I will reply to every single one of them, but it will take a few more days! This is edition No 596 and as I had promised, there will be Dublin Event Guides until we reach 600. I expected that as soon as I tell you about the Dublin Event Retirement ALL donations will stop immediately, but that was not the case, instead MORE people than before were prepared to help to find the money so that I won’t have to end it with any debt. I hope you saw the mail that I sent to you during the week in which I announced that after 11.5 years and 600 editions, I will retire the Dublin Event Guide on 14 December. It hasn’t been an easy decision, but it is the right decision. I have spent many many hours and literally sleepless nights on it and it was a great experience and a great time. But now it is time to focus on other things.<\/a><\/p>\n

I will not terminate the Dublin Event Guide, only retire it. That means that you will still hear from me and I will still tell you about events, but not through a weekly e-mail or daily Facebook messages anymore, instead it will be less scheduled and only when big(is) events are coming up. Lustre showcases beautiful pieces designed and made by the most recent graduates of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland\u2019s Centre of Excellence in Jewellery & Goldsmithing, work in gold, silver, platinum and gemstones. A highlight of the exhibition is an exquisite collection of ten Faberg\u00e9-style eggs.<\/a><\/p>\n

InFlux shows the results of two years of training in all aspects of ceramics skills and design at DCCoI\u2019s Centre of Excellence in Ceramics which is based in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. \u2018Flux\u2019 in ceramics describes a material that will cause silica, which has a natural melting point of 1700\u00b0C, to melt at a lower temperature thus forming ceramic glazes. In general terms, the word \u2018flux\u2019 also means continuous change and movement and can be applied to the development of ideas and designs and best describes the diversity of this work.<\/a><\/p>\n

It started as a modest brick house for the Phoenix Park Chief Ranger in 1751, was then turned into th \u2018occasional residence\u2019 for the Lords-Lieutenant and gradually evolved into a huge mansion. After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.<\/a><\/p>\n

Every Saturday a number of public tours take place and admission is free. Tickets will be issued at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day, on a first come, first served basis. Group and\/or advance booking is not possible.<\/a><\/p>\n

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Inti macy” and it will run from 19 October until 24 February. (You probably see that there is a space in the middle of the exhibition title. That is to trick any spam filter that doesn’t like too private or personal words. In the following text I will use “Personal Connection” as a replacement title.)<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?<\/a><\/p>\n

+ Hello Machine, a phone system for spontaneous conversations with strangers
+ Measure your Personal Space

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part\/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.<\/a><\/p>\n

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.<\/a><\/p>\n

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. It is now possible to obtain genomes from bones of people who lived thousands of years ago and using this technology, we have begun to decipher the genomes of ancient Ireland and find out about the migrations that shaped our people’s ancestry and what their genetic make up was.<\/a><\/p>\n

Grangegorman Military Cemetery is in Blackhorse Avenue just outside Phoenix Park. It is the largest military cemetery in Ireland. It was first opened in 1876 to serve as a graveyard for the soldiers of what was then Marlborough Barracks, now McKee Barracks, and their families. Specific zones were laid out for English, Canadian, New Zealand, and Australian service men. The cemetery\u2019s pedestrian gate is open from 10:00-16:00 seven days a week.<\/a><\/div>\n

Every Thursday the Little Museum of Dublin waives their admission charges for two guided tours thanks to sponsorship from Guinness. The first tour is at 18:00 and the second tour is at 19:00. Deranged opinions of legal profession in Ireland! – R ape case in Cork<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have complained many times over the last few years about nonsensical judgements by Irish judges that let criminals off with super low or with no penalties in cases where we, the public feel that serious misjustice has been done.<\/a><\/p>\n

So many judges in Ireland clearly can not be trusted with the law, which is a shocking realisation in itself. But we would hope that other part of the justice system are at least more trustworthy and show a better understanding of right and wrong.<\/a><\/p>\n

A trial at Cork Circuit Criminal Court, however, showed that the next level down, i.e. the people that are not (yet) judges are as deranged in their opinions as many judges.<\/a><\/p>\n

At that trial in Cork a 27 year old man was accused of rap ing a 17 year old girl in a laneway (Apologies for the misspelling of the word “rap ing” in this sentence and this whole article, but many spam checkers do react very tetchy to the use of certain words even in a serious discussion.)<\/a><\/p>\n

In her closing words, the senior counsel for the defence, Elizabeth O’Connell SC said:
“Does the evidence out-rule the possibility that she was attracted to the defendant and was open to meeting someone and being with someone? You have to look at the way she was dressed. She was wearing a thong with a lace front.” :-O<\/p>\n

The job of a defence lawyer is to achieve an acquittal of the accused and they do whatever it takes, even defending someone who is clearly guilty. We don’t know if the accused in this case was guilty or not. He claims that she consented, she says she didn’t. BUT he was acquitted in court by a jury of eight men and four women and it could well be that the outrageousness of “wearing a thong with lace front” contributed to that acquittal.<\/a><\/p>\n

First of all, how can the clothing that a woman is wearing justify a ra pe? That is totally ridiculous! Some men might not have much of a brain, others are happy to switch it off, but NO man should EVER be allowed to use the defence that he couldn’t stop himself after he saw a woman dressed in a certain way.<\/a><\/p>\n

Secondly, how does it matter what clothing is worn UNDERNEATH the normal (outer) clothing? Unless I run around showing everyone my under wear, it is MY decision what I wear underneath and NOBODY has the right to assume that I am inviting any sort of behaviour based on my choice of under garment!<\/a><\/p>\n

But it is the third thing that shocks me most! This stupid argument about the “thong with a lace front” justifying what might have been ra pe was not raised by an old, crusty, misogynistic, out-of-touch-with-life, male solicitor\/barrister. No, it was used by a middle aged FEMALE barrister and I can only assume that she never wore a “thong with a lace front” in her life! (Her picture is in this article<\/a>, but has been removed by the Law Library it seems where it was originally found.) If women think that another woman’s clothing choice justifies any sort of behaviour by a man, then what chance do young women that were attacked have in this country?<\/p>\n

Even more oddly, though, the FEMALE judge in the court did not stop that misguided defence strategy, but seemingly accepted the victim blaming based on her choice of clothing.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Irish legal system is in a bad state if the professionals in it have no better understanding of right and wrong!!<\/a><\/p>\n
