card fees, the income might be EUR 4.50 per person. I am not sure how many people fit on Clark Square in Collins Barracks, but if we assume it is 2,000, then Dublin City will make EUR 18,000. At the same time, Dublin City is taking EUR 620,000 PER DAY for East Link and West Link (M50) tolls from us, for the use of bridges that have long been paid by us.
\nThe event in Collins Barracks and the tolls have no direct link, I know, but 18,000 is pocket money for Dublin City. and therefore it is my opinion that they should either charge a full concert ticket price from attendees or make the event free.

\nEvery week, the Dublin City Council Culture Company organises cultural events in venues in Dublin. They are events in addition to the normal events in museums, galleries and other venues. All events are free, but access is by registration only. And these events are POPULAR!! So when I get to checking them out on the Friday before they take place, the most interesting ones are usually already booked out. \nIkea in Ballymun runs a variety of crafting, music and cooking workshops it is always worh checking out. The workshops are free and usually go for 45 minutes. They are always for children, but the age is often not fixed. There are specific Toddler and baby workshops at times as well.
