Back in June 2007, I sent an email to 10 friends about some great free events happening in Dublin. Little did I know that I had just signed up for a lifetime commitment… or at least 900 weeks of non-stop event hunting! ;-)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Since then, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) has grown to 24,000 email subscribers and 83,000 Facebook followers, all united by a love of Dublin\u2019s incredible free cultural scene. Every week, I spend around 14 hours (mostly through the night on Fridays\u2014yes, I\u2019m questioning my sanity too! ) searching, writing and putting it all together.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

+++ Lunar New Year 2025<\/strong>
\nThe Chinese New Year, or as we call it for the last 2 or 3 years, the Lunar New Year will start on Wednesday 29 Jan and there are a good few events every year to celebrate this big event. The coming year is the Year of the Snake and you find all events for the Dublin Lunar New Yer at https:\/\/www.dublinlunarnewyear.ie\/events\/<\/a> Happy New Year! The main event in Dublin on Meeting House Square in Temple Bar will be on Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

+++ IMBOLC but not Spring!<\/strong>
\nToday, on 01 Feb is Imbolc, a Celtic Festival that marks that middle point between winter solstice and spring equinox. It is also St. Brigid’s Day, but there is some controversy over whether St. Brigid even existed.
\nPagans and Celts celebrated Imbolc and they also celebrated the first day of the year on our 31 October, at Halloween or in Celtic terms, Samhain. And their day started at sunset not at what we call midnight.
\nThe celts did not define seasons like we do and their seasons were not guided by weather as our meteorological seasons are.
\nThese are all facts, but then something went wrong in Ireland and kids were taught a mighty mess of things and even today, primary schools teach the incorrect information that spring starts on 01 February.
\nThe Irish Met Service is trying for years to correct this…unsuccessfully. https:\/\/www.met.ie\/climate\/climate-of-ireland<\/a> (look for “Meteorological Seasons”)
\nMeteorologically, spring starts on 01 March and astronomically it starts on 21 March. Spring does not start on 01 February no matter how you turn it. (Imbolc is not the same as the start of spring.)
\nBut I know that the wrong primary school teachings are so deeply ingrained that many people in Ireland struggle with the fact that spring only starts a month later.
\nIf you are one of them, don’t worry, you got over the fact that Santa and the tooth fairy are not real. ;-) And if nothing can change your mind then that is also ok. The world will continue turning either way. ;-)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
