This weekend I am away for the first time since December 2019. It took 2.5 years since I last saw my parents and at their age, this is very precious time, so I hope it is ok with you that the Dublin Event Guide will be a little slimmer today.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Not that I would leave you stranded, I wouldn’t do that! ;-) But some events, like the Bikeweek that is taking place this coming week, will only be mentioned as a summary event and you will have to look up the individual events and a few of the events during the week didn’t make it in.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

By the way, the biggest impediment to providing you with an even better Dublin Event Guide is still the fact that Facebook completely messed up their event listings since the last layout change. I would LOVE to talk to someone in Facebook about that, but as you probably know, Facebook doesn’t talk to us unwashed people. :-(<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Before the layout change, the Facebook event listings were fully searchable and consequently they were used a lot by event organisers of all sorts. Since the layout change (and that was quite a long time ago) you can’t search for events in Dublin anymore, but you have to specify in what category you are searching and there are MANY categories. And if there is no good search, then events are not easily found and event organisers will give up on posting their events.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

I really don’t get how Facebook thinks they will maintain their market share and their active users long term. Sure in the short term people will still be around, but there will be competitors and unless they buy them all, they will undoubtedly take users away. And if you think that will never happen, then remember Bebo (if you are old enough!!! ;-) ).<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Last week there were no donations. Not a big problem, because as the donation counter tells you, you donated currently enough to pay for the next bill. But with NO donations and VERY little engagement on the Facebook post, providing this weekly service, sometimes feels quite lonely and the question “Is anybody out there?” easily comes to mind. :-O<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

+++ Culture Date with Dublin 8 – Festival<\/strong>
\nThis Dublin 8 based weekend of events is a great destination this Saturday and Sunday. All events on Sunday are free and on Saturday only one event is not free. On Saturday, both St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Christ Church will be free for self-guided tours. At Goldenbridge Cemetery and the Irish National War Memorial Gardens, free tours will take place. Marsh’s Library, next to St. Patrick’s Cathedral will be pan and admission is free. There will be free walking tours, guided tours at the War Memorial and in the Irish Museum of Modern Art and there will also and a children tour in Kilmainham Gaol. Even a market, the Twilight Market, from 14:00-20:00 on Saturday at the Digital Depot with 50 stalls will take place. \nTogether with LOTS of other festivals, Saturday and Sunday are also the main days of Phizzfest 2022 in Phibsborough. +++ COMPETITION: Gospel Rising Music Festival – Ticket Competition<\/strong>
\nDo you know about the Gospel Rising Music Festival? A great group of people organise this amazing Gospel Music Festival every year (with a bit of a break due to some global health issue recently) for the last 10 years or so. I was at the festival myself a few times and ran a workshop at the last festival three years ago.

\nA brand new event during the festival is the “Know Your Lyrics – Gospel Rising Music Game Show” in The Sugar Club. It will be lots of fun: Two teams compete to pick the right lyrics of well known gospel music songs. Led by their host and with the help of the audience, two fantastic piano players will captain their team of gospel singers through a series of rounds against the clock to guess the hidden song lines. Remember the “Lyrics Board” on RTE? Yes, there are some similarities! ;-)

+++ International Literature Festival Dublin<\/strong>
\nThe International Literature Festival Dublin takes place from 19-29 May and for the first time, the main Festival site will be Merrion Square Park. There are also some additional events in other venues (e.g. Oscar Wilde House, National Gallery, Irish Architectural Archive and the Trinity Long Room Hub) all in the neighbourhood of Merrion Square. In Merrion Square, five tents will be the locations for all the events. The organisers tell us that in addition to the non-free events, “We also cater for a limited number of free drop-in events.”, but I wasn’t able to find these free events easily and in the end gave up. +++ Bealtaine Festival<\/strong>
\nEvery May, the Bealtaine Festival takes place. Bealtaine is Ireland’s national festival which “celebrates the arts and creativity as we age” and is run by Age & Opportunity. This is a oddly cumbersome description, but it expresses the difficult balance act between what the Bealtaine Festival essentially once was, a festival for old people, and what it wants to be, an inclusive festival for everyone who is older than around 50 without calling them old yet. A difficult balance act. And the saying “if you want to be something for everyone, you will be nothing for anybody” comes to mind. If you asked me, I would describe the Bealtaine Festival as a cultural festival for older people who otherwise don’t get much involved in events and culture and it has a REALLY important function in that role. It makes getting out and meeting others more accessible for many people. It is just a pity that it is limited to one month per year. There is a large number of events and you will find them all at https:\/\/bealtaine.ie\/events-2022\/<\/a> but this year the Bealtaine festival seems to be much smaller than in previous years. If you want to limit your search to events in Dublin City, you can use this link https:\/\/bealtaine.ie\/bealtaine-event\/?_sft_event_county=dublin-dublin-city<\/a> and find 52 events. Many of them are free events, so have a look! \nThe James Connolly Festival is a week-long series of events in “radical arts, culture and politics” in four different venues in Dublin 2.
