And also that it is close to impossible to predict when there will be “normal” events again.

It also showed everyone that getting into a complete lockdown was MUCH simpler than getting out of it. It was good to see that the government didn’t just implement what the NPHET recommended, because not even the experts are experts and – in a way – it is NPHET’s role to be on the extreme end of “caution”.

The situation we are in is completely new for everyone, even the “experts”. But it seems that in the process of modifying the public health advise to make it more implementable, the government truly made a mess of it. Contradicting and illogical rules and recommendations everywhere. They have to do much better, otherwise the public support for the protective measures will be gone very very soon!

Since we know that neither the government nor NPHET has ANY prior experience and they are all totally winging it, it would have been great to see some leadership. And leadership in an uncertain situation requires that steps are explained in detail, so that the followers know why these steps have been taken. Without that the the support will be lost rapidly! One of my “day jobs” is to provide Leadership Training at the Inspiring Leadership Academy (http://www.InspiringLeadershipAcademy.com) and it seems the people who run the country need some more training. ;-)

It seems that events that are organised by a business (Theatres, Cinemas, Museums, Art Galleries etc) can continue with events with up to 50 people indoors. All other (Which!?!?!?) indoor cultural venues, however, have to stick to the max number of 6 people. If that is not confusing, then what is? (https://www.thejournal.ie/how-many-people-can-attend-cultural-events-ireland-5180870-Aug2020/)
And while business-organised indoor events are allowed to have up to 50 people, ALL outdoor events are limited to 15 people. Unless it is a GAA match obviously, then 80 (40 people per team) are allowed, but NO audience, not even 15 – in a stadium for 80,000 people. The Dublin Event Guide is free as long as there is enough support from YOU, the readers. color: black; line-height: 20px;">

1) Covid Online Initiatives are dying out!!
When in the middle of March suddenly the unexpected lockdown happened, then lots of great people got thinking and working and created amazing online events where real-life events couldn’t happen anymore. It was a sort of resistance against the change that this virus forced upon our lives AND it was a way of maintain sanity for some artists and organisers.
—
But when two weeks became four and then six and then even more, then some organisers were seemingly wondering how they could make some money again and a few tried to convert initially free events in ticketed non-free events. Others kept going for free, but possibly also were wondering how to end the free regular events which more and more became like a burden.
—
A sort of normalisation happened and we got – in a way – used to the lockdown and then finally it seemed as if we could restart a sort of normal life again.
—
And between these two things something happened to all these wonderful online events: Bit by bit, they got scaled down and now there are significantly less online events happening than in the beginning of April. It is not a huge surprise, but because we are still far from any form of “normality”, it is a pity that that side of our newly discovered cultural pursuits is dying out.
—
Here in the Dublin Event Guide, I will continue to look for the needle in the haystack and will bring you as many cultural events every week as possible, but I just wanted to share with you my findings. The picture has changed a lot in the last few weeks.

2) Culture Night
Culture Night is one of my favourite yearly events. In previous years on Culture Night, which is this year on Friday 18 September, lots of cultural venues were open from 17:00-22:00 or 23:00 and the City Centre was buzzing with people and events. There were concert, talks, exhibitions and open doors and all was completely free.
For this year, there is good news and bad news!
—
The good news is that Culture Night will happen and there will be even a few real life events. But the bad news is that most real life events are already booked out due to the low numbers that will be admitted. There will be a good few online events, but as you maybe can imagine or have experienced in previous years, Culture Night always lived and thrived from the buzz, the bustling city, the busy events, even the long queues at some venues. And all this we will miss this year.
—
The events are all listed on https://culturenight.ie/ and because you MIGHT still find a real life event that is not booked out and to see what is happening online, I suggest you have a look already now!

3) Online Courses – Special Offer
During the Covid lockdown, enrollments in Udemy courses increased by 425%! Wow! What did you learn during that time? In August most Udemy courses will cost between EUR 10.99 and 12.99 again, so it is not too late yet to learn something new. Use this link https://shor.by/GqCk because if you buy through that link, you help the Dublin Event Guide! ;-)

4) Books
A free Book summary per week can be found here: https://readitfor.me/91927
And to buy books I recommend Book Depository because they are usually cheaper than others and they always include delivery for free (and by using this link you help the Dublin Event Guide). But Book Depository played a trick on me and I lost a whole month of affiliate rewards: They changed ALL their links, so if you used an old link, please don’t use it anymore and ONLY use this new link if you want to help the Dublin Event Guide with your purchase: https://shor.by/BookDepository

And this is it for another week!
