Surprise!! The Dublin Event Guide is arriving at a reasonable time with you. This week I gave up sleep on Wednesday night, Thursday night and Friday night to get this to you early because I am at a training course (another one!! :-O ) at the weekend. I love learning new things, so I regularly “expose” myself to new stuff and really enjoy it. Gerat for you, but I have to admit that sacrificing 3 nights makes it difficult to get maximum learnings from a training course (I keep falling asleep in the class room. :-O). Dublin Edition of Monopoly<\/h2>\n

There has been a Dublin Edition of Monopoly since the 70s, but a brand new edition has been revealed and there are some changes to the previous version. Originally Ailesbury Road in Dublin 4 (not Aylesbury in Tallaght!) was the top spot, this has changed and now the top place is the GPO. Ailesbury Road’s reputation as the most exclusive area has indeed gone down in recent years, but the GPO as the top spot is not necessarily a good replacement!<\/a><\/p>\n

And for some odd reason, Molly Malone is the cheapest place in Dublin according to the new Monopoly. This is also incorrect, Molly Malone is neither in a dodgy nor a cheap neighbourhood.<\/a><\/p>\n

It seems that the creators of the new Monopoly tried to pack as many Dublin locations onto the board irrespective of their fit! Monopoly always differentiated between expensive and cheap, but if all places that have a high recognition factor are in expensive areas, then some incorrect categorisation is bound to happen.<\/a><\/p>\n

Do mistakes like that dilute the Monopoly message? I think so! But imagine a really poor area of Dublin had been chosen for the lowest priced field? People in that area wouldn’t be too impressed!<\/a><\/p>\n

National Museum now open 7 days per week!<\/h2>\n

The National Museum has announced that from 22 October they will now also open on Mondays. The opening hours on Mondays are shorter than on other weekdays, but it is great that visitors will now be able to visit the four National Museum sites seven days a week. Lustre showcases beautiful pieces designed and made by the most recent graduates of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland\u2019s Centre of Excellence in Jewellery & Goldsmithing, work in gold, silver, platinum and gemstones. A highlight of the exhibition is an exquisite collection of ten Faberg\u00e9-style eggs.<\/a><\/p>\n

InFlux shows the results of two years of training in all aspects of ceramics skills and design at DCCoI\u2019s Centre of Excellence in Ceramics which is based in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. \u2018Flux\u2019 in ceramics describes a material that will cause silica, which has a natural melting point of 1700\u00b0C, to melt at a lower temperature thus forming ceramic glazes. In general terms, the word \u2018flux\u2019 also means continuous change and movement and can be applied to the development of ideas and designs and best describes the diversity of this work.<\/a><\/p>\n

After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.<\/a><\/p>\n

The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?<\/a><\/p>\n

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.<\/a><\/p>\n

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.<\/a><\/div>\n

The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?<\/a><\/p>\n

The musical and literary performance “Gallipoli, The GPO and Flanders” will happen on Sunday. <\/a><\/p>\n

Drawing on the personal letters and diaries of both his paternal and maternal granduncles and the diary of a British soldier, the composer Michael Holohan has created a moving portrait as he takes you on a music and literary journey, featuring the real life stories and eyewitness accounts of Francis and Thomas Holohan, Seosamh de Br\u00fan and Samuel Henry Lomas during the First World War 1914-18 and the Easter Rising in 1916.<\/a><\/p>\n

The performers will include actor Barry McGovern, the playwright and actor Donal O\u2019Kelly, the RTE Contempo String Quartet, John Walsh trumpet, Bernard Reilly percussion and Michael Holohan director and percussion.<\/a><\/p>\n

This is the story of four brave men who played a direct part in a number of very significant events in world history between the years 1914-1918.<\/a><\/p>\n

We once had this brilliant monthly event called “First Wednesday” or then “Free Wednesday”, when on the first Wednesday of the month all state owned Irish heritage sites waived all admission charges for the day. Unfortunately this super popular opportunity to bring culture closer to people in Ireland has been cancelled for nearly all Dublin sites and for other popular sites in other parts of Ireland, which was a very bad decision.<\/a><\/p>\n

There will have be a host of entertainment, from music and talks to guided tours of the exhibition, as well as tea and chats with BeLonGTo and their Ladybird group. The Abbey Theatre invites to a free preview of their newest performance “Asking for it”, a stage adaptation of Louise O’Neill’s novel, which shines a light on the experience of a young woman whiles life is changed forever by a horrific act of violence.<\/a><\/p>\n

The rules for the free preview are this: Tickets will be available on the night only from 18:30 on a first-come, first-served basis and can not be booked in advance. A limit of one ticket per person applies, so you have to have your friends with you in the queue. A queue will form well before 18:30. The performance starts at 19:30.<\/a><\/p>\n

Do we live behind the moon? We want Electric Scooters!<\/strong><\/p>\n

I mentioned last week that I was in San Diego recently and I totally appreciated the easy availability of the Uber service, something we are sorely missing in Ireland, just because the National Transport Authority is protecting the Taxi Cartel here for no good reason.<\/a><\/p>\n

And there is another great thing that San Diego (and many other cities on the USA) offer that falls under the headline of “transport” and that we are still missing in Ireland. San Diego has electric scooters everywhere that can be rented for short trips by anyone via a simple app. There are thousands of scooters everywhere and all you need is register with the service provider (Lime or Bird), download an app and then pay a $1 release charge per trip and 15 cent per minute of a rental charge.<\/a><\/p>\n

If you use the scooter for a long time, it can get expensive: A 1 hour usage will cost a total of $10. But at 15 miles per hour and with a reach of about 30 miles, you can could certainly cover quite a distance in that hour. In addition, the main target seems to be relatively short trips of closer to 10 minutes than an hour. And for that, using a scooter is a fun way to get from A to B. All this is hugely helped by the fact that you can park the scooter at any street corner (as long as it doesn’t obstruct), so it doesn’t have to be brought to a specific base (unlike the Dublin Bikes, for example).<\/a><\/p>\n

I zipped around a little and it was a lot of fun!<\/a><\/p>\n

In Dublin we lately see more and more people commuting on Electric Scooters (which they own), but unfortunately using a scooter in Ireland is still illegal and there are currently NO plans in the in the Department of Transport to look into “Personal Electric Mobility Vehicles” (PMV or PEM). We really do seem to live behind the moon!<\/a><\/p>\n

Electric mobility is looking like the BIG change to our transport system in the future and I mentioned recently that by 2020, the Irish Government would like to have 20,000 electric cars on Irish streets (but will probably fall way short of that). If electric vehicles is the future, then it is high time to start looking at other electric vehicles as well.<\/a><\/p>\n
