Monday is the day when the next range of restrictions will be lifted and it is a significant change for everybody who loves culture!! On Monday, finally the museums and galleries and cultural venues will open again after 4.5 months closure. There are still restrictions regarding the number of people that can enter and that means you will have to pre-book in a lot of cases , but it is a big step in the right direction.\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Last week’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) was packed with online events and while we all are waiting for real\u00a0life events again, it still had some great things to do in it. BUT, Facebook decided that for unknown reasons it HATED the 705th edition of the Dublin Event Guide and consequently showed it to a measly total of just 173 people (!!!) instead of the usual 6000 people. I was NOT happy! After spending about 10 hours on gathering events, only a tiny tiny tiny amount of people saw it. That is like a kick in the teeth! :-(<\/span><\/p>\n

So something has to change! The change will be significant, but there is no way around it: I plan to gradually move away from posting the weekly newsletter on Facebook and would strongly recommend that you sign up to the e-mail version of the Dublin Event Guide. It is free, looks much better than the Facebook version and will make it directly into your Inbox the moment it is completed.<\/span>

Facebook also hasn’t fixed the Events section, so when events now are re-starting, then it will be even harder than ever before to find them on Facebook. :-O I found a trick to get around the FB obstacle regarding events. MAYBE that is another strong reason for subscribing on the website above! ;-)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The future is bright, so let’s look forward to it! It won’t be\u00a0virus-free, but that virus will become something we will be able to live with. And when the currently misguided people (like Ireland’s Chief Medical Officer)\u00a0start understanding that self-tests <\/u>will be an important part of our living with Covid we will be able to make an even bigger step forward.\u00a0 (The US CDC and the European CDC recommend self-tests, in Germany, the USA and the UK (among others) they are an essential part of the test strategy going forward, only in Ireland things are different. :-O ) And why are they important? Because they will allow us to re-open venues for gigs and concerts, talks and theatre much sooner than anything else. Self-tests are not perfect but in the right context they will be essential for cultural events. One day, even NPHET will get that!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The last section of this intro – before we get to the events – has to be about you and your help to keep the Dublin Event Guide going. I painfully had to realise again last week when FB struck, that the only reliable way to get the good word about all the free cultural events in Dublin is through e-mail and my own website.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are cost attached to that and I need your help with paying the bills. The last two weeks were EXTREMELY “dry” and since we are already entering the second week in May, I am getting a little concerned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

+++ Week of re-opening<\/strong><\/span>
\nOn Monday 10 May and Tuesday 11 May the museums in Dublin open their doors again. The great people from “EPIC – The Irish Emigration Museum” have put a handy list together here https:\/\/epicchq.com\/museums-and-visitor-attractions-reopening-this-may\/<\/a><\/span>
\nThere is not much I can add to that list, but I found a FEW more noteworthy bits: <\/span>
\n1) In their wisdom, the government seemingly has forbidden museums to operate Guided Tours, so at the moment all visits to museums will have to be self-guided tours. <\/span>
\n2) The National Print Museum in the Beggars Bush Barracks on Haddington Road in Dublin 4 is celebrating their 25th birthday and to celebrate this, admission is free for the whole of 2021. <\/span>
\n3) Entrance to the National Gallery is only via the building on Merrion Square. <\/span>
\n4) The Natural History museum on Merrion Street and the Science Gallery on Pearse Street will remain closed for now. The Natural History museum due to renovations and the Science Gallery, I guess because they currently have no exhibition inside, inside there is an exhibition that you can see from the outside.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

+++ Don’t be a NO-SHOW!<\/strong><\/span>
\nDuring the week I heard a rumour that last time Dublin Zoo was open for pre-booked visits from yearly members, they had up to 250 no-shows per day. 250 is a massive number and by not showing up, every one who decided they had something better to do took an opportunity away from someone else who would have liked to visit the zoo. There can be emergencies, but apart from these extreme situations, please don’t be a No-Show.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

+++ Bealtaine Festival <\/strong><\/span>
\nEvery year in May the Bealtaine Festival takes place. It is organised by Age Action Ireland, which already indicates who it is for: The Bealtaine Festival “celebrates the arts and creativity as we age”. Whatever that exactly means! I remember that Bealtaine was once for Seniors. But who wants to be called Seniors? So then the age range was pushed out a little and it was targeting people from Age 55. This year it is even going from 50-100. But that is a HUGE range and it will make it more and more difficult to target the people that really need something like Bealtaine, the ones that OTHERWISE will experience a sort of Covid Lockdown for the rest of their lives because they have no friends, hobbies and other interaction.<\/span>
\nI think the Bealtaine Festival is a great concept \u00a0and there are LOTS of free events, but maybe the target group should be tightened a bit more again? https:\/\/bealtaine.ie\/events_2021\/<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
