After more than 11 years and 600 continuous weeks of creating Dublin Event Guides, this is it – at least in the current form. This is the last edition of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and ironically with this last edition I had soooo many technical problems that the sending was delayed by more than 2 hours. :-O
Thanks for being with me on this path for the last few years! Thanks for your support! Now that things are winding down and the Dublin Event Guide is going into retirement, I won’t ask you for any further support, but I want to thank each and everyone who helped over the last 600 weeks from the bottom of my heart. Without your help, the Dublin Event Guide could not have continued that long, So thank you very very much.<\/a><\/p>\n

To cover the cost of the Dublin Event Guide EUR 240 per month was needed and I just asked for EUR 12 from generous donors. But is this a triumphant return to the North-side of the Liffey to one of the best venues in town? You\u2019ll have to wait and see.

Yes, that’s it now! After 11.5 years together and 600 editions, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is – at least in the current form – reaching you the last time. The long e-mail in its current form will be gone, but every now and then I will still send a mail to all 24,000 subscribers when I come across some good events or worthwhile news. You might know that I am a bit of a Christmas Market purist and am extremely disappointed with what Dublin manages to put together. With that in mind, I would say that most (if not all) of the “Christmas Markets” on that list are actually “Markets at Christmas”, but not real Christmas Markets. But decide for yourself!<\/a><\/p>\n

And if you wonder which markets I would recommend: I have heard good things about Winterval in Waterford but was never there myself. So the only market that I would definitely recommend is the one in Belfast! :-O<\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Lustre showcases beautiful pieces designed and made by the most recent graduates of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland\u2019s Centre of Excellence in Jewellery & Goldsmithing, work in gold, silver, platinum and gemstones. A highlight of the exhibition is an exquisite collection of ten Faberg\u00e9-style eggs.<\/a><\/p>\n

InFlux shows the results of two years of training in all aspects of ceramics skills and design at DCCoI\u2019s Centre of Excellence in Ceramics which is based in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. \u2018Flux\u2019 in ceramics describes a material that will cause silica, which has a natural melting point of 1700\u00b0C, to melt at a lower temperature thus forming ceramic glazes. In general terms, the word \u2018flux\u2019 also means continuous change and movement and can be applied to the development of ideas and designs and best describes the diversity of this work.<\/a><\/p>\n

It started as a modest brick house for the Phoenix Park Chief Ranger in 1751, was then turned into th \u2018occasional residence\u2019 for the Lords-Lieutenant and gradually evolved into a huge mansion. After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every Saturday a number of public tours take place and admission is free. Tickets will be issued at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day, on a first come, first served basis. Group and\/or advance booking is not possible.<\/a><\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Inti macy” and it will run from 19 October until 24 February. (You probably see that there is a space in the middle of the exhibition title. That is to trick any spam filter that doesn’t like too private or personal words. In the following text I will use “Personal Connection” as a replacement title.)<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/a><\/p>\n

+ Companion Cat and Robot Flatmate
+ Hello Machine, a phone system for spontaneous conversations with strangers
+ Measure your Personal Space
+ A virtual reality system that allows visitors to experience the world through the eyes and body of another person.<\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dublin Flea Christmas Market is back and this year it will run over two weekends and again from Thursday until Sunday. It will happen again at the Point Village, in the same building where the cinema is. Admission is free and the opening hours are Thurs + Fri 12:30-18:30. The two market weekends are 06-09 December and 13-16 December.<\/a><\/p>\n

At each weekend there will be approx. 140 stalls at the market, but the second weekend will have DIFFERENT stalls than the first, so don’t just go on once weekend and think you are done. You have to come the second weekend as well. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the biggest Christmas Market in Dublin this year. It is an indoor market in a modern building, so not really comparable to the Christmas Markets I keep raving about (and which we don’t have in Ireland), but at least it is a “big market at Christmas”.<\/a><\/p>\n

Parking is a problem in the area. There is a multistorey car park, but it is pricey and limited in space. So if possible come by LUAS.<\/a><\/div>\n

Floats in the Aether is an ambitious, large-scale performance comprising a series of events involving over 100 women and girls of different backgrounds and social contexts. The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.<\/a><\/p>\n

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.<\/a><\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Inti macy” and it will run from 19 October until 24 February. (You probably see that there is a space in the middle of the exhibition title. That is to trick any spam filter that doesn’t like too private or personal words. In the following text I will use “Personal Connection” as a replacement title.)<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?<\/a><\/p>\n

+ Hello Machine, a phone system for spontaneous conversations with strangers
+ Measure your Personal Space

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dublin Flea Christmas Market is back and this year it will run over two weekends and again from Thursday until Sunday. It will happen again at the Point Village, in the same building where the cinema is. Admission is free and the opening hours are Thurs + Fri 12:30-18:30. The two market weekends are 06-09 December and 13-16 December.<\/a><\/p>\n

At each weekend there will be approx. 140 stalls at the market, but the second weekend will have DIFFERENT stalls than the first, so don’t just go on once weekend and think you are done. You have to come the second weekend as well. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the biggest Christmas Market in Dublin this year. It is an indoor market in a modern building, so not really comparable to the Christmas Markets I keep raving about (and which we don’t have in Ireland), but at least it is a “big market at Christmas”.<\/a><\/p>\n

Parking is a problem in the area. There is a multistorey car park, but it is pricey and limited in space. So if possible come by LUAS.<\/a><\/div>\n

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.<\/a><\/p>\n

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.<\/a><\/p>\n

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.<\/a><\/p>\n

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.<\/a><\/p>\n

The market area is not huge, it goes along the “Metals”, which is from the Dun Laoghaire’s MarineRoad near the City Hall (40 Foot Pub) towards the LexiCon library along the Queen’s Road, along the harbour.<\/a><\/p>\n

There will be a number of stalls with art and craft and seasonal food. A Vintage Funfair with Ferris Wheel will run in parallel with the Christmas Market.<\/a><\/p>\n

The City of Dublin Winter Solstice Celebration Festival 2018 is taking place on Friday and consists of an indoors part on the DIT Grangegorman Campus, followed by a parade to Smithfield Plaza.<\/a><\/p>\n

Smashing Times and Sl\u00ed an Chro\u00ed, in partnership with Dublin Institute of Technology are inviting to this 9th City of Dublin Winter Solstice Celebration Festival.<\/a><\/p>\n

The indoor festival is from 16:00-17:30 and the outdoor festival and parade from 17:30-19:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

At the Indoor Festival in Rathdown House on the DIT Grangegorman Campus there will be a big C\u00e9il\u00ed (Irish dancing with the Brian Boru C\u00e9il\u00ed band); a Solstice Storytelling performance with poetry, song and stories; face painting; a magic card show and craft making to work on masks, banners and wreaths for the parade. Creative stalls like the holly brooch and ivy wreath stand, the withy stand, the hat and rattle making stand and the face-painting corner for a Winter Solstice design will also be available.<\/a><\/p>\n

Outdoor Festival and Parade: 5.30pm, An Cro\u00ed, DIT Grangegorman Campus to Smithfield Square<\/a><\/p>\n

At 17:30 the parade assembles at An Chroi, the main entrance to DIT Grangegorman Campus to march to Smithfield Plaza. It will be a colourful, choreographed movement performance to announce the arrival of the Sun Goddess, the Snow Queen and Ice princesses followed by the lighting of the fire bowl and the beginning of the parade.<\/a><\/p>\n

The route is: DIT Grangegorman – Grangegorman Road Lower – North Brunswick St – Red Cow Lane – Smithfield Plaza. Everybody is invited to be part od the parade. Dress in bright, festive colours of red and yellow, bring a lantern, a rattle, a drum, a tambourine, anything that shines.<\/a><\/p>\n

A Winter Solstice Fire Ceremony on Smithfield Plaza will conclude the event with a high point.<\/a><\/p>\n
