A harmless, silly St. Patrick’s Day Facebook post by me, triggered the biggest sh**tstorm the Dublin Event Guide ever experienced, but it also caused the biggest reach of a Facebook post on our page.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

And there is a learning from this: AI still triggers totally irrational fears in people and instead of panicking or believing fear mongering, I would strongly recommend that everyone informs themselves thoroughly. After St. Patrick’s weekend, we should get going with the outdoor season, but it still is so cold in the evenings. Just 4 degrees last night! I am ready for summer and I am just hoping that it won’t take much longer until the temperatures rise.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Friday 29 March is the Friday before Easter and therefore is “Good Friday”. Ireland as a formerly strongly catholic country has a surprisingly distrubed relatioship with Good Friday. It is a Bank Holiday, bu tnot a Public Holiday. Nevertheless there are a good few companies that give the day off. Others force their employees to take the day off but take the day from the general holiday allocation. And for most companies it is just a day lake any other Friday.<\/p>\n

Regarding events it is definitely not a “normal” Friday. There are a lot of less events.
\nFor the ones that need it: Alcohol is allowed to be sold in Ireland even on Good Friday now, but this is only the case since 2022!<\/p>\n

+++ The St Patrick’s Day Post that turned people to see RED<\/strong><\/p>\n

There I was, posting a harmless (I thought!) Happy St. Patrick’s Day post on Facebook last week and it turned into the biggest sh**storm the Dublin Event Guide ever saw. :-o<\/p>\n

–<\/p>\n

I was called b**tch (replace ** with it) and c***face (replace *** with unt) and even had to block a person because she got so unhinged.<\/p>\n

–<\/p>\n

What did I do? I posted a picture with my “Happy St. Patrick’s Day” that showed a scene of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Dublin. The picture was a little ridiculous, but that was not the biggest problem. The biggest problem was that the picture was created by AI (Artificial Intelligence). This little fact got about 50 people get so angry that they decided to express their anger on Facebook.<\/p>\n

–<\/p>\n

They accused me of being cheap for not paying an artist to provide a picture. And you know what? I AM cheap that way! I ask for and get donations from you, the much appreciated readers of the Dublin Event Guide and I am looking after your money well! The only cause it will be used for is to keep the Dublin Event Guide running. I will not waste it on an illustration of a Facebook post. I will get illustrations for free and use your money where it counts!<\/p>\n

All in all there were 108 comments (not all negative) and some were VERY angry. But there were also 931 Thumbs Up and 246 Hearts, so the 108 were LOUD, but they disappear in the pool of supporters.<\/p>\n

Interestingly the AI Art kills artists statement was a common theme (that is totally incorrect in this general way) and also a common theme was that many of the people complaining showed in their Facebook Profile that they were either artists themselves or are affiliated with art-related organisations.<\/p>\n

–<\/p>\n

Yes, AI Art will replace cheap art and bad art and some people might even lose their income. But AI will never replace (good) art. There won’t be a single art gallery or museum that will close because of AI. If I want a piece of art on my living room wall, I will buy it from an artist. But if I want a silly little illustration for a Facebook article, I have NO hesitation to use a picture that was generated for free by AI.<\/p>\n

–<\/p>\n

A handful of people thought they should “hurt” me even more and told me with glee that they have blocked the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page. THEIR loss!<\/p>\n

But there is also a flipside to this anger on St. Patrick’s Day. Normally the weekly Dublin Event Guide post is seen by between 6000 and 15,000 people. This time – thanks to all the angry people – it was seen by 55,386 people. Wow!<\/p>\n

–<\/p>\n

What do we learn from this? If Facebook Reach is important to you. Angry readers are the best thing that could happen to you.<\/p>\n

–<\/p>\n

What else did I learn from this? I need to do more to explain to people what AI is and where the benefits and the risks are, because the emotionally charged misinformation is HUGE.<\/p>\n

And a final thought: When horses were replaced by cars, some blacksmiths who made horseshoes lost their jobs. That didn’t lead to the eradication of the job, but it did required some adaptability. Progress is unstoppable and like it or hate it, AI is progress. If you think your job\/area will be affected remain adaptable.<\/p>\n
