I didn’t reply to all mails from last week yet, so if you didn’t hear from me, don’t worry, you will! Another busy week in Dublin. The first Christmas Market is launching. Not in Dublin, but in Dun Laoghaire and with edition 597, this means there will only be three more to come. :-O By the way I already saw that I can’t just leave you in the lurch so I am trying to find a way to still send the occasional e-mail without the VERY high cost I have to pay currently. I might have to scale down from 24,000 to the REALLY interested people!<\/a><\/p>\n

I will leave that message here, because it seems that not everyone has seen it yet. :-O<\/a><\/p>\n

I hope you saw the mail that I sent to you last week, in which I announced that after 11.5 years and 600 editions, I will retire the Dublin Event Guide on 14 December. It hasn’t been an easy decision, but it is the right decision. I have spent many many hours and literally sleepless nights on it and it was a great experience and a great time. But now it is time to focus on other things.<\/a><\/p>\n

I will not terminate the Dublin Event Guide, only retire it. That means that you will still hear from me and I will still tell you about events, but not through a weekly e-mail or daily Facebook messages anymore, instead it will be less scheduled and only when big(is) events are coming up. But I won’t go away and I hope you will stick around as well. ;-)<\/a><\/p>\n

Christmas Market in Dublin? – Dublin disappoints again!<\/h2>\n
\n

I like living in Dublin and enjoy lots of great events here throughout the year, but the Christmas period always comes with lots of frustration and annoyance about the appalling inability of Dublin City to create and maintain an attraction that tourists expect and locals enjoy in the run up to Christmas. I will never get tired pointing out how useless Dublin’s Councillors and City Management are in this respect and I still haven’t given up that ONE day, we will get a successful traditional Christmas Market.<\/a><\/p>\n

This week I was reminded again how Dublin fares in comparison to other cities:
Waterford calls itself Ireland’s Christmas Capital and advertises their Winterval Christmas Market (17 Nov – 23 Dec) on the back of Dublin’s Buses. Waterford has a measly 82,000 inhabitants and manages to run a Christmas Market for years.
Belfast’s Christmas Market also was launched on Saturday (17 Nov) and is attracting people to visit Belfast. Belfast has about 300,000 inhabitants.<\/p>\n

With 1.5 million people, Dublin is 5 times the size of Belfast and it is 18 times the size of Waterford. But Dublin can NOT manage to have a Christmas Market. How poor is that!<\/a><\/p>\n

Year after year I get e-mails before Christmas from people asking when a) the Christmas Lights will be switched on and b) when the Dublin Christmas Market will happen. These are mails from people that would like to visit Dublin before Christmas not from people who live here! So Christmas Markets are not just a nice Christmas feature, but are a minimum requirement for tourism!<\/a><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Elvis Tribute Gig – Help me, help Eabha!<\/h2>\n
\n

Did you know that I sing in an Elvis Tribute Band? :-O Don’t worry, though, I am NOT the front man! :-) The Elvis Tribute Performer is the outstanding Kevin Doyle who truly sounds like Elvis. If you don’t believe me, come to our gig on 03 December and if you didn’t enjoy the gig, I will buy you a pint afterwards!<\/a><\/p>\n

I sing in Kevin’s backing choir and LOVE our performances. The gig on 03 December is a very special gig for two reasons. Firstly it will be a fundraiser for little Eabha, the daughter of another choir member and for the Jack & Jill Foundation. Eabha was diagnosed with Alcardi Syndrome when she was one week old, which is a rare malformation syndrome of the brain. The Jack & Jill Foundation helps families with children who suffer from severe intellectual and physical disabilities.<\/a><\/p>\n

And the second reason for this being a very special gig is because it is happening on the 50th Anniversary of Elvis’ 68 Comeback Special. A very very unique concert with a tiny audience that sat on the stage and directly around it. We will do a re-run of that special gig and add some more parts to it. More than 30 songs!! It will be en epic experience that will never be repeated.<\/a><\/p>\n

The gig is not free, because we are trying to get money for Eabha and the Jack & Jill Foundation, but it is worth every cent!
The National Stadium can take 2000 people and, boy would it be cool if we could fill that place!!! I did do concerts in front of more than 1000, but 2000 would be a new record. :-)<\/p>\n

A highlight of the exhibition is an exquisite collection of ten Faberg\u00e9-style eggs.<\/a><\/p>\n

InFlux shows the results of two years of training in all aspects of ceramics skills and design at DCCoI\u2019s Centre of Excellence in Ceramics which is based in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. \u2018Flux\u2019 in ceramics describes a material that will cause silica, which has a natural melting point of 1700\u00b0C, to melt at a lower temperature thus forming ceramic glazes. In general terms, the word \u2018flux\u2019 also means continuous change and movement and can be applied to the development of ideas and designs and best describes the diversity of this work.<\/a><\/p>\n

The period between the Restoration of Charles II in 1660 and his death in 1685 was Dublin\u2019s first economic boom. The growing population put pressure on the existing medieval city, and Dublin began to expand beyond the city walls, with new suburbs created to the east and the north.<\/a><\/p>\n

It started as a modest brick house for the Phoenix Park Chief Ranger in 1751, was then turned into th \u2018occasional residence\u2019 for the Lords-Lieutenant and gradually evolved into a huge mansion. After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every Saturday a number of public tours take place and admission is free. Tickets will be issued at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day, on a first come, first served basis. Group and\/or advance booking is not possible.<\/a><\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Inti macy” and it will run from 19 October until 24 February. (You probably see that there is a space in the middle of the exhibition title. That is to trick any spam filter that doesn’t like too private or personal words. In the following text I will use “Personal Connection” as a replacement title.)<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/a><\/p>\n

+ Companion Cat and Robot Flatmate
+ Hello Machine, a phone system for spontaneous conversations with strangers
+ Measure your Personal Space
+ A virtual reality system that allows visitors to experience the world through the eyes and body of another person.<\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Inti macy” and it will run from 19 October until 24 February. (You probably see that there is a space in the middle of the exhibition title. That is to trick any spam filter that doesn’t like too private or personal words. In the following text I will use “Personal Connection” as a replacement title.)<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:<\/a><\/p>\n

+ Companion Cat and Robot Flatmate
+ Hello Machine, a phone system for spontaneous conversations with strangers
+ Measure your Personal Space
+ A virtual reality system that allows visitors to experience the world through the eyes and body of another person.<\/p>\n

The website below lists all exhibits and provides some explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.<\/a><\/p>\n

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.<\/a><\/p>\n

Ronan Newman will look at why our short Summer never gets past astronomical twilight and will delve deep into the Irish Newspaper and Met Eireann archives. He will also address if the 1883 Krakatoa eruption amongst other eruptions that may have caused the rise of NLC’s. He will examine why we know so little about our current Deep Solar Minimum and how the Solar Cycle effects NLC formation. This lecture will present new research on an early Irish crosier that was discovered in a bog near Prosperous, Co. Kildare, in the 19th century. The crosier is one of the treasures of early medieval Ireland, the Golden Age of Irish art. Recent research on its dating, art, techniques and a fragmentary inscription will be revealed, which, surprisingly, connect this Christian ceremonial object with Dublin.<\/p>\n

From post-colonialism to environmental activism, via art history and zoology, this interdisciplinary study day will present research in progress from postgraduate students. <\/a><\/p>\n

Around 380 years ago, the artist Frans Post (1612-1680) left the Netherlands for Brazil. At this time, an area of north-eastern Brazil was a Dutch colony, and Post was an official expedition artist tasked with documenting the landscape. He spent seven years (1637-1644) recording the local environment, producing meticulous drawings and detailed oil paintings. The exhibition “Curious Creatures: Frans Post and Brazil” is an opportunity to see thirty-four recently discovered artworks from the Noord-Hollands Archief in Haarlem, alongside various South American animal specimens on loan from the National Museum of Ireland, Natural History.<\/a><\/p>\n

The purpose of this postgraduate study day is to bring together artists, scientists, historians and activists to respond to Post\u2019s artwork and also consider the exhibition as part of a wider conversation.<\/a><\/p>\n

Visiting the People\u2019s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of great art works from the artists themselves. People\u2019s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art\/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen\u2019s Green. Definitely recommended!<\/a><\/div>\n

Total ban of “single-use” bags? Don’t overdo it!

We (hopefully) all know about the environmental problems plastic causes. We see regularly pictures and read reports about animals that were interfered with by getting caught in or swallowing items made of plastic. The plan is to forbid forks and knives, straws and plates and cups made of plastic and while there is a lot of sense in some of this, there is the possibility to go overboard a bit in an over-exaggerated “we have to do something” drive.<\/a><\/p>\n

Ireland was one of the earlier countries to charge for the use of plastic bags and in the meantime MANY countries caught up or even did better by forbidding certain type of plastic bags. But at a visit in Germany a few months ago, I came across a situation that showed me that we really can overdo it!<\/a><\/p>\n

I was in a middle sized town and had a look at some shops without any clear intent to buy something. C&A, a big clothes shop, was also there and I went inside to have a look. They are known for good quality for low prices. Not as low as Penney’s, but still very competitive. And while having a look around, I found a T-Shirt that I really liked and one or two other items that looked great and were at the right price.<\/a><\/p>\n

So I went to the till and pushed the clothes across the counter to pay. The employee behind the counter scanned the labels of the three items and pushed them back to me. :-O I looked at her in a quizzical way and she said “Oh, do you need a bag?” I said “Do you have a paper bag?” Her reply: “No, we don’t do paper bags, but you can buy a plastic bag.” :-O :-O<\/a><\/p>\n

I had no interest in using a plastic bag, but I also didn’t want to walk out of the shop with three pieces of clothing clenched under my arm just because I hadn’t pre-planned the purchase and therefore didn’t bring my own bag!!<\/a><\/p>\n

Is it too much to ask to get at least the flimsiest of paper bags to put your purchases in if you go clothes shopping? C&A also sells suits and evening dresses. Would you not think that it is in the interest of the shop to provide customers with basic means to bring their garments home unblemished?<\/a><\/p>\n

I am all in favour of protecting the environment, but that experience did annoy me quite a bit. I could have bought a plastic bag, but I decided not to (for environmental reasons), so I DID walk out of the shop with three items of clothing clenched under my arm. :-O<\/a><\/p>\n
