Restrictions continue, but life continues too! – Full list of great events plus National Heritage Week

The label “Hero”, in my mind, is reserved for people who save the world, the country, the city or – at a minimum – a person’s life while risking their own. The rest is just someone who does a good – sometimes even a great – job in their area of dedication. <\/span><\/p>\n

When I got an “Please do not bend!” envelope during the week, I was a bit surprised. And when I opened it and found in it a Certificate signed by the Mayor of Dublin, saying “Presented to Joerg Steegmueller, who is recognised as a Covid Hero for his work for his community during the pandemic 2020.” I was even more surprised. (And just in case you are wondering, Joerg Steegmueller is me. :-D )<\/span><\/p>\n

Now I quickly have to say that I am definitely no “hero”, but I also have to admit that it is nice to feel that the Dublin Event Guide is appreciated.<\/span><\/p>\n

So whoever nominated me, I thank you very much and am happy that I could help to make a bit of a difference during these challenging times! <\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike the “Freedom of the City”, the certificate I got does not come with the perk of allowing me to let my sheep graze in St. Stephen’s Green or any other perks, but it still motivates me to keep going week after week, especially as we now start realising more and more that the exceptional Covid circumstances will be MUCH longer with us than anyone had expected. <\/span><\/p>\n

Some outdoor events are carefully starting again, as you can see in the last section of this week’s Dublin Event Guide. Dublin City is running their Opera in the Open again this month and there is even a (commercial) summer festival happening in Westmeath, but the restrictions are quite severe and maybe only dampened good news. <\/span><\/p>\n

And here is the section again that needs you and that is possibly the least read. ;-) Before we get to the events, I will have to ask you for support again! I found a few more things to keep you going or that you might find interesting:<\/p>\n

1) National Heritage Week
\nFrom 15-23 August the 2020 version of the National Heritage Week will take place. While normally this is a “go to heritage sites” event, this time, there are a lot of online events and nearly all or onsite events require pre-booking. Have a look at the events list here https:\/\/www.heritageweek.ie\/projects<\/a> and if you are just looking for events in Dublin then this is filtered via this link https:\/\/gturl.eu\/NHeritageDublin<\/a>
\nSome events are listed in the events listing above, but there are 120 events in Dublin, so the Heritage Week website is the better place to find them ALL.<\/p>\n

2) Pubs are back open!? :-O For gigs and comedy!?
\nThe Workman’s Club are promoting events again and it seems a little sooner than expected. But Eventbrite registration is still possible, so it seems the event is going ahead? OR was it forgotten to cancel it? The Workman’s Club is showing on their website at https:\/\/theworkmansclub.com\/<\/a> that there will be a Comedy event on Saturday 15 Aug “Class Comedy: Return to the Workman\u2019s”. (Admission is not free, but with limited numbers allowed in, free events will become even scarcer.)
\nThe Purty Kitchen in Dun Laoghaire is promoting and selling tickets for an event with Made of Stone, a Stone Roses Tribute Band. https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/598347284288810\/<\/a> They do operate a restaurant as well, but if this gig will go ahead, they would be one of the VERY first live music venues that is back open again.
\nI found another gig announced somewhere, but when I checked the venue’s website, they clarified that this gig had been postponed to October. Interestingly, the website indicated that less than 90 people (Seated!) would be allowed into a venue that in the past accommodated more than 400 standing. You can imagine that that dramatic difference will drive ticket prices up significantly.<\/p>\n

3) Opera in the Open
\nDublin City is running a slimmed down Opera in the Open programme this year. There will be only two performances on the last two Thursdays in August and the numbers of attendees is severely restricted. Booking is required and there will be no access without a ticket.

\nThurs 27 Aug – 13:00: Turandot – Puccini

\nOpera in the Open always happens at the Amphitheatre behind the Dublin City Council building at Wood Quay.
\nYou will need to fill in a health questionnaire before you are allowed to attend, which is total nonsense, because nobody can trust the information that is provided that way.
\n—
\nOhh and astonishingly, someone added (in different font!) a note to the invitation that was sent out by e-mail that said “Persons living and or working in Kildare, Laois or Offaly should not attend.” Really? Sure there are restrictions in these three counties, but explicitly permission was given for people from these counties to go to work outside of their county, which means they are allowed to come to Dublin. But when they are here for work, we will not let them come to the Opera in the Open event? Is that the newest form of discrimination?<\/p>\n

4) Van Morrison Tribute
\nOn 31 August, Van Morrison celebrates his 75th birthday and in August and September, 75 artists will perform Van Morrison songs.

\nUnfortunately the article leaves out the schedule for the celebration. But I found some more details:

5) Online Courses – Special Offer<\/span>
\nDuring the Covid lockdown, enrollments in Udemy courses increased by 425%! Wow! What did you learn during that time?
