On Monday the traffic rules for College Green (the street at the entrance to Trinity College) will change. The current private car ban from 07:00-19:00 will be extended to 24 hours. What do you think about that? Is it a good idea or a bad idea?<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Most car drivers probably think it is a bad idea, especiall if they have used this route often in the past,\u00a0because it is getting\u00a0harder and harder to get anywhere in a car in Dublin City.<\/p>\n

Most pedestrians and cyclists think it is a good idea, for understandable and obvious reasons. I think it is a really bad idea, but not because I am a car driver! Hear me out!<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Many years ago, Grafton Street and Henry Street were normal streets with cars in it and pedestrianisation must have been a HUGE change even with the smaller number of cars back then, but today nobody would ask for a de-pedestrianisation of these two streets. So, getting cars out of the City Center does make a lot of sense even if it inconveniences us right now.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n

But imagine you strolled down Grafton Street and suddenly a bus was behind you trying to get by. Or a taxi beeped because it wanted to zip down the road? Or possibly even worse: An irresponsible cyclist raced through, with complete disregard for pedestrians.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

That would be seriously dangerous, right? Yes! And that is – as far as I understand – what will happen at College Green. Taxis, Buses and Cyclists are still free to use the street, so it is NOT given over to pedestrians. That’s a bad idea! Streets should be either with motorised vehicles or without. All or nothing!<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
