I can’t believe that this is the second last Dublin Event Guide! :-O After 11.5 years the Dublin Event Guide has so much become part of my life that will feel very odd not to run this project anymore. But, as I said before, I won’t go away completely and so I am preparing for retirement when I can’t expect any financial support from you wonderful people anymore. For that reason I have changed E-Mail service providers from this week. I hope it won’t come with tooo many hiccups. But is this a triumphant return to the North-side of the Liffey to one of the best venues in town? You\u2019ll have to wait and see.

I will leave that message here, because it seems that not everyone has seen it yet. :-O<\/a><\/p>\n

I hope you saw the mail that I sent to you last week, in which I announced that after 11.5 years and 600 editions, I will retire the Dublin Event Guide on 14 December. It hasn’t been an easy decision, but it is the right decision. I have spent many many hours and literally sleepless nights on it and it was a great experience and a great time. But now it is time to focus on other things.<\/a><\/p>\n

I will not terminate the Dublin Event Guide, only retire it. The popular Christmas radio station that broadcasts from the Ballsbridge Hotel throughout the whole pre-Christmas time is back for the 11th year. It started on 28 November and will be broadcasting until 27 December.<\/a><\/p>\n

Christmas FM has raised almost EUR 1.5million for a range of charities over these 11 years and this year they will be raising awareness and funds for Temple Street Children\u2019s Hospital. The radio station\u2019s goal is to raise over EUR 200,000.<\/a><\/p>\n

A highlight of the exhibition is an exquisite collection of ten Faberg\u00e9-style eggs.<\/a><\/p>\n

InFlux shows the results of two years of training in all aspects of ceramics skills and design at DCCoI\u2019s Centre of Excellence in Ceramics which is based in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. \u2018Flux\u2019 in ceramics describes a material that will cause silica, which has a natural melting point of 1700\u00b0C, to melt at a lower temperature thus forming ceramic glazes. In general terms, the word \u2018flux\u2019 also means continuous change and movement and can be applied to the development of ideas and designs and best describes the diversity of this work.<\/a><\/p>\n

After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dublin Flea Christmas Market is back and this year it will run over two weekends and again from Thursday until Sunday. It will happen again at the Point Village, in the same building where the cinema is. Admission is free and the opening hours are Thurs + Fri 13:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 11:00-18:00. The two market weekends are 06-09 December and 13-16 December.<\/a><\/p>\n

At each weekend there will be approx. 140 stalls at the market, but the second weekend will have DIFFERENT stalls than the first, so don’t just go on once weekend and think you are done. You have to come the second weekend as well. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the biggest Christmas Market in Dublin this year. It is an indoor market in a modern building, so not really comparable to the Christmas Markets I keep raving about (and which we don’t have in Ireland), but at least it is a “big market at Christmas”.<\/a><\/p>\n

Parking is a problem in the area. There is a multistorey car park, but it is pricey and limited in space. So if possible come by LUAS.<\/a><\/div>\n

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.<\/a><\/p>\n

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.<\/a><\/p>\n

The National Foodball Exhibition has been launched in Dublin and will be on show from 02-09 December and will then travel to seven other venues around Ireland until 2020 and will finally be in Dublin again in June 2020.<\/a><\/p>\n

“The Exhibition is made up of six zones, with each zone designed to give you an overview of the various different aspects of football in Ireland, the impact this has around the country, some of your favourite and most memorable National and International moments and a look at some of the most iconic moments over the last 60 years of the EUROs. The zones will be made up of memorabilia displays and interactive stations with videos, quizzes and an opportunity to step up to the mic and record your own commentary.”<\/a><\/p>\n

There is also an app for Android and iOS that will serve as an audio guide when you are at the exhibition.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?<\/a><\/p>\n

+ Hello Machine, a phone system for spontaneous conversations with strangers

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dublin Flea Christmas Market is back and this year it will run over two weekends and again from Thursday until Sunday. It will happen again at the Point Village, in the same building where the cinema is. Admission is free and the opening hours are Thurs + Fri 13:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 11:00-18:00. The two market weekends are 06-09 December and 13-16 December.<\/a><\/p>\n

At each weekend there will be approx. 140 stalls at the market, but the second weekend will have DIFFERENT stalls than the first, so don’t just go on once weekend and think you are done. You have to come the second weekend as well. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the biggest Christmas Market in Dublin this year. It is an indoor market in a modern building, so not really comparable to the Christmas Markets I keep raving about (and which we don’t have in Ireland), but at least it is a “big market at Christmas”.<\/a><\/p>\n

Parking is a problem in the area. There is a multistorey car park, but it is pricey and limited in space. So if possible come by LUAS.<\/a><\/div>\n

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.<\/a><\/p>\n

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.<\/a><\/p>\n

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.<\/a><\/p>\n

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Dublin Flea Christmas Market is back and this year it will run over two weekends and again from Thursday until Sunday. It will happen again at the Point Village, in the same building where the cinema is. Admission is free and the opening hours are Thurs + Fri 13:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 11:00-18:00. The two market weekends are 06-09 December and 13-16 December.<\/a><\/p>\n

At each weekend there will be approx. 140 stalls at the market, but the second weekend will have DIFFERENT stalls than the first, so don’t just go on once weekend and think you are done. You have to come the second weekend as well. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the biggest Christmas Market in Dublin this year. It is an indoor market in a modern building, so not really comparable to the Christmas Markets I keep raving about (and which we don’t have in Ireland), but at least it is a “big market at Christmas”.<\/a><\/p>\n

Parking is a problem in the area. There is a multistorey car park, but it is pricey and limited in space. So if possible come by LUAS.<\/a><\/div>\n

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.<\/a><\/p>\n

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the biggest Christmas Market in Dublin this year. It is an indoor market in a modern building, so not really comparable to the Christmas Markets I keep raving about (and which we don’t have in Ireland), but at least it is a “big market at Christmas”.<\/a><\/p>\n

Parking is a problem in the area. There is a multistorey car park, but it is pricey and limited in space. So if possible come by LUAS.<\/a><\/div>\n

Less customers in Grafton Street due to LUAS<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is interesting! I had never thought of this or considered it, but after reading an article in the Irish Times<\/a> about footfall in Grafton Street, I can see how it might make sense. Dublintown, the trader organisation for the City Centre, have identified that there was a drop in footfall by approx. 5.2% and they think the LUAS is the reason.<\/p>\n

At first I thought: NONSENSE! The reduction in customer numbers if probably a general and global trend away from retail shops and towards online shopping. The prices retail shops charge are often to hideously high in comparison to online retailers that it really is difficult to keep shopping in the bricks & mortar shops.<\/a><\/p>\n

But then I thought about how I would use the LUAS (if I could from where I live). If you come from the southern part of Dublin on the Green LUAS line and you work on the North side of the Liffey, then before the Cross City Luas was there, you would have left the LUAS at St. Stephen’s Green and then you would have had to walk from St. Stephen’s Green through Grafton Street to cross the Liffey to get to the Northside. Now, since the Cross City Luas is there, you change Luas trains at St. Stephen’s Green and then go across to the Northside in Luas, without ever putting a foot into Grafton Street.<\/a><\/p>\n

Not much that can be done about it, but interesting how this new LUAS connection hurts businesses directly but very unintentionally. :-O<\/a><\/div>\n
