Hi all!<\/p>\n
Every week before I send the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) out to you, I check if and what a Spam Checker would complain about and it is amazing – at times even shocking – how difficult it can be to write a long mail that is NOT suspicious. Just normal words already set these filters off. I am not allowed for example to use a word that starts with gua continues with rant and ends with ee if I want to promise that you will enjoy an event and I am not allowed to talk about mill (combined with) ions of lights at the Mexican Day of Light, because in both cases filters would think that I am sending something bad (if I leave the space out). The word “free” must not be in capitals and must not be in the subject of the mail. This is not too difficult to stick to even in an Event Guide for free events, but I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point in the future the pure usage of the word will set alarm bells ringing. Often you can’t even imagine WHY the checker complains and it has happened a few times that I had to take the whole mail apart to isolate the section which is the apparently offending one. I am very glad that these filters exist, because otherwise we would constantly be flooded with mails about certain pharmaceutical products etc, but I wonder where it will all go. Because the writers of the offending mails are smart enough to try everything to avoid being caught and the filters play catch up all the time.<\/p>\n
Some of you regularly find this newsletter in the Junk\/Spam Folder in other cases Hotmail has blocked and deleted my weekly mail without even telling recipients about it. About 50 subscribers can’t receive this e-mail but instead I need to send them a separate PDF version because their company filters refuse to accept my mail.<\/p>\n
If you didn’t get the newsletter on a Friday morning by lunch time, please check your Spam or Junk Folder and you might find it in there. In that case, please tag it as “not Spam” and ideally add “dublineventguide@gmail.com” into your address list. This increases the chances of a reliable delivery hugely.<\/p>\n

On a completely different matter: My guess is that currently the average age in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) Community is somewhere around 30 years of age. This is a good average, but a friend (and regular reader and supporter) told me recently about her parents who are regular readers and supporters as well! (Hi to Orla and parents! :-) ) And she told me how active her parents are and that they enjoy their retirement and go to many events. This week I have a challenge\/task for all of you. There are many events in the Event Guide that are suitable for a wide range of ages, but the Event Guide is not reaching them. Can you help? Do you have family, colleagues, friends or are you involved in an organisation where people above the ages of 50 and 60 are actively involved? Could you help by letting them know about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)? It would be great to widen the spectrum in our Event Guide Community a bit!<\/p>\n

This week is very international! Irish Christmas Lighting Ceremonies, Bazaar of Nations, Caribbean Jamborees, African Moonlight Talks and all sorts of lectures, definitely a multicultural programme. I will be all weekend at a seminar about “Mental Toughness” where I am involved in the organisation. I might tell you a bit more about that in the future. ;-) Being in a seminar for 2 days means there won’t be any events for me this week.
\nIf I had time, though, I would go to the Car Boot Sale and to the Bazaar of Nations on Sunday and to some of the lectures during the week, there is interesting stuff going on. On Thursady I would love to see the screening of “My DDR T-Shirt” and with a bit of luck I might be able to go next week. ..if I work hard on the Event Guide before Thursday ;-) so that I don’t have all left to do on that night.<\/p>\n

MUSICAL YOUTH FOUNDATION – LAUNCH – TICKETS COMPETITION
\nOn Thursday 26 Nov “The Village” on Wexford Street is the venue for a launch party fundraiser by the “Musical Youth Foundation”. Doors are at 20:00 with the performances starting at 20:30. Entertainment will be provided by five of Ireland\u2019s most promising emerging artists: Fiach, Carosel, Iseult Sheehy, the River Valley Mountain Band and Mob Fandango.
\nThe organiser behind all this is Chris Maher who invented and founded the brilliant Dublin City Soul Festival. The \u2018Musical Youth Foundation\u2019 was established by the Dublin City Soul Festival to make a difference in the Dublin Community and the long term goal is to establish a Music Academy in Dublin City, where children under 18 can go to practise their instruments, establish bands and benefit from mentoring from industry experts including high profile artists in a safe and secure environment.
\nTickets for this very promising event are only EUR 5 (plus booking fees if you book online on www.wavtickets.com or www.tickets.ie). All proceeds will go directly to the Musical Youth Foundation and the funds will be used to establish a music education programme for underprivileged children in a Dublin Community. \nTania P a friend and long-term subscriber of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) asked me during the week if it wouldn’t be possible to search for GOOD news about Dublin instead of focusing on closures and economic challenges to pubs, cafes etc. I think this is a great idea. The only problem is that newspapers don’t write about good news, so finding them is a lot trickier than finding the not so good news.

BUDGET POSTURING
\nThe 09 Dec 2009 is Budget Day this year. The day on which we will find out how much more money we will have to pay through raised taxes to get the country again half-way on the road to affluency. You will hear and read LOTS about that day in the coming weeks and you will hear SUDDENLY from organisations that you have never heard about or that have been quiet for a long time and they will ALL demand that the government will NOT touch their money. Without a doubt the Pubs will demand that no alcohol taxes will be increased and all groups that are active in the social sector. In some cases they have a strong argument, but if you accept that there will be further cuts and increased taxes or charges, then you will probably accept (or hope) that all sectors are affected a bit instead of one (or a few) having to carry the burden. The National Campaign for the Arts wants your signatures (http:\/\/www.petitiononline.com\/ncfa\/petition.html) to support their demands to maintain the current status (no cuts, keep unnecessary organisations and a department that is definitely not the most essential). To me that approach is unrealistic. Why not negotiate, i.e. be prepared to give up something in return for keeping other things?<\/p>\n

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. If you are one of the courageous people who has recently taken the risk and has started a company and if you could do with spreading the word, I am happy to help you! MOMENTS IN TIME – BERLIN WALL – PHOTO EXHIBITION
\nFrom 05-19 Nov 2009, the European Commission Representation in Ireland will host an exhibition about the events surrounding the Fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989. The exhibition is entitled “Moments in Time 1989\/90” and can be visited for free at European Union House, 18 Dawson Street, Dublin 2, from 09:00-17:00 from Monday to Friday.
\nBased on snapshots, and footage from television and film, the exhibition \u201cMoments in Time 1989\/1990\u201d presents the wealth of images generated by the turn of events between May 1989 and December 1990. CAFE CULTURE PROJECT – CONFERENCE

Now the teams that nearly made it are in play-offs competing against each other. There will be two games and the first is on 14 Nov. (The second is on 18 Nov.) Ireland wasn’t blessed with luck when the draw decided that the opponent will be France. So, whoever comes out from these two games as the overall winner, will go to South Africa and the other team will stay at home. An all or nothing decision that obviously is very exciting for people that are interested.

\nMUCH too early again, but nobody is listening to me anyway. ;-)
\nOn Sunday 15 Nov the Christmas Lights will be switched on in Henry Street. It is the first lighting ceremony this year and the Dublin City Business Improvement District (BID) claims that they have invested EUR 400,000 to turn the usually much cheaper looking Henry Street area (in comparison to Grafton Street) into a “shimmering, shining wonderland”. The official switching on will take place at 16:00 and will be done by RTE presenter Miriam O\u2019Callaghan.
\nA magical family fun day has been organised for the Henry Street switching on ceremony with the festivities planned to start at 11:00. Join story teller Susie Minto in the Jervis Shopping Centre, while Conor Lambert\u2019s Custard Pie Puppet Company will entertain with live interactive puppet shows in the Ilac Shopping Centre; both part of the BIDs for KIDs Winter Programme. At 13:00 Santa will arrive by horse drawn carriage and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the larger than life Christmas characters who will be roaming the streets. CHRISTMAS BAZAAR – FUNDRAISER OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS
\nThis years International Annual Fundraiser of the Diplomatic Corps in Dublin is taking place on Sun 15 Nov. The “Bazaar of the Nations\u201d is the well known name for a tradition in Dublin: spouses of ambassadors and their Irish friends invite everybody to taste their traditional food, look for local and exotic fine crafts, and even buy art. All items are donated for this purpose and prepared exclusively by volunteers. This year\u2019s recipients are women and children in Ireland and abroad. The Bazaar aims to raise Irish awareness for neighbourhood problems, victims of torture in Ireland from all over the world, and relief for female victims of warfare in Bethlehem and Northern Pakistan & Irish Friends. There is Food, Specialties, Art, Gifts, Christmas Items, Crafts from all over the world.
\nI was last year at this event and it was certainly a colourful and busy event with lots of good food in all variations. Slightly chaotic, but, hey, that’s the nature of a Bazaar isn’t it? However, the event is not completely free, BUT it is so inexpensive that I will include it anyway. Admission is just EUR 2, so I hope it won’t break the bank. IRISH MUSEUM AMALGAMATION – PUBLIC FORUM
\nA public forum on the amalgamation of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Ireland and the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork, announced by the Government in 2008, will be held at the Irish Museum of Modern Art on Wednesday 18 November (09:30-16:00). The event is being organised by IMMA both as a means of exploring further the possible impact of the decision on the Museum and in response to the many queries which the IMMA has received on the subject from visitors, artists, collect ors and other stakeholder. THE BERLIN WALL 1961-1989 – FILM SERIES – DCU
\nFrom 07 Oct -16 Dec, the German Department of the (SALIS) at Dublin City University (DCU) presents a film series about the “Berlin Wall 1961-1989” in co-operation with the Goethe-Institut Irland. ERNEST HEMINGWAY – RDS SPEAKER SERIES
\n“The Ernest Hemingway I Knew” by Valerie Hemingway is the next event in the RDS Speaker Series. Valerie Hemingway is a writer, editor and speaker currently living in Montana, USA but originally from Dublin. Valerie first encountered and interviewed Ernest Hemingway in Spain in 1959, the interview was awkward and brief, but before it ended something had clicked into place. For the next two years, she devoted her life to Hemingway and his wife, Mary, travelling with them through beloved old haunts in Spain and France and living with them during the tumultuous final months in Cuba.
\nAfter Hemingway\u2019s death, she catalogued the Hemingway papers for presentation to the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston and later married Hemingway\u2019s son, Dr. Gregory Hemingway. In her talk she will reflect on her intriguing personal and global journey. Admission to this lecture is free, but registration is required. MY DDR T-SHIRT – DOCUMENTARY FILM – UCD
\n“My DDR T-Shirt” is a documentary film by Ian Hawkins. It was inspired by a trip to Berlin in 2005. When Ian bought a souvenir t-shirt with the old East German communist symbol on it, he decided he needed to learn about life in East Germany (the DDR, the Deutsche Demokratische Republik) before he could wear it. And so he returned to Berlin with his camcorder and set about gathering stories from both the East and West. These stories and the people that tell them help Ian on his quest to understand what life was like in East Germany. AER LINGUS ADVERTISEMENT – NATIONAL PRINT MUSEUM LECTURE
\n“\u2018It\u2019s easy by air!\u2019: Nationalism, Internationalism and the Aer Lingus Travel Poster” by Dr. Linda King is the next lecture in the National Print Museum. It will take place on Thurs 19 Nov from 19:30 and admission is free.
\nThe establishment of Aer Lingus in 1936 was a huge infrastructural and political achievement for a newly independent country. By 1951 the Irish national airline had embarked on anambitious advertising strategy led by Dublin-based Sun Advertising. Over the next decade, Sun employed a number of Dutch designers to work on this account many of which were directly recruited through KLM, the Dutch flag-carrier and pioneer of aviation identity systems. IMMA GALLERY TALK
\nThe exhibition “Between Metaphor and Object” features a range of sculptures and installation works from the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) Collection. Central to this exhibition are key works from the Weltkunst Foundation whose significant collection epitomizes \u2018New British Sculpture\u2019 of 1980s and \u201890s. In this talk, Medb Ruane, writer and critic, explores philosophical themes such as abstraction, object hood and subjectivity, as a context in which to discuss a disparate range of works by young sculptors who showed a renewed interest in combining traditional materials to create metaphorical meaning. DR KORCZAK’S EXAMPLE – PLAY READING
\nDr Korczak’s Example is a play reading in the Project Arts Centre to mark 20 years since the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, followed by a discussion with the Children’s Rights Alliance, chaired by young people. 93 PAGES ON HOW TO CYCLE – FOR THE BRITISH POLICE
\nYes, this is definitely odd! The British police chiefs have reportedly produced a 93-page guide telling officers how to ride a bicycle. The book comes in two volumes and allegedly gives officers advice on how to balance so they do not fall off, how to brake and how to avoid obstacles such as kerbs and rocks. Are these the same police that brought us the liquid ban on planes? And the same that got ME to do an alco test while sitting in a PARKED car after another person drove into my parked car?
