Happy New Year everybody! It was a second very “unique” start of a new year. Last year we were all so glad to leave 2020 behind and were full of hope for a much better 2021, but the year didn’t impress us in most aspects.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Regarding free events in Dublin, the year was close to a complete write off. And the many many online events from 2020, were replaced by …..close to nothing.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

+++ Freemasons’\u00a0Lodge Fire <\/strong>
\nThe Freemasons’\u00a0Lodge in Molesworth Street is one of Dublin’s most popular buildings at Culture Night and Open House. Since the Freemasons’\u00a0decided to make their building available for\u00a0public tours with detailed explanations a few years ago, it has been a huge\u00a0attraction, but on Friday night (31 Dec) news emerged that a fire broke out at the lodge. \nA new photo exhibition celebrating six decades of television in Ireland is now open at the National Photographic Archive in Temple Bar, marking RTE television turning 60 on New Year’s Eve 2021.

\nThe exhibition is a collaboration between RTE and the National Library of Ireland (NLI) and it explores entertainment, drama, sport, music, education and news and current affairs programming.

+++\u00a0The Moving Crib is still open\u00a0(Changed Opening Days)<\/strong>
\nFor the 65th year the moving crib is back at the St Martin Apostolate at Parnell Square. It is a whole basement floor of a crib installation and many other scenes from the bible and many of the figures and installation have moving parts. Definitely something for kids, but I enjoyed it as well when I visited the Moving Crib a few years ago. Opening hours are 11:00-18:00 every day of the week from 23 Nov-09 Jan. Originally the only closed days were\u00a0Christmas Day, St. Stephen’s Day and New Year’s Day, but an update on the website says that the Moving Crib will stay closed from 24 Dec – 02 Jan and if you had bookings for this period, you will have to re-book. +++\u00a0End of free admission to historic and public interest OPW sites<\/strong>
\nThe Office of Public Works (OPW) is looking after all historic sites and other sites that are owned by the state. Dublin Castle, Newgrange, Glendalough, Farmleigh House, Kilmainham Gaol, Rathfarnham Castle and also the National Botanic Gardens and many many other sites in and even more so outside of Dublin are all in state ownership and are managed by the OPW.
\nIn support of the Government’s recovery and reopening plan, from 14 May all OPW managed sites were free, but now on 01 January the sites that were not free before 14 May 2021 will return to charging admission charges again.
\nSo no more free daily tours in the National Botanic Gardens, or free visits of Dublin Castle and Kilmainham Gaol. \nThe National Gallery is usually free anyway, but in current times you will have to book tickets to get access and you have to enter the building on the Merrion Street side.
